Store Cupboard Beauty Products You Didn’t Even Know You Had

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

The people who market beauty and cosmetic products will have you believing that you need to invest big money in products that work. When you look on the shelves of beauty aisles you’ll see hundreds of products that claim to be the best for you. These will all come with their own varying price tags – and benefits! The problem is that buying all of these products means that the cost will soon add up, which can put it above budget for some people. Rather than worry about this too much it is worth considering which homemade beauty products you could make use of. These are often items you have already in your kitchen, so they cost next to nothing to take advantage of.

Skin

Everyone wants healthy, glowing skin. It can just be hard to know how to get it. Without a doubt the biggest weapon to help promote healthy skin is water. So many of us are guilty of not drink enough water each day. This will leave your skin feeling dry and looking lifeless. If you can up your water intake to 6-8 glasses each day, you’ll notice a massive difference.

Another thing you can look at is making homemade face masks. Honey is great for our skin, although it can get a little messy. Leave it on for a few minutes and then wash it off. You can also mix this with rolled oats if you want to exfoliate your skin at the same time. Sea salt is also fantastic for using as an exfoliate replacement. Just beware that this can dry out your skin so you’ll need to moisturize too!

If you’ve wondered how to remove sun spots then you might be interested to know that things like lemon juice or raw onion can help. You apply this direct to the skin where the dark skin is. Leave for a few minutes and then rinse off. You should moisturize afterwards and this can be repeated a few times a week.

Hair

Your hair can really benefit from items in your cupboard so make sure you take advantage of this. For example, you can use a whisked (uncooked egg) to condition your hair. Use it like a mask and leave on wet hair for a few minutes before you rinse off. Mayonnaise is also good for this although it is a little messier. When you are rinsing your hair it is also worth giving it a rinse in beer every now and then as this helps to promote shine and give your hair a healthy look.

Hair_wash_with_shampooWikimedia

If you have hair that is particularly damaged then an avocado can help. Mash one of these and mix with an egg. It will create a thick substance which can then be placed on your hair. Leave this on wet hair for at least 30 minutes and wash off. You’ll need to give it a good rinse as otherwise essential oils could be left behind and they’ll make your hair look and feel greasy.

Nails

If you have brittle nails or nails that tend not to grow then you will want to help this. Cubes of gelatin are fantastic for nail growth and can really help to keep your nails looking and feeling nice and healthy. Not only that but it helps to make your nails strong and this encourages them to grow.

Eating well in general will also help your nails, especially a diet that is rich in protein.

Planning the Perfect Kid’s Party: What to Do

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

So, you’re planning a kid’s party. No matter what you’ve been told, planning a kid’s party does not need to be stressful. Let’s face it; kids can be easily pleased most of the time anyway. You spend hundreds on presents for Christmas, and toddlers are more concerned with playing with the boxes. You could save a fortune if you just bought them boxes! Anyway, let’s get back on track. Read on to plan the perfect kid’s party!

Invitations

The first thing you need to do is give out the invitations well in advance. This will ensure that parents make sure they don’t plan anything else and that all of your kid’s closest friends can come. The invitations don’t need to be formal; a simple text message or email may suffice. However, it can help to send a save the date card so that they don’t get mixed up.

Guests

Here’s one big dilemma that parents face; do you invite everybody in your kid’s class, or just their closest friends? It depends on the kind of party you think your child will most enjoy. Also, bear in mind you’ll likely spend more money on food and entertainment with more kids. With just a few, you could have the party in your house/garden. With everybody in the class, you’ll need a proper party venue.

To Surprise or Not to Surprise?

Should you surprise your  child, or tell them they can have a party in advance? This depends whether or not your child likes surprises. It would be awfully embarrassing if you got to the venue and all of your child’s friends shouted ‘surprise!’, only for your child to burst into tears.  However, kids are usually fine with surprises and will actually be even more excited for the party this way. Perhaps keeping it a secret from them will also save you from constant questions, such as ‘is it the day of my party yet?’.

Food

You won’t need as much food as you think to feed the kids. They’ll be so busy with playing that they’ll probably forget about it anyway! However, you should still make sure you feed them. One sandwich, bag of crisps, and some fruit should be well enough between each child. Send them home with some cake too!

