Getting ready to handle the utter mayhem that is Christmas with our kids is something we look forward to and somewhat dread in equal measure. Will the parents be able to handle the over exuberance and the overeating, or will we just wish the festive season to be over as soon as it began? We know your pain!

Here are four tips to help parents with kids running around cope with the festive season and survive through to the other side.

1.      Plan Activities to Do

The school holidays are long. Depending on how old and independent your children have grown up to become, they may or may not get bored easily. Even the preteens often welcome parental supervision or going out on small trips for shopping, to play in the park, skate at an ice-skating rink, or some other local activity.

With teenagers, they’re probably better left to their own devices other than when you need help with larger tasks, such as picking out and decorating a Christmas tree and helping carry the shopping. Getting them involved in some way helps keep their Christmas spirits up.

For the younger kids, make a list of some activities and games they could play. Some they can be shown how to play and then left to play alone, while others will require ongoing supervision. You can also have a look online for some Christmas craft activities that are bound to keep them busy for hours.  Just make sure you have plenty of craft materials to hand.

2.      Declutter & Clean Thoroughly

While you may think that you keep your home pretty clutter-free and clean, you might want to take a second look. With family paying a visit and other neighbours and friends no doubt coming over at some point, there will be plenty of people noticing the little details. It’s inevitable that if you don’t pay attention to it now, when you suddenly hear that they’re coming, it will see you scuttling around last-minute trying to clean up and declutter in a jiffy. We all know that doesn’t work very well!

Before Christmas is fully upon us, with Santa Claus soon to come down the chimney, inspect each room and the hallways too. Look at your home like a person seeing it for the first time. Any furniture should be moved to clean up debris, dust and everything else that’s hiding under there. Give everywhere a once-a-year deep cleaning until it shines or has some of its original lustre back.

Once the place is cleaner, look at the furniture in each room. What is needed, and what could be temporarily removed into the garage or a spare bedroom for the time being to create more floor space for guests to move around and the kids to play?

3.      Do You Need New Furniture?

When you’ve looked at what you have in your home, it’s possible that you discover a need for more chairs, a longer dining table or extra storage in the guest bedroom. All year, you have probably been too busy to notice, but now it’s obvious.

When you want to know how to get your home ready for Christmas, Fishpools have some excellent ideas. They are furniture and décor specialists that have excellent furnishing and decorating ideas to add some sparkle and newness to your home at this festive time of year. They have some lovely throw blankets to warm up your sofa and soft cushions to create a luxurious but festive look.

4.      Kitchen Preparations

Change the layout of your kitchen tops to remove many of the scattered appliances that are barely used and won’t be missed. What you want is a larger preparation area to organize little nibbles and substantial meals around the Christmas period without feeling cramped. Add more shelving if you think that will help too.

Check that you have enough plates, bowls, cutlery, drinking glasses and wine glasses. Count up how many guests are expected and see if you’ll have enough. And if the dishwasher has been playing up, make an appointment to get it fixed before it’s really needed.

When you’re organized ahead of time, Christmas tends to be a lot smoother. It’s the disorganized parent(s) that have the most difficulty. They end up rushing down to the shops on several occasions to buy whatever they have forgotten because they neglected to make a thorough shopping list before the holidays became hectic.

You will also want to pay attention to the little things, like knowing how to reset a fuse if the fuse box gets tripped, or having bills paid automatically so nothing important gets forgotten during the busy period. It all helps towards making the festive season run as smoothly as possible.

Is It Already Time To Plan Your Christmas Cards?

You’ve just packed your flip-flops away and are still hanging onto your short skirts and tees for another few weeks. You don’t want to wave goodbye to the summer. Unfortunately, it’s over now. Does it mean you should be thinking about Christmas already? Technically, now is the best time to start planning your Christmas greetings. Indeed, things will begin to move very quickly towards the end of the year. Halloween is only a few weeks away. Then you need to plan for Thanksgiving, and finally, Christmas is just around the corner. In other words, the earlier you start taking some items off your to-do list, the easier it’ll be for you in the long term. Ultimately, the last trimester of the year is packed with celebrations and stress. While it might be a little early still to buy all the presents, now is the perfect time to get ready with the preps that can be started well ahead of the celebrations. In other words: Get your Christmas greeting cards ready now!

Photo credit- When should you send your snowy wishes?

Why start so early?

