Disclosure- I received a mermaid tail and monofin in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
20161209_163131Have you ever dreamed of being a mermaid? I’m pretty sure most girls have thought about what it would be like to be a mermaid and have a long, beautiful tail. Well now thanks to Fin Fun tails, girls and even women fulfill their mermaiden dreams. The holidays are coming and if you have mermaid lovers on your gift list, I have the perfect idea for you. The Fin Fun Mermaidens collection features tails based on the beloved Mermaiden Princess characters, each with a unique personality and story, which can be found on the kid-friendly FinFriends.com site.

20161209_163224My older daughter turned 13 last week and as long as I can remember, probably since the first time she saw The Little Mermaid, she has dreamed of what it would be like to be a mermaid. Of course she knows that she’ll never turn into a real mermaid but with the Fin Fun tails, she can get pretty close! We were sent the beautiful pink, purple, and blue Fin Fun tail that my daughter picked out and she was so excited to try it out. 20161209_165614There are many different colors and styles to choose from including one that looks like a peacock and one that looks like a butterfly! It’s hard to choose a favorite!

There are lots of sizes available on the website so make sure to measure the wearer and choose the right size. I’m not sure why when I first heard of these mermaid tails I thought it would be rubbery (maybe I’ve watched too many mermaid movies LOL) but I was wrong. The tail is made of a high-quality, soft polyester/spandex blend fabric which is very comfortable according to my daughter. We were also sent tail protectors which are thick, clear stickers that go on the ends of the tail to keep them from getting scratched up on the pool surface. I suggest getting them to protect your new tail. It is form fitting like a mermaid tail should be but it was easy to slide up over her legs and hips because the bottom of the tail is open for that purpose. Wearers can walk safely on land by pulling the fin up over their legs and having their feet stick out of the bottom.
20161209_165537To make the mermaid experience even better and more realistic I suggest also getting the patented Fin Fun Monofin (available for separate purchase). It provides natural mermaid motion for smooth swimming at the pool, lake or beach. It really makes the mermaid tail feel and act more realistic. You can see in the picture below how it really gives the mermaid tail shape compared to picture of my daughter holding up the tail above. In the Monofin feet are not strapped in, making removal of the Monofin easy, with just one tug and a kick. The open tail bottom makes it easy to insert and remove the Monofin (required for swimming), while also avoiding trapped air and allowing mermaids to walk on land. Now all my daughter needs is swim goggles and she’s ready to hit the pool!

Note- the Monofin is only for experienced swimmers who can swim well with feet positioned together and who can butterfly kick with ease. It doesn’t come in toddler sizes for this reason.
20161209_1646170In the picture above you can see how the bottom of the tail is open so you can easily slip the Monofin in for swimming and out for walking. For safety make sure to put the Monofin into the mermaid tail at the edge of the water because it is not recommended to walk with the Monofin on. In our hurry to take pictures for the post my daughter put the tail and Monofin on while sitting on a lounge chair. Then we wanted to take some pictures by the side of the pool and realized we had to take the monofin off so she could walk over to the side of the pool. Just keep that in mind and put the Monfin on where you are going to be getting into the pool.
20161209_164921We live in South Florida where it is hot most of the year but of course as luck would have it it had been “cold” here for the last week so unfortunately my daughter wasn’t able to try her mermaid tail out in the water yet. We’re hoping she’ll be able to actually swim with it the next time the weather gets warm again and I’ll update the post. Poor child was freezing in these pictures since it was in the upper 60’s (which is pretty cold for a Florida girl wearing a bathing suit), overcast, and about to rain but she did her best to make it look warm and sunny don’t you think? Ah the life of a blogger’s child!

Practical Things You Can Do In The Home To Support Your Child’s Educational Achievement

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

As a parent, we can spend a lot of time instilling in our children how important their education is. We remind them to try their best at school even if they don’t like a subject, and ask the teachers for help when they are unsure of something. But not all of a child’s educational achievement is based on what they do at school. Some things at home can also play a part too. That is why it is vital that as parents we get the home part right, so they have a better chance getting the school part right, on a day to day basis.

