Unusual Pets That Really Work

When we think about family pets we tend to think of cats and dogs. If we want something easier to look after then we might consider rabbits, hamsters or guinea pigs. These are all great and can make lovely additions to the family. However it is important to recognise that these are not your only choices. In fact there are many pet choices that are overlooked, but actually would make wonderful pets for your family.

Furry Animals

Mesocricetus_auratus_-pet_hamster-8aWikimedia

If you want a pet that everyone in the house can cuddle with and handle then a furry animal could be the right choice for you. Chinchillas and degus can be good choices, especially because they are OK left on their own all day if you are out at work. As long as they are handled often they are fine with being held and will happily sit on a lap to be petted. Although many people would say an automatic no, rats are really loving animals which makes them great pets. They’re also really easy to look after which is great.

Reptiles

Bartagame_fcmWikimedia

Although slightly less cuddly, reptiles are fascinating creatures. Lizards make a great family pet that everyone can get involved with. They do take a quite an extensive set-up and a lot of looking after, so you should make sure you know what you are getting into before you get  one. Lizards come in all sizes too, so whatever size of pet you are looking for there will be something that suits you..

Horses

Horse_in_autumn_sun_(5089765157)Wikimedia

Perhaps not a pet for the home, it is worth considering a horse as  a pet. They can be expensive and you’ll need somewhere for them to be stabled, but they make lovely pets. One of the best things about horses is that they are great for getting you out there and enjoying the great outdoors.

Being Prepared

Whatever type of pet you want, you need to make sure that you know what you are getting into. Different animals have different needs, so it is important that you know what is expected. When you have a pet you are in charge of their well-being, so it stands to reason you are going to want to do what is best for them. This means knowing what type of housing they like and what they eat. On top of that you need to look at what their daily and long term need are.

A big part of this is knowing who you should contact if there is a problem. When your pet is unwell you need to make sure that you know who to contact and get them medical advice. This could be a simple trip to the vet or the need to visit one stop equine shops. Whatever it is, knowing who to contact before the problem arises is a good idea!

Committing to a pet is a big deal and not a decision you should take lightly. That said, there are so many pets out there waiting for loving homes so if you’re in a position to give them one, you should.

Keep Your Family Fit And Healthy

Busy and hectic lifestyles can lead to a lack of exercise. With the amount of overweight and obese families on the increase, it is crucial that you teach your family the importance of eating healthily and exercising regularly.

If you and your family spend most of your free time in front of the television screen or on the computer, it is vital that you begin to make changes to your lifestyle.

But, how can you go about changing your lifestyle and getting your family to be more active?

Family_Ride_bicycle_cycle_trailer(Photo credit)

Start by setting a good example

Set a good example for your family by taking the first steps to becoming healthier. Depending on whether you are just unfit or overweight, you may want to make an appointment to have a chat with your doctor first.

Explain that you are trying to change your lifestyle and make your family healthier. If you are extremely overweight, your doctor may refer you to a dietitian or weight loss clinic for advice and tips on how you can stop obesity for life. You may be asked to follow an individual eating and exercise plan, or depending on the severity of your weight, may be advised to have weight loss surgery.

Make sure to take on board and implement any health advice or tips your doctor or specialist suggests. If your children see that you are making an effort to be healthier and are having fun with it, they will be more inclined to give it a go to.

Make time for exercise

Although it can be difficult to fit exercise into your hectic schedule, it is crucial that you find a way to do so. If possible, set aside periods of time specifically for exercise. If it isn’t possible to set aside specific time periods, think of ways you can exercise without needing to book time out of your schedule to do so.

Instead of driving the children to school, get up half an hour earlier and walk them there instead. Instead of parking right outside of work, park a few streets away and walk to your office. If you usually drive to work, you could swap your car for a bicycle. Cycling is an excellent way to beat the morning traffic, as well as being an easy way to keep fit.

On weekends, plan activities for you and your family to do. Don’t just sit inside watching television, get out and about. For a fun afternoon out, walk the dog to the park and let the children have a run about. Whilst you are watching the children play don’t sit on a park bench, instead keep moving around. For an exciting day out, why not go for a family bike ride. You could pack a healthy picnic and head off on your bikes.

If you can find ways to make exercise enjoyable, then you and your family can get a lot out of it.

Only eat healthy snacks

Don’t make the mistake of allowing yourself and your children to eat unhealthy snacks. Whilst you may serve healthy main meals each day, you may forget about how unhealthy a sugar filled snack can be.

To encourage your children to eat healthy snacks, don’t buy crisps, chocolate or sweets. Instead, stock your snack cupboard with healthy snacks. Fresh fruit, low-fat yogurts, cucumber or carrot sticks, nuts and seeds, and other healthy whole grains are excellent for snacking. If you fancy a treat, make it yourself. By making your cakes and biscuits yourself, you know exactly what goes into them and can limit the amount of sugar baked into them.

The Secrets that Hairdressers Don’t Want you to Know

Hairdressers will always be around. We always want gorgeous, healthy looking hair. But do you ever get the feeling that your hairdresser isn’t telling you something? They have secrets; secrets that they don’t want you to know. Luckily, we’re here to fill you in.