If you have a large family with five or more children, it’s fair to say that it takes a lot of work to get organized. Ultimately, it can be tricky to get everybody on the same picture – for your Christmas cards – especially when your kids have an agenda packed with activities. Between kids who train regularly with sports clubs, or kids who are attending college, you might need to set a date for your family photography well in advance! Admittedly, it’s fair to say that families with young children don’t need to start very early. If you have a baby or a toddler, it’s best to take the picture as late as possible as your child will change a lot in a short time. However, you can have a go at making a list of all the people you want to send the cards to; this will ensure you can check prices.

Choose your props together

Christmas cards are the fun time of the year where you can be creative. There are plenty of exciting card themes that you can do with kids – Silent night where you silence the kids is a classic for families with young children, for instance. You can also have a playful mug shot of the family, promising Santa that you can explain the misbehavior of the year. For older kids, you might want to pick a more general Christmas feel with women’s Christmas sweaters and hats for everyone. Ultimately, you’ll need to find your props ahead of the photo shooting.

When’s the right time to send your cards?

When should you ideally send your cards? You need to consider that most Christmas cards are sent just after Thanksgiving. Some families follow the advent calendar, and consequently, your card should arrive between four and three weeks before Christmas. If you add a couple of weeks for the production and the addition of a handwritten note on each card, you should be ready to order your cards by early November at the latest!

Jingle bells, jingle bells, get all your photos! Don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s too early to plan Christmas. Starting now gives you just enough time to pick a theme and all the props you need to make your greeting cards work.

When Easter arrives, you need to be ready with the gifts. These aren’t just gifts for the young ones in your life. Who doesn’t appreciate getting a nice Easter basket from their loved ones? Is There a Reason to Learn to Shop Smart Instead of Hard?

Is there a reason why it’s better to shop on the web than in the physical world? Nine times out of ten, the answer is in the affirmative. Fin Fun Mermaidens Collection Mermaid Tails

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Disclosure- I received a mermaid tail and monofin in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
20161209_163131Have you ever dreamed of being a mermaid? I’m pretty sure most girls have thought about what it would be like to be a mermaid and have a long, beautiful tail. Well now thanks to Fin Fun tails, girls and even women fulfill their mermaiden dreams. The holidays are coming and if you have mermaid lovers on your gift list, I have the perfect idea for you. The Fin Fun Mermaidens collection features tails based on the beloved Mermaiden Princess characters, each with a unique personality and story, which can be found on the kid-friendly FinFriends.com site.

20161209_163224My older daughter turned 13 last week and as long as I can remember, probably since the first time she saw The Little Mermaid, she has dreamed of what it would be like to be a mermaid. Of course she knows that she’ll never turn into a real mermaid but with the Fin Fun tails, she can get pretty close! We were sent the beautiful pink, purple, and blue Fin Fun tail that my daughter picked out and she was so excited to try it out. 20161209_165614There are many different colors and styles to choose from including one that looks like a peacock and one that looks like a butterfly! It’s hard to choose a favorite!
sapphire-peacock-mermaid-tail_main-10 passion-pink-mermaid-tail_main-10
majestic-monarch-mermaid-tail_main-10
There are lots of sizes available on the website so make sure to measure the wearer and choose the right size. I’m not sure why when I first heard of these mermaid tails I thought it would be rubbery (maybe I’ve watched too many mermaid movies LOL) but I was wrong. The tail is made of a high-quality, soft polyester/spandex blend fabric which is very comfortable according to my daughter. We were also sent tail protectors which are thick, clear stickers that go on the ends of the tail to keep them from getting scratched up on the pool surface. I suggest getting them to protect your new tail. It is form fitting like a mermaid tail should be but it was easy to slide up over her legs and hips because the bottom of the tail is open for that purpose. Wearers can walk safely on land by pulling the fin up over their legs and having their feet stick out of the bottom.
20161209_165537To make the mermaid experience even better and more realistic I suggest also getting the patented Fin Fun Monofin (available for separate purchase). It provides natural mermaid motion for smooth swimming at the pool, lake or beach. It really makes the mermaid tail feel and act more realistic. You can see in the picture below how it really gives the mermaid tail shape compared to picture of my daughter holding up the tail above. In the Monofin feet are not strapped in, making removal of the Monofin easy, with just one tug and a kick. The open tail bottom makes it easy to insert and remove the Monofin (required for swimming), while also avoiding trapped air and allowing mermaids to walk on land. Now all my daughter needs is swim goggles and she’s ready to hit the pool!

