A New Kind of Christmas Movie to Check Out! 3 Fun Christmas Movies to Watch With Your Family!

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Nothing gets me more in the mood for Christmas like a great Christmas movie! This year we added a few more classics to the collection. Let me tell you about 3 of my favorites this year. They are kind of non-traditional, so maybe that’s why they seem so exciting.

First is “Chilly Christmas

Super cute movie about a boy and his best friend, his dog Chilly Christmas. He received him as a gift from his dad, but little did they know they were up for some major challenges to stay together. Apartment training, mischievous puppy, and dognapping just to name a couple. A great movie that shows you with a little bit of team work, and a lot of love in your heart you can accomplish anything! Much different from the usual snowy Christmas, as this movie takes place on the beach in sunny California.

Next on my list of favorites is “The Dog Who Saved The Holidays

Perfect family movie and all animal lovers! Super cute movie about family, Christmas and THIEVES… Nothing like talking dogs to warm your heart and save the day! This movie is jammed packed full of action and surprise to keep you on your toes, while wondering what is going to happen next. In the end; a family that works together always comes out on top. “The Dog That Saved The Holidays” has all of my favorite things. Family, traditions, and holiday spirit.

And last on my list is “Elf Man

This movie is all about a new kind of hero, and just like the title says it’s Elf Man! With a kidnapped dad, 2 kids are left to figure out how to save him from trouble. With a little help from Santa and one elf who never really knew his full potential they work out a plan to save the day. This is a super cute, never a dull moment kind of movie. Full of twist and turns you really never know what could happen. This is why it is now a must watch on my Christmas movie list.

Now out on DVD and Blu-ray is SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s A SpongeBob Christmas!  This fun holiday movie features all of your favorite Bikini Bottom characters- SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, and more!  What is unique about this movie is that instead of it being a cartoon like the regular SpongeBob shows are, this movie is stop-motion animation, which brings a fun new dimension.  Full of lots of fun songs such as  “Don’t Be a Jerk, It’s Christmas”, this 22 minute movie is sure to delight both adults and children.

Jingle the bells, put up some mistletoe and make a cup of cocoa because the Christmas season starts early with the DVD debut of Nickelodeon’s first-ever full-length stop-animation special, SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s A SpongeBob Christmas! Inspired by the classic Rankin/Bass specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, this new holiday classic for the entire family arrives on store shelves on Nov. 6.  This perfect holiday gift includes two MP3 compatible downloadable songs from the episode (“Santa’s Eyes” and “Hot Fruitcake”) and the exclusive Behind the Scenes Featurette.  So there’s plenty to rejoice for both new and old SpongeBob fans this holiday season!

In SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s A SpongeBob Christmas!, Plankton vows to get his Christmas wish – the Krabby Patty formula – by turning everyone in Bikini Bottom bad by feeding them his special jerktonium-laced fruitcake. John Goodman guest stars as Santa Claus.  Don’t miss the popular SpongeBob SquarePants song, “Don’t Be a Jerk, It’s Christmas,” written by Tom Kenny (voice of SpongeBob) and Andy Paley.

What we thought-
We are big SpongeBob fans in our house so it was no surprise that we all enjoyed SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s A SpongeBob Christmas!  It is filled with fun songs and typical SpongeBob humor.  We all enjoyed experiencing our favorite characters in a new format.  After meeting Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob, a few months ago, this movie was even more special to me.  I don’t know if I will ever watch another SpongeBob movie without picturing Tom Kenny!  Grab this movie!  It’s a great holiday gift or stocking stuffer.

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL: 20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Now on DVD and Blu-ray is the 20th Anniversary Edition of the Charles-Dickens-inspired classic holiday story- The Muppet Christmas Carol.   It makes a great holiday gift or stocking stuffer.

And now, a word from Gonzo: Greetings, holiday movie fans and lovers of culture, I am Gonzo … or perhaps better known to fans of this classic motion picture as literary legend Charles Dickens. Are you ready to laugh, cry, sing, frolic, cavort and enjoy yourself beyond belief!? Well, you’re in luck, because this 20th Anniversary Edition of Disney’s “The Muppet Christmas Carol” is guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit that will stay with you forever—or at least until your Aunt Edna starts complaining that nobody is eating the fruitcake she brought … again!  Available for the first time ever on Blu-ray with high-definition sound and picture, so you can enjoy even more of my blue-ness, not to mention the incredible spectacle of Kermit the Frog as Bob Crachit, Miss Piggy as Emily Crachit, Academy Award-winner Michael Caine as Scrooge, wonderful songs by Academy Award-winner Paul Williams, and, of course, my pal Rizzo the Rat as.well, Rizzo the Rat. A heartwarming and hilarious holiday classic, told as never before by yours truly! Yule love it! Happy Holidays!

What We Thought:
I grew up watching the Muppets so I love being able to share them with my children.  The Muppet Christmas Carol is a classic and is entertaining to both children and adults.  It combines great music, humor, and of course a touching story that can be enjoyed by the whole family.  Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit’s wife,  Gonzo as Charles Dickens, and all the other adorable Muppets make this movie even more enjoyable.  Note- I hadn’t seen this movie since I was a child so I didn’t remember a song that was in the original called “When Love Is Gone”.  This song is not in this new version.  Some Muppet Christmas Carol fans might miss this song but for me I don’t miss what I don’t remember.

