Any parent will tell you that children grow up fast. Really fast! The years fly by when you’re looking after a family, and it’s hard to stop and take it all in. That’s why it’s so important to capture and preserve all the memories along the way. One day, you can look back on them, and remember all the fun you had. Best of all, you can show the children when they’re grown up, and laugh at all the memories. It’s so easy to fly past without capturing those perfect moments. So, here are a few ways you can hold onto them.

Prioritize experiences

The most important aspect is creating the memories. As a parent, you should always try to prioritize experiences rather than material possessions. The more adventures and experiences you have, the more there is to capture. Sometimes, the best way to preserve memories is in your mind. And the only way to do that is by creating memorable moments in the first place. Take holidays, go on adventures, and enjoy this wonderful time with your children. That’s something that you can never forget.

Diary and journals

With photos and videos, you can capture a moment (we’ll come to that shortly). But, it’s impossible to capture a sense of excitement or emotion. It doesn’t always capture how you feel at that moment. That’s why diaries and journals are a great way to write down your experiences as a family. How did it feel to watch them take their first steps, or say their first word? What was it like when your little one spent their first day at school? These are things that sometimes fade from memory, but you can capture that emotion with words.

Photographs and video

Photos and video are the most obvious and natural way to capture every second of your experiences. Try to take as many photos as possible throughout your family life. Even the dullest days are nice to look back on when you’re older. You could even use a professional team like Kiss Photography to capture a family portrait once a year. You can see the progression and growth year after year! Videos are also a wonderful way to capture real situations, and watch them back years later.

Keep a memories box

To some, it’s just a box of junk. But to you, a memories box will be your most treasured possession. Try to keep a momento of trinkets throughout your family’s journey. Everything from the children’s artwork from school to certificates. From holiday plane tickets to trophies. Each of these things will mean something to you in the future. It’s always nice to have a physical reminder of a moment in time.

Time capsule

Last of all, you can collect all sorts of memories, photos, and trinkets, and put them in a time capsule! Hide them away, and bury them in a safe place. In twenty years, you can dig them up, and reminisce about all the past memories!

Don’t let a day go by without capturing and preserving those precious memories. You’ll always regret it if you do.

My older daughter really wants to work with animals and help out so I’m looking into a place that she can volunteer with animals. My younger daughter is innovative and loves making new things. Her current passion is origami so I bought her some pretty paper and she’s having a great time getting creative and making things for friends and family. No matter their passion, kids just want to be supported and loved. 🙂

6 Ways to Build Lasting Family Memories

Time seems to go so quickly when you start a family. It seems like one day you were bringing a new life into the world, and then you’re saying goodbye to them as they pack up and move out. Many parents can find it a whirlwind, that seems over before it’s really begun. If you want to cherish all those precious moments, then you need to build long lasting family memories. Not sure what I mean? Here are six examples.

6027975310_7398ce31a3_zImage credit

1. New Tradition

If you want to pass long lasting memories onto your children, consider coming up with a new family tradition. It could be that you have a reunion once a year, on the same day every year. Perhaps it’s that you all have to go out for ice cream after a movie. These memories are something that will stick with everyone forever. When your children have their own children, they’ll be able to pass those traditions on.

2. See the World

Taking your children to see different parts of the world will provide everyone with some incredible memories, that will never leave them. If you have the money, try and take a one-of-a-kind trip with the whole family. It could be driving around Europe in a campervan or visiting a Safari in Africa. If you’re strapped for cash, then you can still tick this box. Just opt for budget friendly ways to see different parts of your local area. Like camping in the garden or playing in the rain.

3. Build a Scrapbook

This is a great way of creating family memories that will truly last. There will be right there on paper! Fill your scrapbook with quotes, cinema tickets, pictures, newspaper cuttings, and anything else relevant to you. Look for a family photographer who can take a beautiful picture of all of you together. You can then use this for the front of the scrapbook. This is something that will be kept for generations to come.

4. Family Hobby

The key to building long lasting family memories is to spend plenty of time together. However, you’re not going to have very many tales from sitting in front of the TV. You should all take up a new hobby together. It could be camping, hiking, playing tennis, cooking. Something you can all do at the weekends when you’re free. You’ll always remember the stories from the days spent together on your favorite hobby.

14119265858_20de9d6a74_zImage credit

5. Experience a First

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do, that no one in the family has done? If you want a memory that will last forever, then do it together. It could be something wild like bungee jumping. It could just be volunteering for a local charity. Talk about all of the ideas you’ve had and work out which ones your family would like to do. You can then all experience a first together.

6. Laugh. Lots.

Last, but by no means least. When everyone has grown up and moved away, you’ll always remember the laughter. Instead of getting annoyed because things aren’t going to plan, laugh instead. Laugh at it raining so hard it washes your tent away. Laugh at the BBQ setting alight on family day. Laugh and everyone will laugh with you. That’s the key to making long lasting memories.