Note- the Monofin is only for experienced swimmers who can swim well with feet positioned together and who can butterfly kick with ease. It doesn’t come in toddler sizes for this reason.
20161209_1646170In the picture above you can see how the bottom of the tail is open so you can easily slip the Monofin in for swimming and out for walking. For safety make sure to put the Monofin into the mermaid tail at the edge of the water because it is not recommended to walk with the Monofin on. In our hurry to take pictures for the post my daughter put the tail and Monofin on while sitting on a lounge chair. Then we wanted to take some pictures by the side of the pool and realized we had to take the monofin off so she could walk over to the side of the pool. Just keep that in mind and put the Monfin on where you are going to be getting into the pool.
20161209_164921We live in South Florida where it is hot most of the year but of course as luck would have it it had been “cold” here for the last week so unfortunately my daughter wasn’t able to try her mermaid tail out in the water yet. We’re hoping she’ll be able to actually swim with it the next time the weather gets warm again and I’ll update the post. Poor child was freezing in these pictures since it was in the upper 60’s (which is pretty cold for a Florida girl wearing a bathing suit), overcast, and about to rain but she did her best to make it look warm and sunny don’t you think? Ah the life of a blogger’s child!

The Definitive Guide To Hosting The Perfect Family Party

With the holiday season fast approaching, many people will be thinking about planning a party. Family parties are very popular at this time of the year, but what makes the perfect one? This guide will provide three amazing tips to help anyone plan the perfect family party this holiday season!

Get The Party Essentials

There are many things that make a great party. These are things that every party must have, regardless of who’s throwing it! For the perfect family party, make sure there are plenty of decorations and refreshments. Luckily, as it’s nearing Christmas, there may already be lots of decorations around the house. If it’s a Christmas family party, half of the work is done already! For a New Year’s party, consider putting up a few more relevant decorations. Little things that say ‘2016’ or stuff with ‘Happy New Year’ written on it will make the perfect addition to a New Year’s Eve party. Then, the focus is shifted to the food and drink. All great parties need great refreshment. Don’t cook up a three-course meal for every guest, instead, focus on party food. Click here http://www.realsimple.com/ to see some simple recipes for awesome party foods! Have a table laid out with all the food and snacks for guests to enjoy whenever they want. Of course, make sure the house is stocked full of booze and other beverages too!

Decide On The Dress Code

All parties are going to have a dress code that guests will follow. For a family party, it offers the opportunity for a little creativity. Naturally, with Christmas around the corner, a good idea would be to follow a Christmas theme. Have guests arrive in their best Christmas jumpers or dressed up as iconic Christmas characters. Or, go down a different route and have a bit more fun. These days, cosplay is a very popular choice amongst party planners. It allows guests to create their outfits and dress up like famous TV and movie characters. It’s like fancy dress, with a bit more creativity. Cosplay outfits are really easy to create, all that’s needed are different fabrics and materials to put together. For more information on creating a cosplay outfit, go to www.cosplayfabrics.com. There are, of course, many other dress codes you could set for a family party. Perhaps consider making guests turn up in formal evening wear? But, seeing as it’s the holiday season, it makes more sense to have a bit of fun with the dress code!

Think About Entertainment

The final thing to think about is the entertainment for the party. How will all the guests have fun? Of course, a big part of family parties is catching up with relatives and creating family memories. But, they also present the perfect chance to play some party games. Things like charades or Pictionary are ideal for a family get together. Part of the holiday season is getting the family together and playing these party games! It will be amazingly fun and ensure the party is a big hit!

Christmas Decoration Essentials And How To Pick Them

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Christmas is a special time of year that everyone loves, and why wouldn’t they? It is a time when they can celebrate with their family and spend quality time with one another. Plus, there is always plenty of beer and good food!

Making Christmas special is reliant on the atmosphere. When people get the atmosphere of their homes wrong, it never feels the same, and it can take the edge of the festive period. It is all down to the decorations. There are certain decorations that every home needs for the perfect effect, but there also a few things that the homeowner must keep in mind, too.

#1: The Tree

The Christmas tree is the most important decoration in the arsenal. Without a tree, Christmas would not be the same. The key to a great Christmas tree is two-fold. Firstly, the tree should be real. Fake trees don’t have the same smell that adds to the experience. Plus, they look tacky. Secondly, the decorations should be simple bordering on basic. The more that goes on the tree, the less glamorous it looks. The saying that less is more is very true when it comes to Christmas trees.

