It’s finally here! These are always my favorite posts of the year. The 2019 Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Slate is here and it looks SOOOO good!!! There are several live action adaptations of childhood favorites (Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King), two Marvel Studios movies (Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame), Disneynature (Penguins), several sequels (Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, and Star Wars Episode IX) and more! It looks like 2019 is going to be a great year for family movies.

Which one are you most excited about? If I had to pick I would say Avengers: Endgame because I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happens next. I watched Avengers: Infinity War again this weekend and of course cried at the end so I can’t wait for the sequel. I am also excited for Aladdin as the animated version was always one of my favorites. Of course Toy Story 4 and The Lion King are on my list, too. And Captain Marvel because I’m excited to see a Marvel movie with a female lead.

Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Some girls love The Little Mermaid, some love Beauty and the Beast. Of all the Disney princesses, I’ve always loved Mulan. There is something about her bravery and fortitude that always appealed to me. I can’t wait to see how Disney makes one of my favorite movies into a live-action version.

BURBANK, Calif. (August 13, 2018)—Production on Disney’s “Mulan,” a live-action adaptation of the studio’s 1998 animated feature, has begun. The film will shoot on locations in New Zealand and China and will open in U.S. theaters on March 27, 2020.

Liu Yifei (“The Forbidden Kingdom,” “Once Upon a Time”) was cast as Hua Mulan following a year-long global casting search. Joining her in the film are: Donnie Yen (“Star Wars: Rogue One”); Jason Scott Lee (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny”); Yoson An (“The Meg”); Utkarsh Ambudkar (“Pitch Perfect”); Ron Yuan (“Marco Polo”); Tzi Ma (“Arrival”); Rosalind Chao (“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”); Cheng Pei-Pei (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”); Nelson Lee;  Chum Ehelepola; with Gong Li (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Raise the Red Lantern”) and Jet Li (“Shaolin Temple,” “Lethal Weapon 4”).

“Mulan” is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.

“Mulan” is directed by Niki Caro (“Whale Rider,” “McFarland USA”) from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (“Jurassic World,” “In the Heart of the Sea”) and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.” The producers are Jason T. Reed (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”), Chris Bender (“A History of Violence”) and Jake Weiner (“Criminal”) with Barrie M. Osborne (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King“), Bill Kong (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Monster Hunt”) and Tim Coddington (“Crazy Rich Asians”) serving as executive producers.

Disney’s animated feature, which was released in 1998, starred Ming-Na Wen, Miguel Ferrer and Eddie Murphy and was nominated for an Oscar® and two Golden Globe® Awards.

The story of the legendary warrior is one of China’s most popular folktales, and is still a part of the curriculum in Chinese schools today.

December 25, 2018 – MARY POPPINS RETURNS (Walt Disney Studios)

#MaryPoppinsReturns

Image converted using ifftoany

In Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” an all new sequel with a fresh sensibility that celebrates the spirit of the original, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Emily Blunt (“The Girl on the Train,” “Into the Woods”) stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”) plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London. “Mary Poppins Returns” is directed by Rob Marshall (“Into the Woods,” “Chicago”). The screenplay is by David Magee (“Life of Pi”) and the screen story is by Magee & Marshall & John DeLuca (“Into the Woods”) based upon The Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The producers are Marshall, DeLuca and Marc Platt (“La La Land”) with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer and the music is by Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray”) with songs by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“Hairspray”). The film also stars Ben Whishaw (“Spectre”) as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer (“Hugo”) as Jane Banks; Julie Walters (“Harry Potter” films) as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; with Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”) as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy and introduces three new Banks’ children played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.

PL Travers first introduced the world to the no-nonsense nanny in her 1934 children’s book “Mary Poppins.” However, the subsequent adventures of Mary Poppins remained only on the pages of the seven other PL Travers’ books…until now. “Mary Poppins Returns” is drawn from the wealth of material in these additional books. The film takes place in 1930s Depression-era London 24 years after the original film was set. Michael Banks works for the same financial institution that employed his father and still lives at 17 Cherry Tree Lane with his three children, Annabel, John and Georgie and their housekeeper Ellen. Carrying on in her mother’s tradition, Jane Banks campaigns for workers’ rights and provides a helping hand to Michael’s family. When the family suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins magically re-enters their lives and with Jack’s help, brings joy and wonder back into their home.

