It’s no secret that the gateway or portal if you will to any home is the front door. Without a front door, our homes would get rather cold, and anyone could walk into our homes at random! The front doors of our homes come in all different styles, sizes and colours.

Over time, our front doors will become worn with the effects of constant use. What’s more; they will become draughty and offer little insulation for our abodes.

As you’re reading this, I will assume that you want to get a new front door for your home. But, can you replace it yourself? The answer is YES! Many keen DIYers have successfully learned how to hang a new front door to their properties. Here’s how you can do it too:

Tools

Before you begin, it’s important that you have the right tools for the job! After all; the last thing you want to do is have a problem part-way through the fitting process! Preparation is key, so here is what you need at your disposal:

  • Mitre saw;
  • Caulk gun;
  • Spirit level bars (two-foot and four-one)
  • A pry bar; and
  • A reciprocating saw.

Materials

As with any DIY job, you also need some materials to carry out the replacement of your front door:

  • Timber for the sill (not always needed, but handy to have just in case);
  • Roll of flexible self-adhesive flashing;
  • A couple of tubes of decorator’s caulk;
  • A couple of cans of expanding foam; and
  • Zinc-coated nails and screws in various sizes.

Taking out the old door

To begin, you will need to remove your existing door. There are a couple of ways to approach this step. If you wish to reuse the door frame, all you need to do is unscrew the door from the hinge.

But, if your frame is rotten and in need of replacement, you’ll also have to pry that off as well. This is where your pry bar will come in handy!

You will also need to remove the lock from the door. What if it won’t fit well into your new door? You might need to call a locksmith to sort that out for you. Otherwise, they can install a new lock on the replacement door.

Setting up the new frame

If you’re reusing your existing frame, you can skip this step. Otherwise, what you’ll need to do is the following:

  • Prepare the sill (bottom) of your frame. Use some timber, expanding foam and a spirit level to make sure the sill is flat against the ground;
  • Install some self-adhesive flashing to protect the frame from weather damage;
  • Offer up and then install the frame to the sides and top of the door area using screws and nails where necessary;
  • Use expanding foam and caulk to cover up any small gaps. For larger gaps, you may also need to install some architrave.

Hanging the new door

Last, but not least, you will need to hang your new door. Be sure to make any adjustments using your mitre saw. Well done; you’ve just fitted your first front door!

Are you planning on taking a holiday with your kids this year. Rather than going abroad or overseas, you might instead be considering going camping. If that’s the case you need some advice on how to make sure the trip doesn’t turn into the holiday from hell. It can be great fun to go camping with kids, and it offers the brilliant the chance to bond with them. But you have to be careful about how you book your trip and make sure you understand how stressful camping with children can be. Here is some advice that is guaranteed to help you plan your camping trip.

Get The Supplies You Need

This isn’t about making sure you have food packed in the car. Although, thinking about it you should certainly make sure your car has a few snacks if it’s a long ride to the destination. But it’s also about making sure you have things that will make the trip easier. For instance, there’s no guarantee that the weather’s going to be bright the whole time you are on vacation. To account for this, you need to get some things packed that kids can do on rainy days. Colouring books and board games are the classic rainy day activities for the camping trip. As well as this you should remember to book medical supplies. Kids do get sick on a holiday, it happens. That’s why you should make sure you’ve got paracetamol and anything else you might need in your supplies.

Trailer Or Tent?

This isn’t a hard question, you should always opt for the trailer. The reason for this is simple. While you might love spending time with your children, you don’t want them overcrowding you. Remember, this is your holiday too and you want to be able to relax. A trailer RV will give you and your children some space away from each other. This is also helpful on those rainy days we mentioned further up. Your kids will be able to sit at one end of the trailer while you’re preparing dinner in the other. There is also the difficulty of setting up a tent in wet weather that you want to avoid at all costs.

Destinations?

You might think that when you choose to go camping with your children you can head off to whatever location you like. However, you should make sure that there are activities where you are going for children. If you have young children they may not be satisfied with the idea of spending a day hiking up a mountain. Or, heading out in a row boat to go fishing. Some children find these types of activities strenuous at best and painful at worst. It’s best to ask them what they want to do rather than try and force them to try something you think they should in door. Even if you are going camping, that doesn’t mean you can’t stop off and visit a local theme park.

