In these hectic times, it can often feel as though there are many forces trying to pull your family apart. Technology has meant that your kids are always distracted by tiny glowing screens, whilst adults are expected to work ever-longer hours. It can seem like keeping a family together can be a massive undertaking in such an environment.

But this actually just means that as a parent you are more responsible than ever for the happiness of your family. You should be thinking of ways to keep your family together. This doesn’t just mean that you and your partner are not divorced. It means creating a sense of family, where there can exist clear lines of communication and an open atmosphere. It also means bonding through shared experiences and activities.

To help you out, we’ve come up with a number of ideas for ways to have your family stay together in the harsh and hectic modern world.

Regular Events

It can often seem like even the near future is unpredictable. As a parent you should be looking to create a sense of regularity in your family life. This means making sure that there is a fixture in the timetable of every week, where you and your kids can come together and spend time with each other.

This might mean a family meal, an afternoon walk or a service at Harvest Family Church. Whatever it is, it should be about bringing you closer as a family on a regular basis. Obviously you should try to do things like this more than once a week. Family meals, for example, have been proven to be beneficial for kids. But there should be one big immovable event in your weekly life.

Engagement Across Spheres

This means letting your kids know that you are interested in the school and social lives. As they grow older, your kids may seem more and more secretive and antisocial. If you can establish a non-invasive interest in their lives, then they should feel as though they are able to approach you with any problems that they may have.

This will ultimately mean that if they are even unhappy or confronted by a problem that they are having difficulty handling, they will be happy to approach you. This will not only make their life better, but it will bring you closer together.

Shared Interests

You may not be able to cultivate a shared interest between all of your children, but you should certainly be able to find one that you share with each of your kids. This can be a great way to establish some one-on-one time that will allow you to focus on something else whilst also bonding. Many kids find it hard to express themselves outright, especially as they transition into adulthood. So having an activity to focus on while you discuss your life in general can be a great way to get around this. You could combine this with our other tip, and establish some time together as a regular occurrence.

Disclosure- I received the item mentioned below to facilitate my review. I received no other compensation and all opinions are 100% my own.

science

Amaze your friends and family with this Toys’R’Us exclusive Edu Science Wacky Lab Extreme Science Lab! My girls were soon excited when this arrived in the mail. They are hands-on learners for sure and love to try out new things. My oldest is 11 and has been dipping into experiments at school a little bit, but not as much as she would like. That’s why this kit is perfect for her!

She couldn’t wait to tear into the highly decorated box to see what was inside. That’s why I let her cover this one. She took all of her own pictures. Since there are over 100 activities to do in this awesome box, she hasn’t done them all quite yet. This science kit is perfect for those “I’m bored” moments.

science

The Edu Science Wacky Lab Extreme Science Lab includes test tubes with lids, rack, mixing tray, magnifying glass, pipettes, scoop, Petri dish, cups, energy stick, geyser and twister tubes, magnet, energy beads, string, bags of powders/crystals, water-absorbing materials, plastic loop, hex nut, PTC paper, color tablets, film canister, and instructions. Everything your awesome kids need to become a REAL scientist. Well, sorta.

You have everything you need to grow crystals, concoct different types of goo, create quicksand, make a tornado in a bottle and so more. The possibilities are actually mind blowing. And for the price… you honestly can’t beat it.

science

I’m quite impressed with this kit. Much more than I thought I would be. We have tried other science kits in the past and none have been this great. I will definitely be adding to her collection. It’s great to see an educational “toy” keep her attention for so long. She always tells me she wants to be a “CSI person” so this might be the start of her journey.

K’NEX® Amusement Parks Star Shooter Roller Coaster Review #ChoosenByKids

Disclosure- This sponsored post was written by me on behalf of Sverve, K’NEX®, and Walmart but all opinions are my own.

