You will be surprised that 20% of Americans revealed in a survey that they get less than six hours of sleep at night. It is shocking, as it’s recommended that you get at least eight hours of sleep a night. But a lot of people struggle to get enough sleep and don’t know why it’s happening. They wake up every day and find themselves lacking in concentration and feeling exhausted. Here’re eight ways you can say goodbye to sleepless nights and feel ready for the day ahead.

pexels-photoPexels

Sleep with no light

If you want to ensure you are getting the required amount of sleep at night, you need to sleep with no light in the room. When light enters your bedroom, it can make your eyes open which will wake you up in the middle of the night. Therefore, you need to buy curtains which stop any light from getting into your bedroom. You can get blackout curtains which are ideal for ensuring you can have a good night’s sleep while it’s still light. If you find the light in the hallway keeps you awake at night, you may want to keep your bedroom door shut so that you can get more sleep.

640px-Roll-down_curtain_2Image Source

Buy a new mattress

Another reason why you may not be getting enough sleep is that your mattress has seen better days. If you buy a mattress which lacks in quality, it will only have a short lifespan. It will leave you feeling uncomfortable in the night, meaning you will keep moving around in bed and waking up. You will also wake up with a bad back which will leave you feeling uncomfortable during the next day. You may need something more secure such as a memory foam mattress which will help you to get a better night’s sleep. Check websites for a great selection of the top memory foam mattresses on the market today.

Make sure your home isn’t too hot

You can also say goodbye to sleepless nights by making sure the temperature in your home is not too hot. If you are sweating while you’re trying to sleep, you will keep waking up and end up not getting enough sleep. You should set your temperature to ensure it stays at a colder temperature during the night. As we discuss here, you should check your bedding to keep cool in the summer. Use a lower tog duvet during the summer to keep cool. You could also get a ceiling fan which you could turn on for a short period at night. Just make you set it to turn off. Otherwise, you will get a huge electric bill! Open your bedroom window slightly if you know it’s going to be a hot night. If it’s going to be cold, make sure you wear warmer pajamas and use a higher tog duvet to keep warm. You don’t want to disturb your sleep as you are freezing.

Avoid sleeping in

Another reason why you are not getting enough sleep at night is that you are staying in bed longer in the morning. It can disturb your sleeping pattern, meaning you are waking up earlier and not being able to go back to sleep at night. It means you stay in bed till 10 am to make up for the lack of sleep. Try and avoid staying in bed past 8 am, so that your body is ready for sleep later on in the evening. As this article reveals, you should go for a daytime nap rather than have an extra sleep in the morning if you have had a late night. Otherwise, you will struggle to go to sleep when you head to bed.

Summer Is Coming! Here’s How To Have The Perfect Family BBQ

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

You’ve probably had dozens of barbecues before, and they’re usually great, or average. The warm weather can quickly drain your energy, the food gets hard to cook and relaxing inside becomes more and more appealing.

That being said, barbecues are a great way for you and your family to get some outdoor time, while enjoying a delicious meal. Summer is the best time of the year for them, and it’s important to make the most of the warm weather. You know it’ll be gone as quick as it arrives!

So, with the warmer weather just around the corner, here’s your checklist to throwing the perfect family barbecue. Have a read down this post when you’re planning things, to make sure you don’t miss a trick!

The cooking

5535263327_e9c6e3cd7e_zFlickr

Sure, you could run down to the store and pick up one of those cheap disposable barbecues, or you could do things right. Think about the cost of buying multiple disposable ones each year; it can add up! Plus, they’re just annoying to light and setup. They have no protection against the breeze, and that can put your fire out as quickly as it got started.

Think about what you need to do to enjoy a barbecue. You need to cook quickly, before the warm weather disappears. You and your family also don’t want to be sat out in the sun too long, for obvious reasons. Cooking and eating fast is key here.

