You will be surprised that 20% of Americans revealed in a survey that they get less than six hours of sleep at night. It is shocking, as it’s recommended that you get at least eight hours of sleep a night. But a lot of people struggle to get enough sleep and don’t know why it’s happening. They wake up every day and find themselves lacking in concentration and feeling exhausted. Here’re eight ways you can say goodbye to sleepless nights and feel ready for the day ahead.

Sleep with no light

If you want to ensure you are getting the required amount of sleep at night, you need to sleep with no light in the room. When light enters your bedroom, it can make your eyes open which will wake you up in the middle of the night. Therefore, you need to buy curtains which stop any light from getting into your bedroom. You can get blackout curtains which are ideal for ensuring you can have a good night’s sleep while it’s still light. If you find the light in the hallway keeps you awake at night, you may want to keep your bedroom door shut so that you can get more sleep.

Buy a new mattress

Another reason why you may not be getting enough sleep is that your mattress has seen better days. If you buy a mattress which lacks in quality, it will only have a short lifespan. It will leave you feeling uncomfortable in the night, meaning you will keep moving around in bed and waking up. You will also wake up with a bad back which will leave you feeling uncomfortable during the next day. You may need something more secure such as a memory foam mattress which will help you to get a better night’s sleep. Check websites for a great selection of the top memory foam mattresses on the market today.

Make sure your home isn’t too hot

You can also say goodbye to sleepless nights by making sure the temperature in your home is not too hot. If you are sweating while you’re trying to sleep, you will keep waking up and end up not getting enough sleep. You should set your temperature to ensure it stays at a colder temperature during the night. As we discuss here, you should check your bedding to keep cool in the summer. Use a lower tog duvet during the summer to keep cool. You could also get a ceiling fan which you could turn on for a short period at night. Just make you set it to turn off. Otherwise, you will get a huge electric bill! Open your bedroom window slightly if you know it’s going to be a hot night. If it’s going to be cold, make sure you wear warmer pajamas and use a higher tog duvet to keep warm. You don’t want to disturb your sleep as you are freezing.

Avoid sleeping in

Another reason why you are not getting enough sleep at night is that you are staying in bed longer in the morning. It can disturb your sleeping pattern, meaning you are waking up earlier and not being able to go back to sleep at night. It means you stay in bed till 10 am to make up for the lack of sleep. Try and avoid staying in bed past 8 am, so that your body is ready for sleep later on in the evening. As this article reveals, you should go for a daytime nap rather than have an extra sleep in the morning if you have had a late night. Otherwise, you will struggle to go to sleep when you head to bed.
