rachael rayThe ASPCA Rachael Ray 100K Challenge is an annual challenge in which animal shelters around the country compete to see who can save the most lives. This marks the fifth and final year of the competition. Since 2010, hundreds of contestants have dedicated themselves to this three month contest to increase their adoption numbers over the previous year. In this final year of the challenge, the competing shelters saved more than 68,000 lives in just three months!  What an incredible achievement.  This is more than twice the increases when they started in 2010.
In five years total, challengers saved more than a QUARTER OF A MILLION lives – an increase of nearly 60,000 cats and dogs – with dozens of animal shelters increasing their adoptions by 100% or more compared to previous years.  How amazing is that?!?!

Adopting animals from local shelters is so important to my family.  We adopted all of our pets from local shelters or as strays that were going to be brought to a shelter.  I love hearing about all of these shelters working so hard to get so many animals loving adoptive forever homes.  Congratulations to the 2014 Challenge winners and to all those who competed over the past five years. They all deserve a round of applause!

Please visit the Challenge site to view the 2014 winners and overall results.

My girls are hard on their glasses so I love that I can get them great pairs of glasses without breaking the bank at Coastal.com.  Coastal has a great $49 Frame Collection! Plus you can add lenses starting at $19 and you get free shipping & handling on ALL eyeglasses & sunglasses (no minimum).

At prices like this we can get a pair for each of our girls to use as a back up.  A few weeks ago our dog decided to eat my younger daughter’s glasses and we had to wait for a new pair of glasses to come in.  I wish we had ordered back up pairs back then.  I’m now going to order both of them back up pairs.  My husband falls asleep with his glasses on and I am always afraid that they’ll break so I am going to get him a pair from Coastal.com, too.

What better way to pay homage to Mr. Peabody himself than an adorable bow tie accompanied by black retro round frames? Add a little black face paint to the nose and some floppy white ears and you’ll have to do a double take! Of course some of those round frames, freckles and a pair of white sneakers would also make for a great Sherman.

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to interior design. You might find that you always tend to go for the same colors and styles.

If you think it’s high time you livened things up in your property, take a look at the following design tips. They should help you to give your home a twist.

Think outside the box when choosing furniture

One easy yet effective way to inject personality into your property is to think outside the box when choosing furniture. Instead of seeking out staid, traditional products, why not go for something altogether more unusual instead? For example, bean bags can make a superb addition to lounges. These items come in a range of different sizes and styles and you can get versions that have ample space for two or more people to use.

Also, don’t be afraid to go for unusual materials. For example, rather than opting for standard tables and desks, you could take a look at the brightly colored glass or plastic versions now available.

Create dramatic effects with lighting

It could be time to shake up your lighting too. Of course, the products you select for your home have to serve a practical purpose. However, this doesn’t mean they have to be dull. Try using different colored lights. This can create stunning effects.

You can also incorporate LED lights into your flooring. Set into tiles or floorboards, these products make a great addition to areas such as hallways.

Have fun with color

When it comes to decorating your home, be bold with your colors. It’s true that covering all the walls in a room with bright hues can be a little over the top. However, it’s easy to create a balanced look by designing feature walls. This can give an eye-catching and mood-lifting look. You can echo the colors you use on these walls with your choice of soft furnishings, rugs and artwork.

Bear in mind that if you get sick of your color scheme, you can always change it. This means you’ve got a license to have some fun and see what happens.

Add some talking points

For extra pizzazz, include some talking points around your property. For example, unusual artwork is bound to cause a stir. Paintings and sculptures that incorporate unexpected colors or shapes can transform the appearance of rooms. For the best results, make sure these items are placed in prime spots where they’ll get plenty of exposure. You can also draw added attention to the objects by highlighting them with spotlights or picture lights.

All of these simple tips will help to transform the look of your home and give it a twist. Meanwhile, if you’re after further inspiration, you can take a look at pictures of unusual properties over the web. Perusing these interior design pictures should provide you with all the ideas you need.

The best thing is, you don’t have to spend much to achieve impressive results. Regardless of your budget, you can add style and interest to your abode.

Simple Steps to Fix a Noisy Washing Machine

146211210_7579d07c99When home appliances go wrong, it’s tempting to hit the shops and buy replacements. However, you can save yourself cash and help the planet if you get stuck into some DIY and fix the items instead. For example, if you have a noisy washing machine that seems to be on its last legs, you may be able to get it working like new by following these simple steps.

Safety first

Before you attempt anyappliance repair, it’s really important that you think about safety. This means you should turn your washing machine off and unplug it to avoid any danger of electrocution. If the appliance is in the middle of a cycle, stop and drain it according to the instructions provided by your manufacturer.

Unbalanced loads

Rather than being a technical fault, the alarming or annoying noises being made by your washer may be the result of the way you load it. Putting one heavy item, like a large bath towel, into the drum by itself or with light garments can cause issues. When items such as towels are soaking wet, they are much weightier than they are when dry. When they stick to the drum during the spin cycle, they can therefore unbalance the machine and cause it to shake.

To avoid this, make sure you always put balanced loads into the drum. Placing several heavy items like towels or bedding into the machine at the same time should achieve this.

A firm footing

If it’s not the load causing the problems, it may be the feet of your washer. All of the feet should be in firm contact with the floor. If they’re not, you might have to adjust them. You can usually do this by unlocking the nuts and then unscrewing the feet. Always remember to tighten them properly after you’ve made any adjustments.

Ideally, your washer should be completely level. To check if it is, use a spirit level. Simply alter the feet until you’ve achieved the desired result.

Bearing failures

If the previous steps don’t address the issue, your appliance might have a failure of its bearings. To check this, turn the drum while it’s empty. If you feel resistance, it’s likely that bearings will need to be replaced. Another indication that your bearings have gone is that the drum has fallen slightly and isn’t in line with the rubber seal around the door any more.

Unless you really know your stuff when it comes to DIY, you’ll probably need to get an expert in to fix this problem.

Use the web

If you’re ever unsure of anything when it comes to appliance repair, it’s worth taking a look on the internet. There’s plenty of advice and information available online and technical problems are often easy to resolve yourself. You can order any spare parts you need and follow simple procedures to fix your appliances.

If this fails, you can always get a professional in to take a look at your machines instead. Unless your appliances are past the point of no return, this is much better than simply purchasing brand new versions.