Take this advice and you’ll have fun with your kids, camping this year.

Make Sure Your Heating Is Working

It sounds like simple advice, and it is. But you’d be amazed how many people forget to check out their heating system in the run up to Christmas. Then they wonder why the radiators aren’t working properly. Or worse, why heating their home is costing them a fortune. It’s easy to arrange a quick check of your home boiler. It will give you peace of mind, and you’ll be able to guarantee your home is kept warm. If there is an issue, it’s still better to check because catching it early will make the repair cheaper. You can be guaranteed of that.

Another possibility is to get a backup heating system. For instance, you can buy a gas, portable heater. They are usually on wheels and can be moved around to whichever room you need them. The advantage of this is that you will still have heating in the event of a power cut. It can also give you a little more comfort for cold toes.

Upgrade Your Thermostat

If you have an old thermostat system, you might want to think about getting an upgrade. The latest digital thermostat you can buy is brilliant because it gives you complete control of your home. You can set the temperature to whatever you like with a quick click of a button. Some devices can even be connected digitally to your phone or another smart device. That means you won’t even need to get out of your chair to turn the temperature up in your home. This is the kind of tech you definitely want in your home.

Check Your Insulation

One of the biggest issues for your home in the winter is poor insulation. If your insulation is poor, your home is always going to be chilly, no matter how high you have the heating. The best way to avoid this issue to upgrade your home windows. You could either choose to upgrade to double or triple glazing. While costly, this is a great investment adding value to your home and giving you extra comfort. Alternately, you can just think about shutting doors when leaving rooms and buying thicker curtains.

Electric Blankets

Of course, you could just buy a few electric blankets for your home. When the snow starts to fall outside this could be the perfect accessory to have in each bedroom of your house. That way you will know your children will be warm and cosy when they’re tucked up in bed.

Road trips are an incredible way of seeing a country up close. Whether you’re heading to another state or driving through foreign lands, it gives you all a fantastic sense of freedom. It’s also an excellent way of spending some quality time together. However, long hours, boredom and uncomfortable seats can spoil the whole experience. To make sure you have a safe car that’s full of happy and excited family and friends, don’t forget to pack these essential items.

Pillows and Blankets

Your whole family will benefit from pillows and blankets from home. They can add a bit of additional comfort to long journeys and instantly create a more welcoming feel to your car. Car seats can be very uncomfortable to sit in for extended periods of time, so having these items will keep everyone more comfortable for longer. They will also be useful to have if the temperature drops suddenly. Also, research the best neck travel pillows and eye masks for each member of your family. Neck pillows can give some additional support making it easier to fall to asleep and the eye masks can block out unwanted light for street lamps. These will be vital items to have, especially if you are driving through the night to your destination. Lack of sleep a recipe for disaster especially with young children, so having all the essentials for a comfortable night’s sleep is a must.

Spare keys

Misplacing a set of car keys is easy. They call fall out of pockets or be in a bag that gets stolen. So make sure you take your spare car key with you on your road trip. Only taking one set of keys could bring your trip to an abrupt end and cause huge disappointment to your family. Always remember to keep them in a separate location to your first set and make sure you can access them quickly.

First aid kit

This should be something you have in your car already. But if you haven’t you need to get one as soon as possible, especially if you are travelling with your children. Make sure you have plenty of bandages, pain relief tablets and anti bacterial wipes. You never know when an accident might occur or a headache might develop. So it’s always better to have it than not. Also, remember to pack your family’s medication, especially if it needs to be taken multiple times during the day. Motion sickness medication may also be something you want to include in your first aid kit. If your children have never been on a road trip before they may not react to the constant motion too well.

Audiobooks

Instead of listening to your kids favourite CD or playlist for countless hours, buy an audio book for you all to listen to. There are hundreds available from Harry Potter to classic fairy tales which you can choose depending on your child’s ages. They will provide some much-needed entertainment that will keep your kids quiet for an hour or so.

These essential items will make your road trip more comfortable and enjoyable. So no matter where you are traveling to, make these items a priority.

Ways to Be Healthier & Pampered in Winter

During this winter season, a lot more people can get sick or feel run down. There are a lot more viruses going around and they spread easily in colder temperatures. It is important to take a little time out for oneself and take the time to be pampered. There are a lot of things that a person can do at home to take better care of their health over the winter season too. Here are just a few things to do:

Eat a Rainbow

Nutritionists say to eat as much brightly colored foods as possible. The more varied the colours of the foods, the better! Choose foods with lots of yellows, red, purples and greens. The more varied the colors, the larger range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants too. This is an important step in being healthier over the winter season.