Diet

What our kids eat, affects how well they concentrate. That means it is the duty of a parent to ensure that they are supplying them with access to regular healthy meals. Yes, it can be a battle making sure that they have breakfast before they leave the house. But it is such a fantastic way of helping them to maintain their concentration through the day.

Of course, it doesn’t matter that the odd treat or junk food meal should happen from time to time. Remember kids are much more likely to rebel against the rules, if there is no built-in safety valve for the odd misstep here and there.

carrot-kale-walnuts-tomatoesImage

Sleep

One of the most vital things you can do at home as a parent, is to make sure that you kids get a good night’s sleep regularly. Both school and being a child is pretty draining, so they need more sleep than adults anyway.

You can improve their sleep time and quality by making their bedrooms pleasant. Paint them in relaxing color of the child’s choice. Get them a good quality bed and check out sites like Best Of Mattress to get some information before you buy. Being comfortable in their bedroom will help them to wake refreshed and full of energy for each day of school.

Rest And Fun Time

pexels-photo-128893Picture link

Remember too that ‘all work and no play makes Jonny a dull boy.’ If you are so focused on grades and achievements that all of your child’s time is full up with a study, it can be very damaging.

Firstly no one can study all the time, as eventually, the information will just stop sticking. Everyone needs a rest! Secondly, it will put you child under so much pressure that they will come to resent the studying take up all of their time. Which cause them to be anxious or to lose motivation.

Extra Curricular Activities

Any parent knows that colleges aren’t just looking for children with educational achievements. But they also want to see that they have the necessary character to succeed in a college environment.

This mean that they look on kids that have a job, or that help out in the community favorable. It’s because it shows that they are capable of committing to something and seeing it through. It also indicates that they are varied and balanced individuals who will be able to adapt themselves to the college environment.

girl-1131853_640Image source

So it can be a good idea to encourage your child to get a job outside of school. Or you could even use your home as a base in which they can help others in the community like feeding programs or clothing drives.

Considering A Reptile Pet? Read This First!

Compared to dogs, cats and lots of other types of pets- reptiles are relatively low maintenance when it comes to their everyday care requirements. They’re incredibly interesting creatures and are a great option for those with allergies, long working hours or without much spare time. While reptiles won’t need to be given love and hugs in the same way as a cat or dog, they are still living creatures and are still a big responsibility. Adopting any pet shouldn’t be taken lightly, so before taking the plunge, it’s important to know what you’re getting into. Reptiles have many unique requirements regarding care and diet, so as a potential new owner you need to be clued up on how to look after them.

nature-hand-animal-glasscredit

Diet

There are a wide range of reptiles out there each eating different kinds of food. But one thing many of them have in common is they’re a lot different to feeding other kinds of animals. Lots of reptiles will require live food such as insects, or whole baby mice which are frozen and then defrosted before feeding. Unlike with mammals or even fish, the food isn’t prepackaged and ready to go. Even if you love reptiles, for some people keeping live insects or frozen baby rodents on hand is enough to put them off. Is this something you would be comfortable with as a reptile owner? If you’re looking for a herbivorous reptile instead, a tortoise would be a good option. They eat things like leaves, fruits and flowers so are great if you don’t want to have to feed live food

Cost

The cost of buying reptiles will largely depend on the species, size, and age. The area where you live will also influence the cost. Some smaller snakes, geckos, and other reptiles can cost under a hundred dollars whereas more rare or larger species can cost several hundred. But it’s not just the upfront cost of the animal you have to worry about, but rather the setup. Tanks, vivariums and all of the equipment that goes along with it can set you back several hundred dollars even for the basics. On top of this, you need to buy their live food as well as any potential vet treatment. You will need to find an exotic vet who specializes in the pet you have chosen; many standard vets won’t treat reptiles or unusual animal species. And as exotic vets are rarer, they generally charge more money too. A bit of planning goes a long way, the last thing you want is to buy your reptile and not be able to afford it or care for it if it gets sick.

