Condo life is arguably more appealing in the modern age than it has ever been before. The reduced amount of maintenance work makes it a fantastic option for the career-minded individuals. Meanwhile, the agreeable costs are also a massive draw.

However, there is no denying that living in this type of building brings its own challenges. However, if you follow the steps below, you should find that this is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle.

What more could you want from your home?

Upgrade Your Home

Living in a condo isn’t overly different from any other type of property. Once you are behind the privacy of your own door, it’s your responsibility to create a homely atmosphere.

Different people have different preferences in terms of style. However, there is no denying that your home improvement project should start with the living room. After all, the clue is in the title and this is the place to live.

Bringing your personality to the property is a must, especially as most condos are designed to a uniformed aesthetic. Once you’ve tailored it to your desires, you’ll find that the place if far more comfortable and will start to feel like yours.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for added luxury, you can’t go wrong with simple ideas like fresh bed sheets and bath towels. The improvements this will make are astonishing.

Get On With Other Residents

Life behind closed doors is pretty much the same as any other type of property. However, it is worth remembering that your neighbors are in far closer proximity. It might not make that much of a difference, but you should at least try to maintain a positive relationship.

By no means have you got to be best friends, but you should at least try to find your way to first name terms with your neighbors. A quick smile in the morning can put you in a great frame of mind. More importantly, though, you’ll have someone to confide in if a problem arises in the home.

The last thing anyone wants is to fall out with their neighbors. However, this feels even more important when living on top of each other. For your own peace of mind, make a conscious effort to be civil.

Become A Board Member

If you want something done in life, you best do it yourself. It might be an old cliché, but it rings as true today as it ever did before. If you want the overall living to be more comfortable, then you need to make your voice heard.

The only guaranteed way to do this is to join the board. Fitting these responsibilities this into your already busy schedule can be an issue. But with the help of condo board management, you should be able to retain your spare time while still gaining the benefits of being involved.

As part of the board, you’ll be able to help make those living changes to benefit the residents. Most importantly, you’ll be able to make life more comfortable for you.

You can also climb Kintamani’s towering active volcano, or you can instead relax on the sandy shores and take a dip into the crystal clear water that surrounds you.

A luxurious honeymoon destination is just what you need after planning an elaborate wedding celebration, so go ahead and splurge on a luxury destination that you’ll never forget.

The environment is a hot topic nowadays. Everyone is always looking for ways to be friendly to the environment. One of the biggest ways you can do this is through your home. Have a look at some of the ways you can have an eco-friendly home:

Roof

The roof is one of the places you can make your house the most eco-friendly. If you want to create a home that’s good for the environment, you should probably install solar panels. By doing this, you’re able to generate your own electricity and energy from the sun. So, you won’t have to use any from the national grid and don’t need to have your gas boiler on to generate heat. It can save on carbon emissions and limit the burning of fossil fuels. Plus, it can save you a bucket load on your utility bills. It’s also a good idea you get an eco-friendly roofing type as well. Why not consider using recycled shingles instead of boring old slate?

Flooring

You may not be aware of this, but you can actually get eco-friendly flooring. It’s true, there are some flooring options out there that are better for the environment than others. Empire do a hardwood floor made from bamboo, which is said to be a lot more eco-friendly. If you opt for this in your house, you’ll probably be saving a lot more trees than if you used another hardwood floor. It’s not just bamboo that’s eco-friendly, you can get cork flooring or even glass tiles. I find that glass tiles are a wonderful alternative to normal tiling, they’re perfect for the kitchen. A simple change in flooring choice can be one way you can make your home a lot more eco-friendly.

Lighting

The lighting in your home plays a key role in whether or not you’re eco-friendly. Most homes aren’t very eco-friendly because they leave the lights on at all times. Or, they use bulbs that burn so bright and use up a lot of electricity. If you aren’t already using eco-friendly light bulbs, then you need to start. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be using them. Start being more aware of leaving the lights on in your home too. Turn them off during the day and open the curtains instead. When lights are on, they use up electricity

Recycle

There are a couple of ways you can use recycling to be more eco-friendly at home. For starters, you can start buying things that have been recycled. Think about buying recycled furniture for your house, rather than getting some that isn’t. Buy recycled toilet paper and kitchen towels too, basically, if something can be bought recycled, buy it! The second thing you can do is recycle in the home. Have a food waste bin to recycle any leftovers from your meals. Instead of putting your rubbish in a standard bin bag to get shipped to a landfill, separate it and recycle it. You can recycle pretty much everything these days, and it’s very easy. By recycling, you ensure you’re doing your bit for the environment.