  • They’d Rather You Didn’t Bring Your Kids

Ever showed up at the salon with your kids and thought you spotted a flicker of dismay across your hairdresser’s face? You were right. Hairdressers hate it when you bring your kids, especially if they are the type of kids who just can’t settle. Get a sitter for an hour, or book your appointment at a time when you haven’t got the kids. You want to enjoy your appointment too, right?

  • Cutting Your Hair Won’t Make it Grow Quicker

You know all those rumors you heard about hair growing quicker when you cut it? It’s a lie. Your hair will look healthier. That’s about it. Hair is already dead, and therefore doesn’t know when you cut it. It’ll be shorter when you have it cut, and will definitely not feel compelled to grow. Don’t get us wrong; it’s great to have a regular cut. Just don’t be under this illusion!

  • Root Touch Up Kits Can be Just as Good

Constantly going backwards and forwards to have your hair done? Root touch up kits can be just as good! Be careful though. If you have prominent grey/black roots, you might be better off chasing your hairdresser.

  • No Product Can Fix Split Ends

All of those products on the market that claim to fix your split ends? They don’t. It’s a whole load of false advertising. They can make them look a little better for a short amount of time, but they can’t bond your hair back together and fix them. All you can do is take better care of your hair to avoid them.

7993461800_3157c513c8_zLeo

  • Some Foods and Supplements May Give You Salon Quality Hair

By eating right and taking a hair supplement, you might find that your hair begins to look salon quality at all times, rather than just after your appointment. Try incorporating lots of vegetables and fish into your diet to nourish your hair from the inside out. Healthy fats are best for healthy hair. Oh, and healthy fats don’t make you fat, so stop worrying!

  • You Can Cut Your Own Split Ends

Forget asking your hairdresser to fit you in for a few split ends. Cut your own! There’s plenty of instruction online if you need help, and it’ll save you time and money. If you only have a small amount of split ends, don’t be scared to try it. If your split ends are severe, however, you should always visit the hairdresser.

Now you know the things your hairdresser doesn’t want you to know, you can make smart choices when it comes to booking appointments and what to have done. Just don’t tell your hairdresser that we told on them…we wouldn’t want to get in trouble. Thanks for reading!

Baby on the Way? Make Sure You’ve got These Supplies!

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

If you’ve got a baby on the way, you’ll need plenty of supplies ready before they arrive. This way, you can ensure that you’re fully prepared. If we listed every single thing you needed we’d be here all day. The following items are the most important!

Lots of Plain Clothes

Lots of plain clothes goes for both you and the baby. Things like baby grows for the baby and clothes you don’t care much about are both essentials. This is because the baby is probably going to be sick on everything it owns, as well as everything you own. If worst comes to worst, they’ll do other things to your clothes too. You can’t be too precious about them, especially in their first year.

Diapers of Different Sizes

Diapers come in all different sizes, so make sure you have some of each size. Of course you only really need newborn diapers to start with, but make sure you don’t buy too many. Babies grow quickly, so you don’t want any to go to waste.

A Stockpile of Wipes

Wipes will become your best friends. They’ll wipe up spit up, food, and other gunk from your baby.

Something to Stop Scratching

Babies are known for scratching themselves red raw. A product like Scratchsleeves could help.

A Changing Pad

You need somewhere comfortable to change your baby, so invest in a changing pad or changing table. Again, it’ll need to be wipe-clean material as you’ll get all kinds of substances on it over time.

A Stroller

You’ll want to take your baby out, so make sure you have a stroller ready. Make sure it has the features you think are important in a stroller. Read reviews online as well first.

Carseat

If you drive, your baby will need a carseat to come on trips with you. Make sure you install it properly so that it’s secure. Read reviews on car seats too.

Carrier

Carriers can be seriously helpful. They can allow you to spend time with your baby while still getting on with your regular chores. Your baby won’t feel neglected and you’ll still be able to clean the house, and do anything else you need to do.

Breastfeeding Accessories

The saying goes, ‘breast is best’. Make sure you have all of the breastfeeding accessories you need to make it convenient for both you and your baby.

Bibs

You can’t stop babies from making a mess, but you can at least try. Invest in a few bibs.

Dummies

These can help babies to calm down when they start to get upset. Some babies don’t take to them, but most do.

Toys

Toys help babies start to learn and grow from a young age. The sounds and colours they produce help to develop a babies learning mind. Toys with lots of textures, colours, and sounds are best.

If you make sure you have all of these supplies in advance, you can breathe a sigh of relief when your baby arrives. Enjoy your new arrival!

Stigmatised Health Issues: What Are We So Afraid Of?

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

As progressive as we like to think our society is, there are still plenty of topics we have yet to allow into the open. Diseases such as bowel cancer, erectile dysfunction and mental health issues are all very much considered taboo subjects. This not only prevents sufferers from admitting they have a problem, it also prevents many from seeking help.