How do you build lasting memories with your family? Hopefully some of these ideas will become useful. And maybe even make the time slow down a little.

How to Get Your Family Fitter This Year

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Improving the health of your whole family is always a tricky proposition. They’ll probably be quite resistant at first, so you’ll have to get clever and find new ways to get them active. Here are some ideas to help.

Limit Screen Time

There are no benefits to sitting in front of the television or computer screen all day. These kinds of sedentary activities are part of the reason why a lot of us are putting on so much weight and becoming so unhealthy. They stop us, not just young people, from getting out and doing active things.

It’s not necessary to ban your kids from watching television or playing computer games completely. You just need to put a limit on these luxuries and ensure that when they’re not watching television, they’re doing something healthy and active instead. That means getting them outside and playing sports.

Get a Dog

Children love their pets, and if they don’t have a pet, they spend a lot of time asking you to get them one. But there might be more benefits to having a family dog than you might initially think. Dogs give you a concrete and unavoidable reason to get outside and exercise. They’ll demand that you take them out and walk them, even when you don’t feel like it.

This will be great for the health of the whole family. So, next time your son or daughter begs you for a family dog, say yes. But insist that they have to do their fair share of the difficult stuff like cleaning up after and taking it for a walk. It’s a great way to get them active!

Encourage Competition

Most kids enjoy a little competitiveness, so tap into this when you’re looking for new ways to get them up off the sofa and outside. You could encourage them to join a local sports team and get involved with an entirely new sport to them. This is often much more appealing than just kicking a ball around in the garden or running about in the park.

It gives real purpose to exercise, which can often be missing for kids. It’ll also have more chance of holding their attention because it requires a little dedication and teamwork. If they feel that they’re building friendships and playing as part of a team, they will be more likely to keep going back.

Keep on Top of the Family’s Health

Health and fitness aren’t just about preventing illnesses by leading a healthy lifestyle. It’s also about getting checked by medical professionals and having problems dealt with. The whole family should have regular check-ups with your family doctor if you don’t do this already. They’ll also be able to recommend ways to improve your family’s health.

The first thing to think about is health insurance. Obviously, if you’re not all fully insured, you need to fix that. Some insurers offer family insurance policies so you won’t have to pay for different policies for each member of the family.

We all want to keep our family as healthy as possible, so follow these tips today!

Top 7 Reasons to Stay in an Orlando All Star Vacation Home

Disclosure- I went on an all expense paid press trip sponsored by Disney.  All opinions are 100% my own.

all star vacation homes front 2Photo Credit- All Star Vacation Homes

Last month while I was a part of Disney’s #MonkeyKingdomEvent in Orlando, 24 other bloggers and I had the opportunity to stay in one of several luxury All Star Vacation Homes.  Located at 8039 Acadia Estates Ct., the home I stayed in was incredible.  It is 3,183 square feet, has 5 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and sleeps a maximum of 12 guests.  Normally my family and I stay at either a Disney property or an hotel in the Disney area but that was before my experience at the All Star Vacation Home.  There are so many reasons to stay in a vacation home instead of a hotel.  Here are a few of them.

BEAUTY

DSC_0119 (1024x681)When you step into your luxury All Star Vacation Home it’s like stepping into a model home.  It is beautifully decorated yet feels like home.  It is the perfect comfortable home away from home for your Orlando vacation.

 SPACE

Floorplan

When you stay in an All Star Vacation Home it’s not like staying in a small hotel room where you have no privacy and everyone has to share one or two rooms with little space to spread out and relax.  The All Star Vacation Homes are 2 story homes with several master bedrooms, twin bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, a dining room, kitchen, pool, and more!  You and your family won’t be tripping all over each other in this house!  Each room also has plenty of closet space, drawer space, plus extra linens and towels to make your stay more comfortable.

roomsEveryone can have their own room to spread out and relax in.  Want to vacation with your extended family?  No problem!  There are plenty of rooms (and bathrooms) for everyone!  Instead of spending money on several hotel rooms, this is a much better way for a large family to spend their vacation.
Nemo Room (1024x681)

They even have fun themed rooms for the kids!  How cute is this Nemo room?  One of the other houses has a princess room..

COMFORT

couchThere are so many comfortable places to put your feet up and relax in these homes.  The bed I stayed in was so plush and cozy that I feel asleep quickly and slept like a baby every night.  There are plush reclining chairs in the home theater, cushy couches in the living room, and lots of chairs out by the pool to enjoy on your down time.  When we vacation we’re usually going, going, going so it’s nice to have a place that is comfortable to just relax and enjoy some much needed down time.  When you stay at a hotel the couches are usually pretty hard as are the chairs and you have to fight for chairs around the pool.  No need to worry about any of that when you stay in a private home.  If you stay in one of these vacation homes make sure to leave a day or two free just to stay home and relax.  It will be much needed after several crazy days at the parks.