Themes

To make a kid’s party even more exciting, think of having a theme. It could be Disney characters, or themed around your child’s favorite cartoon. Make sure you pick decor and tell people to dress to reflect this.

Transport

Getting to the party should be fun for your child too. A cheap limo service in NJ from Bergenlimo.com could be just the answer. You can hire a party bus perfect for your child and their closest friends to make their way to the party. You can then meet them there!

Entertainment

Finally, entertainment. Kids love to make up their own games and use their imagination, so you won’t need to worry too much about this either. Simply put together a playlist and a few party games for the kids to enjoy. You could even hire a clown or balloon artist if your budget stretches that far.

Now you know what to do, you can start the planning process!

How To Plan A Harry Potter Theme Night For Your Kids

If you have kids who love all things magic, you might want to give them a night to remember. A Harry Potter theme night is the perfect excuse to enjoy some quality time with your kids. If you are anything like me, you will love planning a theme night. Doing something a little different with your kids now and then is an ideal way to keep them busy. You don’t need a reason to plan a super fun night. Of course, these ideas work well for birthday parties, but you can try them whenever you want. Here is how you can plan a Harry Potter theme night for your kids.

Decorations

Decorating your home like Hogwarts might sound hard and expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. You might not be able to get moving portraits or floating candles, but you can get some cute fairy lights and hang them from your ceiling. Sometimes, you can get fairy lights shaped like real candles. These lights would be perfect for your magical style decor. You could also get some Harry Potter movie posters and put them around your living room. If you don’t want to buy posters, you can print out pictures of the cast online.

Costumes

You can make the event fun by dressing up with your kids. All you need to wear is a black dress and a witches hat. With those two simple items, you can look like Professor Minerva McGonagall in no time at all. If you have a son, he will likely want to be Harry Potter. You can make a wizard outfit out of some old black material. Sew a Hogwarts badge onto the material for the full effect. You could also consider buying special Harry Potter costumes online, but these tend to be expensive.

Wizard treats

No wizard event is complete without some delicious wizard treats. Your kids can eat the magic candy that Ron and Harry eat in the movies. Candy Favorites, such as Bertie Botts every flavor beans, are easy to buy online. In fact, you can get loads of different Harry Potter style treats for your kids. You can play games with the treats by hiding them around the room for your kids to find. Send your kids on a magical mission and tell them that they have ten minutes to find all the treats.

Magical games

Every kid adores magic. There is something about magic that fascinates young children. You will make your theme night extra special if you have a few tricks up your sleeve. You can convince your kids that you are a magician if you learn a few simple magic tricks. You can buy magic trick sets that do all the hard work for you. That way, all you need to do is learn the tricks. It might take a while to learn each trick, but seeing the look of joy on your kids’ faces when they think you are magic will be worth it. You should also make sure that you plan some games for your children. If you have learned some tricks, you can teach them to your kids.

The movies

Watching the Harry Potter movies is the perfect end to your theme night. You have likely already seen all the films, but you can have a movie marathon starting from the first film, and watching the series. Remember, some of the more recent movies might not be suitable for young viewers. The great thing about Harry Potter is that as the characters mature, the movies mature too. If you have young kids, you should make sure that each film is okay for them to watch. If not, it might be wise to watch the early films and leave the recent ones for another time.

How To Book A Great Vacation On A Budget

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

When you’ve got kids, everything has to be planned and organised with military precision. The younger they are, the harder it is. Things like toilet breaks and meal times have to be factored in when all you want to do is get to the store on time. Planning a vacation can be one hundred times worse to work out!

Kids, bless ‘em, can make absolutely everything a challenge. Everything can be substantially more expensive when you need to cater for children too. If they are in school, you have to book your vacation during the semester breaks, and that comes at a premium cost. If they are pre-schoolers, you need to make sure you have family rooms for changing diapers and facilities for warming baby’s bottle. Meals need to come earlier in the day for little ones too.

It can be really hard to book the right holiday for all the family. Financially, you need to make sure there is enough left over after all the booking to cater for kids needing extra drinks and snacks. They will probably want to go on rides and visit expensive, family oriented theme parks too. All of this will eat into your vacation fund. There are a few personal finance software programs that can help lay everything out so you can get a better idea on what you need to have set aside. It’s possible you will need to make some savings on your booking to ensure you have plenty left for everything else.