Taking Care of an Elderly Relative: What You Need to Know

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Taking care of an elderly relative is something many people have to do every day. As we age, it isn’t always possible to take care of ourselves, and family members would rather do the job than have a stranger do it. If you think it’ll soon be time for you to take care of an elderly relative, read through this guide to help you:

You Shouldn’t do Everything Alone

As you know and love your elderly relative best, it can be tempting to do everything alone. You know how they like certain things to be done, and you want to be sure they are safe. However, you shouldn’t do everything alone. You need to set boundaries. Doing everything on your own is not healthy, and you will likely end up getting exhausted and burning out. You have lots of options for getting the help you need. You could ask for help from friends and relatives, or look into companies specialising in aged care. You can take it in turns to go in throughout the day, alternate days, or work out a schedule that suits everybody.

Elderly in Brightonpicture credit

Care Homes are an Option

If you’re truly getting exhausted, and your relative needs round the clock care, care homes are an option. Some of them get a bad rep, but they can be a massive help and feel just like home. They are clean and tidy, and the staff will focus on working out what makes your relative tick to ensure they have the best quality of life.

Look Into Carer’s Allowance

Caring for an elderly relative can be a full time job. Make sure you look into carer’s allowance. You’re usually entitled to this if you care for your relative for more than 35 hours per week. This should help you with supplies and different things you need for your relative.

Emotional Support is Important Too

Not only do you need financial support, emotional support is important too. Make sure you’re speaking to somebody you trust about caring for your elderly relative. There are plenty of groups full of people like you who do the same thing too, so speaking to somebody going through the same thing may help. You shouldn’t feel bad for getting stressed or frustrated; it’s totally normal and talking about it can help.

You Need Breaks Too

You might feel guilty taking a break from caring for your relative, but you need to have breaks too. When the time comes, you can either put them in respite care or hire somebody to go in and check on them. If you take the time to research and choose the right people for the job, then there will be nothing to worry about and you can enjoy your break!

Hopefully, this has shed some light on what caring for your elderly relative is like and what you should do to make it as easy on everybody as possible. It isn’t an easy job, but everybody can have quality of life if it’s done right. Try not to stress!

Pre-Winter Home Maintenance Checks All Homeowners Should Perform

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

As a homeowner, I like to ensure that I always take good care of my home. Luckily, I have quite a bit of DIY experience, so when it comes to checking my house before Winter, I know what to look for. However, the other day when I was chatting with a friend about DIY, I realized that not every homeowner has the knowledge to take care of their home.

The extreme weather that comes with Winter – snow, rain and high winds can put our homes under a lot of strain. These nasty conditions can lead to all sorts of problems, from burst pipes to overflowing drains. That’s why, before the cold weather hits, it’s crucial that you check your home for any issues that may need fixing.

Commercial_Box_GutterCredit for photo

To help you do that, I have put together a guide to all the most important checks that you should make before Winter arrives. You can find out everything that you need to know, here:

Check your roof

If your roof itself, or any of the tiles are damaged or cracked, this can lead to leaks. If water leaks through your roof into your attic, and you don’t notice, this can lead to your roof rotting. To prevent this from happening, it’s crucial that before the wet winter months, that you check your roof.

Start off by going into your attic with a flashlight, looking for any gaps where sunlight is shining in. If you can see light streaming through a small area of your roof, this is a sign that there may be a hole or loose tile. Once you have checked the inside of the roof, the next step is to go up onto the roof and check the exterior. If you can see any holes or broken or cracked tiles, these will need to be fixed. You can fix these yourself, or you can call a contractor to do it for you.

Unclog your gutters

Use a ladder to look inside your gutters, if there are any blockages, like leaves or debris, remove them. If you fail to check your gutters, and they are blocked, rainwater may run down the sides of your house, causing damage.