toy testerYou probably saw in my post about my family’s holiday traditions that I was attending the Chosen by Kids (#ChoosenByKids) event at Walmart to check out all the hottest new toys for this holiday season.  They had toys for all different ages for children to test out.Chosen by KidsThe ones that struck my eye were the K’NEX®  Roller Coaster Building Sets.  At the store they had a Super Sonic Swirl Coaster Set.   It wasn’t assembled but I did get to see the parts it included and the instructions.
KnexI knew my girls (and my 39 year old child aka my husband) would love to build any one of the 3 K’NEX®  roller coaster building sets.  They didn’t have any for purchase in the first store that I went to but thankfully I found the Star Shooter Roller Coaster at another Walmart a few days later.
K'NEX® Amusement Parks Star Shooter Roller Coaster ReviewThe K’NEX®  Star Shooter Coaster is a roller coaster set that children age 7 and up can assemble themselves.  It is motorized and includes a battery powered car that goes around the track.  When full constructed it reaches over 3 feet high!  There are 3 roller coaster building sets to assemble in this collection- Star Shooter Roller Coaster, Super Sonic Swirl, and Amazin 8 Roller Coaster.  All 3 sets look like so much fun and I was excited to find a Star Shooter Roller Coaster Set!

The Star Shooter Coaster is motorized for exciting performance that sends the car up the chain lift and spiraling through the track! This set comes with 434 parts, primarily rods & connectors, to build a K’NEX® thrill ride!  It is recommended for builders ages 7+ and requires 2 “AA” batteries which are not included.  Make sure to grab a package of batteries while at Walmart so your child can play with this fun set right away.
knex 2The set says ages 7+ but I think it is better for older children.  My husband and 11 year old daughter started to put it together but my husband had to join in to help her a little which is great for some fun family time.  This set helps spatially because  you have to make sure each piece isn’t just connected to the correct other pieces but they have to be all going in the right direction, too.  It is a challenge but one that is fun to do together.
This is how far they got after about an hour:
KnexWe ran out of time before the deadline for this post but we’re planning on getting the set finished this weekend.  We can’t wait to see how it turns out.  It would make a great gift for any K’NEX® fan so check it out!

Eat Your Greens: How to Encourage the Kids to Eat More Healthily

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

“Eat your greens!” is an adage that many parents live by. But, what to do when your kids refuse to eat the healthy foods on their plate? It can drive us to the brink of despair. After all, you want your children to grow up to strong and healthy. A diet of bread crumbs can play havoc with that.

Getting kids to eat their fruit and vegetables can be problematic. Tackling the problem of fussy eating is not something that can be done overnight. But, there are some great ways that you can encourage a healthier lifestyle all-round.

Give Fruit as a Pudding

We often reward kids with dessert for eating their dinner. But, many of us give sweet treats. We’re all guilty of it. Make sure that you are encouraging your kids to eat more fruit by giving them a fruit salad as a pudding or dessert. Make it colourful, so that it looks appealing. Grapes, strawberries and bananas are all rich in their colour. The bright look of fruit can be appealing for kids. So, ditch the chocolate and make sure that you are giving fruit as a pudding. This is a great way of encouraging them to eat more carefully and healthily.

Make it Fun!

Fruit and vegetables don’t have to be boring. A great way of making sure that your kids eat their greens is all in the presentation. Make smiley faces on their plate using vegetables of different colours. Think about their favourite animals or hobbies, and use the vegetables to create the shapes on their plate. This can be time-consuming. But, the rewards can be beneficial. Kids often see vegetables as dull. So, jazz up dinner times and encourage them to eat their greens.

Grow Your Own Greens

Getting the kids involved with growing their own fruit and vegetables is one of the best ways to encourage them to ditch their fussy eating habits. They will take an enormous amount of pride in their produce. Plus, they get to eat it afterwards! Growing fruit in your garden is easy. You don’t need a raft of expensive equipment. A small plot of land and grow lighting can ensure that you are on your way to having a house full of healthy eaters. They will love the messy element of this!

Expose Your Kids to Different Food Stuffs Early On

For many children, the texture of fruit and vegetables can be off-putting. The key is to ensure that you introduce them to various food stuffs at an early stage. You can puree the food to make sure that they are getting nutritional foods. But, you can also ensure that you are introducing different kinds of foods at an early age. The more accessible you find fruit and vegetables, the easier it will be to feed your kids.

The Reward Chart System

Reward charts can be beneficial for fussy eaters. Give out stickers and stars every time they eat their greens. Make sure that you follow up with praise. The key is to not lose your temper. This can have a negative impact on your child’s relationship with food.