There are a couple of ways you can search for discounts on hotels. Some places offer a secret hotel service where you are guaranteed a certain city on certain dates, but the actual hotel address isn’t finalized until after booking. This can save a fortune if you are not too bothered about big brand hotels or certain facilities being included. Alternatively, pick a last minute deal. This may leave everything to chance, including your holiday destination! It’s a great way to have an exciting and very cheap vacation. With a young family, this type of booking may not be entirely practical.

2099447856_d103404620_zThanks to Flickr for the pic

When you are packing for a last minute holiday, don’t leave the packing to the last minute! Have an idea of the kind of heat you are generally expecting  and pack for that. The finite details may not be too affecting of what you would need to pack. With a family you tend to overpack to cater for every conceivable outcome, so you should be ok. Rushing a last minute packing could lead to disaster if you forget any of the essentials.

Wherever your budget family vacation takes you, it could be you need some shots or immunizations. With children, you cannot risk visiting countries that suggest vaccinations be taken. Check out a list of those that are higher risk so you can choose to eliminate those if necessary. Other last minute booking considerations include currency exchanges and language barriers. Most of us can find apps to help us with the language, but occasionally, we find it difficult to exchange our currency at a favorable rate in time for a last minute vacation. Finally, don’t forget all the passports!

Everything You Need to Know About Coffee

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Coffee is one of the world’s most popular drinks. It’s really something quite magical when you think about it; a drink that helps us feel alive and alert enough to conquer the world! Or at least to conquer our workload for that day. Many people can’t function properly without a cup of coffee to start their day off. Whether you feel the same about coffee or not, it has an interesting history. Also, science has proven that it can be good for us. That’s right; drinking coffee could make us healthier individuals. I am not a doctor so this post is not meant to give medical advice.  Please consult your own physician.  Want to know more? Of course you do! Read on…

Where Does Coffee Come From?

The first thing we’ll start with is where coffee comes from. Unlike the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, coffee did not magically appear like the magic beans (although I’m sure you’ll agree that they are magical beans).

Coffee seeds are planted, and it takes around 4 years for a tree to grow that will produce the beans. That’s a long wait! However, they will only grow into the type of coffee that we know and love today when planted in certain areas; called the ‘coffee/bean belt’. These areas include Kenya, Colombia, and Brazil. You can also find great coffee in Costa Rica. The fruit of the coffee tree is called a cherry (confusing I know), and when that turns a deep red color it can be harvested. Don’t get the coffee cherry confused with a fruit cherry!

The coffee cherry is always harvested by hand, and it can take 4000 beans to make just 1 pound of roasted coffee. Once harvested, there’s milling and polishing, grading and sorting. This is where the beans are refined and any nasty beans are removed to make a quality cup. Coffee is then shipped all over the world!

Did you know that there are even people employed to make sure the coffee is of a high standard? They’ll use sight, smell, and taste to ensure that the beans are the highest quality. Beans are then roasted to transform them into the brown color that we know and love. Beans can then be ground, but it depends on the method in which the coffee is going to be made.

The Benefits of Coffee

Coffee is good for us! It’s true; you don’t need to feel guilty about your morning brew. Let’s take a look at some of the most notable benefits:

  • Coffee contains lots of antioxidants and nutrients. In fact, many people get more antioxidants from coffee than anywhere else! Although you can get antioxidants and nutrients from food, many people don’t eat the right foods to get enough of them. This is why they get the most out of coffee.
  • Coffee can help the liver, especially if you drink alcohol. If you’ve had a heavy night don’t hesitate to have a cup of coffee.
  • Coffee can lessen feelings of depression, and has been linked with a reduce in suicide. If you’re feeling low, a cup of Joe could be just what you need.
  • Just a whiff of coffee can help people to feel less stressed. Try having a sniff and see what you think.
  • Coffee can help us to feel happier. I know from personal experience!
  • Coffee can make Parkinson’s disease symptoms less prominent.
  • Coffee can improve your athletic performance by giving you a buzz before you work out. It can also help you to burn more fat as it increases your metabolic rate.
  • Coffee can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are less likely to develop with regular consumption of coffee.
  • Coffee could even lower the risk of certain types of cancer. It’s said to be specifically helpful with skin cancer in women.

