As the second half of 2017 gets underway, we find ourselves once again wondering where the year has gone, and beginning to plan how we’re going to spend our autumn and Christmas. The last several years in Britain have seen an increase in the number of extreme weather events and the consensus is strengthening that these are a result of global warming, something that is likely to continue and will become more severe as the effects of climate change grow in scale. The term global warming is beginning to give way to the term climate change.

Many climate scientists prefer this term because the effects of human induced climate change are not limited to heat waves or increased temperatures. Many of the adverse weather events predicted by our current models of climate change involve much colder winters. For places that aren’t used to these extreme temperatures, the infrastructure required to respond to them will be lacking. Fortunately, by following some simple tips and tricks, you can keep your home warm this winter without the big environmental footprint.

Eco-Friendly Insulation

Insulation is the key to effectively heating your home and minimising wasted energy, and consequently money. The function of insulation is to trap heat within the home; think of your house as holding billions and billions of atoms, which comprise the air that we breathe and that which surrounds us. When the temperature increases, the atoms in the air begin whizzing around faster, this is essentially what the temperature of an object is; the speed with which the atoms that comprise it are moving.

If we keep the windows and doors in our home closed then the atoms will collide with them and remain in the house. If we open a window, some of those fast-moving atoms will zoom out the windows, representing a loss of heat. Even with doors and windows closed, there will always be small gaps, some microscopic, and it is these losses that insulation aims to minimise.

There are several green insulation options. The most popular type of insulation is sheep’s wool, which is an effective and affordable option.

Use Radiators Efficiently

The better your insulation, the longer any heat generated will remain in the home. Consequently, with better insulation, you need not have your radiator on for as long. If your radiator is old and ineffective then consider buying a new one from Warm Rooms.

Solar Power

Solar panels, which allow homeowners to generate some of their own energy, are becoming increasingly affordable and efficient. Investing in solar power technology is, therefore, a smart move for those looking to minimise their carbon footprint and future proof their homes.

Keeping our homes heated during the winter months without spending a fortune on energy and growing our carbon footprint is one of the many practical challenges that highlight the importance of meeting our energy requirements while limiting our environmental impact. As climate change marches on, it is now more important than ever that we all pay close attention to how much energy we use and where it comes from.

The Best Sports for Children Who Don’t Enjoy Sports

Sports are a fantastic way to get your kids in shape, but not all children enjoy playing sport. Finding suitable outdoors activities for these kinds of children can be difficult, and many parents worry about the long term health effects of their children not getting enough exercise as well as the effect that lack of participation in group activities can have on their self-esteem. There are no simple, one size fits all solutions to this problem; the most effective method of encouraging children to take up a sport, or to get sufficient outdoor exercise otherwise, will depend on the individual child in question.

One of the first mistakes many well-intentioned parents make in encouraging their child to exercise more is to select a sport or activity almost at random, assuming that ‘they will enjoy it once they get there’. This can put unnecessary pressure on the child, who might feel that they have to persevere with a sport that they don’t enjoy in order to keep their parents happy. Rather than encouraging the child to exercise more, this can have the opposite effect and put them off taking up other sports and activities in the future. It can also negatively impact their mood, which runs contrary to the intended effect of having them take up a sport to begin with.

The link between exercise and mental health has been well established; in both adults and children, it is essential that we exercise enough to maintain good physical and mental health. If your child is shy about playing sports because of self-esteem issues, then you should try to ease them into it, preferably beginning with solo activities to build their confidence and easing them towards team sports that they can play alongside friends. Below are some of the best sports for encouraging nervous or unconfident children to get some more exercise, either alone or as part of a team.

Walking and Hiking

This is one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise, and one whose value is sadly underappreciated. There are many advantages to taking up walking, especially in the context of encouraging your child to spend more time outdoors. One of the biggest advantages of walking is that it is easily scaled to suit all abilities; walks can be as long or as short as one desires and can be undertaken with an intensity suitable to the participants.

There is no competitive edge to walking, although there’s no reason you can’t add one if you think it will help, which makes it an ideal option for children who feel anxious or pressurized by competing with their peers. Although hiking and nature trails make for a wonderful outdoor experience, there is no reason that your walking activities should be confined to following a pre-determined route. In fact, some of the most rewarding days out will be those that are improvised, and the unpredictability of the experience can be very appealing to some children.

The boundary between hiking and walking is ill-defined, and the two activities are essentially the same. In general, however, hiking is considered a more intensive exercise and is usually associated with longer routes. You shouldn’t attempt anything too dramatic with your children until they have had some time to practice. Although walking doesn’t sound like an intense activity, after several miles inexperienced walkers will really be feeling the exertion.

Golf

Golf is another sport that is easily scaled to provide an appropriate level of challenge, depending on the player’s experience. You might even want to try miniature golf the first few times you take your child to play. Miniature golf tends to appeal more to children with courses that are designed with obstacles and shorter greens. The less formal atmosphere of miniature golf courses makes children feel less pressured and also allows them to feel like they are legitimately competing with their parents and have a chance of winning.

