6 Ways That Pets Can Make Our Life Better

We often hear that a pet is for life and not just for Christmas. So in other words, they should be a well thought out decision. They are living and breathing, and they need to be cared for. When a pet is treated well, they have the best life; it is so good for them. What we need to remember is that it is good for us too. So here are some of the ways that having a pet can make our life better.

1. They Can Improve Your Confidence

Studies have shown that people that own pets are much more confident than those that don’t. Pet owners are reported to be much more extroverted. They are also said to be less scared or fearful than their non-pet owning counterparts. It could be the companionship or the love from your pet, but whatever the reason, it makes sense to get a pet.

2. They Can Make You More Positive

A lot of people that suffer from depression are advised to get a pet. It can help them to be more positive. The fact that you have something to care for can help a lot of people. For people that feel negative, it can give them something to live for and focus on.

3. They Make You Healthier

This does depend on the type of pet that you have. But it is hard just to lay in bed all day or watch movies all day long if you have a pet. A dog needs to be walked at least once a day. Cats need to be played with; other animals need to be cleaned and fed. They keep you active and as a result, can help you to be healthier.

4. You Will Feel Less Lonely

A pet can help you to feel less lonely too. I don’t think that pets replace human relationships. But in addition to them, they can help you feel happier and less lonely. It is no wonder that when you lose a pet, you can feel the same loss as any other member of the family. There are more and more people choosing to preserve the memory of their pet. One of the ways is by turning the pet fur into diamonds. Then the owner can always feel like they have their pet with them.

5. A Pet Can Reduce Your Stress Levels

When you brush your cat’s fur or take a dog for a walk, it can feel good. It helps you to bond too. Having a pet can relax you and reduce your stress levels. It can lower your blood pressure and alleviate that pent up feeling.

6. They Help You To Connect With Others

People with pets feel a sense of camaraderie. Much like parents of young babies. You see each other with your pet at the park, and it helps you to connect instantly. This goes hand in hand with the loneliness factor too. Having a pet can help you to meet people.

Do you have a pet at home? How have they blessed your life?

4 Common Issues All Homeowners Need To Be Prepared For

For many people, becoming a homeowner is an incredible achievement. It provides a sanctuary where you and your family can feel safe, secure and at ease. But when you become a homeowner the problems that come with the house are now solely your responsibility. So while it’s wonderful having a place to call your own, the simplest of issues can become a real nightmare. They can prevent you from enjoying your home to it’s fullest while also costing you time and money to rectify. But by knowing which areas to maintain and check you can stop minor issues from developing into costly and severe ones. So to help keep your home in the best condition possible, here are four common problems you need to be prepared for.

3685913847_31edb79c83_zFlickr

Roof damage

Your home’s roof is one of the most integral parts of its structure and requires plenty of care and attention. Roof problems come in many different forms and if left undealt with can compromise the safety and security of your home. So it’s a vital area that should never be overlooked or forgotten about. One of the leading causes of roof damage is the weather. Extreme heat and storms can cause cracks, holes and loosen the tiles on your roof. You can then experience leaking, and cracks in the walls and accidents can easily occur when the tiles fall off. These holes in your roof will only get worse over time. So inspect your roof regularly, particularly after adverse weather conditions. You may find other issues such as rot and mold that could also cause more severe damage later on. Minor roof maintenance such as replacing tiles and gutters can be done inexpensively and will make your roof handle damage a lot better. Always have roof repairs done by a professional to ensure it is being done to a high standard.

Infestation

Nobody likes the idea of an infestation in their home, but they are more common that you probably realise. From rodents to bed bugs, infestations are a frustrating problem to deal with. They can make you feel unhygienic and concerned about your family’s health. Plus they can become out of control in no time at all. So it’s vital that you do some research to find out the characteristics of different kinds of pest such as bites and droppings. This will make it easier to determine whether your home is infested and help you control the issue before it gets out of hand. Also, find out what methods are used to exterminate and control the pests such as termite fumigation and rat traps and how long they take to work. Get the number of a local pest control company and call for a consultation straight away if you think a problem is developing. The sooner you act, the quicker the problem can be dealt with.