What better reason to get your coffee on?

Is Coffee Bad for Us at All?

You’ve probably heard people say that coffee is bad for us and we shouldn’t drink it. But how can that be true, especially with all of the benefits listed above?!

Now, while coffee is good for us in the right amounts, too much of it can be bad for us. It’s the same with anything; too much of it and we can hinder the results. One or two cups of coffee in the day is fine to perk us up, but try to drink green tea for the rest of the day. Too much caffeine can actually increase our cortisol levels, making us feel more stressed. Cortisol also makes us hold onto belly fat, so it can be bad for weight loss too.

The moral of the story is, coffee is good for us if you watch your consumption.

Interesting Coffee Facts

Want to know some interesting coffee facts you’ve probably never heard before?

  • Sometimes, coffee shops use a fake coffee scent to entice shoppers. That fresh coffee smell you get when you open a new tub of coffee? That may have been injected into it too!
  • People in Europe originally used to refer to coffee as Arabian Wine.
  • In every scene of the film ‘Fight Club’, there’s a Starbucks cup present. Of course Starbucks were fine with the advertising!
  • Two of the worlds oldest recorded cats used to drink coffee every day. They lived to be 34 and 38. They had the same owner, and were also fed eggs, bacon, and broccoli.
  • Some legends suggest that coffee was first founded by the Ethiopians, who realised that their goats started to dance after eating coffee berries.
  • African tribes used to mix coffee berries with fat, to make little edible energy balls.
  • Hawaii is the only US state that can grow coffee.
  • Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world after oil.
  • George Washington invented coffee in 1906, but not the president you’re thinking of! A Belgian man living in Guatemala by the same name.

I bet you didn’t realise that coffee was so interesting, huh? Now you can share this information with your fellow coffee lovers and enlighten them. Enjoy!

Disclosure:  I received the product mentioned below to facilitate my review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away Vacuum ReviewIf you have animals, kids or both you know how messy a house can get.  And how quickly it can get that way.  I have tried several other vacuums before that got us by, but nothing seemed to clean up 100% of the mess or even all of the pet hair.  We have a black lab mix who sheds ALL OVER THE PLACE!  I swear I could make a new dog with the fur that comes off our dog on a daily basis!

I was recently sent a Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away Vacuum and I was super excited! They say it’s able to provide uninterrupted floor to ceiling cleaning and it can easily clean under furniture, above the floor, and all those other hard to reach places around your home. I was sold!

Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 7.27.39 PMOut of the box, the vacuum cleaner needed to be assembled. Thankfully, no tools are required. They are easily latched together into the one of the three switchable modes – upright, lift-away canister and rolling canister. Switching mode only takes a few seconds and again no tools are required. Score!

I was quite impressed with the cleaning power of this Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away Vacuum. It rolls so nicely and the suction power was great. I was able to go over a single area just once or twice, instead over going over it a few times to be sure it got everything. I’m in love! I’m so grateful for the large capacity, bagless canister. It holds more dirt which means less frequent emptying. It’s also transparent so you can see when it’s filled. Opens at the top and bottom for easy disposal of dirt and debris.

sharkI have to say that I am loving my Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away Vacuum more and more every day.  There are so many ways to use it and no matter what space I am trying to vacuum, the Shark gets in there and gets the job done.  The suction is great even when the canister is filling up.  And bonus for me, my girls both think it is so sleek and cool looking that they want to help me vacuum!

These Symptoms of Heart Problems Could Be Life-saving

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

We all must take care of ourselves as we age, both for our children and ourselves. As we live longer, the chances of developing health problems increase. One of the parts of our bodies that can grow more fragile as we age is our hearts. But even younger people are at risk of heart problems. It’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms to watch out for that could indicate possible heart problems. There is much more to it than chest pain or shortness of breath. Many symptoms could turn out to be harmless, and even many diagnosable heart problems can be successfully treated. But you should still be sure to visit your doctor if you frequently experience any of the following symptoms.

12192161504_34544b2f38_zMattysFlicks

Heart Attack Symptoms

You might not know that women are more likely to experience heart attack symptoms unrelated to chest pain or discomfort. Although women might feel pain in their chest, there are a number of other symptoms that could indicate a heart attack. These include nausea and vomiting, sweating and shortness of breath. You could also feel discomfort or pain in your right arm or your neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or abdomen. Another symptom of a possible heart attack is feeling unusual fatigue. Of course, many things could make you feel tired, but unexpected weakness and fatigue that hits you out of nowhere could indicate a bigger problem.