Happy’s Christmas Gift by Geoff Parker Sr. and Illustrated by Lisa Fox

From The Book:

“Oh no! Happy is in trouble again! Having gone out to post his Christmas letter to Santa, he suddenly finds himself on an unexpected journey.

Although Happy is cold and scared at first, his adventure takes a turn and delivers him to magical lands where he discovers that dreams really can come true. Can Happy save the day? And more importantly, will he get home in time for Christmas?

An adorable character and wonderful, traditional Christmas story brought to life by beautiful illustrations. A treasure of a book that will stand the test of time and will surely be a favourite read for all generations.

This book tells the story using both English and Spanish text, with key words highlighted in both languages to assist teaching young readers a basic vocabulary in a second language.”

My Thoughts on the Book:

Happy’s Christmas Gift is a beautifully written and illustrated story of an adorable and brave Yorkie who goes on an adventure to the North Pole when he accidentally ends up in a bag full of letters to Santa.  This delightful story is sure to be a Christmas classic in your home.  The pictures are beautiful, bright, and cheerful which engages children as much as the captivating story does.  I especially love how in the English/Spanish book each page has the story in both languages including several key words in bold writing so children can learn the word in each language.  My children loved this book and have asked me to read it with them several times.  It’s adorable.  We are all really looking forward to the next book that is coming out in the Happy Series- Happy As A Fox!

3 Beauty Treatments to Indulge in This Winter

Sometimes, after a long while of working a 9-5 in the cold weather, what you really need is an indulgent beauty treatment to make you feel fresh, confident and energised for the Christmas festivities ahead. Buying yourself a beauty treatment is a great form of self-care, so if you feel like you need that extra boost of confidence, indulge in a beauty treatment this winter.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a great way to rejuvenate your skin. If you’ve found yourself looking in the mirror, thinking your skin looks tired and dull this winter, microneedling might be the perfect treatment to revive your skin and leave you looking fresh and dewy for the upcoming festivities. Microneedling works by puncturing tiny holes in your skin with miniature, sterile needles. These holes cause your skin to start resurfacing and producing more collagen, an essential ingredient for youthful looking skin. Microneedling, although a fairly new skincare treatment, is now widely available at a number of clinics. If you’re ever in London, consider visiting Dr Liesel Holler’s beauty clinic Bromley for a chance to walk out with fresher, more even and younger looking skin.

A Hair Mask

There’s nothing like a good hair mask to relax you and give you stunning, noticeable results at home without breaking the bank. Hair masks work on the hair in a similar way to how face masks work on the skin – they provide a nourishing, hydrating treatment that penetrates deep into each individual hair, causing your locks to look both revived and conditioned. The benefits of hair masks include shinier hair, added moisture, reduction of frizz, breakage and damage, a healthier scalp and overall stronger hair. Hair masks are an amazing treatment that can be done in the comfort of your own bathroom – simply buy a good quality hair mask and you’re good to go! If you’re feeling extra crafty and want to make an at home face mask, ingredients like bananas, eggs, olive oil, coconut oil, aloe vera and honey all work amazingly on hair.

Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is a great way to revive dull skin throughout the winter season. The mechanical action of dry brushing helps to physically exfoliate dead skin cells, and also helps with detoxification through increasing blood flow to the skin and aiding lymphatic drainage. Dry brushing helps with good circulation and, when done correctly, can leave you feeling energised afterwards. Dry brushing, like hair masks, can be done from the comfort of your own home, so invest in a good dry brush and you’re good to go! Dry brushing should be done about one to two times a week for optimum results.

The winter months can often leave our skin feeling dull and dry and our hair feeling lifeless and lacklustre. Whether you go for a resurfacing treatment such as microneedling, or a relaxing home procedure like a hair mask or dry brushing, you’ll be sure to feel both revived and confident and ready to tackle the upcoming months head on!

5 Common Wood Types Used in Eco-Friendly Furniture

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Our ancestors had a working idea of how to use furniture since the Neolithic era, relying as they did on stone beds and benches. But it was only after the discovery of farming technologies and the permanent settlement of nomadic communities that people began populating their homes with fixtures to sit, lie down, and rest on. Wood is one furniture material that has endured for a very long time, and based on our consumption habits, the clamour for wood won’t die down anytime soon. In recent years, however, a significant trend has marked a difference in the way we source, produce, and consume wood: the demand for sustainable timber and more environmentally-friendly practices in wood manufacturing.

“Sustainable timber” earns its certification from being sourced in sustainably managed forests. That makes the procurement model much different from the decidedly unsustainable methods used in conventional logging—i.e., in which loggers harvest timber without replenishing the trees they’ve cut down. Making eco-friendly furniture out of sustainable timber yields several benefits: responsible management of our natural resources, the best usage of wood’s natural properties, and the fulfilment of the customer’s need for good-quality furniture.