Time

Reptiles are relatively low maintenance pets; they don’t require a whole lot of daily maintenance, handling or attention to stay happy and healthy. This isn’t to say you can’t handle your pet if you want to, but unlike cats, dogs, and other mammals it’s not vital to their wellbeing. Time includes things like regular pet shop visits to get their food, and cleaning their vivarium. You will need to keep it clean and tidy, regularly removing droppings and uneaten food to stop smells and pests.

All The Ways You Can Improve Your Weight Loss!

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

If losing weight were easy, then there wouldn’t be books, websites meal plans and products dedicated to helping you. Of course, it isn’t that easy. But is is possible, and there are a lot of things big and small that you can do help yourself on your weight loss journey. Read on to find out about some of them, and see if they can make a difference in your life.

Diets

So the biggest factor is weight loss is your diet. You are what you eat! Change what you are eating, and you can expect to lose some weight. There are so many diets out there, so there is almost certainly one that you will be able to find to suit your lifestyle.

tape-403593_640Image

You can choose to use meal replacement like Slimfast. This is when you have a healthy dinner in the evening, but replace your breakfast, lunch, and snacks with either shake calorie controlled food. This is a way of reducing the total amount of calories that you consume. While still making sure that you are getting all the nutrients that you need to be healthy.

Another diet you may want to try is a slimming group like Slimming World. This is both a diet and a support system for those of you that are trying to lose weight. Your first session is where they induct you into the rules of what you can eat. Slimming World is quite novel in dieting circles, as they encourage you to eat as much as you need to be full, but of the right type of food. So that means they are less about restriction than some of the other diet clubs. Then you return every week for a private weigh-in, and stay for a discussion about how you did, and get tips and trick from other members.

If you’re rather doing things on your own, you could try clean eating instead. This is a diet that promotes natural organic and unprocessed food as they are easy for the body to digest and process. But if your goal is weight loss you will need to keep an eye on how much fat you include in your diet as it is big on nuts, seeds, and coconut oil.

Exercise

Although exercise isn’t actually necessary to lose weight, it definitely does speed things up a bit. There are plenty of options, no matter what your fitness level is, for you to try. You can join the gym, a running club or even play squash.

plank-1327256_640Picture link

Of course, you can easily exercise in your own home as well. There are dance workouts, yoga workouts, and bikini body workouts that you can try. A word of warning, though, check out this latest review on Kayla, before buying a bikini body DVD or download. As not all workouts are created equal, and not everything is going to work for everybody.

Fat Blockers

Another way you can improve your weight loss is by using fat blockers. These are tablets that you can get at your pharmacist, don’t buy them online without a prescription. They work by attaching to the fat and carbohydrates that you consume, and blocking it from entering the body.

While they are not a weight loss solution on their own, they can definitely help you make the most of your hard work when it comes to losing weight.

Surgery

Some people only need to lose a few pounds to get to their goal weight, while other may need to lose a hundred or more. When you have a lot of weight to lose it can be very tough, both socially and psychologically.

But something that can help is surgery. Of course, all surgical procedures come with risks and shove never be entered into lightly. But if you have struggled with your weight all your life, getting a procedure like a gastric sleeve can be the boost you need to get your weight under control.

Burning calories through everyday activities

Another thing that people often forget is that you don’t have to go to the gym or workout to burn calories. Just moving your body from A to B burns energy.

You can actually make use of this by getting off the bu a stop earlier on the way to work. Or doing some intensive gardening for half and house instead of sitting on the couch and watching TV. Other everyday activities that you can do to help your weight loss include playing catch with the kids or cleaning the house. They all require movement so will help you achieve that calorie deficit you are looking for.

Portion control

hamburger-1549234_640Picture source

Something else that it is easy to forget about that can help weight loss is portion control. In the west, there is more food than is needed, but this has a downside as it means portion sizes have got large and larger over time. That has really warped the view of what a normal sized meal should be.