On a full course, they may well feel intimidated unless they have had previous experience. As you and your child progress to full courses, you might want to consider investing in game improvement irons which are more forgiving and make the game a little more accessible for more inexperienced players.

Swimming

Swimming allows participants to exercise multiple areas of the body at the same time and is a fantastic springboard from which children can gain the necessary experience to undertake other water-based activities. Swimming can be done either in a public pool or in natural bodies of water. If you opt for the latter option, be sure to check beforehand that the area you intend to swim in is safe and preferably has a lifeguard on duty. If your child is particularly shy then perhaps swimming in a public pool will be too intimidating. One possible solution is to enroll them in swimming lessons with a small group of similarly aged children.

Once a child has gained their confidence in the water, you can discuss other water sports that they may be interested in such as body boarding and surfing.

Cycling

Learning to ride a bike is a rite of passage that many of us can remember long into adulthood, and it’s a wonderful way to boost your child’s confidence while teaching them a new skill and getting them some more exercise of course!

As with walking, there are a number of pre-set routes one can opt to ride their bike through and these range from gentle, simple courses aimed at newcomers and children, all the way up to intense mountainous courses designed for those with plenty of hours of experience already under their belt. If your child can already ride a bike, then the hardest part is already over, and you can focus on finding the most suitable locations for you and your child to enjoy days out.

It can be hard to encourage children to take up sports and other activities, but the time and effort required to persuade them to give it a go is well worth it in the long run.

It’s always worth fixing up your heating before the cold nights set in. But this shouldn’t just mean making adjustments to your central heating. There are ways in which you can keep your home warmer for longer without having to fiddle with a thermostat. Here are just a few ways to make your home warmer for the winter.

Invest in insulation

Insulation is the main way of preventing heat loss in your home. There are many different types including loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, underfloor insulation, pipe insulation and double glazing. All of these will trap heat in your home longer. Insulation can be expensive to install but there are now grants available as provided by sites like https://energy.gov/energy-economy/funding-financing, making it more accessible to those living on a low income.

Seal up cracks

Any cracks in your walls could be letting out excess heat and potentially letting in drafts. Small cracks can easily be patched up with caulk, but for bigger cracks it could be worth calling in a professional. You’ll find companies online such as https://www.fortworthfoundation.net/repair-cracks-in-walls that can sort out these big cracks. It’s also worth considering gap between doors and doorframes and windows and window frames – you can buy draft protectors to put on these.

Buy thick curtains

Your summer sash curtains won’t help you in the winter. Thick curtains are worth buying for these cold months – when drawn they will trap heat in your home and stop cold air seeping through your window. Be aware of closing curtains over radiators as this will stop the heat getting out and warming up the rest of the room.

Keep your feet warm

If you’ve got wooden or ceramic tiled floors, you may find that your feet are getting cold in winter. Underfloor heating consumes energy and is expensive to install, whilst carpets are too permanent a solution. Instead, buy a few rugs to lay down around the house. Adding a new finish to an old wooden or tiled floor could also make it warmer to tread on.

Cover leather sofas

Leather sofas can be uncomfortable to sit on during the winter months. Sofa throws as found at sites such as http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/textiles-rugs/blankets-throws/ can be a good temporary option to keep your bum warm. You may also be able to warm up the sofa by adding a few fluffy cushions. A throw can also make a good addition to your bedding, giving you that extra layer in the winter or acting as an alternative to the duvet in summer when it’s too warm.

Foil your radiators

If your home has radiators, half of the heat could be getting lost through the wall behind it. A good trick for stopping this heat from being lost is to plate the wall behind with tinfoil. The foil will deflect the heat back into the room, so you won’t be turning up those radiators as often in an attempt to get the room warm.

Spring Cleaning That Needs Doing In The Summer

The summer time is the period of the year where you see dust particles in the air and stream of sunlight let you know where the holes in the curtains are. It’s a good time to get ahead of the autumn rush, so when it comes to keeping a clean house in the summer, it’s best to do so like you’re having a deep spring clean. Below are three tips on the main things to look out for over the summer.

pexels-photo-59598Pexels

Keep an Eye Out for Mold

The greater amount of humidity in the air during the summer means it’s easier for substances such as mold to grow in your windows and corners. For hard to reach areas, having a mold inspection will do you the world of good and often remove it for you.

Speaking of humidity, controlling the amount of it in your home in the long run is the best way to prevent mold from starting growing or expanding. Turn on fans and make sure they’re working properly and filtering out substances such as shower steam. Alternatively, you could have cooler showers to save on your bathroom ceiling.

Spruce Up the Grill

It’s no good cleaning the grill at any other time than during the summer grilling scene as these things can get dirty pretty quickly. Cleaning up a grill with a brush can be done very quickly when you know how. Take a few minutes aside after filling a bucket or sink with some soapy water and place the grates in the water and leave them about 10 minutes. Whilst the grates are soaking, get a brillo pad and rub down the insides of the grill. After the time is up and everyone else has been wiped down, scrub to your heart’s content and rinse.

