Our doctors and emergency rooms are so overrun that we’re often told to only seek medical care when it’s urgent. For instance, if you’re suffering from a cold but could manage with a few painkillers and some rest, going to your doctor may be a waste of time. But, how do we know what warrants a visit to our doctors and what doesn’t? Here are a few signs that you need to see your doctor.

Fainting

If you’ve fainted or have felt light-headed for a long period of time, it may be an indication of something more serious. It’s especially important if your symptoms have got progressively worse. For example, you’ve been suffering from a cold but now have a raised temperature and you’ve started fainting. You may want to look up amyloidosis symptoms. You should ask to see your doctor immediately or go to A&E if your doctor isn’t available.

Persistent Vomiting

When a person is sick it’s usually because bacteria has been introduced into the body and it needs to come out. Once the person has been sick, they can usually begin to re-introduce liquids, salt and sugar back into the system. However, there are times when sickness is more persistent and more severe. If you are vomiting and doesn’t seem to be stopping, you need to seek medical care straight away.

A Cough

We all get coughs from time to time, usually with Winter colds. However, coughs do tend to go away within ten days and most resolve themselves, if not with a dosage of cough medicine. If your cough is persistent and stays for longer than ten days, you may need to seek advice. This is especially important if your cough stops you from breathing properly. Here are some home remedies you can try to ease your cough.

Chest Pain

Severe chest pain can be an indication of many different things. Chest pain can be the starting symptom for more serious conditions, like a heart problem or pneumonia. If you’ve been coughing for a while, chest pain can just be a side effect, but if it persists or causes severe pain, it’s best to get it checked. Monitor the way you’re breathing while in pain. If your chest causes your breathing to become erratic, you’ll need to see someone straight away.

High Temperature

A high temperature is often part and parcel of being ill. Once the illness has passed, your temperature will usually return to normal. However, if your temperature remains high for a prolonged period of time, you’ll need to call the emergency services. Try to bring your temperature down by soaking a hand towel in cold water and placing it on your forehead.

Worsening Symptoms

Our bodies are good at self-healing. Most illnesses will pass quickly with some TLC. If your symptoms don’t pass in a short amount of time and they get worse as time passes, it’s time to get some help from a professional. You may only need some antibiotics, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Have Fun With The Family In The Great Outdoors

forest-floor-1031143_960_720Image

If you haven’t prepared anything this summer because times are tough and you can’t afford to splash out on cash this year – don’t beat yourself up about it. There are tons of different things that you can do as a family that’s fun, but doesn’t empty out your pockets.

If you’re one that likes adventures, then what’s nicer than exploring the forest with your children? Discover the outdoors and use this as a bonding experience as well as a learning one.

If you’ve never done anything like this before, then you don’t want to get too over ambitious by going any further than you need to. So do some planning beforehand and pick a nice spot that’s safe to go to, and isn’t too far out.

Wear clothes that you don’t mind you and your kids getting dirty. This is your chance to live a little on the wild side, so don’t worry about scuffing your shoes or staining your pants – it’s time to forget about things like that for a while. Let your kids have a run around and feel totally free for a moment or two.

Respect the forest

Before you leave, you should sit down with your family and have a talk about how to be respectful of the area, as well as the creatures that live there. Tell your children that the forest is home to so many other animals, and it’s important to keep it clean and safe for them so that they can live a happy life too.

Activities to do in the forest

If just going for a stroll isn’t enough for your kids (or you for that matter,) then come up with some fun activities that you can all do together as a family.

If you’re not too sure about what you can do, here are some ideas.

Make some art

Bring some sketchbooks and an array of different colored pencils. Have a sit down with everyone and pick out something you each like looking at. This could be a wild flower, an interesting looking leaf or even a pretty butterfly (if it sits still for long enough!)

You can then use the drawing as a memory of your family day out, and hang them in your kid’s bedrooms, or even use them as a card to give to someone.

Take pictures

Get your camera out and start taking photos. If you don’t want to worry about damaging your expensive goods – get some disposable cameras for the day. Because they’re so cheap, everyone could have a camera each to do with what they wish. This a very cool idea as children tend to have a completely different perspective on things, and they may just take some incredible looking photos of things that maybe you never even thought of. It’s exciting because you don’t know what you’re getting until the pictures are printed out!