Coronary Heart Disease Symptoms

More women than men die of coronary heart disease, sometimes called coronary artery disease. It’s important to be on the lookout for symptoms that could indicate that you have heart disease. Some of these symptoms are similar to those you could experience with a heart attack, but they may be milder or happen over a longer period. The most common symptom is angina, or discomfort in your chest. Many people mistake angina for heartburn, and you might also feel it in your jaw, neck, arms, shoulders or back. Other symptoms that could indicate heart disease include dizziness, weakness, nausea and sweating. You should also watch out for palpitations and shortness of breath.

Arrhythmia Symptoms

Arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat. There are many causes of arrhythmia, including obesity and aging. You can learn about arrhythmia to find out how to reduce your risk of developing one and treat it if you do have it. You might experience palpitations, such as feeling skipped heartbeats or flip-flopping in your chest. Arrhythmia could also make you feel dizzy or light-headed and make you feel like your chest in pounding. Watch out for fainting, shortness of breath and chest discomfort too; these could all indicate an arrhythmia. Shortness of breath and weakness of fatigue could also be signs of an arrhythmia.

Many of these symptoms seem very similar. So how do you know if you have an arrhythmia or you’re having a heart attack? The best thing to do is to seek medical attention if you suspect any of these conditions. Don’t discount a heart attack because it could be something else.

Non Electrical Gift Ideas For Kids

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Advances in technology have meant that the gifts at the top of most children’s Christmas lists are electronics. But, with children constantly glued to the television, the computer screen of their iPad, buying them yet another electronic gift is probably not a good idea.

Aside from the fact that electronic gifts are expensive, they also promote a lack of imagination. So, instead of buying them yet another electronic gift or game, why not opt for something a bit different.

3787721913_0cac5fcfbd_z(Photo credit)

For our favorite non-electrical gift ideas, check out some ideas.

Outdoor toys

An excellent way to get the kids out and about is to buy them a toy or game that they can use outside.

A bike can make one of the best gifts; it gives children the option of some independence as well as being an excellent mode of transport. To keep your little ones safe whilst out and about make sure to include a helmet and high visibility stickers in their stocking.

While roller blades can take some time to adjust to, mastering the art of how to use them shouldn’t take too long. To help your children learn to skate safely, allow them to practice in a certain area of the house. Rollerblading is an excellent way to keep fit and healthy whilst having fun. To make roller blades a more exciting gift, opt for a pair that are designed in your child’s favourite color. Alternatively, look for a pair that are based on their favorite television or movie character. Make sure to include a safety helmet and knee and arm pads with their gifts.

A unique alternative to a bike, a Go Kart can make the perfect Christmas gift. There are some really interesting children’s Go Kart designs available, which are perfect for both boys and girls alike. Modern children’s Go Kart’s are safe, easy to use and are great for getting the kids out and about.

Indoor toys and games

While outdoor toys are great; it is nice to have some non-electrical indoor toys for your children to play with too.

While a new board game may seem like a boring gift, there are always lots of new and exciting games being bought out. If your child has a favorite television show or movie, have a look to see whether any games related to them have been released. If your child is obsessed with a film character, like Elsa from Frozen, for example, any gift related to them will be an exciting one.

A customized gift is another great non-electrical present. Things like a personalized blanket, cushion or bean bag are all lovely Christmas gifts that children will appreciate. For some lovely customized gift ideas look online at the angel dear range.

If your children have space in their bedroom or playroom, why not get them indoor play equipment like an indoor slide, a fold out crawl tunnel, or even an indoor swing. Anything that keeps them active and having fun inside the house will make the perfect Christmas present.

Wooden toys like a mini kitchen or mini launderette set are always popular gifts for young children. Kids love being able to copy what mommy and dad do, so any gift that lets them do that will be an appreciated one. Have a look online to see what child-size furniture sets are available.

For older children, arts and crafts sets make lovely presents, plus they are an excellent way to keep them entertained. With so many different arts and crafts sets to choose from, there is something for every child.

Remember, sometimes the simplest things make the best presents.
