gregWhile attending the Monkey Kingdom Event in Orlando last week for the release of Monkey Kingdom which is in theaters now, 24 bloggers and I had the opportunity to chat with Greg Peccie, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Animal Operations Manager.

Step into the heart of Africa at this magnificent Resort hotel. Inspired by the traditional African kraal, the horseshoe-curved design provides spectacular views of 4 lush savannas that over 200 hoofed animals and birds call home. Delight in dazzling pool areas, exciting animal programs and one of the largest collections of African art in the United States as you experience your own African safari adventure with a touch of Disney magic.

  • Every Disney resort has an activity calendar with events and activities that are happening at that resport.  Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has even more going on.  Animal Kingdom Lodge is like it’s own vacation because there is so much to do there.  It can take several days just to explore all there is to do at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge such as activities with cultural reps, a recreation team, pools, and just checking out all of the art and architecture.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has cultural reps that serve as Savanna Guides.  They come from Africa on a 12 month visa to share their culture and experiences but they are also on the animal education team.  They lead activities and specialize in things like hospitality, conservation, safari driving, and more.) They bring the sense of Africa to life in the resort.
  • You can Dine with Animal Specialists at the Sanaa restaurant at the resort (keep an eye out for my upcoming review of Sanaa).  The specialist will be an animal keeper, a manager, or Greg Peccie, the Operations Manager himself.  Mr. Peccie is also an animal curator for the lodge.
  •  Dine with Animal Specialists is a great way for guests to try new foods and learn about animals.  You don’t have to stay on property or be a Walt Disney World guest to come for this experience.  It is $49 for adults 10 and up and $29 for children 3-9, while it is recommended for children 8 and up.
  • For all the other tours offered at the lodge participants do need to be a WDW hotel guest.DSC_0036 (681x1024)
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is 46 acres large and has over 250 animals.  These animals don’t go to the parks, they live at this resort.  They are their own self contained zoo.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge’s daytime animal team has 25 animal keepers, 4 managers, plus Greg Peccie the general manager. A second night team works from 6 pm to 5 am and consists of 10 keepers and 2 managers.
  • At Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge it is a 24 hour operation to take care of the animals and the animals are given the highest level of care.  PETA has even been invited in to check on the animals and make sure everything is being done correctly.  From 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. the animals are brought back into the barn to feed them, take care of them, etc.  During this time work is done in the savanna for maintenance with the animals in safety.DSC_0031 (1024x681)
  • Animals are bred to stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge or other zoos.  They don’t bring animals from the wild to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.  They are committed to doing what is right for the animals and giving them the best life.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge helps with conservation around the world through Disney’s Conservation Fund.  A portion of the proceeds from the Dine with an Animal Specialist goes towards helping animals through Disney’s Conservation Fund.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge offers Evening Safaris 7 days a week where guests are driven through savannas and then treated to a 5 course dinner at Jiko. Guests have to be staying at Kidani Village or Jambo House to be a part of the Evening Safari.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge offers a Night Safari that is 1 hour long and does have a dining component to it.  During this safari guest are given military grade night vision goggles to observe the animals at night.

Discover over 30 species of African wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, gazelles, kudu and flamingos. Identify each species with a Wildlife Field Guide (found in your Guest Room, with extras available from the Lobby Concierge), and learn more about African animals and ecosystems during fun programs led by Animal Specialists.

20150416_091243 (1024x576)Wilderness Explorers is a FREE program at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  Participants go around from station to station earning badges as they go.  We had the opportunity to learn about the program first hand on our press trip for the Monkey Kingdom movie that is now open in theaters.