Burst pipes

Flooding in your home can cause damage not only to the structure but to your belongings too. This is obviously the last thing you want and the quicker you act, the bigger the chance of saving these precious items. Burst pipes can happen for a number of reasons, from cold weather to unsuitable fixtures. So research how you can prevent a burst pipe from happening and what you need to do should it happen. Also, call an experienced and reputable plumber to check your pipe work and boiler for a service to make sure they are up to standard. You will most likely have to pay for this service, but it could save you far more expensive costs later on. Continue to check your pipes regularly, especially during the winter.

3147773510_5e895b6806_zFlickr

Damp

Damp can not only make your home unhealthy, but it can also wreak havoc with the foundation and structure. It is caused by moisture being unable to escape. Which over time can develop into a serious problem that could make your home uninhabitable. It can be caused by condensation and leaking roofs and gutters to name just a few and it comes in multiple forms. Damp usually occurs during the winter months, so take the time to check every room in your home. Bathrooms are a common place for damp to develop due to the excess steam and water use.  Again, contact a plumber or damp proofing specialist to help you deal with it if you find it present in your home.

Now you know what issues to look out for, it will be easier to stop them progressing. All houses age and deteriorate as they get older. So it’s vital that you do all that you check it regularly and keep it continually maintained. That way you will create a safe structure for your family to grow up in.

Top Ways To Know There Might Be An Issue With Your Electrics!

Electrics are very important in a property, and we use them for pretty much everything. That’s why the bills can be extraordinarily high every month. If something goes wrong, it can be a costly nightmare for you and your family. According to reports, over 50,000 house fires are down to electric malfunctions. Therefore, you really need to beware of what goes wrong.

So you can sort any issue before it gets worse, you should watch out for these signs below. Spotting them could potentially stop a fire which could do permanent damage to your home. As well as putting your family at risk. If you do spot a sign, you should research local companies so you can get hold of an electrician to fix the problem.

Lights flickering

If the lights are flickering in your property, then there is likely more going on than a problem with the light bulb itself. Some people tend to keep replacing the bulb, but this won’t be the answer. According to this article, it could be that too many appliances are connected to the same circuit. Therefore, one of your other appliances may be hogging all the electric, such as the washing machine, or the dishwasher. You should contact an electrician to move potentially your lights to a different circuit so that your lights won’t dim anymore. They will also be able to make sure there is no issue with the wiring.

Hot plugs

If you notice the plugs in your property are getting very hot, you should be concerned, and contact an Electrician. Despite the fact that appliances can get warm, the outlet itself should not get hot. Therefore, you should turn it off straight away, and use a different one. It could mean that it is wired incorrectly, so don’t use that plug until it’s been fixed. If you keep using it, you could end up with an electric shock!

Strange noises

If you hear strange noises in your property, it could be a sign that something is not wired correctly. Go around the property and check where it’s coming from. It tends to be a buzzing noise, and you can hear it carefully from the suspect plug. Ask another family member to also listen out for the sound. If it is the plug, this means the electric is not flowing correctly, and should be checked by a professional. Do not use it till after the Electrician has been.

Bad smell

If you can smell something strange in your property, then it could be your electric which is playing up. The appliance can smell the first time you use it, but after that, there shouldn’t be a bad odor.  You should check your switches to see if the smell is coming from them. As this article suggests, it could be faulty wiring, or even worse, the start of an electric fire. So, therefore, you should turn it off, and call an electrician straight away.

Your electrics are essential for running your household. Therefore, if you have an issue, it’s crucial to get it looked at. Don’t try and fix it yourself if you don’t have experience, as you could end up with an electric shock!

What Makes A Perfect Family Car?