You also need to cook lots of food at once, so everyone gets fed. Don’t let one of your family members go hungry while everyone else munches down! That would be extremely unfair.

So, how do you combine both these issues into one solution? The answer is a full, proper barbecue – as big as you can get. That being said, you don’t want something too confusing. Ease of use is key when it comes to your enjoyment of the occasion.

You should be looking at full sized outdoor grills, that can cook a lot of food and are quick to get going. Most modern grills possess these traits in spades – you could read this review of the Kamado Joe Classic Grill to see what I mean.

You want to start with a clean, well-oiled grill, so the food does not stick. Scrub it with a grill brush then with some vegetable or olive oil. Don’t flip the meat constantly, either. Once will do. You risk not letting it cook thoroughly if you’re constantly moving it.

The food

food-chicken-meat-outdoorsPexels

When you’re planning the food, think variety. You have to have a bit of everything so you can appeal to everyone’s tastes. Start with the meat. Burgers and sausages are good staples, and think kebabs, steaks and drumsticks too. Make sure you buy a good mix of spicy, and non-spicy. Not everyone is partial to that taste!

You should also keep an eye on those side dishes. A burger in a bun is fine, but it’s the sides that make it special. Think couscous, garlic bread or potato salad. Don’t overdo the sides, though. Keep them minimal and put focus on the meats.

Next, you need to factor in some desserts. This is a perfect time to bake together as a family to produce some buns or cakes. Again, like the sides, you don’t want to overdo it. Meat is expensive, and desserts and sides will fill people up before they can finish it! Keep it simple. Fairy cakes, ice cream and fruit would be good choices for you.

Don’t forget your vegetarian family members, either! Be careful if you’re cooking meat and Quorn on the same barbecue. You could possibly buy a small disposable, just to cook the vegetarian food separately.

Lastly, there are your drinks! You’ll want to buy in some cheap water, cola and lemonade; they’re staples of any gathering, especially a summer one. The adults will perhaps want some beer in a cooler, or maybe an alcoholic punch would be a good idea? Sangria is rather easy for you to make, and is a tasty treat that will go down well.

The entertainment

water-fight-442257_640Pixabay

Your perfect family barbecue won’t be complete without some form of entertainment! Obviously, you don’t want to be spending a lot, but it’s quite easy to keep people occupied while the food cooks.

Perhaps you could choose a party theme. This will extend to your food, and to your decor. It must be a theme that goes perfectly with an outdoor setting. Hawaiian, surf or sports would be good choices in this situation. Consider playing dress-up, or wearing masks.

Then, you should build a basic music playlist. This should be all-inclusive, and not too distracting. Think relaxing dance songs, and maybe some acoustic tunes. You shouldn’t just factor yourself in; think of your family’s tastes!

Next, because your barbecue will be based outdoors (hopefully!), cook up some outdoor games and activities. The kids will be occupied with some sports equipment, like a football, tennis ball or badminton rackets. As for the adults, card and trivia games would be good for you to include, which can be played once the food is over.

You should also consider putting on a water fight, weather permitting. Be sure to store plenty of spare towels for guests, and ask people before you drop water on their head! You could build a slip n’ slide, buy in hundreds of water bombs, or get some cheap plastic toy guns. This will make the day more memorable and fun for the kids, and give the adults something to laugh at!

The result

If you followed this post, then congratulations! You’ve created an awesome family barbecue, and a lot of family memories. And that’s the most important thing you can do this summer. Your family is the most precious part of your life, and enjoying your time with them is one of the most rewarding things you can do.

So make the most of that warm sun, and enjoy a wonderful meal to boot! Leave a comment down below with your own barbecue tips, tricks and memories.

3 Home Maintenance Tasks To Do Before Summer

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

For many of us, summer is our favorite time of year. We can enjoy the warmer weather, spend more time outside and go on vacation. Families also get to spend more time together as they take time off from school and work. It’s hardly surprising that so many of us look forward to it each year. But before you start buying your new summer wardrobe, there are some maintenance tasks you need to prioritize. Getting your home in full working order before summer arrives will make it more comfortable and functional. So tackle the following tasks to make this the best summer ever.

