AHOY MATEYS!

Bluefoot Pirate AdventuresThere are many hidden treasures in South Florida and we recently discovered one. Last weekend my family and I went on a Bluefoot Pirate Family Adventures children’s pirate cruise around the Intercoastal in Fort Lauderdale. When you first pull up to the dock the first thing you’ll notice is the big black and yellow ship flying a pirate flag. Upon arriving at the dock children can get their face painted and don pirate gear. The face painting is included in the price of the cruise and children can borrow a pirate themed vest to wear for the duration of the cruise. Want to get even more dressed for the part of pirate? For $7.50 you can purchase a Junior Pirate Pack which includes a plastic sword, eye patch, and pink or black bandana. They also have other goodies for sale.20160723_145508 My girls are almost 11 and 13 which, in my opinion is a little past the target age range for this adventure so they were too embarrassed to get their faces painted and dress up like pirates. TWEENS! I think the experience is perfect for pirates 10 and under. My girls might not have wanted to become pirates but that didn’t stop my husband form joining in the fun and getting his face painted.
20160723_15061120160723_150651

Once we got on the ship the 1st Mate taught the little pirates the parts of the ship and some pirate speak as well as an enchanting tale of stole treasure. Meanwhile the adults got comfortable in the back of the ship while enjoying the cool breezes and the tales told by the captain of the history of many of the gorgeous houses that are passed along the voyage. It was very cloudy when we sailed so I didn’t need to put sunscreen on my girls but the kids do sit in the front of the ship where it is uncovered so make sure to bring sunscreen with you. If you get thirsty they do have water available for sale so bring a little cash with you.

My girls felt that they were too old to participate in all the pirate adventure but they both enjoyed cruising down the Intercoastal and looking at the beautiful houses and other boats along the way. I wish I had taken them on this adventure when they were younger. I know they would have really enjoyed it as much as all the young kids who were on our cruise did.

The expressions on the little faces when the “villain” Barnacle Bill sailed past us were priceless. They all got into character and were so excited to shoot the water cannons at Barnacle Bill to defeat him and get the treasure. My younger daughter stopped being a “too old tween” for a moment and had fun shooting the water cannon, too. 😉

The 1st Mate gives a thumbs up as Barnacle Bill surrenders to the little pirates.20160723_153619Once the special key is discovered, the treasure chest is opened to reveal the booty! Each child gets a baggie of booty (plastic coins and gems) to take home with them and a certificate to remember their adventure.
20160723_161125

Even with my girls thinking they were too old, in the end they both admitted to having fun and we all enjoyed the cruise. As an added bonus when you go on the Bluefoot Pirate Adventure you can park by the Bahia Mar hotel for just $5 for the whole day. We took advantage of this and brought our beach gear with us. When we got off the pirate ship we were able to walk across the street and enjoy Ft. Lauderdale beach!

DIY lovers know how important it is to recycle and reuse materials, and pallets are one of those that are so versatile and resilient.

Pallets are easy to get hold of, with piles of them at most scrap and reclamation yard. They are cheap but strong, with the wood lasting years with the right care and treatment. Be careful of splinters, and watch out for nails and staples in them.

Furniture made from pallets have an industrial and rustic feel, adding style to any home. There are stunning pallet furniture for sale online, and a few tutorials below to inspire you.

Raised vegetable beds are so easy to make, cut down your weeding time, and make gardening a lot more accessible.

You will need:

Wooden pallets

Scissors

Weed/garden fabric

Electric drill and screws

Staple gun and staples

Top soil

Plants ready for planting

Place your pallets into where you want them and make sure they line up correctly. Use the drill and screws to fix these into place. If the wood of your pallets are thick you may need to fit these with brackets instead. When they are all secure, line with the garden fabric and attached with the staple gun. Fill with top soil and add fertiliser and compost if needed. With the soil holding the fabric down, you can trim any excess from the edges. Then you’re ready to plant any plants and seeds you’d like. Make sure you water thoroughly to start off with, as the soil will be quite dry.

Pallets can also be used to make quirky shelving and display pieces in the home.

You will need:

Wooden pallets

Sandpaper

Shelf brackets

Nails

A spirit level

Use a nail punch and hammer to remove all the nails and tacks from the pallets.Take your time sanding the dismantled wood down, removing all splinters and jagged edges. Measure up the space and cut the pieces down to the lengths you require. You may need to nail boards together to get the desired width for your shelves. Now these are all prepared and attached, support to the wall with the brackets. Make sure you use the spirit level to ensure it is fitted straight.

Coffee tables are also easily made from pallets, adding an interesting feature to your living room. These can be stained or painted to match your color scheme, with more pallets added for a larger piece.