#2: Wreaths

Wreaths are firm favorite among homeowners. They look the part because of their evergreen leaves that hold an amazingly deep green color. And, they can go all around the house without looking like the decorator is trying too hard. All in all, they are essential. To get the right effect, the buyer needs to look for fresh Christmas wreaths. A good tip to remember is the fresher the wreath, the deeper the color.

#3: Ornaments

The snow globe or the Christmas carousel are two incredibly Christmassy ornaments that look amazing on the mantelpiece or sat in the window. It is the contrast of the darkness outside and the gleam of the lights that make them popular. It is as if they are a beacon of light in an otherwise dark house. The key to ornaments is personality. There is no secret formula to buying Christmas ornaments because it is down to the person. Ornaments vary in shape and size, so the style and tone vary from piece to piece. Whatever the buyer feels look nice is the perfect ornament for the house this Christmas. Of course, it needs have a festive element!

5213071451_36cd84d194_zpicture via Cliff on flickr

#4: Lights

Lights add to the contrast of the gloom outside and the light inside, a lot like ornaments. In fact, both work very well in tandem. For Christmas, fairy lights are the best choice. They are lightweight, and they don’t pulsate light that blinds the eyes. That means the designer can put them anywhere around the house, and they will look amazing. The stairs, the tree, and the fireplace are three good spots for fairly lights at Christmas.

#5: Advent Calendar

Advent calendars signal that Christmas is imminent. They act as a clock as the person counts down the days by crossing off the date and eating the treat inside. There is no better way to build anticipation than an advent calendar. Any advent calendar will do, to be honest, but a homemade one is a nice alternative.

My Preparation Tips for an Amazing Christmas

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

I love Christmas time; it’s maybe my favorite time of year. I love the weather, and I love the togetherness too. To make sure I always have an amazing Christmas experience I make sure to prepare myself properly. In my house, these are the tips and techniques we like to use to give ourselves a memorable Christmas.

Get a Fake Tree

One of the biggest factors debates at Christmas time is whether to get a real tree or an artificial one. Now, there are advantages and disadvantages to both, of course. But I always tend to favour an artificial one. They are much more practical and efficient. We use a fake tree, and we have had the same one for years. It saves us an additional expense each year, and it means I don’t have to worry about cleaning up pine needles all the time!

Light Up the Place

What is Christmas without a bit of decoration? You need to embrace the festive season and decorate your home as much as you can. And a great way to do this is to hang Christmas lights. Battery powered Christmas lights are excellent for the tree, or for the walls of any room. If you want to get the best possible effect, you should look at using different coloured lights. Have a think about the different places you can hang your lights, and the impact they will have.

Plan the Food

You need to focus on what you’re going to be eating at Christmas time. This is often a great opportunity for people to indulge themselves. In my house, we like to choose the joint of meat we have carefully. We’re very particular about Christmas dinner. I would suggest that you make a list of all the food you want to get over the festive period. Perhaps even plan out the meals as well. This gives you much better preparation and makes for a calm Christmas in the kitchen.

Do Secret Santa

We all know that the biggest expense at Christmas is buying presents. It takes up time and money, and it’s very stressful. It’s difficult to know when to start buying, and what gifts to get. And that’s why I came up with the Secret Santa idea in my household. This means that everybody gives and receives one present, up to a certain value of course. Secret Santa is an excellent way to reduce the cost and chaos involved in present buying. So I’d recommend you use this for Christmas this year.

Get into the Festive Spirit

I’ve found that the best way to enjoy Christmas is to get into the festive spirit. Embrace the period fully, and you’ll get more out of it. This means sending Christmas cards, listening to Christmas songs, and drinking mulled wine. If you can get into the festive spirit, you’re going to be much more organised and prepared for a fantastic Christmas.

Christmas_bauble_black_and_whiteImage Source

If you want to have the best possible Christmas, I would suggest following my tips. It’s a wonderful time, and should be full of joy and happiness. With a bit of preparation, you should be able to craft the perfect Christmas experience for the whole family.

My Family’s Holiday Gift Giving Traditions

Disclosure- This sponsored post was written by me on behalf of Sverve and Walmart but all opinions are my own.

Opening Chanukah present6

This is a throwback picture of my daughter opening some of her first Chanukah presents- BOOKS!  Both of my girls have always loved books.  My daughter will be 11 years old tomorrow.  Where does the time go?