In fact, our stomachs are only about the size of an orange before they get stretched out. So that is the size of the portion that we should be eating at one time.

To help you get your portions right, you can use something like a portion plate guide. Then you will learn what is the right amount of each sort of food.

Awareness

Possibly the hardest thing that can help you improve your weight loss is to train yourself to recognize when your body is full. Often times people eat when they are thirsty, tired or stressed. If you eat in response to these triggers, then you will be consuming much more than the calories you need in a day. This will make weight control very difficult.

meditate-1851165_640Image here

That is why it’s a good idea to train your mind and body to work together to recognize what is actually going on when you received a hunger signal.

You can do this through practicing mindfulness, especially before and after eating. In this way, you can stop eating for any other reason than hunger.  As you learn to recognize the difference between that and other emotional states.

10 Swimwear Trends to Watch For in 2017

It may be 20 degrees outside right now, but swimwear season is just a few short months away. Soon enough, you’ll be ready to spend long, lazy afternoons lounging by the pool or splashing in the waves at the beach. If you’re on the lookout for a new swimsuit in the 2017 season, check out these trends to keep you fashionable while you’re having fun.

1. Retro-Inspired

From polka-dotted bikinis to striped one-piece swimsuits, retro-inspired suits are in style for the 2017 season. If you prefer full coverage styles, choose a one-piece. For the best of both worlds, choose a bikini with full bottoms and a top that ties in the back.

2. Bridal Suits

A white, lacy swimsuit may not be for everyone, but it’s the perfect trend if you’re planning a destination wedding or a tropical honeymoon this spring or summer. Bridal-inspired suits are available in a range of styles. Choose a single-piece or bikini, full coverage or something super sexy. Regardless of which one you choose, strangers at the beach will be just as enamored by your beautiful choice as your partner is.

3. Halter Tops

Do you want your 2017 swimsuit to be the perfect mixture of modest and sexy? Try a bikini with a halter top. Full coverage options leave a lot to the imagination, but you can go a bit sexier by opting for a bikini top that has sheer inserts or lace cutouts.

4. Nude Tones

From lipstick to stilettos, nude shades have taken the fashion world by storm in 2016 and they show no signs of stopping before the 2017 swimsuit season. Low-cut, V-neck single-piece suits are modest without looking frumpy. If you prefer, choose something sexier in the form of a bikini with lace-up sides or rhinestone embellishments.

5. Wild Prints

Leopard print is out. This season’s swimsuits are all about geometric shapes, bright florals, and tribal-inspired prints. Small prints or prints in only two colors are classic and understated while bright, multi-colored prints attract attention. Dress up either style with ruffles, cut-outs, lace, or other embellishments.

6. Tasseled Swimsuits

Part your grandmother’s doily and part cowboy-themed getup, tasseled swimsuits add an ornamental theme to an otherwise basic swimsuit in 2017. Full-coverage options can include tassels on the back or hips to add style. If you prefer sexier swimsuits, choose a bikini with tassels on the top to draw eyes up. Tasseled suits are casual enough for a daytime pool party but flirty enough to wear to an evening on the beach.

7. Plunging Necklines

If you’ve always loved Jennifer Lopez’s dress circa the Grammy Awards in 2000, you’ll want to snatch up this 2017 swimsuit trend. One-piece swimsuits with necklines that plunge to the belly button or even lower are sexy and revealing without risk of it all falling out when you hit a big wave. Go classic with a statement black or white piece or choose from plenty of patterns to add personality to your style.

8. One-Shoulder Styles

If you’ve always been a bit too large-chested to comfortably wear a strapless bikini, now is your time to shine. You can get the best of both worlds with the 2017 trend of one-shoulder swimsuits. Whether you choose a full-coverage one-piece with a wide shoulder strap or a smaller bikini with daintier straps is up to you. Either way, you can mix it up with rhinestone embellishments, tassels, or one of the many prints that are popular this season.