2930756340_9d86fe5600_zImage Source: Caitlin Regan

Bowel Problems

It’s not hard to guess why conditions of the bowel and colon are firmly established on the ‘unmentionable’ list. Symptoms caused by any disease associated with this particular part of the body are likely to be unpleasant.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is believed to affect between three and twenty percent of the population in varying degrees. Compare this with the fact that forty thousand people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year, and it becomes obvious that the these diseases are an integral part of many people lives. Despite this, we still won’t talk about them.

Psoriasis

Sufferers of this chronic immune disorder endure frequent outbreaks of cracked, inflamed and scaly skin. The skin can flake easily and large patches are often difficult to hide. The general reaction to seeing this condition is to shy away, increasing the embarrassment of sufferers. With a range of treatments only offering limited improvement at best, this condition can affect the day-to-day living of those suffering from it. Indeed, one-third of sufferers admitted to limiting their social interactions because of psoriasis flare-ups.

Mental Health Disorders

Mental health is the big disorder we all associate with social stigma. Many of us have witnessed first hand the abuse and disrespect people with obvious cognitive handicaps experience in public places. But have any of us ever gone to their aid?

The problem with mental health is that it can affect anyone, at any age or stage in life. Yes, life-changing conditions such as Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder have a proven genetic component, but they also affect people with no family history of either disease. Panic attacks and anxiety disorders are as much a condition of the environment as genetics, and they might just as easily strike you or me as they would the person standing next to us. There are a wide variety of treatments available. www.time-to-change.org details how Schizophrenia sufferers are supported in everyday life whilst the Panic Away Review gives a good indication of the level of relief available to sufferers of anxiety disorders.

What Are We Afraid Of?

This is the big question, and one that is difficult to answer rationally. None of these conditions are contagious, they might affect us just as easily as anyone else. The fact that they don’t is just luck of the draw. We are all so fearful of these diseases that we fail to talk about them, to educate each other, banish ignorance and bring them into the light of day. The reality is, this is the kindest thing we can do for sufferers. Treat them normally and hope others follow our example. At least then we know that we have done everything in our power to make the people living with these diseases feel better.

The Nikon D5300 DSLR camera is great because it is a DSLR camera that captures high quality photos but is easy to use PLUS it has built-in Wi-Fi so you can quickly and easily share your photos on social media!  It uses VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization to limit the effects of camera shake and vibration- no more blurry pictures.  This camera is the most expensive out of the three mentioned in this post but a great option for anyone looking for a DSLR.

My cellphone is a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 so I especially like the Samsung Galaxy 2 Digital Camera because it has a similar feel to my cellphone and like the other cameras, it also features built in Wi-Fi.  It has face detection that helps you bring your subjects into clear view and 21 times optical zoom.  It is also the least expensive option out of the three.

My Family’s Holiday Gift Giving Traditions

Disclosure- This sponsored post was written by me on behalf of Sverve and Walmart but all opinions are my own.

Opening Chanukah present6

This is a throwback picture of my daughter opening some of her first Chanukah presents- BOOKS!  Both of my girls have always loved books.  My daughter will be 11 years old tomorrow.  Where does the time go?

We celebrate Chanukah in our family.  When my girls were younger we would get them 8 presents (which were usually toys) for Chanukah, one for each night.  Now that they are older we don’t get them 8 big toy gifts any more.  They both have December birthdays so that is when they usually get a bigger gift from us.  For Chanukah we get them smaller gifts each night.  I started a tradition a few years ago of having a theme for each night’s presents and I am going to do that again this year.

The tentative themes for the 8 nights of Chanukah this year will be:

1st Night- Toys

My girls love Barbies and other dolls, figures, etc. so they will probably each get one special doll.  I haven’t totally figured this one out.

2nd Night- Art Supplies

Walmart has a great selection of arts and craft supplies so I will either buy them each a kit to make something or I’ll buy a bunch of art supplies for them to come up with projects on their own.

3rd Night- Movies (DVDs/Blu-rays)

I score some great DVD deals at Walmart on Black Friday.

4th Night- Clothes

I got them really cute pajamas with their favorite characters on them at Walmart on Black Friday plus I will be getting them some other cute outfits.  They love dresses so they will each probably get a new dress, too.

5th Night- Books

My girls are both bookworms, thankfully, so they LOVE getting books.  There are a few books that I knew they are both hoping for so they’ll be getting those.

6th Night- Games

This year I want to have more family game nights in our house so I am going to get them some games that we don’t have.

7th Night- Building Toys

I’ll be check out the K’NEX® Amusement Parks at Walmart’s Toyland event on Friday.  My girls love Disney World so I think my girls would like to build their own amusement park ride with K’NEX® .

8th Night- Jewelry

I bought them each a special necklace that says “You are my Sunshine, My only Sunshine” because I always sing that to them.
You Are My Sunshine Necklace

Growing up my mother used to give my sister and me our main gifts but the first night of Chanukah we always received a gift bag filled with small goodies like nail polish, stickers, lip gloss, and other small things my mother knew we would like.  It was her version of giving us stocking stuffers.  Now I do the same for my girls.  It is one tradition that I have always loved.  I hope my girls do the same when they have children.

What are your family’s holiday gift giving traditions?