You will need:

Wooden pallets

Sandpaper

Stain/paint

Table wheels

Now use your chosen paint or dye to match the new piece to the rest of your room. Give paint a couple of coats and allow to to dry completely outside. Attach the roller wheels to each corner of the pallet, using the attachments they come with. Finish off with a decorative pieces and coasters for a functional item fit for any home!

5 Ways to Improve Your Home Entertainment Options

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we can all enjoy incredible entertainment in our homes. Many people do what they can to recreate the cinema experience in their own living rooms. But what are the best ways to improving your viewing experience and your entertainment options? Here are five options to consider carefully.

  1. Get Your TV Settings Right

There are so many people who have never even thought about the settings on their TV. But if you really want to improve your entertainment options, you need to understand them all. There are so many different controls that can enhance the viewing experience when you are watching different things. For example, if you are watching fast-paced sports, you need to turn on the motion smoothing system. But when you watch a movie, it needs to be off. Dig out your manual and learn about all the settings.

power-button-on-tv-remotePhoto Source

  1. Control the Light and Shade

The amount of light and shade in the room matters to anyone who really cares about their viewing experience. Watching a great TV show or the latest movie can really be ruined when there is too much daylight reflecting off the screen. Improve how you watch these things by controlling the external and internal lights. You can improve the curtains you use, position the TV correctly and use a dimmer switch in the room. All of these things will make a difference.

  1. Project Movies

Watching movies on your TV is fine, but it’s not perfect. If you ask me, movies are made to be projected. That’s how it works when you head to the multiplex. So, why not do it the same way in your home? All you need is a projector screen and a digital projector. These are affordable and easily available these days, so there is no need to break the banks. And then you can see the movies in its intended, larger than life form. The image will be bigger, and it will feel like it’s supposed to.

Projection-screen-home2Image Source

  1. Invest in a Custom TV Pack

It’s not all about movies though. The TV pack you have will make a big difference too. Sure, you can purchase a deal that gives you a certain range of channels, but this doesn’t give you much control. At the Verizon Fios site, however, you can choose a custom channel pack. This allows you to get rid of the channels that you don’t want to pay for and choose the ones that you really want to watch. It makes perfect sense when you’re looking for value and control.

  1. Get a Subwoofer

There are some frequencies that your ordinary speakers just won’t be able to handle. If you want to make sure that you get clear, concise low bass frequencies, you need a subwoofer. This will massively improve the quality of the audio you get from your home entertainment setup. And it will make watching loud movies much better. It’s worth making the change for that reason alone.

Tips And Tricks To Make Your Home Super Secure

Security is the number one priority of any home. If you don’t feel 100% secure in your own home, you could find that your stress levels increase and you stay awake worrying all night. Thankfully, there are a number of ways you can easily increase the security of your property. Here are some useful tips and tricks to make your home a lot securer.

cctv-1144371_640www.pixabay.com

Install New Doors

Many old doors aren’t as secure as you may think. Especially wooden doors. These can be easily kicked in by an intruder. If you have had the same doors in your home for a few years, it could be worth upgrading to newer ones. These modern doors will have much more effective lock systems as well. You should also think about installing security screens. To find out more about these, take a look at sites like security screens by rockingham glass.

Get Some CCTV

The best way to prevent a burglary is to deter any potential intruders. The best way to do this is to install some CCTV cameras onto the outside of your property. Once a burglar notices the cameras, he will be put off from trying to enter your home. If he still does break in, you will, hopefully, have caught his face on camera. This should be given to the police as evidence. CCTV can be expensive, but it is possible to buy fake cameras at low prices. Burglars won’t be able to tell they don’t work, so will still be deterred from entering your home.

Get A Dog

Dogs are another great way to deter burglars. You should get a breed of dog that will bark if it hears anyone walking around your property. As soon as the burglar hears the barking, they will run away. If you have the space, leave your dog outside in a kennel so that it is visible to anyone passing your home. If you don’t have the space for a dog, you just need to buy some ‘beware of the dog’ signs. If you stick these on your front garden gate, you will still be scaring off potential thieves.

Add Lights

Lighting up the outside of your house will also make burglars wary about trying to get into your home. This is because they won’t be able to sneak in. The neighbors will be able to easily spot them walking up to your home. Lights can also attract your attention if someone tries to enter your house while you are home. Buy a porch light that will turn on if it senses movement. You will then know that someone or something is moving outside. Hopefully, the light will have scared the burglar, and they won’t try to enter your home again!

Don’t Hide A Spare Key

Many families hide a spare key under their doormat or a flowerpot. However, burglars can easily find these and let themselves into your home. So instead of inviting burglars into your house, you should leave your spare key with a neighbor.