Fabulous and Affordable: Keeping the Costs of Your Wedding Down

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

No one want’s to skimp on the biggest day of their lives, but is it really worth starting your life together with mountains of debt hanging over your heads from the wedding? With house deposits, children and holidays to save up for; we show you how to save your money for the things that really matter and still throw a wedding that’s the talk of the town.

Screen Shot 2014-12-22 at 5.15.04 PM

The Venue

In many cases, the venue is the most expensive part of the whole day. If you’ve had your heart set on one particular venue, there are plenty of things you can do to get it at a fraction of the cost.

A cancellation at a wedding venue may mean heartbreak for someone else, but for you it could be a godsend. If you are organised and can whip friends and family into action quickly, consider making the venue aware that you would be able to do a date at short notice. Very few brides are willing to be this flexible, so you’re not likely to have much competition. It is also worth remembering how much of the cost of the venue (if any) is non-refundable. This puts you in a strong position when talking price for a last minute opening.

If the chance for a last-minute bargain doesn’t present itself, consider booking the venue at a time when it is in less demand. Fridays and Saturdays are the most popular and therefore the most expensive days to get married. Opt for a Thursday or even a Wednesday to secure your venue at a fraction of the cost. Of course, you will need to give guests a decent amount of notice so they can book time off work well in advance.

If you are not limited on where you want to get married, think outside the box. Hiring a big holiday home for a week and holding the reception there is around the same price as a venue but you have the place for seven days. Take the bridal party with you and spend a few days enjoying local sights, visiting the salon and dressing the house for the big day. With everyone there, you can do much of the organising and decorating (and even some of the cooking) yourselves which keeps the costs down.

The Extras

The extras are what makes a wedding, they also add a serious amount to the cost. Utilising the goodwill and skills of family and friends at this point could save you hundreds, even thousands, before the day is over.

Do you know anyone that is an especially good baker? Great! Let them do the cake and you’ll not only have something personal and meaningful, you’ll have a hell of a saving to match. You could even suggest they do it as your gift so you can secure the cake for free!

Alcohol is another big expense when it comes to weddings. Don’t order it through the venue, they’ll inflate the cost. Buying it yourself at a cash and carry or online liquor store and paying the venue corkage will save you a small fortune and puts an end to open bar taps.

Whatever you decided, the trick to a fabulous wedding is one that feels personal. If you enlist the help of the people who love you, inject some personality into the day and (above all) relax, your wedding is guaranteed to be fabulous and affordable.

Help With Surviving The School Holiday

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Whether it’s the fast approaching Christmas holidays or another break from school, it can be hard going. As much as children might pretend they like school they generally benefit from the schedule and structure of a school day. Not only that but it gives them plenty to do and a chance to see their friends, so it really isn’t all bad. It is when the school  holidays come around that children can get easily distracted and excitable, which can make it hard to get through!

However, like it or not your children get plenty of school holiday each year, so you need to be prepared.

Spend Time With Other Children

Children get bored easily so you need to make sure you do what you can t keep them happy. Try to arrange regular play date with children that they usually play with at school. That way they don’t miss their friends too much. On top of that they have plenty of fun and this makes the school holidays much more enjoyable for everyone. If you are visiting relatives then try to plan this for time when other young family members will be there. That way they can entertain themselves and the adults will have a much more stress-free time.

The Great Outdoors

Rather than being stuck inside the house all day, try to get children out and about. Even if the weather is bad – just wrap up warm and get out there. Children need fresh air to grow and to feel good. If you are all stuck out in the house under each other’s feet, everyone will soon get bored and fed up. Plan a day outside, even if just for a few hours. You can be sure that everyone will feel better for it.

A Little Education

Just because they are not in school doesn’t mean that you can forget education altogether. You can use the school holidays to complement their education. This will mean that they do much better when they do go back. There are loads of educational games you can download onto your laptop and smart phones so get some of these for you to all play. Not only will they keep your children entertained but they can teach them new skills too.

Screen Shot 2014-12-22 at 5.03.11 PM

Wikimedia

Getting Crafty

It is also a good idea to try and keep them busy with new ideas too. Try to look up things that you can make together. Children love getting crafty especially if they get something useful at the end of it. So you can perhaps cook dinner together or make Christmas presents for the family. There are loads of crafty projects suitable for young children so look these up online, and you’ll find plenty to keep everyone happy.