We celebrate Chanukah in our family.  When my girls were younger we would get them 8 presents (which were usually toys) for Chanukah, one for each night.  Now that they are older we don’t get them 8 big toy gifts any more.  They both have December birthdays so that is when they usually get a bigger gift from us.  For Chanukah we get them smaller gifts each night.  I started a tradition a few years ago of having a theme for each night’s presents and I am going to do that again this year.

The tentative themes for the 8 nights of Chanukah this year will be:

1st Night- Toys

My girls love Barbies and other dolls, figures, etc. so they will probably each get one special doll.  I haven’t totally figured this one out.

2nd Night- Art Supplies

Walmart has a great selection of arts and craft supplies so I will either buy them each a kit to make something or I’ll buy a bunch of art supplies for them to come up with projects on their own.

3rd Night- Movies (DVDs/Blu-rays)

I score some great DVD deals at Walmart on Black Friday.

4th Night- Clothes

I got them really cute pajamas with their favorite characters on them at Walmart on Black Friday plus I will be getting them some other cute outfits.  They love dresses so they will each probably get a new dress, too.

5th Night- Books

My girls are both bookworms, thankfully, so they LOVE getting books.  There are a few books that I knew they are both hoping for so they’ll be getting those.

6th Night- Games

This year I want to have more family game nights in our house so I am going to get them some games that we don’t have.

7th Night- Building Toys

I’ll be check out the K’NEX® Amusement Parks at Walmart’s Toyland event on Friday.  My girls love Disney World so I think my girls would like to build their own amusement park ride with K’NEX® .

8th Night- Jewelry

I bought them each a special necklace that says “You are my Sunshine, My only Sunshine” because I always sing that to them.
You Are My Sunshine Necklace

Growing up my mother used to give my sister and me our main gifts but the first night of Chanukah we always received a gift bag filled with small goodies like nail polish, stickers, lip gloss, and other small things my mother knew we would like.  It was her version of giving us stocking stuffers.  Now I do the same for my girls.  It is one tradition that I have always loved.  I hope my girls do the same when they have children.

What are your family’s holiday gift giving traditions?

chosen by kidsDo you have toys on your holiday shopping list?  Select Walmart stores around the country are having special Toyland events during the month of December.  Find a Walmart’s Holiday Toyland event near you where you can interact with this year’s hottest toys #ChosenByKids.  While you are there you can also utilize Walmart’s Free Layaway and Walmart’s Credit Card on your purchases this holiday season.  Make sure to follow #ChosenByKids on Twitter to follow along.  You can also check out Walmart’s list of 20 top toys #ChosenByKids for 2014.

Are your girls ready for an underwater adventure? That’s exactly what you will get with this Moxie Girlz Avery Magic Swim Mermaid! This glittery, colorful doll swims on her own when placed in water, perfectly capturing the magic of mermaids. Who says mermaids aren’t real? This doll was exactly what we needed to make bath time a little more exciting for my girls.

Moxie Girlz MermaidAvery is equipped with sensors that enable her to detect when she’s in water. Upon being submerged, she begins waving her tail back and forth and is propelled forward. How cool is that?!  Plus her tail changes colors when it gets put into warm water or you hold it and the heat from your hand warms it.  My girls love watching her tail change colors.

  • Delights and dazzles with graceful swimming
  • Flowing hair and colorful tail capture attention
  • Automatically senses water and begins swimming motion
  • Moveable head, arms, and tail allow for numerous poses

I think your kids will love this Moxie Girlz Avery Magic Swim Mermaid as much as mine do!

All of these dolls feature fun and innovative lanyard hair and come with their favorite pet. So cute! Deluxe dolls also include fun PJs for sleepover play and color-changing hair. My girls are obsessed!  My girls are getting older but they still love to play with dolls so these Lalaloopsy Girls Dolls are perfect for them.  I have to admit I love them, too.  Their hair is made of lanyard material (like the bracelets I used to make as a child) so you don’t have to worry about their hair getting messed up.

Features:

  • Each Lalaloopsy Girls character has a unique personality based on what she was made from
  • Features fun lanyard hair for immersive hair play
  • Includes comb
  • Includes adorable pet
  • Totally collectible!

Lalaloopsy Girls DollI love that these super cute dolls are so flexible and easy to adjust into different positions. They are great for imaginative play. Also when Mommy needs some quiet time.  We look forward to adding more of the Lalaloopsy Girls Dolls to our collection.

I love all of the cute little details the house has. They look great and they are hard plastic so they hold up well. The play set comes with one mini doll and her pet mouse, as well as a few accessories including a stove, teapot, cup, and cake.