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Buying a car at any time can be full of trials and tribulations. But looking for a car for the whole family is another thing altogether. There is just so much more to consider when it comes to family cars. The good news is that it is not all that difficult to get hold of decent family-friendly cars. And the even better news is that you do not need to spend an arm and a leg in order to get such a vehicle. If you are currently in the process of looking for a car for the family, then you might be wondering where to begin. There is so much to consider that the whole rigmarole can become a little confusing. But don’t worry. To help you out, I’ve put together this short list of factors to consider. Take these into consideration when you are shopping around, and you can’t go far wrong.

legs-window-car-dirt-road-51397Pic Source

Space

This is quite possibly the number one concern when you are hunting around for a family car. No matter how big or small your family is, how much space a car has is probably a paramount concern. This is particularly so if you are keen to take your car on long journeys or for holidays. With children and adults alike, comfort is key to the experience. So you want to make sure that you get a hold of a car with plenty of legroom for everyone. Your luggage is also something to take into consideration here. It’s a good idea to try and find a car which has a reasonable-sized boot. There is nothing worse than everyone being crammed in together with all the bags on a long journey. Given that, ideally, you want both legroom and a sizable boot, your ideal option is obviously quite a large car. Something like a people carrier might well be ideal. However, not everyone has the budget for such a vehicle. It all depends on your own situation, and what you think is best. Sometimes you need to make a bit of a compromise – that’s fine, too.

road-people-street-smartphonePic Source

Doors

You might not always put much consideration into the doors, but they can make quite a difference. The number of doors you need depends, once again, on what kind of family you have. The truth is, not many people really need a huge five-door car. Even for an average-sized family with three children, three doors is probably enough. Usually, they don’t cause enough bickering for it to be worth splashing out for a five-door car. However, if you are the kind of parent who likes to make things as easy as possible, then a five-door might well be your best option. It’s not just about the number of doors, either, but the type of door. Arguably, the best door type for a big family with sprawling kids is the sliding door. These make the whole getting in and out process so much easier. There is also the safety factor; sliding doors are less likely to hit any little ones unexpectedly. These things do happen, so it’s worth taking them into consideration!

Experience

At the end of the day, you are going to be the one doing the driving – unless you have an older child whom you trust a great deal! So as well as finding a car that the kids can enjoy, you need to take yourself into consideration as well. It is a good idea to ask yourself, off the bat, what kind of driving experience you enjoy? If you have always wanted to treat yourself to something a little flashy, then why not take this opportunity to do so? People often make the mistake of thinking that a family-friendly car can’t also be stylish. But that is not the case. Certain makes and models do well to keep everyone happy. BMW, for example, offer several models which give you that classy feeling while allowing for the behavior of your children. And with their reliability and those famous BMW tyres, you can be sure of your family’s safety as well. Remember: you are the driver, so you need to be happy with what you are driving.

Child-Friendly Features

Finally, let’s have a quick look at some of the child-friendly features which you want to look out for. Dark-colored interiors are a little stroke of genius, as they hide spills and stains much more effectively. You might also like to look for rear-tinted windows, in order to help save your children’s eyes from the rays of the sun. Increasingly, parents are swearing by in-car DVD players. Whether or not this is a necessary addition is something for you to decide alone. Whatever you go for, remember that comfort and safety are always the paramount concerns.

Making Happy Teenagers

If you have children between 13 and 18, chances are they are experiencing some of the many issues the average teenager comes across. However, no matter where they are in this 5-year process (although it may be longer or shorter), there are ways to help them through. Here are a handful of suggestions. Pick one or try them all; the choice is yours. But whatever you choose, remember that the benefit is for more than just them. Happier teenagers make for a happier home, and any improvements in mood will positively impact you and others in the house as well.

Give Them Time Off

They get up early every weekday to go to school and then spend all day learning. They’re learning to cope with lots of different pressures, from dating to exams. The teenage life is rarely an easy one, and in fact, can be very exhausting. This is why your teenager needs a bit of time off every now again. This could be excusing them from washing up one night a week, or arranging for them to go on a day-trip with their friends. Just as adults need to recharge our batteries, so do our teens. A bit of time off will revitalize them for the next day. Their energy levels will raise and their moods will improve.

14689258425_101d467147_zImage link

Arrange Creative Therapy

From arts and crafts to outdoor pursuits and theater, the creative arts can be highly impactful on teenagers. This is no matter their attitude or nature. Take Wilderness Therapy For Troubled Youth, for example. These programs are all about empowerment, improving the choices the kids make and teaching them ways to cope and break bad habits.

Meanwhile, joining a local amateur dramatics society can help boost the self-esteem of a particularly shy teen. Or, if you’re kid struggles to make friends as they have less mainstream interests, get them involved in a group that nurtures this. If they prefer gardening to football, for example, cater to this.