9. Ballet-Inspired Styles

Swimsuits don’t have to be bold to be sexy. Fashionistas who prefer dainty or sophisticated styles will adore the season’s ballet-inspired swimsuits. From traditional leotard looks to tutu-covered bikini bottoms and sheer cover-ups, ballet styles are elegant yet appropriate for the beach. Toss on a pair of ballet flats as the perfect accessory for this look.

10. Bold Accessories

Regardless of which 2017 swimsuit trend you choose, you’ll likely want to accessorize. Classic flip flops or flats paired with a wide-brimmed hat and big sunglasses are perfect for a casual afternoon at the beach. Are you going to a swanky rooftop pool party? Swap out the flip flops for strappy sandals and skip the hat in favor of classic beach waves. Keep the glasses, though, and no matter where you swim, don’t forget the sunscreen!

When choosing your 2017 swimsuit, the most important rule of trends is to skip the ones that don’t work for you. If you don’t like a style, don’t spend money on it. Focus on the ones that make you feel happy, beautiful, and confident instead.

New Pups: How to Pick the Right Accessories for a New Dog

Next to cats, dogs are one of the most popular pets that people own. They’re loyal, friendly and offer some protection depending on the breed. They make the perfect pets to help people stay active as well because they demand to be taken outside and played with—they’re a great companion to healthy individuals.

But raising a puppy isn’t an easy job. They require a lot of love and care, and there are some essential tools and gadgets that every dog owner needs for the safety and security of their pet.

pexels-photo-164186(Photo Source)

A Collar and Leash

A puppy needs to have both a collar and a leash to prevent them from running off outside and getting lost. A collar can be both expensive and cheap depending on what type of design the owner wants, and it holds vital information such as a dog license and identification tag. In the event the dog is lost and is found by someone, it can make its way back to the owner with help from the collar.

A leash is also a crucial part of dog safety. Owners need a way to control their dog and keep it from running away on walks, and a leash is the most common way to keep an eye on a dog. The collar and leash must not be too tight that it strangles the dog, and there needs to be a two-finger gap between the collar and the neck of the dog. Check on this spacing every couple of months, and purchase new collars or loosen the current one whenever the dog has grown.

The leash can also be customised in length and design. A basic leash is fine for most owners, but it can be personalised to add some flair and style if needed. A long leash is best for a larger dog, and a short leash is enough while the dog is still a puppy.

Containment Areas

It’s normal for owners to feel bad about keeping their pets inside of a containment area, but it’s essential when training a dog. It’s important to have an area where the owner can keep an eye on their dog, such as a comfortable play area or den. There needs to be a dog bed, food and water bowls, and entertainment such as toys for the dog to stay occupied.

Owners also need to purchase a crate for their dog. It needs to be sturdy but light enough to carry with a dog inside, such as a Proselect Empire Dog Crate. It’s useful for taking a dog to the vet or to keep it safe inside of transportation. They can usually be fitted with comfortable furnishings like a blanket or pillow so that the dog doesn’t feel caged.

Grooming Supplies

Items like a blow dryer, a brush and comb are necessary to keep the dog’s coat clean and free of dirt and bugs. It’s also important to purchase a specialised pair of clippers to keep the dog’s toenails trimmed, and a specialised brush to help keep the dog’s teeth cleaned. Dog grooming tools and supplies should be kept inside a plastic storage box for ease of storage and use.

Things To Consider When Moving To A New City

Moving to a new city is such an exciting time, but while so many get busy with the pre-move planning, not a massive amount of thought goes into what happens once there.

Before you even decided to move, you’ve probably taken into consideration the important issues like work opportunities, schooling, crime rates, and cost of living, but there are other things to consider that can make your time in a new city enjoyable or miserable.

Depending on how familiar you are with your new home, you may already know some places around to get you started, but you’ll still want to get to know the local neighborhood as much as possible and explore all that this new city has to offer you so you can make the most out of your time there.

Here are some things you should consider when moving to a new city that will make life easier once there.