Check your drains

Your home’s drainage system all links up, so it’s important to check both your inside and outside drains for any blockages. A blockage outside could lead to rainwater left standing in your garden. This could not only damage your driveway and patio but also, your home’s foundation.

If you think that any of your drains has a blockage, then that drain needs clearing. You could attempt to do this yourself, but it’s probably best to leave it to the experts.

Give your boiler a once over

During the Winter months, your boiler is crucial for keeping you and your family warm. That’s why, before the cold weather sets in, it’s best to give it a once over.

If you aren’t sure how to check your boiler is in good shape, it might be worth calling a plumber to service it over for you. That way, if there are any issues, he’ll be able to spot them and fix them for you so as during the Winter your boiler doesn’t break down.

If you want to take care of your home, it’s crucial that before the Winter that you perform all the checks above. So that if there are any issues, you can get them sorted out sooner, rather than later.

Why I Built A Barn For My Children

Special post written by Laura for my readers

Most of my friends laughed until they were blue in the face when I told them about my idea. They thought that building a barn for my kids was an incredibly funny concept, and they just couldn’t understand my motives. Once their laughter had subsided, I had the chance to explain my reasons. You see, the barn on our land is not like a standard space for keeping animals. We do have a couple of cows, but that’s not why we paid for the barn. The building was created by an Amish specialist living in our area. So, the room is more functional than you might expect. To set the record straight, I’ve listed all my reasons below. Hopefully, you won’t all think I’m mad after checking them out.

2702435836_85a500c21c_zLink

The barn provides a play area

We don’t have a summer house on our land, and so the kids had nowhere to play. After seeing an advert online for a local Amish expert that specializes in barns, I had to know more. Luckily, he quoted me a very affordable price. The entire building cost thousands less than the average summer house. Plus, it is more than ten times the size. I split the barn into two sections. One for keeping the cows, and one for the kids. We put their bikes in there, and lots of other items from our garage.

The barn keeps our animals healthy

As I’ve already said, we keep a couple of cows on our land. My children were worried about their health when they were out in the field all night. Also, there had been a spate of nighttime attacks in the area. I was terrified we’d wake up one morning to find dead cows lying in our field. That idea worried me a lot. My kids wouldn’t know how to deal with that yet. They’re only young. So, getting a barn seemed like the obvious solution. I even installed a security system that should alert us if something happens during the night.

There’s lots of free space in the barn for more things

My children are starting to grow, and so we knew more space was essential. While we’re not 100% certain how we’re going to use it yet, there is more than enough room to expand in the barn. My husband discussed the possibility of homeschooling our kids from next year. If that happens, we’ll do everything in the barn. It’s not like the cold and drafty building you might imagine. In fact, we’ve got electricity in there and a flat screen TV. So, it wouldn’t be too hard to convert some of the areas into a school room.

You should now have a good understanding of why I erected a barn for my kids. In truth, it was partly for the animals too. However, it sounded a lot funnier if I told my friends the barn was there for the kids. My husband has already covered the walls in canoes and tools, and I hope we do manage to homeschool in that space. It’s warm enough thanks to the heating system we’ve installed.

How To Improve Your Chances Of Buying Your Dream Home

The competition for buying homes across the country has never been fiercer. So, when you find what you think is your dream house, there’s a good chance that you won’t end up as the lucky buyer.

It can be heartbreaking to have your dreams ripped away from you like that, but in a tough market, what can you do? It’s happened to all of us at some point, so I thought it was time to come up with some clever ways to increase your chance of winning.

Nothing’s guaranteed, of course, but these tips should help you improve your chances of success.

Spot an up-and-coming area

Expensive places to live cost a lot because they are already established. People like the security that comes with an established area, because everything is already there for them. However, if you are willing to put in some groundwork, you can find an up-and-coming area.

The house prices will be much cheaper, and they will also rise quickly as the location becomes more established. There are a few clues to look out for. When there are a lot of improvements made to the area, you will notice independent shops cropping up all over the place.

There will also be an effort by the local state to improve transport links. So, keep your eyes on the developments in your local areas and you should be able to get a better home for your budget.

5092054200_af67d7ce21_zLee Ruk

Find a local estate agent

Although real estate agents have a duty to represent the seller, they know the local markets inside out. So, they are in the best position to advise buyers, too.