Organize Counselling If They Need It

As has already been discussed, the teenage years can be highly challenging. It may be beneficial for your teen to have someone to talk to who is removed from your family. They will likely be able to be more open and honest about any issues they are having. This is especially true if they are awkward or uncomfortable situations to discuss with parents. The might be topics like safe sex and STD worries, for example. You’ll also be empowering them to be independent, and showing that you trust them. Help your teen find someone they feel comfortable with, and then leave them to it. Despite the confidentiality agreement, the counselor can tell you if anything very serious has been discussed.

Watch Their Diet

The older our kids get, the less control we have over what they eat. If you suspect your teen is eating lots of bad food when not in your care, make up for it when they are. Home-cooked meals are generally far healthier than anything pre-packaged or ready-made. You are in control of the ingredients, and can tweak as necessary. For example, if a teen is anemic, you can increase the amount of red meat they’re eating with their evening meals.

Help Them Out with School
One of the key things that can cause your teenager stress is school and exams. The pressure can become too much for some and trying to find the motivation to study when they’ve got so much going on is difficult. You can find lot’s of information online surrounding how to motivate your teen to study, such as the article “How to Get Motivated to Study: 23 Tips for Students Who Procrastinate” by Daniel Wong which outlines some of the key methods you can try.

Six Questions To Ask Before You Apply For A Loan

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Applying for a loan is a part of growing up and becoming your own person. You can’t rely on your family to provide for you forever, and you need an alternative. Plus, some loans are just too big to ask your mom and dad for help. With a loan, you the can finally become an adult and stand on your feet without any help. Still, that doesn’t mean that loans are all good. In fact, they are dangerous, and they can cause a lot of financial difficulties. To avoid this further down the road, you need to learn more about the loan. And, what’s the best way to learn? The best way to learn is to ask questions.

Here are the six questions you need to ask if you’re applying for a loan. It doesn’t matter whether you are a first-timer or a pro – you still need to ask.

#1: How Much Do I Need?

After the 2008 banking crisis, it’s not okay to trust the bank’s judgement. If that crisis taught us anything, it’s always to do your research. With this nugget of information in mind, you want to crunch the numbers and figure out how much you need. The trick is always to borrow within your means. You may need hundreds of thousands of dollars, but you may not be able to afford the rate. If that’s the case, ask for less. Once you have a quote, you can reference it against your monthly budget. If that quote is within your budget, you are good to proceed.

#2: Will I Qualify For The Loan?

Unfortunately, you will harm your credit rating if you apply for a loan that you don’t receive. The best option is only to apply for a loan that you will get. But, how do you know when they will accept your application and when they will reject it? You can ask the lender for their minimum loan requirements beforehand. This information will give you an insight into what the organization expects from all of their applicants. For instance, it will give you the minimum credit score required. All you have to do then is see where your score ranks.

approved-1049259_640source

#3: What’s My Credit Score?

You may not know your credit score because you have never had to use it before. Don’t worry because it is easy to find. There are plenty of online companies that will provide you with a free credit score if you sign up with them. Or, you can go to your bank and ask them to do it for you over the counter. Your credit score is going to determine whether you get the loan, so you need to make sure it is healthy. If you need to give it a boost, go to http://www.totallymoney.com. There, you will find a range of ways to improve your rating and increase your chances of getting accepted.

home-loan01-lgsource

#4: Is A Bank The Only Option?

No, there are lots of other options. Banks only seem like they are the only option because they have a monopoly on loans. When was the last time you heard of someone who didn’t get a mortgage from the bank? Exactly. Still, that doesn’t mean you look around at other lenders to find the best deal. After all, credit unions are a good source of money if you are looking for a small loan. And, short-term lenders like http://www.PersonalMoneyStore.com are good if you have bad credit. However, your family is by far your best choice. With a family loan, you don’t have to worry about the monthly repayments and the high rates of interest. As they have your best interests at heart, they won’t put you under pressure to pay.

#5: Do I Have The Money To Repay The Loan?