Taking Care of Skin

During winter, skin can get dry and dehydrated. If someone isn’t feeling well, and their skin is dry and cracked, it will make them feel even more run down. One step is to keep their skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water. They should aim to have at least two litres of water per day. This helps to flush toxins out of the body too. So if plenty of water is drunk, the skin should be feeling hydrated and clear. Drinking a lot of water can even help to get rid of the dark circles that can gather under eyes.

There are other ways to care for skin in winter too. Having a massage would help relax the skin and muscles that can get so tense during the colder months. It also helps to increase blood circulation which will help to repair any sore muscles. A way to do this at home is to use a handheld back or foot massager. The type chosen would depend on where the muscular pain in. They work so well and would cost less than having a masseuse come to the home. Check out back or foot massager reviews to find the best type.

Have a Bubble Bath

A warm bubble bath seems to solve most problems. In winter, though, it is important to check that the bath isn’t too hot as it can dry skin out. Choosing scented bubble baths or using essential oils will help to relax and rejuvenate. Lavender is particularly relaxing for the body. Using candles in the bathroom will help to aid relaxation too. It might almost make it feel like a spa, making one forget they are at home.

Preparing Warm Drinks

A warm drink can help people to sleep and feel cosy. Hot chocolate or even herbal teas can be a treat and can help everyone’s mind to unwind. It is a good idea to prepare a warm drink as you are getting ready to go to bed. If it is done before going to bed, it can aid a good night’s sleep. Getting plenty of (quality) sleep is another way to be healthier during winter. When someone is energized, they can fight off any viruses more easily.

How To Look After Your Whole Family’s Teeth

Looking after your kids is hard enough. But you also need to take care of those twenty little teeth inside their mouths too. Multiply that by three or more kids and you’ve got a lot of teeth to take care of. Your teeth are also very important when it comes to your whole family. Neglect your teeth and you could quickly become too ill to take care of them well.

Starting with your kids teeth, it is a good idea to introduce them to toothbrushing as soon as the first little peg cuts. Gently brushing with a baby toothbrush (usually available from your health visitor), can help ease the pain of teething too. Many health practitioners recommend only a little cooled, boiled water to wet the brush at this age. There is baby formula toothpaste available from the age of one.

Toothpaste contains fluoride that we all need in small doses to protect our teeth. However, if your child swallows the toothpaste, this can lead to an overdose. This can then lead to rotting of the teeth and serious health problems. It’s important to teach your child how to spit out the toothpaste when you start to use it.

Supervised brushing is essential. The best way to tackle it is to let them have a go first. Many young kids end up just chewing the bristles. When you take over, you can see into their mouths clearly so you can make an excellent job of brushing. It might be a good idea to brush your own teeth at the same time to help demonstrate this important skill.

Any leading kid’s dentist will be able to advise on the best products and brushes to use for your child. Take your child to the dentist whenever you can, even for your own check up. This helps take away the fear that can be associated with the dentist’s office. From the age of three or four, the first signs of any decay may be apparent and will need to be treated.

To avoid decay, the whole family should avoid sugars. Beakers and sipping cups that are held against the teeth can cause teeth to rot rapidly. Open cup drinking of water is best. Choose a healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruit. However, be aware that fruits contain natural sugars that can also cause decay. Avoid fruit juice, or sucking fruits if possible.

Adults should floss at least once a day. Mouthwash can help prevent gum disease too. Brushing should be gentle but thorough to polish the surfaces of the teeth. Interdental brushing can help remove food trapped between the teeth. Everybody should visit the dentist at least twice a year for a thorough check up.

Whether we are fearful of the dentist ourselves or not, it’s best to approach the subject and the visits in a positive light for our kids. Their teeth are so important. They affect their smile, their happiness and their general health. If we can regularly demonstrate good oral hygiene, then our kids will pick up good habits for life.

Giving birth is an incredible thing, but it does take its toll on the mental and physical well-being of a mother. They can be left feeling ugly and having no self-confidence when they look in the mirror. The advice below is ideal for any new mothers that want to know how to feel beautiful after pregnancy.

