My older daughter really wants to work with animals and help out so I’m looking into a place that she can volunteer with animals. My younger daughter is innovative and loves making new things. Her current passion is origami so I bought her some pretty paper and she’s having a great time getting creative and making things for friends and family. No matter their passion, kids just want to be supported and loved. 🙂

The day has finally arrived. Tomorrowland arrives on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA) October 13. Not only does it come with exclusive bonuses including deleted scenes, casting Tomorrowland, and more, but it also includes something very exciting- Brad Bird Production Diaries! The director, Brad Bird filmed the unique vantage point for the Director Diaries with a steady cam. How cool is that? Talk about behind the scenes! Brad Bird is not only a director but he’s also a writer and producer. He directed the worldwide hit “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” the fourth installment of the Tom Cruise-starring franchise. He won Oscars® for writing and directing the “Ratatouille” and “The Incredibles.” His feature directorial debut was the critically acclaimed 1999 animated feature “The Iron Giant,” which won the International Animated Film Society’s Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Theatrical Feature. So yeah, he’s crazy talented. It was such an honor to meet and chat with Mr. Bird on my recent trip to Los Angeles. Here are just a few of the things I learned.

Brad started drawing at the young age of three. His very first drawings were sequential.  They were meant to be viewed in a certain order.  So he was trying to make movies from the very beginning.  He would tell the story while he would show these pictures. (How cute!) Then when he saw Jungle Book, something snapped in him, and he realized that it was somebody’s job to figure out how a stuffy panther would move.

It wasn’t just any animal.  It was a cat.  It wasn’t just any cat, it was a panther.  It wasn’t just any panther, it was a stuffy panther, and somebody got paid to sit down and imagine that.  And suddenly, the adult world which seemed kind of dull and boring to me seemed suddenly very exciting to me, and that that was somebody’s job.  And I started to realize that there are a lot of cool jobs in the world.

We asked Brad what he would like audiences to take away from Tomorrowland and he said he doesn’t want to make it sound like broccoli, like something that is good for you. But it will provide them with nutrition later.  He wanted to convey that first and foremost, they tried to make an entertaining movie that was a good ride.  (I think they succeeded at that, don’t you?) He also stressed the message of the movie:

The future is not set. It’s in our hands; it’s fluid; it’s made every day by the actions of everyone, and that, um, don’t resign yourself to the negative future; help build another one.

What an amazing and true message! It is such a good reminder for everyone that we all have the power to make our own future. Another answer that Brad gave us echoed the same sentiment. We asked him about the future of his career and he said he would never want his career to be predictable. He wants to do all different types of movies. As a fan of Brad Bird’s work, I am excited to see what the future holds for his work and can’t wait to see what’s next.

P1250885

Last week when we were in Los Angeles we had the opportunity to interview Raffey Cassidy and Thomas Robinson, the child stars of Tomorrowland. I’ve interviewed other child stars before and as always I was so impressed by how well spoken Raffey and Thomas were.  They were both mature and a pleasure to talk with. I could have listened to Raffey talk with her accent all day!
Here are a few things we learned:

Thomas started acting when his brother’s acting coach thought he’d be perfect for an up coming role. He landed the role and it just snowballed from there as he puts it.  Raffey said it wasn’t really one specific day that she thought, “Oh I want to be an actor.”  Kind of like Thomas (Robinson) she got one part and then from then on she just wanted  to “carry on ‘cause I was having so much fun doing it”.

For Tomorrowland, Raffey learned gymnastics and marshal arts to do some of her own stunts.  To train for the jet pack flying scenes in the movie Thomas trained on a flying trapeze and then indoor skydiving.  Sounds like a lot of fun to me! He also had athletic development training to be able to keep up with the stunts he needed to perform in the movie.

The script was HIGHLY guarded and protected. When Thomas went in to read the script for his audition he had to be locked in a room with the script and then once he finish reading they locked the script in a safe in a locked room.  Talk about top secret!

In her spare time Raffey Cassidy likes to do special effects make-up and Thomas Robinson like to skateboard and cook.  He especially likes to bake things like lemon bars and different kinds of sweets.

We asked Raffey and Thomas what it was like to work with George Clooney and Raffey said, “He’s a very professional man, but at the same time he keeps the set very relaxed.”  Thomas added that Hugh Laurie was nice as well.

When asked what advice they would give to kids their own age that wanted to act, Raffey said to never give up and always try harder.  Thomas added that people are going to say NO a lot.  You’re not going to get every audition you go out for.  There’s so many people going out for the role.  Don’t give up and keep trying because if you’re good at what you do and you just be yourself, don’t take no for an answer, and keep going and something will happen.  Great advice for sure!

Don’t we all look cute?!?!

WALT DISNEY STUDIOS AND DISNEY PARKS TEAM UP TO SHOWCASE EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK OF DISNEY’S “TOMORROWLAND” MOVIE AND SPECIAL EXHIBIT FOR PARK GUESTS AT DISNEYLAND RESORT AND WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT

tomorrowland212-Minute Sneak Peek Includes Exciting, Never-Seen-Before Footage- Exhibit Features the Making of “Tomorrowland” with Props, Concept Artwork, Photos from Filming, and Images from the Disney Archives

Burbank, Calif. (April 10, 2015) –Walt Disney Studios announced today an unprecedented collaboration between the Studio, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort to offer park guests a 12-minute sneak peek of Disney’s upcoming thrilling, mystery-adventure film, “Tomorrowland,” opening in U.S. theaters on May 22. Guests will also enjoy an impressive exhibit that features the making of the movie with props, concept artwork and photos from the filming of the movie plus exclusive images from the Disney Archives. The sneak peek and exhibit will open April 17 in Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park and on April 18 in Future World at Epcot and will be available to the public for a limited time.

The must-see event marks the first time that a sneak peek has been offered at Epcot in Walt Disney World and the first time Walt Disney Studios has teamed up with both parks to showcase an upcoming Disney film with footage and an in-depth look at the making of the film. Sure to spark the imagination and curiosity of all, the special exhibit details the process of bringing director Brad Bird’s vision to life and will show how filmmakers created the world of Tomorrowland, along with archival images of iconic Disneyland attractions featured in the movie.

In the movie, the premise that the futuristic city of Tomorrowland could actually exist pays homage to Walt Disney’s vision for both Tomorrowland at Disneyland Resort and Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort where ever-evolving technologies are showcased along with ideas to make the world a better place for all.

Commenting on the exclusive “Tomorrowland” sneak peek event, Brad Bird, the film’s two-time Oscar® winning director, says, “We are excited that park guests will be the first to get an extended look at ‘Tomorrowland’ in the part of Disneyland that inspired the film. Tomorrowland is the one section of the park that Walt Disney himself designed to be tied inexorably to constant change. After all, the future is always in motion, continually shifting as humankind’s choices of the present remake the world ahead of us. ‘Tomorrowland’ is a state of mind. My hope is that the exhibit will convey some of the magic that went into bringing this land… and this movie, to life.”

“Tomorrowland,” a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney, tells the story of former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, who are bound by a shared destiny and embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, “Tomorrowland” promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.

The film also stars Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson

“Tomorrowland” is produced by Damon Lindelof, Brad Bird and Jeffrey Chernov and directed by Brad Bird, with John Walker, Bernard Bellew, Jeff Jensen and Brigham Taylor serving as executive producers.