That said, no wood is created equal. Though wood as a whole is easy for craftsmen to work with, is extremely pliable, and easy to move around, some wood types perform better than others for furniture—and, in addition, are less costly and less demanding to harvest. If you’re interested in buying eco-friendly chairs, tables, benches, or cabinets, find the info to identify the best wood types for timber furniture. To get you started on that task, here’s a short list of the wood types currently used in the manufacturing of eco-friendly furniture, what unique properties they possess, and why they’re ideal for more mindful wood consumption.

  1. Oak, which is a hardwood, is arguably one of the most popular varieties used in everyday furnishing. The wood is known for its durability and resilience, which means that any high-quality oak furniture you own will not need to be replaced for some time. Oak wood also sports distinctive ring and open-grain patterns, and these are often on display in wooden floorings. When buying oak products, seek out forest certification from the manufacturer, as some oak timber sourced outside of Australia is harvested from illegal logging.
  2. Pine wood is usually associated with Christmas trees, but it also makes for elegant and tasteful furniture all year round. Pine is a softwood variety that is notably fast-growing, which means that replacing pine trees is not so difficult on the forest’s management. The wood also has a closed-grain appearance, making it ideal for those who seek an “unfinished” or “natural wood” aesthetic on their furniture.
  3. Beech. Like oak, beech is a hardwood that is collected from a broad-leafed tree, and there is ample forest infrastructure that preserves the species. Beech is often incorporated into boutique furniture, as it requires a high level of craftsmanship to work with. Signature furnishings that are made out of creamy-white beech wood are straight-grain cabinets and chairs built around a natural curve.
  4. Blackwood—in particular, the Tasmanian Blackwood variety—is not necessarily all black in colour, as it also possesses traces of golden-brown or reddish grain. It is one of Australia’s most sustainable wood sources for furniture, as well as for products like guitars. This wood is also a joy for local craftsmen to work with, as it is easily manipulated with both hand tools and electric tools. You’re likely to find the beautiful grain profile and colour of blackwood in wooden flooring, coffee tables, and beds.
  5. If you want to patronise sustainable timber from Australia’s neighbours in Asia-Pacific, you might want to explore the hardy, yet lightweight bamboo. This softwood grows incredibly fast and is extremely versatile in its applications; you are as likely to find well-crafted bamboo chairs, benches, and scaffolds as you are to find bamboo chopsticks, bowls, and even spectacles. Be sure to verify the sustainability of your bamboo wood products on platforms such as the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan.

There is so much to discover in the wide and wonderful world of wood. But let’s not forget that we only have one planet from which to grow it, and that our discovery should instigate more responsible action on our part. That said, you likely won’t regret buying eco-friendly furniture for your home or your workplace—and combining an eye for style and comfort with a mind for the environment.

How to Plan For the Worst as a Mom

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Generally speaking, it’s easier to be a mom in the good times than the bad times. It’s easier to teach your children to have fun, to be curious, and to interact well with the world, than it is to teach them difficult lessons. It’s easier to plan for birthdays, Christmases and vacations than it is to plan for worst-case scenarios. But that’s not to say that planning for the worst isn’t an important part of mothering. This article outlines some ways in which you can be a great mom in the good times, and a responsible mom in the bad times, too.

Read Parenting Guides

Most parents are fully aware of their responsibilities to their children from the moment the mother falls pregnant. Instantly, they’re planning for the baby’s room, the baby’s name and the new work-life routine that they’ll have to adapt to. Less take the time to read parenting books, or to take parenting classes. But it’s in this education that you’ll learn how to keep your children healthy and happy as they grow up, and how to deal with common problems encountered by parents across the globe.

Get Good Healthcare

Children’s health generally requires more maintenance than adults. They are more frequently ill, and are more likely to require dental work, than a full-grown adult such as yourself. As such, good healthcare and frequent trips to the doctor and dentist are essential. In addition, bear in mind worst-case scenarios such as accidents, serious illnesses or chronic diseases so that you always know what to do, whatever ailment or malady affects your child as it grows up under your nurturing parenthood.

Socializing and School

While school and making friends are some of the most important parts of early childhood, they can arrive with their own difficulties. Your children may be at risk of being bullied – or, indeed, of being the bully. They might exhibit behaviors at home that suggest that they’re hurting inside as a result of their school situation. It’s your responsibility as a parent to always have established a safe space in which your children can communicate with you about things that are troubling them. That way, any unpleasantness they encounter in their interactions with others can be dealt with as quickly as possible.

Money and Assets

It should go without saying that your children rely upon your stable finances to live a safe and fulfilling early life. Whether you’re a single mom or in a couple, you’re going to need to earn the money to put food on the table, and to pay for all the other requirements that come along with having children. Be smart in your financial planning – so smart, in fact, that you’ve planned for the worst (losing your main source of income, for instance). You should also take out a life insurance policy, with a trusted person as your life insurance beneficiary, so that in the unlikely event of your premature death, your children have some financial security.

Responsible parenting is as much about firefighting as it is about making your children happy and keeping them healthy – and in this guide some of the more important worst-case scenarios are pointed out in order for you to be confident you’re doing the very most for your children
