Nobody wants pests in their home. Have you noticed suspicious looking critters in the garden? Are you worried about creatures in the kitchen? Follow these simple steps to keep your house pest-free.

Keep your house clean

In most cases, pests are attracted to dirt and debris, so keep on top of your chores. Vacuum on a regular basis and mop kitchen and bathroom tiles. Take extra care to ensure that any spillages are dealt with quickly and don’t leave food out on your surfaces. Try to keep your kitchen and bathroom as dry as possible. Wipe down work areas with antibacterial products after cooking and chopping. Place dirty dishes in soapy water straightaway. Wash up or load your dishwasher daily. .

Food hygiene

It’s essential to follow food hygiene guidelines when preparing and storing fresh produce. Keep fresh food in the fridge or freezer and never leave leftovers hanging around. Check your cupboards and the fridge regularly and throw away anything that has passed its use-by date. Use sealed jars and screw-top lids to store food and drinks securely. Wash chopping boards immediately after use.

Get to grips with garbage

Garbage is incredibly alluring to pests. Make sure your bins are firmly sealed and don’t leave trash bags lying around on your drive or kitchen floor. Take the rubbish out regularly and tie the bags tightly.

Create barriers

If you notice gaps and cracks, which may provide an entry route into your home for pests, patch them up. Seal window and door frames and repair cracks in skirting boards. Fill any holes, which may be tempting for a mouse or rat.

Nip the problem in the bud

If you notice droppings, it’s best to act quickly. Don’t wait until you have a full-blown infestation to get in touch with pest control experts. Arrange for an experienced professional to visit your home and scout around for evidence. If there are pests, they can get rid of them before the situation gets any worse. It’s also worth asking for tips and tricks to prevent a similar situation in the future.

Groom your pets

If you have a pet cat or dog, take care to groom them regularly and treat them for fleas. Warning signs to look out for include itching and black dots in the fur. You may also notice debris on bed covers and sofa cushions. Comb your pet and use flea spray on your soft furnishings. If your pet does have fleas, you will need to vacuum the entire house on a regular basis. Ask your vet for advice if you are having trouble shifting fleas. They lay eggs very quickly and can be tricky to get rid of for good.

Nobody wants to spend their time dealing with pests or worrying about what they may find when they wake up in the morning. Follow these simple guidelines to reduce the risk of infestations.  Get in touch with the experts if you think you may have a problem at home.