Here are some things we learned:20150416_090046 (2) (1024x704)

  • The Wilderness Explorers Program has been around for 15 years but has grown in size from 6 stations to 31 badges to earn.
    20150416_091630 (576x1024)
  • The target audience for the Wilderness Explorers Program is families with kids from 7-10 years old but families with older or younger children will also enjoy it.  We participated in the program without children and had a blast collecting badges so even if you don’t have children with you, grab a Wilderness Explorer’s Handbook and earn some badges.
    Wilderness Explorer Program
  • The beauty of the Wilderness Explorers Program is that it DOES NOT involve technology.  It uses cast members who present information and engage participants as they explore the park going from station to station.
    20150416_092620 (576x1024)
  • Participants are given a Wilderness Explorer Handbook at one of 9 Troop Leader Stations.  They are located all over the park so you don’t have to be in the front of the park to get started.
  • Exploring is a life long adventure.  Most participants average about 12 badges a day and come back multiple times with their books to earn all the badges.
  • The Wilderness Explorers Program connects families to nature and each other.  It shows them parts of the park they might not have seen and gets parents involved in the learning, too.
  • There are 3 types of cast members who give out badges- Trooper Leaders (interns who are trained in education or science), Merchandise Cast Members (who share all about various authentic merchandise that is available in the park), and Cultural Cast Members (who share about their native countries).20150416_093425 (576x1024)
  • Troop Leaders and other representatives don’t just give out badges, they engage the participants, ask them questions about what they have learned, and teach them new things, too.
    20150416_093601 (576x1024)
  • Find cast members with orange satchels or look for signs with W/E on it to find badges to earn.
    P1240383
  • When you earn all the badges you earn a special Senior Wilderness Explorer badge.

20150416_101056 (576x1024)The Wilderness Explorers Program at Disney’s Animal Kingdom encourages families and children to experience the park in a whole new way! As Wilderness Explorers, Guests participate in a variety of activities, such as hiking the trails, digging for fossils, studying gorilla behaviors, listening to animal sounds, learning how veterinarians care for animals, and interacting with Cultural Cast Members representing different countries in Africa and Asia. Completing each activity allows you to earn a sticker badge in their very own Wilderness Explorers handbook, which can be picked up from any of the nine Troop Leader locations around the park. Explorers can earn up to 31 badges, but are encouraged to earn these badges in multiple visits, since exploring is a lifelong adventure! Completing all 31 badges gives guests the honorary title of Senior Wilderness Explorer. The program’s goal is to connect guests with animals, conservation and culture while spending time together as a family, during and even after their visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

As a family, it’s important to make time to hang out and bond with one another. This means you as parents spending time with your kids. Now, this can be challenging for both sides. Kids often don’t want to hang out with their parents. And it’s often difficult to find activities that will stimulate and entertain both you and your children.

But the good news is this blog post will look at a few things you can do together as a family. These are all fun, entertaining activities that the whole family will enjoy. Don’t forget how important it is to bond as a family. You need to spend time together and develop a close-knit family bond.

Movie Night

One of the easiest and most effective activities you can do together is to have a family movie night. You can even think about making this a themed night, by getting movie-themed snacks, for example. You should have plenty of choice for movies these days. Things like Netflix have opened up opportunities to watch movies as a family more easily. There’s even a specific kids section on Netflix offering an enormous range of children’s movies and TV shows. Get your kids to pick out the movie, and you can prepare some food and snacks. All sit down as a family and watch and laugh and be entertained together.

Talent Show

You might be the kind of family that prefers to do things a little more active. Or perhaps you just want a night away from the TV? Either way you could come up with a family talent show to keep you all occupied. This is bound to be fun and entertaining for everybody involved. You could even involve costumes of some kind that you’ve picked up online. You might visit http://justpretendkids.com/princess-dresses.html to pick out a princess dress for your daughter. She might want to do a sketch as Rapunzel or Sleeping Beauty. Then perhaps your son might want to play something on the guitar or tell some jokes. Make sure you get involved as parents too. Try to do something silly. There’s nothing better for the kids than being able to laugh at something silly their parents have done.

Board Games

A great way to spend time together being entertained as a family is to play board games. These are fun and exciting, and they can last quite a while. Board games often combine entertainment and education. So they’re helpful for your kids brain development. They are also great for teaching kids about being competitive and the importance of winning and losing. You should have a few board games around the house that everyone will enjoy. You might even try to do a team game with kids vs. parents for example. Of course, you’ll let the kids win!

Video Games

These days it’s often thought that children spend too much time playing video games. And this might be true. But in the right doses video games can be helpful for kids. They teach them coordination and how to follow a story. One of the best things about modern video games is that they can be multiplayer. As a family, you can all take part and take it in turns to play. This is even better with consoles like the Nintendo Wii that have games like Wii Sports. These are turn based sporting games that you can all play together as a family. This provides hours of fun and entertainment for the whole family.