A picnic

Now, who doesn’t love a good old picnic? And you don’t need much. Get a few blankets (depending on how many of you there is!) And bring some ready made sandwiches, salads and some naughty snacks of course.

After you’ve been walking for a while, find a nice looking tree to sit under, or if there’s water, like a stream or a small lake, cop a squat there and enjoy sharing food with one another under the sun.

Stop, listen and take it in

It’s a wonderful idea to take a moment to really appreciate where you are, so once in awhile, tell everyone to stop what they’re doing, stop talking and just listen. What can you all hear?

Ask your children to tell you what kind of noises there are, and what do they think is making them.

Keep your eyes open

Tell your children to be alert at all times. Examine the floor and the pretty plants, and the big tall trees. Touch them; feel the different textures and look at any wildlife that may be lurking around. See if you can spot buds that are sprouting through the ground, getting ready to blossom into something beautiful.

Another way you can encourage this is by playing a game of ‘I Spy.’

Bird watching

Some kids may not see the ‘fun’ side of this, so it’s your job to make it something a lot more exciting than it’s expected to be. Instead of using the ‘boring’ traditional bird book – print out some of your own pictures off the web and take them out with you. You can also make a checklist with the different breeds on. Then you can make your day out a bird catching quest, where you trek through the forest trying to locate the birds in your photos, crossing them off one by one as you do.

Collect the trash

A wonderful thing that you can do is come equipped with some trash bags and rubber gloves. Sure, the mess wasn’t made by you, but showing your children that you care about the environment and that you are willing to do some of the dirtier jobs in order to make it flourish again, is a very lovely message to put out there. And you could be saving lives for the furry friends that live in the forest too. You would be surprised about how many animals actually get hurt and killed because of litter lying around that they end up getting stuck in and aren’t able to escape.

Go and collect firewood

It may only be the early days of summer, but logs need time to dry out properly, so they are suitable for burning when the winter swings round. So doing this in advance is a great way to prepare for the colder months. Have a look online for the best log splitter for homeowners. You will then be able to cut the wood yourself with ease, and show your kids what it means to be sustainable and use what you have, without wasting what you don’t need.

Play games

Make sure that everyone is having fun and the kids aren’t getting bored. Children have a short attention span at times, and so you will want to keep their energy up and make it an awesome day out for them. If this means taking five minutes out to play tag, or have the best game of hide and seek ever – so be it. (Yes, parents, you can absolutely peek through your fingers when your children go off to hide – we wouldn’t expect otherwise!)

Design a scavenger hunt

Pack some things in your bag and then use them to hide around an area within the forest. Make a list of what you have hidden, and then your kids can cross them off as they go.

If you didn’t want to have to pack more than you needed though, you could use what’s already around you. Have a look for some interesting twigs and rocks, show your kids and let them inspect them for a couple of minutes, and then go and hide them! Even if you aren’t able to remember exactly what you hid, it’ll be a funny game to play.

Do some homework

If you’re feeling extra sneaky, you can even incorporate some of those dreaded maths equations and tricky words to spell along your adventure. If you packed some sweets, these could be given out if the answer is answered correctly. So don’t tell anyone what you’re doing, just shout out a word or a sum and see what happens. If someone gives you the response you were looking – give them some candy.

You could even go as far as coming up with a silly song to help them remember the correct answers.

Walking is great exercise

Not only is walking together and discovering an area a lovely thing to do as a family. But the benefits it has on your health are too good to miss out on.

Walking gets the heart pumping and the blood flowing, so you are essentially improving your circulation while keeping fit. But it isn’t just a physical thing either – getting out in the fresh air and going for a walk can clear the mind and relax any tension you may have. It also releases endorphins within your brain that make you feel good.  And it works exactly the same for your children too. They may not be aware of certain things how you would be, but their bodies will be working the same way.

Make it a family tradition

If this goes down well, and your children really enjoy the day out – make it into a regular thing – a tradition even! Things like this stay with a child forever, and one day when they are older, and they have their own family, they may just carry that tradition on. Family is such an important thing and should be cherished and nurtured, so being able to create memories like this from an early age can have some really positive impacts on your little one’s lives.