Have Fun

Remember though that this is the school holidays and therefore it is their chance to wind down. It is important to keep them busy and happy, but they need time to rest and relax too. Plan games that will keep them happy just for the sake of playing. You can also plan DVD days and fun sleepovers.

You can even download some games onto your laptop for them to play with. There are a whole host of games that you can be downloaded. This is great because it means that when they get bored you can simply delete it and put a new one on for them. So whether they’re looking for different racing games, roleplay games, puzzle solving or anything else you can be confident that they will be something for them. Just make sure you supervise their play and that you do them downloading and not them.

Day Trips

One thing that worries parents is the cost of activities during the holidays. However don’t assume that all you need to worry about is expensive trips out and spending lots of money. If you look up local museums and other attractions you’ll find that many of these cost less than you think and some are even free! You can easily plan an affordable day out around these, especially if you are organised and take packed lunches with you.

Keeping a Schedule

One thing that children relish from when it comes to school is the schedule that they keep while they are there. There is nothing wrong with a few late nights during the holidays but it is important to keep these as a treat. If you let children stay up too late every single night, then you’ll find it much harder to get them back into a decent sleep schedule when school starts up again. Not only that but if your child gets tired then, they are far more likely to get grouchy and bored during the day. The last thing you want is for them to spend their school holidays in a bad mood.

Burning Off Energy

Children get bored because they have energy to burn and no way to burn it. Give them something to do every day that is going to help them burn off their energy. This could be something as simple as an hour at the park or taking them swimming at the local leisure centre. It could also be a day out somewhere with loads of walking. Anything that gets them moving and burning energy is a definite bonus.

Wikimedia

Keeping Things Varied

If you can come up with an activity that your children like then great, however you do have to make sure that you keep things varied. If you keep repeating the same activity over and over again then they’ll become quickly bored, and that is no good for anyone. Rather than let this happen, just try to keep things as interesting and varied as possible.

The school holidays are a great way to spend time as a family. Plan out your days in advance and speak to your children about the things they would most like to do. That way you all have fun and spend some valuable time together.

Make The Most Of Your Home With These Domestic Improvements

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

I often get overwhelmed when I survey my home and notice all the things that need to be repaired and areas that could do with improvement. It is easy to become stressed out by this, especially if, like me, you don’t have the disposable income or time to sort them all out.

During one of my home improvement induced panic episodes, I turned to the internet for help. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I am in no way alone in this situation. In fact, there is a wealth of advice and “how to” guides addressed to people who want to make easy, quick and affordable improvements to their property.

After studying articles on home improvement at exploded home, as well as other blogs and websites, I dedicated the last two weekends to revamping my interiors. I am pleased to say that it has really worked; my home looks and feels completely transformed. With minimal effort, I have developed such a feeling of pride and comfort in my home. I feel compelled to help others achieve the same. So, here are my tips on how to make the most of your home with just a few easy domestic improvements.

  1. Paint your way to a finer home

During your home improvement activities, paint will fast become your best friend. It is amazing the difference a fresh coat can make in brightening and enhancing your walls and furniture.

Over time, the interior walls of your home become dull and blemished due to general wear and tear. This can come in the form of chips, holes, dirt and scratches. If you are a parent, you may even notice the occasional grubby hand print or crayon mark.

To start, I went around my home and used post-it notes to mark the areas that needed a touch-up of paint. I used a mild household cleaner and warm water to remove any surface dirt. I was then left with the blemishes that required a lick of paint. Luckily, I had an assortment of paint tins stored from previous DIY jobs and so I didn’t need to spend any money on this domestic improvement.

If you don’t have any leftover paint, I would recommend picking up a few tester-sized tins. These will provide more than enough paint for touch-up work and only cost a couple of dollars per sample. How long this task will take depends on how scuffed your walls are. However, it shouldn’t take any more than a couple of hours. When touching up walls, make sure you are using the same color and that you apply the paint in the same way and direction as the rest of the wall.

However, if you think your home would benefit from a more extensive paint job then you’ll need to purchase a full-sized tin of paint. DIY store own brands are usually the most economical option. Any paint that you don’t use will come in handy when you need to cover up any marks in the future. There is an abundance of information available online on how to paint your walls quickly and easily.

2. Revitalise your tired furniture

There is always something you can do to fix and refresh your worn out furniture.