They will know which sellers want to sell up quickly, which could be a sign they are willing to negotiate a deal. Local realtors also have a lot more property on their books than you will find on major home finding services online. Take a look here for a good example – www.searchbaltimorerealestate.com. As you can see, they have at least 25% more properties than you will see on the likes of Trulia and Zillow.

So, get yourself connected to a local estate agent or two and you will have a better chance of coming up with a bargain.

Remove your part of the chain

‘The chain’ can put the skids on many people’s chances of buying their dream home. If you are already living in a house, then you might not be able to sell it and buy a new place at the same time.

Timing is critical when you purchase a house. There are a lot of people out there who will sell for less rather than waiting three, six or twelve months while you find a buyer. So, if you can remove this complication – by selling up and renting for a while, for example – you will find you are a much more attractive buyer.

You could also get pre-approval for your home loan. Anything that you can do to make that sale go through quicker will be a bonus, and could be the difference between you and another interested party.

Well, there you have it. I hope this has helped you think of some ways you can improve your chances of finding your dream home. I wish you all the best with your move!

Traveling with E-Cigs: What You Need to Know

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Hand with electronic cigarette agains white background

If you’re a vaper who’s planning to go on vacation, it’s highly likely that you’ll be planning on taking your trusty e-cigarette with you – vacations can be traps for many ex-smokers with the tempting offer of duty free and cheap cigarettes, and many vacation destinations are in locations that still heavily promote the tobacco industry. As an ex-smoker, you’ll be wanting to avoid all of this, so what better way to take your e-cigarette along for the ride in order for you to be able to get your nicotine fix as and when you need it without succumbing to smoking conventional cigarettes. Here are just a few things that you’ll need to know before travelling with your e-cig.

Some Countries Have Banned Them

Yes – some countries have actually banned e-cigs but continue to allow the smoking of regular tobacco and cigarettes, a move we haven’t quite been able to get our head around either. However, if you’re travelling to one of these countries, you will need to be aware that if you are seen using your e-cigarette, you’re likely to have it taken off you and could also be landed a hefty fine. Visitors to Singapore will be faced with a fine if caught using an e-cig, and they’re also banned in Brazil and Egypt. It’s a good idea to check the legal status of the country you’re visiting regarding e-cigarettes and vaping before you go, as regulations vary between different countries.

Flying and Vaping

The vast majority of airlines will not allow you to vape whilst on the flight, and treat electronic cigarettes much the same as a conventional cigarette – you will usually need to go to the smoker’s shelter or designated smoking area to vape at an airport. When it comes to getting through customs you will usually be allowed to take an e-cigarette and up to two batteries in your hand luggage, and you can put e-liquids in the clear plastic bag provided they’re under 100ml and the total of your liquids does not exceed 1 liter.

Buying Accessories Abroad

Many countries abroad do not have a great selection of e-liquids and other e-cigarette accessories on sale, so it’s a wise idea to stock up before you go and take as many e-liquids and spare parts (which can be bought from tastyvapor.us) along with you as you can. If you’re visiting some European countries such as Portugal you may be able to buy e-cigarettes and e-liquids, however they are not quite as popular yet as they are in the United States and United Kingdom, and you may find it’s a bit of a task to find a basic e-liquid mixture, plus you should also be aware that many other countries aren’t subject to the same regulations and the e-liquids might have additional ingredients in them that you’re not used to.

Have you travelled with an e-cigarette? Where did you travel to, and were there any restrictions? If you have any advice for fellow travelling vapers, we’d love to hear from you in the comments.

My Preparation Tips for an Amazing Christmas

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

I love Christmas time; it’s maybe my favorite time of year. I love the weather, and I love the togetherness too. To make sure I always have an amazing Christmas experience I make sure to prepare myself properly. In my house, these are the tips and techniques we like to use to give ourselves a memorable Christmas.

Get a Fake Tree

One of the biggest factors debates at Christmas time is whether to get a real tree or an artificial one. Now, there are advantages and disadvantages to both, of course. But I always tend to favour an artificial one. They are much more practical and efficient. We use a fake tree, and we have had the same one for years. It saves us an additional expense each year, and it means I don’t have to worry about cleaning up pine needles all the time!