Lots of parents want to help their children at school however they can. For most, that means encouraging them to do their homework and stepping in whenever they need any help with it. Keeping in contact with the child’s teacher can also help parents to keep in touch with their child’s education and iron out any issues that may arise.

But do you want to do even more to help your child at school? Well, you will be happy to hear that there is something you could do that would not only help your own child but also help the other pupils as well as some teachers! You just need to volunteer!

Not sure how you can volunteer at your local school? Here are some opens that most schools try to get parent volunteers to fill.

pexels-photo-207691Image – Pexels

Lunchtime Supervisors

Everyone needs a break, even teachers! Because of this, most schools try to get volunteers to help supervise the children at lunch times and other break times. Then the teachers can grab some lunch and relax for an hour before they have to start afternoon lessons. It is incredibly easy to be a lunchtime supervisor, all you really need to do is watch the children while they are playing in the playground. You may also be required to organize the children before they go into the canteen for their lunch. If any child has an accident, you will need to be on hand to help them however necessary. Because of this, you may be required to take CPR classes and other first-aid training. Don’t worry about the cost of this, the school should cover all expenses. Once you are trained in health and safety, you should also be able to help out in a few other different parts of the school day, such as sports lessons.

Listen To Children Read

Many schools now have time set aside in the day for children to read to themselves. For young children, who are still learning to read, this time is often spent reading out loud to a teacher or teaching assistant. However, there are currently schools that are experiencing staff shortages. As a result, these schools need to find volunteers who will sit and listen to children read during these lessons. If your school is looking for volunteers, why not think about joining? It is very easy to carry out these types of roles as you just need to listen to children and help them with any pronunciation or reading issues.

Sports Day Supervisors

Even though sports day occurs just once a year, it can often be a struggle for schools to find suitable volunteers to help supervise children. That’s often because most parents work full-time jobs and can’t spare the time to help out. However, if you can, you will find that it is a very rewarding experience. You might be asked to help set up events before the day itself or to help run the events and activities on the actual day. If you do help out on the day, you will be expected to organize the kids and ensure that everything runs smoothly without any accidents!

pexels-photo-301943Image – Pexels

Field Trip Supervisors

Most schools also look for volunteer supervisors when they take the kids on field trips. If you are lucky, you might be able to go on international trips with the school! While you are on a field trip, you will probably be responsible for one small group of pupils. You will need to ensure that they are safe at all times and that they carry out any tasks and small assignments that they need to do during the trip. You will also need to make sure that no one goes missing, and that everyone turns up for transport on time. As the pupils on the field trip are representing the entire school in a different community, they will need to be ambassadors for the school. And that means you should ensure that they are well-behaved and polite at all times, as any poorly behaved pupils will give off a bad impression of the school. If you travel on an international school trip, then you might have to stay in accommodation with some pupils so that they are supervised at all times.

As you can see, there are a lot of different things you can help your kid’s school out with. Not only are they very rewardable, but you might also find them enjoyable as well! There will also be other ways you can volunteer at a school – you can always get in touch and ask them what types of volunteers they are currently looking for.

Choosing a High-Efficiency Toilet for Sustainability and Water Saving

In 1980, Thomas Crapper’s plumbing company started producing flush toilet on a large scale. However, at that time many improvements on the toilet were made and this helps to meet the standards of sanitary waste disposal. Today toilet is one of the common uses of water in homes.

Dual Flush Toilets

In 1980 the dual flush toilet was developed in Australia by Bruce Thompson. This toilet consists of two push buttons at the top, one for half flush (liquid waste products) while the other is for full flush (solid waste products). This helps to save about 67% of water consumption in a household.

However, the half flush requires little water to operate and also lacks the siphoning power of the full flush toilet. The half flush usually uses up 0 .8 gallons of water while the full flush uses 1 .6 gallons of water. As a result of this, it is the most efficient way of minimizing water usage.