Could Your Basement Be More Than A Storage Space?

If your home has a basement, you should think yourself lucky. A basement is a fantastic resource to have, as it provides you and your family with a potential extra space. The chances are that right now your basement is simply being used as somewhere to dump all yours’ and your family’s old and unwanted items. If this is the case, don’t worry because you’re not alone. The majority of homeowners with basements use them simply for storage purposes. However, your basement has the potential to be so much more than that – it could be a fantastic extra space for you and your family.

Like the idea of transforming your basement to make it more than a storage space? Want some extra living space for your family? Here’s what you need to do:

living-room-728731_960_720Source for photo

Get some ideas and inspiration

The first step that you need to take is getting some ideas and inspiration. This is important as if you’re not sure what you want to do with the space, it can give you the chance to work this out. Research basement renovations to see what other people have done with their basements. This should give you lots of fantastic tips and ideas.

If there’s a room your family is in need of, maybe a games room for the kids, a guest bedroom, or an extra bathroom, consider turning the basement into that. Look online for ideas for making the most of the space. As well as for suggestions of color schemes and design ideas. The more ideas and inspiration you get, the better. As this will allow you to create the most amazing space for you and your family.

Make a plan

Once you’ve got some ideas and inspiration, the next step is to make a plan. This should detail what exactly it is that you want to do with the space, as well as how you’ll go about it. From the color scheme that you want to incorporate to the features that you plan on installing, every last thing should be noted down on your plan.

Creating a plan for your basement will make the renovation process much easier and less stressful. So it’s something that’s worth doing. You need to think about who you’ll need to do the renovation, is it just a builder and decorator or will you also need a plumber and electrician? This is something that it’s important to ask yourself so that you are aware of what help you need to hire. As well as how far your money will go. Of course, you could go DIY, but this would most likely make the project longer and more time-consuming, which is why it can be best to use a professional.

Have a clear out to get rid of any junk

Before you start your project, you need to take the time to have a clear out and get rid of any junk that’s been stored in your basement. Spend a weekend going through the space, clearing out any items that you no longer want or need. Anything that you do want to keep, find a new home for. Perhaps you could section off an area of your basement to use for storage still? That way, you’ll get your extra family space but will still have some storage, should you need it. Or, another option could be to use a self-storage facility to store anything that you no longer have the space for.

If you’re lucky enough to have a basement in your home, make the most of it. There are so many things that you can do with the space; it’s a shame to waste it and use it simply for storage. Plus, by investing in your basement and transforming it into a usable space, you will add value to your home.

Can You Tell If You’re Pregnant At Just Two or Three Weeks?

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

If you have been trying to get pregnant, it can feel like your life is in an endless loop of four weeks cycles. Between periods, your hope and expectation grows. You cross your fingers every time you go to the bathroom, hoping that your tampons are going to be given a nine-month leave of absence.

It’s a stressful time, with the weight of such high expectations frequently bearing down on you. Most women wait to take a pregnancy test when they have skipped a period or begin experiencing the classic symptoms, such as nausea. However, if you’re in tune with your body, there are a few early signs to look out for.

Sore Nipples or Breasts

This is a classic sign of hormonal changes, and the early stages of pregnancy are among the biggest hormonal imaginable. It can be confusing as these are also signs of an oncoming period. If you feel tenderness, ask yourself if this is normal for you. If it is, then don’t put too much into it. If, however, you don’t frequently have breast tenderness before a period, you never know.

Needing To Pee More Often

This is just so glamorous already isn’t it? Some of these signs of pregnancy aren’t going to have you at your best. But yep, this is something to look out for. If you have to take more regular trips to the bathroom, then there might be something going on. On the downside, this is also a sign of a UTI, but that will usually be accompanied by agonizing pain. Keep an eye on it.

Nausea and Stomach Upset

As with the soreness mentioned above, changes in hormones can disturb your whole system. If you find yourself having to be persuaded to eat, or experiencing nausea, then something might be afoot. Don’t expect the usual onslaught of morning sickness; these early disturbances are much milder.

Changes In Taste

640px-PenniesImage Credit: Wikipedia

This may be in some way linked to the cravings that many pregnant women experience. You may find that you go off foods that you usually love. Some women also describe a metallic taste in their mouth, like they have been swallowing copper coins. If you do experience this for more than a day or two, it’s definitely worth bringing it up with a doctor.

Back Pain

It’s unlikely to be so bad that you need to rest or take medication, but it might just appear in the early stages. As with morning sickness, it’s like a rehearsal of the more severe version that appears in the latter stages. If you find yourself with a little nagging pain in the small of your back, especially if you are not doing strenuous exercise, then it may be a sign.