“Mary Poppins Returns” will be released in U.S. theaters on December 25, 2018.

As you can probably tell from my picture I was so excited to find out that the Disney classic, Bambi, which just celebrated it’s 75th anniversary, was just added to the Walt Disney Signature Collection on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on May 23rd and on Bluray, DVD, and On-Demand on June 6th. The collection release includes a variety of new bonus material including recording of Walt Disney discussing the challenges and triumphs during the production of Bambi, deleted scenes and characters, stories and effects that Bambi had on the Studio, and much more. The Digital HD release includes an exclusive, heartfelt feature on the incredible artist, Tyrus Wong, who inspired the film’s soft watercolor backgrounds and beautiful palette.

Bambi

“Bambi,” Walt Disney’s beloved coming-of-age story, will thrill audiences with its breathtaking animation and characters who will touch your heart: Bambi, the wide-eyed fawn, his playful pal Thumper, the lovable skunk Flower and wise Friend Owl. (C) 1942 Disney

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched Bambi and I forgot just how adorable it is. As an animal lover I especially love all the characters. The characters are so precious. This coming of age story is a family favorite and great for all audiences. Small children might get upset when (SPOILER ALERT although I’m not sure it’s a spoiler alert on a 75 year old movie LOL) Bambi’s mother dies. Ok, many adults don’t like that part either, but as sad as it is, it’s a part of life and makes for some great discussion. And the movie goes right into a cheerful spring song so it’s hard to be sad for long. The backgrounds are done in such beautiful pastels and the characters are bright and lifelike. Fun fact- Did you know that Walt Disney brought in live animals for the animators to study to make the animals more realistic? That’s one of the things that makes Bambi so special. You’ll learn about that and so much more on the bonus material of this Blu-ray.

BONUS MATERIAL (BLU-RAY & DIGITAL* HD) INCLUDES:

BRAND NEW:

· THE BAMBI EFFECT – “Bambi” was full of innovations for its time. Let’s take a look at how those past innovations affected future Disney animated titles all the way up to today. (I love how this bonus feature shows how so many Disney movies, such as Lion King and Zootopia, were influenced by how Bambi was made. In this part they even talk about the parallels between Lion King and Bambi that I had never thought about before. Check it out.)

· STUDIO STORIES: “BAMBI” – Recordings of Walt Disney. Listen in on intimate moments where he discusses the challenges, pitfalls and triumphs during the production of “Bambi.” (This is my favorite bonus feature of the movie. Hearing the behind the scenes stories is fascinating!)

· DELETED SCENE: BAMBI’S ICE AND SNOW – Bambi coaxes Thumper and his brothers and sisters to come play on the ice during the first snow.

· DELETED SCENE: THE GRASSHOPPER – A grasshopper confronts Bambi and Thumper and finds himself in quite a predicament.

· BAMBI FAWN FACTS – Think you know everything there is to know about Bambi and his forest companions? Well, it’s time to discover some fun real-life facts about the creatures that live in the forest he calls home. (This is a great bonus feature, especially for children. There is lots of interesting information about all the forest animals in this section.)

· OSWALD THE LUCKY RABBIT: “AFRICA BEFORE DARK” – Oswald Short.

· CELEBRATING TYRUS WONG (DIGITAL EXCLUSIVE) – A heartfelt look at the man who played a key role in the success of “Bambi.” Much like Mary Blair and Eyvind Earle, Tyrus Wong had a unique signature style all to his own. The soft water-colored backgrounds and beautiful palettes in “Bambi” were inspired by Tyrus’ concept art paintings. (Tyrus Wong was such an innovator with the beautiful impressionistic watercolor backgrounds in Bambi that are so beautiful but don’t take you away from the characters and the story.)

· DELETED SCENES – Two Leaves, Bambi Stuck on a Reed, Winter Grass, Twitterpated

· THE MAKING OF BAMBI: A PRINCE IS BORN

o STORY: TELLING THE TALE