Gently use a baby wipe or microfiber cloth with a little vinegar to remove stains from your upholstery. After spot cleaning, your upholstery may benefit from an overall clean and rinse. Most sofa cushion covers can be removed and machine washed, but do check the cleaning instructions before doing this. Alternatively, mix a little mild laundry detergent with some warm water and apply all over the furniture using a cloth.

Any loose threads can be snipped or sewn back into the material. Holes or rips in upholstery can be fixed easily using a needle and thread, fabric glue or they can be patched up with spare material.

Surface scratches on wooden furniture can be removed by applying a paste wax to the surface and buffing the area. The wax will fill the scratch mark and the buffing will even out the surface. If the scratch goes deep into the wood, before applying the wax you should use shoe polish or colored pencils, for example, to make the blemish match the surface color of the wood.

As well as cosmetic fixes, you can give your interior a new twist with a few finishing touches to your furniture. Your cabinets may benefit from a fresh coat of paint or varnish and some interesting new handles. And your sofas and chairs will look refreshed when covered with beautiful cushions and throws.

3. Make your home sparkle

I spent one day doing a proper clean, and I have to say, it was by far the biggest improvement I made. I concentrated on the things I don’t always have time to do like buff the faucets and clean the inside of the windows. Yes, it took the best part of the day to complete, but it was worth it, and I know I won’t have to do it again for a while.

Crystal clear windows will make your home look bright and spacious. You can clean your windows like a proif you are equipped with the right utensils. Instead of using a paper towel and spray, get yourself a squeegee (these products range from $20 to $100, but are well worth the money). With this piece of equipment, I halved the time I would normally spend on the windows. Apply some soapy warm water to your windows using a sponge and simply clean away the water with the squeegee for a spotless, streak-free finish.

During your deep clean, pay some attention to your chrome and stainless steel items. Believe me, this will really make your kitchen and bathroom shine. Once you have given them a good clean, apply some baby oil to your stove top and faucets and buff with a cloth. After you’ve done this, they will be so shiny they will double up as a mirror.

This article has shown you that it is possible to make the most of what you’ve got at home in an easy and affordable way. If you get the chance to try out some of these tips, I hope that you see as big an improvement to your home as I did.

PackIt freezable bags work just like a refrigerator on the go, chilling food and drinks up to 10 hours. The secret is the cooler’s freezable gel liner. Once the bag is frozen, its walls generate waves of cold air that chill your food and drinks from all sides.

Here’s how it works:

My family and I like to take a lot of day trips. We usually throw some snacks and drinks into a plastic cooler and fill it with ice and then hit the road. There have been so many times that our food ends up mushy because of the melted water. Ugh!  Nobody wants mushy food. That’s why I was super thankful we found the PackIt Freezable Picnic Bag.

picnic3

I love that it has enough space to pack for a nice family picnic, and the built-in shoulder strap makes it so easy to carry. All you have to do is store the cooler in your freezer for a 12 hour period and it’s ready to go all day long. Throw in your favorite items and enjoy your day. Super easy!

I am so excited that I finally found a waste-free, environment friendly reusable juice box: JUICE IN THE BOX! And they come in such bright colors! Juice in the Box generously sent a couple of containers to test out. Aren’t they cute?

We immediately loved how well made they are.  Juice in the Box is available in 5 bright and fun colors- something for everyone.  My girls love juice, but I hate the thought of throwing away so much waste when they are done.  Now I can pack their lunches and know exactly what they are drinking.  They bring it home, I wash it out and get it ready for the next day.  They are super easy to clean also.  Plus I can control what juices we put in there so I can give them 100% juice instead of drink mixes, etc. that aren’t healthy.

I love how well they work for after school events and activities. Just fill them up and go. Without any leakage… SCORE! Oh, and don’t forget about car trips! No more stopping at a quick gas station to grab drinks on the go. Just fill up a Juice in the Box and you are ready to go!

Juice in the Box containers are a little bit bigger then regular juice boxes, which is perfect since my girls are a little older. The Juice in the Box containers holds up to 8 oz of liquid. That’s a pretty big difference from other juice boxes which hold usually hold around 6.75 oz.

Overall we are in love with our Juice in The Box containers and look forward to using them from years to come!
