Also, check out the interview below with the hair genius behind Elsa’s lovely locks! Celebrity hairstylist Danilo discusses what it’s like being part of the Disney family, how he came to be involved with the film, how to recreate Elsa’s do and much more!

AN INTERVIEW WITH CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST DANILO (HAIR CONSULTANT FOR ELSA’S HAIR) FOR THE BLU-RAY AND DVD RELEASE OF FROZEN

Frozen is an epic tale of adventure and comedy from Walt Disney Animation Studios. In the film, fearless optimist Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey to find her sister Elsa (Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna teams up with a rugged mountain man named Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) to battle the elements in a frantic race to save the kingdom.

With Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Blu-ray and DVD of Frozen about to be released, we had the chance to chat with Danilo – hair designer and consultant for Elsa’s hair– to discuss what went into the creation of her beautiful snowy hair (made of 400,000 computer-generated threads).

How did you become involved in being a hair consultant for Elsa’s hair in Disney’s Frozen

I was contacted by the Frozen filmmakers to see if I’d be interested in the project. They wanted to collaborate with a hairdresser to explore creating the hair as it truly is and how it responds.

What was your preparation process like?

Preparing for Frozen is like preparing for any movie, in the sense that you first need to study the character and analyze her truths; her daily habits, her lifestyle and what nuances pervade her overall look and style. For instance, Elsa is a princess born with a special power and her character changes as the story progresses – when she is in an overwhelmed state of mind and her powers are concealed she has one look, and then she transfigures into a whole new look once she lets her powers be known.

What was your first day like?

Upon arrival at Disney, I was sequestered in an incredible studio set up especially for Frozen and its characters. The room had blown-up images of my work on the wall, including ones of a particular client of mine who also happens to have beautiful platinum hair. It really is no surprise that they had gone to that level of detail.  After all, it is Disney! My assistants and I set up our tripod, mannequin heads and our platinum wigs all in a row, and began the construction of 3 to 4 styles inspired by Elsa’s character at different stages in the movie.

Disney prepared everything for us, turned on the music and left us while cameras documented the work we were doing. They then returned after two or three hours with the director, producer, and all those involved artistically at this development stage.

Which filmmakers did you work with throughout the process?

I was delighted that the individuals who were artistically involved at this stage included the two animators responsible for the hair in Tangled.

After constructing and developing hairstyles for viewing purposes, I was introduced to a live model so I could showcase the hair designs to the Disney entourage.

It was at this point that the directors, producer, animators, and costume-designers arrived. The designers who transform onscreen animated figures into costumed characters for the Disney parks were there as well.

How does a live model help the creation process?

Using a live model is extremely helpful for demonstrating the character’s transitions through her hairstyles. With the model I was able to show real hair blowing in the wind and to show how to fold it into a chignon (twisted bun) — all of which are stages and features of Elsa’s particular hairstyle. This was all documented by handheld cameras, with me explaining Elsa’s hair and hairstyles, and describing her evolution in the story.

How would you describe Elsa’s hairstyle?

Elsa’s hairstyle consisted of a tousled pompadour (hair swept upwards from the face and worn high over the forehead) flowing back into a thick mane of asymmetrically braided hair. I likened the pompadour to the silhouette of a crown.

She transforms from Princess to Queen with her side braided chignon, and the bouffant height of her pompadour is an outward example of her confident and powerfully regal status, ready to lead as queen, hopefully happily ever after.

What is it like being a part of the Disney family now?

It was a highlight of my career to be asked by Disney to work on a project with such talented and creative people. Having the chance to collaborate with this level of professionals is an incredible privilege.

To complete my work, and then return for the premiere of the movie and see the magic that the team achieved with Elsa’s character was breathtaking, humbling, and gratifying.

Have you given any celebrities a Frozen- inspired look since working on the film?

I most certainly have tried versions of this on clients, especially for red carpet appearances, or just a special night out.

What are some tips on how fans can get Elsa’s look for their own hair in real life?

There’s a multitude of ways to create Elsa’s hair for your own pleasure. If you are fortunate enough to have that amount of hair to create the style, great; otherwise an added ponytail could achieve a very similar effect.  Also, it is always a good idea to bring a picture of Elsa with you to your hairdresser and ask them to reproduce it for you.

And if achieving a more exact version of Elsa’s hairstyle (the voluminous pompadour and side ponytail which can be braided and left down or pinned up into a chignon) is really important to someone, I would recommend purchasing a long platinum wig and having it cut and styled in just the right way. This would be a sure-fire way of duplicating that special look.

Disclaimer- I received free admission to the movie mentioned below to conduct my review but I all opinions are 100% my own.  I received no other compensation.

I have been waiting for Disney’s Frozen to come out for a long time.  I saw the initial character sketches and story boards when I went to L.A. last year with Disney and then I saw a sneak peek of some of the scenes when I went on my most recent Disney trip so I knew just how amazing the whole movie was going to be.

Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind “Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” presents “Frozen,” a stunning big-screen comedy adventure.  In Frozen, fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel- LOVE HER!).  Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven.  Elsa’s icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter and Anna hopes she will be able to get Elsa to reverse this eternal winter.  Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

My whole family LOVED everything about Frozen from the beautiful imagery to the amazing songs.  We already purchased the soundtrack and have been listening to it non-stop.  Of course our favorite song is “Let It Go” sung my Idina Menzel who has the voice of an angel.  As 2 sisters themselves I think my girls were really able to relate to sisters Anna and Elsa.  They loved the pretty dresses and of course the beautiful ice castle.  There was enough humor in Frozen for my husband to enjoy it, too!  Frozen is a great movie for the whole family.
When you go to see Frozen make sure to get there on time as the movie short that comes on before Frozen, Get a Horse, is AMAZING!  I don’t want to give anything away but it is one of the best things I have ever seen on the big screen.  DON’T MISS IT!!!

Disney’s 53rd feature film, Frozen, is coming to theaters November 27th and I was lucky to be a part of the 1st group to see a preview of it.  It was directed by Jennifer Lee, the first female director of a Walt Disney Animation Studios theatrical feature, who co-wrote Disney’s Wreck It Ralph.  There were over 400 people who worked on the film based on The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson.  There was a lot of research that went into the making of Frozen including a trip to Wyoming to research snow.  Even men wore dresses to see what it was like to walk in a dress in the snow.  They went to an ice castle in Canada to observe how colorful, reflective, and refractive ice is and the look of Frozen was inspired by the buildings in Norway.  The power, beauty, and danger of ice they observed is reflected throughout the movie.

Frozen is the story of two princess sisters, Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Irina Menzel).  Elsa, the older sister was born with the magical power to make ice and snow.  When Elsa hurts Anna accidentally as a child, trolls heel her but make Anna forget about the powers.  Elsa tries to keep her powers hidden by wearing gloves and keeping emotionally distant.  Anna wants to connect with Elsa but she won’t so Anna pressures her sister which causes her to loose control of her emotions.  Her emotions end up creating an eternal winter in the kingdom and she retreats to live alone in a castle high above the mountain line.

We then meet a fun cast of characters including a reindeer, a mountain man, and a lovable snowman.  Want to know what happens next?  Check out Frozen in theaters this November.  I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am for this movie.  I remember first seeing story boards for it last year so to see it finally come to the big screen is exciting.  The preview I saw was amazing.  It gave me chills.
frozen5212ae076bd0a
And if that isn’t reason enough to go see it, the movie short that is being shown before Frozen is!  Get A Horse, directed by Lauren MacMullan is one of the best pieces of film I have ever seen.  It took a year and a half to make and an AMAZING thing about it is that the voice in the short is actually the voice of Walt Disney.  How cool is that?!?!  I won’t tell you more about Get A Horse because I don’t want to give anything away but be prepared to be surprised.  It really is incredible.

Screenwriter/Director Lee Joins Director Chris Buck at the Helm of Walt Disney Animation Studio’s 53rd Full-Length Animated Feature- FROZEN

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

I am so excited for Disney’s upcoming new movie, Frozen.  I saw the beginning work on it when I was in Los Angeles a few months ago.  It was so exciting to see the beginning of the brainstorming process.  It looks like it’s going to be a beautifully done movie.  I can’t wait to see the final product.

BURBANK, Calif. (November 29, 2012)
— Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS) taps Jennifer Lee to join Chris Buck at the helm of its 53rd full-length animated feature “Frozen,” which is slated for the big screen on Nov. 27, 2013. Lee, who has contributed to the film’s screenplay, is one of the screenplay writers of this year’s hit arcade-hopping adventure “Wreck-It Ralph.”

Featuring the voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, “Frozen” is the coolest comedy-adventure ever to hit the big screen. When a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna’s sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell. Encountering mystical trolls, a funny snowman named Olaf, Everest-like extremes and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.

“Frozen” producer Peter Del Vecho says the match-up is perfect. “Jenn has a real connection to the film and creates dynamic and relatable characters. Her sense of comedy, adventure and story structure paired with Chris Buck’s vast experience and incredible instincts create an ideal situation for this film.”

Lee’s screen adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights” is being produced by Troika Pictures. She has an original screenplay in development with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, and her original script “Lucid Dreams” was optioned by Wolfgang Peterson’s Radiant Productions. Lee holds an MFA in Film from Columbia University and a BA in English from the University of New Hampshire.

Buck directed (with Kevin Lima) Disney’s 1999 high-swinging feature “Tarzan,” which won an Oscar® and a Golden Globe® for Best Music/Original Song (Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart”). He directed (with Ash Brannon) 2007’s Oscar-nominated “Surf’s Up” for Sony Pictures Animation. His credits within animation also include 1989’s “The Little Mermaid,” “The Rescuers Down Under” (1990) and “Pocahontas” (1995).

With original songs by Tony®-award winner Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon,” “Avenue Q”) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“In Transit”), “Frozen” journeys into theaters Nov. 27, 2013, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.