14864677395_855772c448_zPicture

Defrost your freezer

Your freezer will be used a lot during the summer from making ice to keeping ice cream cool. Open your freezer and see what condition it is in. If the walls are covered in thick blocks of ice, you could be losing efficiency as well as valuable space. To rectify this, you need to defrost your freezer. Remove it’s contents and turn the appliance off. You can then use a hair dryer or hot water to start melting the buildup of ice. Use towels to catch the excess water and use a scraper to remove any remaining ice. You can then start refilling it with your family’s favorite summer treats.

Repair or replace your A/C

Your home’s air conditioning will help your family to stay cool during the hottest times of the day. The cold relief it provides can make your home more comfortable while keeping your family healthy. So before the temperatures start to rise, you need to check that your A/C unit is working correctly. If it doesn’t seem to be as effective as it used to be, it might need a thorough clean. It might just be clogged up with dust and debris. If it still doesn’t work, you need to contact a local HVAC Company to assist you. They should be able to repair certain components or recommend replacing the unit altogether. It’s better to have it repaired or replaced now than go without during a heat wave.

6200965992_2280c40ce2_zPicture

Clean out your pool

If you’re planning on hosting pool parties or want to teach your kids how to swim, you need to have a clean pool. You can hire a pool cleaning service to do this for you, or you can make the effort to do it yourself. Remove the covers from your pool and use a net to remove any leaves or debris from the surface. Then use a long handled brush to clean the walls and floor of your pool. You should also check the pump and filter to ensure they are working at an optimal level. Checking that the chlorine and other chemical levels in your pool is also beneficial. This should give you a clean and inviting pool that’s just waiting to be used.

Having these tasks completed now will allow you to enjoy the summer months as soon as they arrive. Remember to stock up on high-factor sunscreen, insect repellent and sunglasses for your family. That way they can have fun in the sun while being protected from bugs and UV rays.

Tips to Combat Heat Stroke and Sunburn

With the extreme heat in Florida, preventing heat stroke and sunburn is such an important subject. Please take a moment to read these tips and also check out more information on FoundCare Heat Safety.
 Dr. Katina Bonaparte
(West Palm Beach, FL) – Friday, May 27th kicks off the Memorial Day weekend holiday, but it’s also National Heat Safety Awareness Day, a time when Florida residents need to be particularly aware of the dangers present when enjoying the beach, barbecues and other outdoor activities.
Dr. Katina Bonaparte, Medical Director at FoundCare’s Federally Qualified Health Center in West Palm Beach, says prevention is the best way to stay safe and have fun over Memorial Day weekend and all summer long. Following are some of her best practices and tips for preventing heat stroke and sunburn:
Heat stroke: Heat stroke is the last stage of overheating, which can start with cramps and then become heat exhaustion. Symptoms to watch for include headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.
The best ways to prevent heat stroke include:
  • Avoid outdoor activity in the middle of the day, when temperatures are highest
  • Hydrate frequently with water and sports drinks to replace electrolytes, and supervise children to make sure they do the same
  • Wear loose, lightweight and light-colored clothing
  • Avoid drinks containing alcohol or caffeine when outside, as these accelerate dehydration
  • Never leave children or pets in cars, even for a minute (Dr. Bonaparte suggests leaving a baby bottle or diaper bag in the front of the car as an extra visual reminder that a child is in the back seat.)
If you think you or someone else is experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately, seek shelter inside an air-conditioned building or in the shade, apply ice wrapped in a towel or article of clothing to armpits or neck, hydrate with water or a sports drink and spray the skin with cool water and sit in front of a fan.
Sunburn: “There’s strong evidence linking sun exposure to skin aging and skin cancer, so it’s important to use sunscreen every day in Florida,” said Dr. Bonaparte. However, spending extra time outdoors at the beach or enjoying other summer activities means adding a few extra steps:
  • Make sure to use a sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher, that is also labeled “broad spectrum” to protect against both UVA and UVB rays
  • Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas 30 minutes before you go out and then every two hours. “Even though a lot of sunscreens say they’re ‘water-resistant,’ you should reapply if you’ve been in the water,” Dr. Bonaparte explained.
“Prevention is the key to enjoying a safe and fun summer,” summarized Dr. Bonaparte. “We all have very busy lives and we’re constantly multitasking. So the trick is to practice a few basic prevention tactics to prepare yourself and your children for the summer ahead.”