The Language:

Obviously this only applies if the place you’re moving to is in another country where another language is spoken. Although most big cities around the world do have a good majority of people who speak English, and you can generally find the things you need by asking in English, if you’re going to be living there for any period of time longer than 6 months, learning at least some basics in the local language will always serve you well and help you feel more at home and actually get to truly know your new city.

Food & Drink:

One of the best things about being in a new city for any length of time, is that you get to try different types of food that you may not get at home. So, taking some time to, not only learn where the trendy places are, but actually get out and find some local delights that may become your favorites is always recommended – you never know what you may stumble onto. You could end up finding the best coffee you’ve ever tasted, or discover a seafood dish you’ve never tried before.

Health & Emergency Services:

As much as no one likes to think that they may need to call the emergency services for anything, it’s better to be safe and prepared for every eventuality. It takes just a few minutes to jot down the local numbers you need in case anything goes wrong – and it doesn’t even have to be anything major; you may just need a locksmith, or a dentist who’s open 24hrs and you don’t want to suffer from toothache all weekend, but it’s still better than not having the numbers when you need them most.

Friends & Social Life:

If you’re moving to a new city as a younger single person, it may prove easier to meet other people simply by going out to bars or arranging meet ups through groups you find online. If you’re moving with a family or are just past the party days, then you can still have a booming social life, but you may just have to put a bit more effort into it than simply showing up. You can check out local and expat groups in your area and narrow down by interests to see what’s going on. Parenting groups, sports, cooking, book clubs, and even craft groups are all just a few ideas you can try out. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and look for things you’re truly interested in, then you’ll find it easier to meet people and will actually start enjoying your new home.

Five Reasons Why Dogs Make The Perfect Pets

What is it about our four legged friends that we love so much? Could it be their warm and approachable nature, their unwavering loyalty to their owners or the sense of child like fun that they bring out in us? If you’re currently thinking about getting a dog but haven’t quite made up your mind then, this helpful guide is for you.

You’ll Have A Friend For Life

Dogs are incredibly intelligent creatures and often learn their behaviour directly from their owners. A good natured, kind and well behaved dog often belongs to someone who takes the time to look after their pet, training them not to bark aggressively or jump up and gives them the respect that the animal deserves. In short, if you are willing to put the effort in you will gain a friend for life with unwavering loyalty and with whom you share an innate, unbreakable bond.

They Keep Their Owners Active

Nothing gets a dog more excited than walkies! Well, except maybe the sudden appearance of food or a tasty treat. Depending on what breed you choose it’ll need a certain amount of exercise every single day, and larger breeds often need to be walked twice a day. A dog will no doubt keep you fit, healthy and on the go thanks to early morning starts and twilight strolls as well as casual playtime.

Dogs Are Great For House Security

We’ve all heard those funny stories about nervous mail carriers, unexpected deliveries and a barking, noisy dog. Responsible owners will have a sign on the door or gate stating ‘beware of the dog’ to make visitors aware that the house is guarded. Not every dog is cut out for security mind, many will run when the doorbell rings, but those who are do it extremely well. A large, growling animal will deter strangers from trying to gain access to your property as well as making burglars think twice.

Pets Help To Teach Children Responsibility

It’s always lovely to see children and animals playing together as it looks peaceful, innocent and somehow just feels right. Many dogs are wonderful with families and instinctively know to be kind, gentle and patient with small children. However, it’s best to get a dog when children are young so that dog and child grow together, are used to each other and are not threatened by the sudden appearance of a new family member. Older children and teens should be able to pour out food and water for your pet, brush their fur alone and help to shop for the best dental chews for your pup which are vital for healthy canine teeth.

They Are Amazing For Your Mental Health

Recent studies have shown that any pet massively improves the symptoms of depression and other mental health issues as well as being a great source of emotional comfort. A mature dog who has an incredible bond with its owner will often curl up next to them, lay its head in their lap or act silly to try and make them smile and what could be better than that?