From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

penguins of Madagascar family movie nightMy girls and I were selected to have a Penguins of Madagascar ice cream movie viewing party.  It was so much fun.  We were sent everything we needed for a fun, family night- plates, cups, napkins, themed rings, a penguin ice cube tray, the Penguins of Madagascar movie, 5 plush, talking characters, ceramic ice cream bowls, an ice cream scoop, a gift Target gift card to buy all of the ice cream supplies, and my favorite item- the Play and Freeze ice cream maker ball.

P1240148Aren’t they adorable?  The movie came with 2 walking figures, too!  So cute!
peanut butter ice cream The ice cream maker ball was so much fun to use.  You fill one side with rock salt and ice and the other side with your ice cream ingredients. making ice cream Close the ball and the fun begins!  Shake shake shake the ball.  Pass it around.  Roll it.  After 15 minutes open the ice cream end, scrap any ice cream from the sides, and close it up.  Turn it over and add some more ice and rock salt.  Shake again until the ice cream is firm.  P1240166You might have to repeat the scraping and adding ice a few times.  The time it takes to freeze depends on the liquid you use, the toppings, etc.  We used heavy whipping cream and it took about 30 minutes.
penguins of Madagascar ice cream partyHere’s the recipe we used.  If you don’t have the ice cream maker you could put ice and rock salt into a gallon ziplock baggie and the ice cream ingredient into a quart baggie.  Put the smaller baggie into the larger baggie and shake shake shake!

Peanut Butter Ice Cream

1 pint Cream or Milk (we used heavy whipping cream)
1 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
1/2 cup Sugar
2 chopped Peanut Butter Cups (we actually used 4 because you can never have too much peanut butter cup except I think that is why it took a little longer to freeze)

In addition to watching the adorable Penguins of Madagascar, we also did several other games and activities.  You can find lots of printable activities on my other Penguins of Madagascar printable activity post.  My girls had fun making paper airplanes, showing off their best karate stance, and my favorite, doing the penguin shake.

My girls and I were so excited to have the opportunity last week to be a part of a phone interview with actor, Tom McGrath who plays the penguin character, Skipper, on all of the Madagascar movies including the newest, Penguins of Madagascar.  It was a fun interview which started with Tim speaking as himself.  Each blogger or their child asked Tim a question.  Here’s a bit of what we found out:
Tom was not supposed to do the voice of Skipper.  He originally pitched the characters of the penguins to the studio and he did the voice temporarily until they could get other actors to play the actual characters.  Everyone got so used to Tom doing the voice of Skipper that it just kind of stuck and he became Skipper.  He based the voice on Robert Stacks and Charleston Heston and pulled from several 50’s tough guy style actors.  Tom’s favorite part about being Skipper is being able to get behind a microphone and be a goofball.  It’s all pretend and make-believe without a camera being on him so it’s lots of fun.  Playing Skipper was a great alter-ego for Tom because he used to be soft spoken but playing Skipper helped him open up his voice.  It also helped him be a better director by being on the other side of the microphone this time as the actor instead of the director and learning what it’s like on the other side.  His favorite Madagascar movie is the 3rd one because it was a lot of fun and had a great villain.  He liked that in the 3rd movie the penguins owned a circus and had a lot of money.  The goal with all the Madagascar movies is for both adults and children to enjoy the movies together and everyone would enjoy them.

tom mcgrath interviewOnce Time was finished asking questions, Skipper came on the phone and answered our questions.  My girls were all smiles during the whole conversation.  Skipper said being the leader means taking care of his team.  The leader needs to keep the group together.  He was asked how he maintain his cover with all the media publicity surrounding the Madagascar movies and he said he didn’t want to blow his cover to us or anyone else so he refused to answer that question.  LOL  He said there is a snow leopard uprising in Tibet so the penguins would be on it saving the world from some type of debacle!  He hopes to have a reunion with Alex, Melman, and the rest of the Madagascar crew.

How to Have a Disney Villaintine’s Day Party and Show Your DisneySide

Disclosure- I received a party box filled with items to host a DisneySide party from Mom Select and Disney.  All opinions are 100% my own.  Thanks Mom Select and Disney!