Exercise Regularly

It’s no secret that women will put on some extra weight after pregnancy. This is totally natural and unavoidable. After all, most days were spent trying to relax and not being very active. Combine that with the fact that a pregnant woman has to eat for two people, and it’s no wonder some weight gets put on. While it’s hard to lose weight during pregnancy, there’s no excuse for not losing it after. The best solution is to exercise regularly. It doesn’t take long for someone to exercise every day. All that’s needed are fifteen to twenty spare minutes. By exercising on a daily basis, the baby weight will soon be gone.

Eat Healthily

In conjunction with exercising regularly, eating healthily is at the top of the list. Most pregnant women will not be on a healthy diet. This doesn’t mean they ate fast food every day for nine months, no, that’s not it. But, they probably ate quite a lot of junk food and snacks when they had pregnancy cravings. Again, this is normal and a natural part of pregnancy. But, if someone wants to feel beautiful after pregnancy, they have to eat healthily. Throw out all the snacks and stock the cupboards with good food. A healthy diet is a key to feeling better about the way you look.

Plastic Surgery Is An Option

Going through nine months of pregnancy can have it’s toll on the human body. A lot of women find that they don’t look the same as they did before it. Particularly if they’ve been through multiple pregnancies. The breasts are a body part that suffers the most. Women can get misshapen and ‘deflated’ breasts after pregnancy. This can be a real confidence booster and make one feel terrible about the way they look. So, it comes as no surprise that Belcara Health says many women get breast implants after pregnancy. Implants and breast augmentation can make a woman feel more comfortable in her body again. It restores things back to how they looked before the pregnancy.

Go For A Spa Day

After going through nine months of pain and stress, it’s easy for a woman to feel like she’s ugly. Obviously, this is not the case; it’s all in her head. Sometimes, a recovery day is needed. A day may not seem like much, especially after nine months of carrying a child. However, going for a spa day can work wonders. Someone that’s recently given birth will feel pampered and treated like a queen in a spa. It can make them feel relaxed, refreshed, and beautiful once more.

New mothers should give this advice a read if they want help getting back to normal after pregnancy. With just a few tips, they can feel beautiful and more confident.

Prepare Yourself for a New Standard of Living

Everyone would like to enjoy a good quality of life for themselves and their family. And sometimes that means taking steps to enjoy a new standard of living. Have a look at my suggestions, and use them to improve your quality of living!

Upsize

Preparing for a new standard of living is something of a process and one you need to get ready for. Perhaps the best way to enjoy a new standard of living is to upsize your home. This means selling up and moving to a place that is larger, nicer, and more expensive. It’s an exciting move, but it might cost you a lot so you need to be sure it’s the right move to make.

Try Out Luxury Living

If you want a higher standard of living long-term, you need to try it out. You need to check whether it suits your family’s need and your personalities. So, a good bet would be to try out luxury living and see how it suits you. Look at luxury apartments for rent and check out there they are. Then you can move in and start living in luxury for a while. This will give you a good experience of a higher standard of living and prepare you for transitioning into it.

Go Abroad

A lot of people decide that they can’t find the right sort of place they want to get the standard of living they require. And what often happens in this situation is that they decide to move abroad to live. And this is certainly an option you need to consider if you’re struggling to find somewhere. There are so many great places you can find a higher standard of living. But moving abroad is always a viable option as well.

Talk to the Family

If you want a new standard of living, you don’t necessarily have to move. You can achieve that where you are right now. But you’ll need to speak to the family about it and see how you get on. You see, in order to attain a new standard of living, you’re going to need to make some changes around the house, and with how you live. So you need to discuss this with the family before you start doing it.

Take That Promotion

If you’re on course for a promotion at work, it’s time you took the chance. A better quality of life is great, but you will need to sustain it. And this may well mean extra cost. That’s why you need to make sure you take any promotions you are offered. The increased pay packet will prove invaluable for you and the family. If you haven’t been offered any promotions, it’s time you started working towards one. Buck your ideas up at work and show you are keen and serious about progressing as an employee.

As a parent, it’s up to you to provide a better quality of living for the family and your kids. The thing is, these days everything seems very expensive, and as such it seems more difficult to achieve this. But that doesn’t have to be the case, and I hope by using the suggestions I’ve made you’ll be able to achieve this.