ENTERTAINMENT

entertainmentIf you stay at an All Star Vacation Home you don’t have to leave the house to have fun.  Upstairs there is a full sized video game and a pool table so get ready to rack ’em up!  Need to do a little work, there’s even a comfortable desk plus each house has it’s own WiFi.
screening roomWant to watch your favorite shows or even a movie?  Not only is there a television in the living room area but there is a plush, comfortable media room for everyone to enjoy.  I just love how it was decorated with lots of classic movie posters.

COMFORTS OF HOME

kitchenOne of the things I love most about staying in a vacation home is having a full kitchen with all the comforts of home at my disposal.  It is gorgeous and they’ve really thought of everything.  I didn’t get to cook at much in the kitchen because we were kept pretty busy on our press trip but I did cook a few times and this kitchen really had me wishing that it was my kitchen at home!

comforts of home 2The kitchens at the All Star Vacation Homes are fully stocked with every appliance, utensil, cookware, and dishware you might possibly need. They’ve thought of everything- full size side by side refrigerator with ice maker and water in the door, gas stove, toaster, coffeemaker, blender, electric can opener, measuring cups, and so much more!  They even stock the house with dish soap, a roll of paper towel, and detergent for the dishwasher plus containers to save your leftovers!  Save money on dining out and cook some of your meals in your home away from home.

diningReady for breakfast or a midnight snack?  You can dine comfortably in the kitchen nook area.  Want a more formal dining experience?  Check out the beautiful dining room table that seats six.

laundry

Don’t worry about bringing your entire closet with you on your trip.  Each house features a full size washer and dryer so you can do a quick load and have clean clothes.  Do a load before you leave and you won’t have to worry about doing mountains of laundry when you return from your vacation.  That is usually one of the things I hate about coming back from vacation.  It was so nice coming home and having all my laundry done for a change.

GREAT FOR FAMILIES

highchairMy girls are tweens now so we don’t travel with lots of gear anymore (thankfully!) but I was pleasantly surprised to find a high chair and a jumper for children as well as a childproof gate around the pool.  Those would have been such a blessing when my girls were younger.  While my family doesn’t need the baby gear, the All Star Vacation Homes are so family friendly for all types of families.  It would be so nice to stay in a house where I wouldn’t have to worry about my kids being too noisy, as they often are.

PRIVATE POOL AND HOT TUB

poolHate trying to find a towel or a lounge chair at a crowded hotel pool?  Don’t like swimming with that creepy old man watching you and your kids?  Or the rowdy teenagers on vacation from college?  That’s not a problem at an All Star Vacation Home.  Step right outside to your private pool with ample space for lounging around.  Feel like spending a relaxing day by the pool and in the hot tub?  There’s even a barbecue if you want to have a cookout.

With so many amazing comforts and amenities, once you stay at an All Star Vacation Home, you’ll never want to stay in a hotel again!

EPCOT’s Living Seas and Dolphin Research #MonkeyKingdomEvent

When we were in Orlando at the Monkey Kingdom Event, 24 other bloggers and I spent some time in Epcot’s Living Seas exhibit and had the opportunity to watch a dolphin  research session.  The Living Seas has always been one of my favorite parts of Epcot because of all of the sea life they have there including all sorts of fish, sharks, stingrays, and more.

P1240500 (1024x768)The manatees were mesmerizing.
P1240504 (1024x768)At this moment I was wishing I was the diver in the water.
P1240507 (1024x768)
P1240512 (768x1024)
P1240554 (1024x768) Look, I found Nemo!!!

P1240560 (1024x768)

Did you know coral only grows the size of a speck of dust per year?  It’s amazing how big they get knowing how slow they grow!

P1240561 (1024x768)

Fun Facts we learned at Epcot’s Living Seas:

  • There are 5.7 million gallons of water in the Living Seas at Epcot.
  • The living Seas is AZA accredited (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) just like the zoo at Animal Kingdom and Animal Kingdom Lodge.
  • They only feed the fish and other sea animals restaurant quality food.
  • The sea life at the Living Seas learn to come to food so they will come easily to their trainers and vets when they need an exam.
  • Sharks eat sick fish which helps get these sick fish out of the fish population so humans won’t end up eating sick fish.
  • I think the most fascinating thing we learned is that Nemo ride scenery starts at night.  Then guests go  down the beach until they make it into the sea where the ride starts.  This is just like the path a baby sea turtle takes.  I’ve been on the ride many times and never realized the symbolism before.

20150417_153206 (1024x576)

P1240541 (1024x768)My favorite part of our experience in the Living Seas was watching a dolphin training session.  The dolphins have been taught to recognize various object.  The trainer holds up an object against the glass tank and the dolphin makes specific sounds that represent each different object.  There are audio devices inside the take that transmit these sounds to other researchers who are outside of the tank listening for these sounds.  It was so amazing to watch these beautiful, intelligent animals.  I hope to one day do Disney’s Dolphins in Depth tour where guests get into the water with the dolphins.