Light Up the Place

What is Christmas without a bit of decoration? You need to embrace the festive season and decorate your home as much as you can. And a great way to do this is to hang Christmas lights. Battery powered Christmas lights are excellent for the tree, or for the walls of any room. If you want to get the best possible effect, you should look at using different coloured lights. Have a think about the different places you can hang your lights, and the impact they will have.

Plan the Food

You need to focus on what you’re going to be eating at Christmas time. This is often a great opportunity for people to indulge themselves. In my house, we like to choose the joint of meat we have carefully. We’re very particular about Christmas dinner. I would suggest that you make a list of all the food you want to get over the festive period. Perhaps even plan out the meals as well. This gives you much better preparation and makes for a calm Christmas in the kitchen.

Do Secret Santa

We all know that the biggest expense at Christmas is buying presents. It takes up time and money, and it’s very stressful. It’s difficult to know when to start buying, and what gifts to get. And that’s why I came up with the Secret Santa idea in my household. This means that everybody gives and receives one present, up to a certain value of course. Secret Santa is an excellent way to reduce the cost and chaos involved in present buying. So I’d recommend you use this for Christmas this year.

Get into the Festive Spirit

I’ve found that the best way to enjoy Christmas is to get into the festive spirit. Embrace the period fully, and you’ll get more out of it. This means sending Christmas cards, listening to Christmas songs, and drinking mulled wine. If you can get into the festive spirit, you’re going to be much more organised and prepared for a fantastic Christmas.

Christmas_bauble_black_and_whiteImage Source

If you want to have the best possible Christmas, I would suggest following my tips. It’s a wonderful time, and should be full of joy and happiness. With a bit of preparation, you should be able to craft the perfect Christmas experience for the whole family.

4 Guaranteed Ways To Improve Your Home On A Modest Budget

It doesn’t matter if you’ve lived in your home for 10 years or 10 minutes. We all want to upgrade our properties from time to time. After all, we work our entire lives to create the perfect environment for the family to grow.

Unfortunately, there is one word that usually holds us back. That word is budget. However, a lack of funds doesn’t have to end your hopes of improving the home over the coming months. Here are some relatively cheap and easy ideas that will bring noticeable differences.

Repair Instead of Buying

Is there anything more frustrating than not being able to complete basic tasks around the home? Unfortunately, problems will arise from time to time. While it can be easy to ignore the issues, fixing them immediately is a must.

The faults won’t magically disappear, so you must find a solution. At the same time, nobody wants to spend more money than is necessary. We’re quick to throw items away, but it can be just as easy to fix your appliances. And a dish washer repair service, for example, is much cheaper than buying a new model completely.

A home that works properly will be far easier to enjoy.

Bring The Great Outdoors Inside

It’s quite amazing how a little fresh air can improve our mood and general well-being. This notion could be the secret weapon to keeping your home happy all year round.

Making the home feel fresh isn’t difficult, and a little work goes a long way. These tips should help you achieve the desired impact. If you do have the money for significant investment, you could invest in sliding doors to open your home out to the garden too.

The home will feel cleaner and fresher. It’s something that will benefit the entire family. Don’t underestimate how important this simple upgrade can be.

autumn-211800_1280Source:

Invest In The Bathroom

Most families don’t appreciate the bathroom as they should. It’s a huge shame too because we all know how a little luxury can make our lives feel brighter.

You don’t have to visit the local spa to enjoy those comforts. Adding luxury to the bathroom can be achieved with a few simple oils. Meanwhile, increasing your water pressure will make showers far more enjoyable too.

Every home should allow the occupier to relax after a long day at work. The bathroom is easily one of the best (and cheapest) spaces to achieve this.

Make Better Use Of Space

Got a garage, but leave your car on the driveway? Or a spare bedroom that only gets for one weekend every six months? Maybe you have a downstairs office that is being used as a storage space?

If you’ve answered yes to any of the above, rectifying these issues must be your priority. Declutter the space, and give it a purpose. It doesn’t matter if you make it a gym, or a playroom. The key is that you are using the available space to maximum effect.

Simply making better use of the areas will instantly make the home feel bigger. With this, you’ll have far greater possibilities around the home.