I was so excited to be selected to host a DisneySide party.  I have tween daughters so I was selected to host a Disney Villains themed party.  Since the parties were to be hosted in February I decided to make mine a Disney Villaintine’s Day party.  Once we had the theme, my girls and I went to work deciding on food, games, and crafts.  Disney Villaintine’s Day was such a fun theme to come up with things for!  Disney and MomSelect sent so many great things to host our party- cake mix, decorations, games, Twinings tea bags, HP photo paper, All detergent, and lots more!  Check out what received below:

We received so many great things to host our party but there are lots of other things you can add to make your Villaintine’s Day party a success.  Here’s everything we did for our party:

“Costumes”

I found some great Disney Villains headbands and jewelry on clearance for $2 each at Claire’s so I snatched it right up.  Each girl received a headband (Cruella or Ursula) and a matching bracelet and necklace.  costumes

Music

We had so much fun planning our party that we came up with more ideas than we even had time for!  Here’s what we came up with:
For background music I found this great, free website that had several great playlists of Disney Villains songs.  It was perfect.

 Favors

Each party guest received a favor bag with lots of goodies in it.  I made notebooks with our invitation design on the cover so the girls could remember the party.  There was also villain color nail polish, heart shaped candy, villain Jelly Belly jelly beans, heart rings and bracelets, a heart pencil, some printed games such as a villains word search and coloring page, Disney Villains lip gloss, and a favor box filled with candy.

disney villains favor box labelsHere are the Disney Villains labels I made for the favor boxes.  I also used them on upside down paper cups stacked in a pyramid that the girls were supposed to try to knock over with bean bags but we ran out of time.

Decorations

Most of the decorations I used were images I printed off of the internet via searching for Disney Villains or decorations that were sent in my party kit.  disney villains decorationsFor the magic mirror pictured below I bought an inexpensive silver charger plate at Michael’s (it was on sale for under $3 I believe).  I printed a picture of the magic mirror from Snow White and taped it to the center of the plate.  It looked great, only cost a few dollars, and since I only taped the picture on I can reuse it for something else.P1230802

P1230809Heart gems, battery operated tea light candles, and red & white heart balloon weights all from the dollar store made for some simple yet elegant centerpieces that didn’t take up too much room so the girls still had plenty of room to craft.

Photo Booth

I bought a plan wood frame at Michael’s and painted it black.  Then I sponged on purple paint.  On top of the purple paint I sponged on silver paint and finished it off with some purple glitter paint to create a photo booth for the girls to take pictures.  I hung a simple purple plastic tablecloth as the backdrop.  Easy peasy!

Food

Here are the signs I made for all the food I served.  Below you can click to download the signs to make them yourself.  P1230792 (2)

In addition to Scar’s Soda and The Wicked Queen’s Water, I served Poor Unfortunate Souls Punch.  To make the punch I put in two parts Green Hawaiian Punch to one part Sprite, added ice, and stirred.  When we served the punch we put a gummy worm in the bottom as the Poor Unfortunate Soul.

P1230816Plenty of munchies to snack on!

P1230846I tried to balance all the sweets with some healthy fruits, veggies, and hummus.

P1230849The Gaston’s Grilled Cheese should have been cheese sandwiches prepared on a panini press but they ended up just being cheese sandwiches because my husband (who was supposed to be making the food) injured his arm the morning of the party so we just cut the cheese sandwiches into heart shapes and served them that way.  No one seemed to mind!

P1230848The moms appreciated having healthy deli sandwiches for dinner in addition to the veggies and hummus.

P1230852

To make the tentacle hot dogs we just cut each hot dog lengthwise twice about 1/3 of the way up to create 4 “tentacles”.  We then boiled the hot dogs until they were cooked.  So easy and the kids loved them!

Crafts

P1230868I’ll admit I over planned for this party because I had so many ideas.  I had planned on having the girls make bookmarks but we ran out of time so I just had them take the printed bookmarks home so they could finish them later.  Simply punch a hole in the top, add some ribbon and beads, and viola!10420114_10152542256711770_688334783885228624_n (1)Download the Disney Villains bookmark template (no words, just the pictures) here.  And this is the original Disney Villains file I used to create it, to create my invites, and create the cover of the journals that I gave as favors.