DIY And Home Maintenance Tasks To Do Now!

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Spring is in full swing, and before we know it, summer will be here. Now is the time to get those DIY and maintenance tasks ticked off. Here are some ideas to get your home shipshape in time for summer.

In the garden

Spring is all about clearing out the garden and preparing for long, lazy days in the sunshine. Before summer arrives, take some time to get out into the backyard and do some maintenance work. Start by clearing out your flowerbeds, weeding, and tidying up any trash. Wait for a dry day and mow the lawn. Avoid cutting the grass too short, as this can slow regrowth. If you’re a keen gardener, now is the time to sow your seeds or grow your own vegetables. Follow planting instructions on seed packets or look for tips online. Jetwash patios and decking areas. Get your outdoor furniture out of the garage and give it a wipe down.

Once you’ve done the menial jobs, you can start thinking about adding color and finishing touches. Add free-standing lanterns and outdoor fairy lights for ambience. Or create a chill out zone to retreat to at the end of the day. Invest in a wicker sofa set or lay some giant floor cushions and bean bags on the decking with material drapes and LED candles.

Odd jobs

Have you not quite finished painting the spare room? Do you still need to unpack boxes in the study? Is the kitchen waiting for a new door? Spring is a fantastic time to get odd jobs sorted around the house. If you’re busy or you don’t trust your DIY skills, enlist the help of a local handyman. Ticking off even the smallest jobs will make a massive difference.

Air conditioning checks

If your air conditioning units are due an MOT, now is the time to get in touch with your air conditioning engineer and book a service. It’s essential to arrange regular checks to make sure your system is working properly and reduce the risk of problems, such as leaks.

Spring cleaning

If you’ve been meaning to tackle the garage or the loft for months, don’t put it off any longer. Take a weekend to go through each room and create separate piles. Set aside things you want to keep. Make a mound to give to charity or start putting together items for a yard sale. Once you’ve sorted out your stuff, put away anything that you want to keep. When you’ve successfully decluttered your house, give it a thorough clean from top to bottom. Dust the furniture, vacuum throughout and give the kitchen and bathroom a good scrub.

Spring is an ideal time to tick off essential maintenance tasks and odd DIY jobs. Make a list and work your way through it. If you’re stuck for time, call in a local handyman or get friends and family involved. If you put in some elbow grease now, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the summer sunshine.

Why Dogs Make For The Best Of Family Pets

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

This might seem like an odd article if you’re already a dog lover. You know very well why you want a dog. They’re absolutely fantastic companions. They can be your best friends, your trusty companions and the best cuddle after work. But this is a list of other ways that dogs can be the absolute best choice of pets. We look at the benefits beyond just the obvious. Great tools for convincing just about anyone!

dog-425067_640Pic sourced at Pixabay

Great for your emotional health

You probably already know just how great a companion a dog can be. Unwaveringly loyal and with most breeds being affectionate to a fault. It’s no wonder that doctors have long acknowledged the mental health benefits of having a dog. They can seriously help people who suffer from mental disorders like depression. All by being their natural, highly lovable fluffy selves.