Never apply for a loan if you can’t afford the repayments. If you do, you will only find yourself in more trouble than when you started. After all, you also have to pay the rate of interest on top of the total loan. Take a good look at your finances before you sign on the dotted line. If they are in good shape, you’re okay to continue. But, if they aren’t, then the alarms should sound in your head.

4222474443_a5e2ebaabe_zsource

#6: What Happens If I Can’t Pay?

The odds are that the loan will move onto your next of kin. It is important to understand this before you continue because you could put them at risk if you die. Okay, you don’t plan on dying anytime soon, but things happen. And, if you do die, they will be liable.

5 Tips For Volunteering Abroad

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Summer is on the way which means it’s time to start putting your vacation plans in place. If this year you fancy a trip with a difference, consider volunteering. If you’re someone who loves adventure and helping others, volunteering could be perfect.

If the idea of volunteering appeals to you, have a read of these five tips to get an idea of the best ways to go about organising your trip.

VAN_laughter_Peter_SwainCredit for image

1. Consider how long you want to go for

The first factor that you need to consider is how long you want to travel for. Whatever time you can spare, be it two weeks or two months, it doesn’t matter. You can choose to volunteer for as little or as long as you like. It’s important to work out how long you plan on being away for – this will determine the best projects for you.

2. Take your skills and interests into account

When selecting a project, think about your skills and interests. If you’re someone who loves animals, a project from the great projects, that is based around animals, could be ideal. If you’re someone who’s a dab hand with DIY, maybe a house or school building project would be right up your street? It’s just a case of thinking about your likes and dislikes and choosing a project that’s suitable.

3. Pick a place you’ve always wanted to visit

If there’s somewhere, you’ve always dreamt of visiting, see if there’s a project there. You’ll be putting a lot of time and effort into your chosen project, so picking a destination you’ve always wanted to visit is a good idea. You’ll enjoy your trip more if you’re spending time in a place that interests you. If possible, pick a country you’ve never visited before to make the experience more exciting.

4. Decide whether to invite a friend to join you

Traveling alone as a woman can be a little daunting. That’s why you might want to consider inviting a friend or partner to come along with you. Not only will traveling with a friend make you less nervous about your trip, but it will also make your time away more fun. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that if you travel with a friend, you won’t get to know new people because you will do. When you’re living and working in such close proximity, it’s impossible not to get to know everyone.

5. Work out your budget

Before you book your trip, you need to work out how much you can afford to spend. Most volunteer projects come with a set fee which includes the cost of your flights, accommodation and food. However, it’s important to research this before booking your trip. This is important as you need to know how much money to save for your trip. Else, you could end up struggling to afford everything that you need.

If you want to help others, experience new cultures and meet people from all over the world, volunteering abroad is perfect.

It is an alarming fact that our way of life is threatening the future of our planet. Changes need to be made now to protect our environment for our children, and for their children. By making a few simple changes and leading a more sustainable life, we can make a difference.

Make Do and Mend

Don’t be too quick to throw things away if they can be mended. How often have you discarded socks or sheets because they had a hole? Many items can be mended with a few stitches. If items are beyond repair, then try and find an alternative use for them. Torn sheets can be cut up into washcloths or similar. Plastic pots and bottles can be used as planters. Before discarding, ask yourself if items can be reused.

Collect Water

Consider collecting water in the garden. This can be used in the summer months to water the plants. Or consider a more sophisticated water tank from The Water Tank Factory. This would significantly decrease your water consumption.

tomato-676532_640Image from Pixabay

Grow Your Own Food

Growing your own fruit and veg will cut down on packaging and transportation costs. It will also cut down on fuel consumption and emissions from these processes. You will also know exactly what is going into your food and how it has been produced. Start small with a few herb pots and tomato plants and gradually expand.

Cut Down on Takeaways

Cutting down on takeaways helps reduce fuel consumption, carbon emissions and packaging. Cook food yourself when you can. This will also save you money and will benefit your health.

Cut Down on Paper Towels

It’s true that paper towels come in very handy for messes and spills. But it’s surprising how many we get through in the space of a week. Try replacing them with cheap, washable cloths. They do the same job, but they can be washed and used repeatedly.

Make Your Own Cleaning Products