2 cups

I bought these pretty plastic wine glasses at The Dollar Tree in packs of 2!  They were perfect for our Queen of Hearts glasses.  I gave the girls heart shaped gems and some glue and they each made a beautiful glass that they could use to put trinkets in.

The girls also painted wooden frames that I bought from Michael’s for $1.  Once the paint dried they put Villains stickers on them to decorate their frames.  The girls will then put pictures from the party in their frames once I have the pictures printed.  Such an easy craft but the girls really enjoyed it.disney villains frames

My favorite craft of all was the Mickey head dot art mugs.  The mugs were $2 each at Michael’s.  I had looked for mugs in the dollar store but they didn’t have enough plain white ones.  I ended up liking the ones from Michael’s better anyway.  I cut out Mickey Mouse heads on cardstock and I also had everyone’s initial cut out.  The girls taped down Mickey’s head on one side of their mug and “dotted” all around it with oil based Sharpie markers.  Be careful not to get paint under the template.  They did the same with their initials on the other side of their mugs.  sharpie marker mugsOnce the paint was dried and the girls brought their mugs home the mugs were put into a cold oven, brought to 350 degrees, and baked for 30 minutes.  Make sure you get the oil based Sharpies and not the water based ones!

Games

How Many Disney Villains Can You Name?
We started off with an ice breaker.  The girls were divided into 2 groups and they had to see how many Disney Villains they could name.
P1230814Don’t Say the Word Villain or the Name of Any Disney Villain
The next game we played until the party was over.  Similar to the clothespin game played at baby showers, the girls each had a red clothespin clipped to them.  They couldn’t say the word villain or the name of any of the Disney Villains.  If one of the girls caught another girl saying one of the forbidden words they had to call them out and take their clothespin.  The winner was named the ultimate villain and she won a bracelet maker that was part of the party kit.  The girls had so much fun with this game!P1230830Disney Trivia
There was a Disney Trivia game included in our party kit that we all enjoyed while the girls’ projects were drying.  I was surprised just how much Disney knowledge the girls had and it was a great way for the girls and the moms to learn about Disney facts that they didn’t know.  The trivia game really got all of us reminiscent of past trips to Disney World and excited to go back again soon.

P1230837We had planned on playing Disney Bingo (from the party box) and  a cup knocking over game but we ran out of time.  For the cup game I had purchased bean bags and put the faces of various Disney Villains on the cups.  The cups were to be stacked in a pyramid and each girl would have had a chance to knock over as many cups as she could with the bean bags.

We all had an amazing time and with all the ideas I had we’ll probably host another Disney Villains party for Halloween.  It’s such a fun theme.  Thank you so much Disney and MomSelect!

Happy National Reading Day!
#BookofLifeReading

book of life reading dayI’m a lucky mom.  Both of my girls love to read.  I think their love of reading started when they were both little and we’d snuggle in bed as I read them their favorite stories.  We were excited to learn about National Reading Day.  National Reading Day (January 23, 2015) encourages children all over the country to read.  In honor of National Reading Day and upcoming release of The Book of Life movie on Blu-ray and DVD we received backpacks with lots of The Book of Life school supplies.
book of life backpack2One of the first things my girls did with the school supply sets was to make lists of the books they would like to read this year.  It is a great way to set reading goals for the year and see how many books they have read by the end of the year.  I love the lists because I can look on their lists and use them as wish lists to know what books they’d like me to purchase or borrow from our local library.  What are some of your children’s favorite books?

In our kits we also received certificates to Pinhole Press to create our own The Book of Life themed family storybooks.  At Pinhole Press you can create high quality, personalized photo gifts such as memory games and storybooks.

My girls thought they were a little too old to make picture books of our family members but this would be such an amazing book for younger kids, especially to remember relatives that life far away.  Pinhole Press also has other great The Book of Life personalized photo gifts such as a matching game, notebook, and magnetic portrait sheet so my girls decided that they wanted to make some other personalize photo gifts for themselves instead.  They just love that they are The Book of Life themed as it is one of their favorite movies.  They can’t wait for it to come on Blu-ray and DVD on January 27th.