Tiredness and Fatigue

640px-Sleep_woman (1)Image Credit: Wikipedia

Your body is preparing for something huge, so it’s going to be using up a lot of energy. If you’re struggling to get going more than usual or are falling asleep during the day, then this is a key sign. Take especial note if you’re sleepy even if you’ve had a good rest.

If you notice any of the above signs – or, ideally, them in combination – then you might want to try a pregnancy test, just to be sure!

How to Look After Your Home and Family and Keep Everything Safe

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

When you have your perfect family home, you will want to look after it and care for it as much as you can. Having a home is an investment. You want to make sure that you get a good return on that investment. But most of all, having a home means just that. You have somewhere to live; that will keep you and your family safe. You will want to take precautions to make sure that your home is kept safe. There is nothing worse than feeling that you have an unsafe home. So here are some ways that you can make your home a safer place to be.

Keep the House Clean

One thing that can be unhealthy and unsafe for the family is if there are pests or rodents in the home. So one way to avoid the chance of getting them is by keeping an orderly and clean home. Pests like to eat scrap food and crumbs. So keeping floors swept and carpet clean is a great way for you to reduce the chances of getting any unwanted guests. If you find that you do get some visitors, then there are things that you can do. There are all different types of rat traps available, so there will be one that is suitable for your family and children’s ages.

Install Light Timers

One great way to deter burglars is by having lights that come on at different times throughout the day or evening. If someone is watching the house, they will expect to see lights come on at night. So if you’re away, this won’t happen. So installing light switch timers will turn the lights on when you aren’t there. Light switch timers are inexpensive but are a great way to keep your home safe.

lock-974793_640image

Get Help From Friends and Neighbors

If you have close friends or family, it is a great idea to get them to help protect your home too. Having them or neighbors keep an eye on things when you are out of town is a great help. If you were to go away over winter, ask them to walk up to your home a few times a day. If there happens to be snowfall, footprints in the snow will lead to a safer home. If there are no footprints, people will get the idea that no one is home. It is good to have neighbors and friends take in parcels for you or bring in mail. If the mailbox looks full, or there are parcels outside, people will see that you aren’t home.

1188987400_6eca890710_zimage

Check Alarms Regularly

One of the best ways to keep your home safe is by having a fire alarm, burglar alarm and a carbon monoxide monitor. None of these things are any good if they stop working. So it is a good idea to check them in the test mode regularly. Then you know they are doing their job and will keep your family home, and the family inside, safe.

Checks You Need To Make When You Move House – Quick Tips

Moving house isn’t always plain sailing. You’re bound to come across a few curve balls during the process. Make your life simpler and get all the checks done by following these quick tips.

The house you are leaving

When it’s time to have your old property, there can be a mix of emotions. You made be sad to leave, but happy to move on all at the same time. But no matter how emotional you feel, don’t neglect the final check that you need to do.

Check inside the house.

Go through your kitchen cupboards and draws one last time, to make sure that you haven’t left anything important in there. The same applies to your attic. You’d be surprised how many people leave valuable items up there because out of sight means out of mind.

White goods

If you are leaving your white goods, remember to check that you have left the manuals for the next owners. Otherwise, they may end up being baffled by how to work them. Its also important that you check that your gas and electric provider know your moving out date. You don’t want to end up paying for the new owner’s lights and heating.

Leave a forwarding address

Also, you need to make sure that all your friends and family have your new address and phone number. You can do this by sending change of address cards before you move. This allows your nearest and dearest to send you housewarming gifts to your new address. It’s also important that you let your bank and any other important services know your post your new address.

The house you are moving into

When you first arrive at your new home, it can be tempting to start unpacking straight away. But the best thing to do is to make a cup of coffee and run through some checks before you start to unpack your stuff.

packing-40916_640Picture

Check under the house

Grab a flashlight and check under the house. Makes sure there is nothing under there that will cause any future problems like a burst pipe or a deceased animal that will start to smell.

Check the hot water

The next things you need to do is to turn the hot water and central heating on. Even in the height of summer! You can have it down low, but you need check that it works. If it doesn’t, get any central heating repairs done as soon after you move in as possible, to avoid leaks and burst pipes.

Check the garden

You also need to check the garden. Pay special attention to the fences. You need to make sure that all your fences are intact before you let your pets roam around in the yard on their own.

Check your bathroom

Another useful thing to check before you unpack is the bathrooms. Make sure that all the taps and showerheads are in working order and that the water pressure is high enough. It’s also a splendid time to check that they are cleaned to your own personal standard. As you haven’t unpacked yet, there is as there will be nothing to get in the way of a really deep and thorough clean.