The dual system employs the pressure of water to get rid of the waste products, compared to the standard systems where the pressure of water with pneumatic air is used to get rid of waste products as shown in the diagram below. For this reason, the dual flush toilet uses little water. This method is comparatively cheaper and will cost as low as $29 to $30. Therefore, it will save the household a lot of money in the long term. For example, a household of two to five members can save about thirteen gallons of water in a day. The manufacturers of dual flush toilets claim that these kinds of toilets will last for a long period of time provided you use it properly.

dual flush toiletFig 1: Dual flush toilet

High-Efficiency Toilets

Generally, if you are operating at home or offices, installing high-efficiency toilets is necessary. This method helps to spend less water for flushing compare to the normal toilets, because it uses a little amount of water. This is the best method you need to watch out for each time you are shopping so as get a better result. As we all known, high-efficiency toilets help to uses just about 1.26 gallons for every single flush. This method saves about 20% over normal toilets.

Other Features to Consider For High-Efficiency Toilets

Super-charged edge wash: When flushing, water flows through the spaces in the edge of the toilet. The edge gets rid of the waste and cleaning action is common with the high-efficiency toilets.

An enlarged water spot: The presence of surface water helps to get rid of the solids and paper that stick to the sides of the bowl. As a result of this about 8 to 9-inch water spot is needed.

Larger trap way outlet size: The solid waste passageway must be two inches wide, usually higher efficiency toilets contain a wider opening so as to prevent blockage.

Support Pressure: Most household toilets rely on gravity; high-efficiency pressure models consist of a canister in the toilet tank which stores water and increases the pressure as water goes into the toilet. When flushing, the pressure forces water for a powerful flush action.

Bigger flush valve or flapper opening: The wider the opening of the flush valve located along the bowl and the tank the better. However, having a four-inch opening is 200% faster than the three-inch. While having a three-inch opening is 80% faster than the standard two-inch.

Shopping guide: whenever you want to buy a high-efficiency toilet, make sure you are aware of the features about modern toilet technology. You must be able to find a variety of products with the label of Water Sense that will also have some features illustrated here to meet your desires. A trained plumber can also help you choose the best variety that will work with your existing drains.

Toilet producers are manufacturing dual flush toilets and high-efficiency toilets for sale to the market. The American Standard, Kohler, Toto, Eljer and Gerber all offer the high-efficiency toilet option.

But, it is more reasonable in this unstable weather condition, financial turbulence and high costs of services like water waste disposal, to think about ways to reduce the water usage. High efficiency toilets are usually low and refund may be available in many different cases. Also, the effectiveness makes it a very bargain to install a high efficiency toilet in the bathroom.

In conclusion, if you did not want to change your toilets, you can consider changing one of your toilets in your house and observe how it will look like. You will definitely be pleased with the efficiency of the toilet.

3 Ways To Help Someone Through A Tough Time

Perhaps you know somebody who has suffered a huge loss in their life, and you want to help them in anyway you can. Going through a tough time isn’t something you want to do alone – try these 4 ways to help somebody you care about come through the other side:

Listen To Them
When somebody is going through a tough time, they usually like to talk about it. This might be gibberish nonsense in between sobs, or it could be full on angry rants. Whatever they want to do, let them get it out. Having somebody to listen really helps. You don’t even need to offer advice or a solution. Just listen and nod. Let them know you understand.

Help Them To Take Their Mind Off Things
Although listening to them talk about their issues is great, you don’t want them to wallow in their sorrow too much. You want them to think about other things, and live their life in spite of what’s going on. Help them to take their mind off things. Maybe go out for lunch somewhere brand new, or go and relax somewhere peaceful.

Understand What They’re Going Through
Everybody deals with things differently. Two people could go through the exact same situation and deal with it differently. The key is to understand the different reactions and be prepared. If you don’t feel like you can do this alone, getting a counselor for this person could be a way to help them move forward. You can look at the infographic below if you need more advice on helping somebody to handle traumatic grief.

Puppy-Proofing A House In 4 Simple Steps

Are you thinking about buying a new puppy? Congratulations! There is nothing like adding a new addition to the family, especially when it is furry and adorable. Still, there are a few bases to cover before you can be sure that the transition will be a smooth one. In simpler terms, it’s essential to puppy-proof the house for your sake as well as the dogs. For anyone that doesn’t know where to start, the following four tips will help.