Get you fit

It’s not just your mental and emotional health they can help out with either. As vetstreet.com states, they can also help you get physically fit. All responsible dog owners know that looking after a dog means taking them out for at least two walks a day. If you have trouble fitting in time for exercise, that means walking for you, too. A great way to burn some of that fat and promote cardiovascular health.

bernese-mountain-dog-1205918_640Pic sourced at Pixabay

Long lifespans

We all know that, at some point, we have to say goodbye to our pets. It can be truly heart-breaking when it does happen. That’s another reason why dogs excel over most other kinds of pets. They tend to live a lot longer. So long as you look after their health with things like pet insurance as gocompare.com suggests. If you do, you can rest easy knowing you’ve lived a long happy life with them.

Great with kids

Dogs are the go-to family pet. It’s why kids and adults alike (and possibly you) find excuses to convince disbelievers all the time. Despite being hugely loyal to who they consider the ‘pack leader’, they have lots of love to spare. They have tons of energy, too. If your kids are looking to play, they’ll always find a willing partner in the dog. Same for anyone who wants a snuggle.

mother-father-and-children-washing-dog-labrador-retriever-outside-in-the-fresh-air-725x483Pic sourced at Public Domain Image

You can do good

What better reason is there to get a dog than to know you’re helping one out? Humanesociety.org states there are literal millions of dogs waiting to go to a good home. Those that don’t often don’t have a future in head of them, at risk of being put down. Helping a dog is not only your way of doing good and rescuing a life. It’s also a way of adding to your family. For cheaper than usual, too, might I add.

There you have it, just about all the reason you need to convince those pesky members of your family to get a dog. Not only will it keep you and others in good mental and physical shape. It can also be a way to keep the kids busy and even make an impact in the world.

“Queen of Katwe” is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. Directed by Mira Nair (“Monsoon Wedding”) from a screenplay by William Wheeler (“The Hoax”) based on the book by Tim Crothers, “Queen of Katwe” is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher (“The Darjeeling Limited”) and John Carls (“Where the Wild Things Are”) with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers. When Phiona meets Robert Katende (Oyelowo), a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated. Chess requires a good deal of concentration, strategic thinking and risk taking, all skills which are applicable in everyday life, and Katende hopes to empower youth with the game. Phiona is impressed by the intelligence and wit the game requires and immediately shows potential. Recognizing Phiona’s natural aptitude for chess and the fighting spirit she’s inherited from her mother, Katende begins to mentor her, but Harriet is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. As Phiona begins to succeed in local chess competitions, Katende teaches her to read and write in order to pursue schooling. She quickly advances through the ranks in tournaments, but breaks away from her family to focus on her own life. Her mother eventually realizes that Phiona has a chance to excel and teams up with Katende to help her fulfill her extraordinary potential, escape a life of poverty and save her family. My Favorite Apps For Life After Weight Loss Surgery

I highly recommend the following 2 apps to track food and water.

Baritastic is great for tracking everything you eat as it tracks not only calories but protein, carbs, etc.

baritastic

One REALLY important thing to remember when you have bariatric surgery is to chew small bites for 30 seconds, wait 1 minute between bites, wait 30 minutes after eating to drink, and wait 15 minutes after drinking to eat. Baritastic also has a great timer that times all that for you.
Screenshot_20160510-130356

Water Drink Reminder– You can set it for any interval you want so I have it set to remind me to drink every 20 minutes IF I’m behind in my water for the day. So if I start the day drinking say 8 oz then it won’t remind me for a while until I should have had more than 8 oz by that time of the day. So it sort of paces me if that makes sense. I had to put a fake weight in it though to get it to track 64 oz of water since that is my daily goal. With my real weight I had to drink more according to the app.

13210907_10153495627451770_2033078546_oSee the bar on top? So the triangle on the bottom moves throughout the day so you know how much you should have had to drink to be on track for the day. You can set your awake hours so it only reminds you and tracks your drinking during those hours. Mine is set to start at 8 and go until 11. And my kids get a kick out of the alarm sound I picked (water being poured).