Cover The Danger Points

The puppy’s safety is paramount when it moves into a new home. The problem is that dogs and humans have a different threshold for risk. For example, a fire which is closed-off won’t be an issue for you because you know to take precautions. Dogs don’t have any idea what will happen, and they don’t care. They will touch it and burn themselves if there isn’t anything in the way. Doors are windows should also come under consideration. You can’t just let your puppy out the house to wander around alone. But, an open door is too big a temptation for a young dog to turn down. So, make sure they’re closed and locked.

Hide Your Valuables

Until they have training, the dog might lash out by ripping the house to pieces. Everyone has seen pictures of the carnage, so don’t be fooled by their innocence. Sadly, there isn’t much you can do other than hope they keep their teeth to themselves while you’re not on watch. Oh, and move anything that you class as valuable. Shoes might be replaceable, as might bags and homework, but it’s still a lot of hassle. The sensible thing to do is to keep the dog and your belongings apart for the time being.

Get It A House

A house within a house: isn’t that a bit much? No, it isn’t over the top at all because it helps the puppy feel at home. Dogs don’t like wide, open spaces as they prefer to feel cozy and relaxed. So, a big house with nobody home is often a recipe for disaster. A small inside kennel that they can call their own is an excellent solution as long as you choose wisely. And, you can as long as you have a dog house guide that you can trust. Once you have one that is large enough, load it with toys and soft blankets and the dog might never leave!

Be Alert

In truth, there is only so much one person can do at a time. Puppies are industrious characters so they might get into trouble from time to time. All you can do is accept that it will happen, and try to minimize the damage at every turn. Owners with a keen sense of eyesight should be able to stop a dog from doing something stupid before it happens. A tip: keep the doors to the house closed if you think there’s going to be a problem. Or, call it into the room with you so that you know where it is at all times.

Could You Manage If These Everyday Essentials Broke?

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Do you rely on your tech too much? As capable as we are, many of us would struggle to get by if some of our much-used appliances and gadgets were to break. There are a few items we simply couldn’t do much with if they broke down, but fortunately, some can be fixed with a little DIY ingenuity.

Hearing Aids

If the sound of the world suddenly cut out, life can get a little lonely. Hearing aids bring conversations, everyday sounds, and music back to us when we start to lose our hearing. If you lead a busy life at home and work, a broken hearing aid can make things more than a little challenging for you. Don’t panic. It’s not impossible to repair your hearing aids should they fail. You can do a few vital checks yourself. Sometimes it’s something as simple as the volume turned down too far. You might have some ear wax that you can resolve yourself. If you’re still struggling, speak to your audiologist or ask the manufacturer direct.

ache-adult-depression-expression-41253Thanks to Pexels.com for this photo

Air Conditioning

It’s hotting up outside, and the air con just won’t come on. There are several checks you can make before you call out the HVAC guys. Blockages are a very common cause of systems refusing to start. You might have a lit warning light to indicate that. Even if you haven’t, start inside with the filters closest to your unit. If they’re mucky, take them out, clean them and let them air before putting them back. Outside, check there is no debris in the unit. Leaves and even the odd stone can end up in there, blocking the fan or filters.

Glasses

Glasses are made of three pieces. Two arms are attached to the glass frame with tiny little mini screws. These are so small that you need a special technician’s screwdriver to loosen or tighten them. Or, you might simply have a very busy day and a screw loose! Glasses tend to fall apart at the most inconvenient times. You might not be able to drive or to work without them. Make sure you have a set of those screwdrivers and a spare couple of screws! Of course, many optician stores will make that kind of repair for free or a small charge too.

pexels-photo-39716Thanks to Pexels for this photo

Smartphone

Many of us tend to have our entire lives on our phones. Contact numbers, passwords, and account details might all be there. Batteries can quickly and easily become very destructive to your phone. If you catch it in time, you can usually just buy another battery, install it, and everything is OK. Of course, if your screen becomes damaged, or the phone itself is corroded, you might lose anything that wasn’t stored in the cloud or on your PC. Let your network provider know. Chances are they can replace the handset next day. In the meantime, backup what you can.