If you’re not into the summer grilling scene, sprucing up the grill to sell it off if you’re just keeping it in a shed or a discarded part of the yard can put some money towards the christmas fund!

Check on the Washing Machine

During the summer the people in your family are more likely to come in with grass and dirt stains all over their clothes. After putting them through the washing machine for the 5th time at least, it’s good to check what’s going on behind your washing machine. It’s a secret a lot of people don’t realise ruins their clothes.

First of all, check on the washing machine filter. If it looks damaged it needs replacing as you don’t want any dangerous objects getting through to the pipes. If you know your pipes are over two years old, or if they’ve never been replaced before, then get some new hose pipes. Also keep an eye out for cracks and major discolouration in them.

Keeping a clean home in a time when you can work together as a family doesn’t have to take up the day or break the bank. Summer is a great time to put your feet up, so don’t work too hard!

4 Awesome Water Sports to Teach Your Kids

No matter the child, sports are great. The secret, however, is finding the sport that calls to them. You don’t want to pressure them into playing a sport that you love, but they hate. Get your kids out there and active from a young age. Even if they don’t fall get the passion for a sport like a star athlete has, you will have raised a healthy, well-rounded child. Sports increase their physical activity, their social and communication skills, their self-esteem, and provides a boost to their ability to focus. Sports are also a great, healthy way to wear out your full of energy kid.

If you live near the water, you have many amazing water sports available to teach your child. Here are the top five of them:

  1. Swimming

Every parent should teach their child to swim. Babies are naturally aquatic. Up until they are six months old they will automatically hold their breath underwater and their heartrate will slow. This means that babies have a better chance at survive being submerged longer than many adults can. Swimming for babies older than six months, however, becomes a life skill. 70% of the planet is water – it makes sense to learn how to swim!

  1. Surfing

Surfing is a sport that can take you around the world. There is a great culture around surfing. Children can learn to surf from a very young age, and many find it a lot of fun, and it is a great workout. Every surfer starts with a boogie board and rides the whitewater that hits the beach. Surfing is a very liberating sport, and nowadays you don’t even need to live next to the best waves in the world. Jetsurfny makes motorized surfboards, giving you the ability to surf anywhere, anytime.

  1. Sailing

The ultimate sport that is at the end of teaching your child to sail is racing, but as with every sport, you should only push a kid to learn a sport if your child finds it fun. If you have a boat, this one is easy – simply teach your children the ropes whenever you are on the water.

  1. Waterski/wakeboarding

This is a water sport that you can do at your cottage. It’s great fun – all you need are waterskis or a wakeboard (the snowboard of the water skiing world) and a boat. Children learning will delight in trying to stand up, and if you have siblings or friends, they will likely have a competition with one another on who can do it first.

Water sports are a lot of fun. They are also very physically demanding. Make sure that you always have a life jacket on for younger children, and keep the lifejacket on unless it is for swimming or surfing in teens and adults. There are high density foam bodysuits for extreme water sports, but most surfers know the dangers and safety measures of the ocean better than the average swimmer anyway. The water is a fun place to be. Teach your children from an early age to respect it, and let them love it.

5 Tips to building your home from the ground up

Most people who want to own their own houses want to do away with the whole construction and just buy a house that has already been built. But there is a certain allure to actually having your house built from the ground up.

While a pre-made house has its advantages, building your house from scratch house from scratch also offer some benefits. One of which is that you get to design it yourself and not be stuck with a house that might not have all the things you will need.

If you are thinking of having your house built, take note of the tips below to help the process of house building to go smoothly.

  1. Spend time refining the design – you might have to edit your design several times before coming up with your final design, but that’s okay. Spend as much time as you want in coming up with the design that will fit not only your needs but all your wants in a house. List down the necessary things that should be built. Also, consider the years to come and make some adjustments as needed. Check out some floor plans and house designs you can find online to get inspiration.
  1. Get the necessary permits – make sure you have all the permits needed for building your house. Call the city or county where you will build your house and be ready with all the information that may be asked of you. If you are confused with some of the requirements, don’t hesitate to ask questions. You want to make sure that your house is not violating any city code as that will prove to be problematic in the future.
  1. Do your research – there’s no such thing as too much preparation when building your own home. After all, this is the structure where you will spend years of your life. Of course, you would want it to be the best. You will be spending your hard-earned money to build it, so you need to do a lot of research before you start building. Research the materials you will use, the soil where your house will be built on, etc. This requires time so you should not be in a hurry to build a house. Some take up to a year of preparation and research before building.
  1. Hire your contractor or subcontractors – the choice is up to you if you would like to be the general contractor for your house project. You can just hire subcontractors to do the manual labor for you while you oversee everything. Or you can just hire a contractor to do all the work for you. Just make sure that you get reputable ones.
  1. Lay a good foundation – the foundation for your house is very important. If it is not sturdy, your house may not be a sound structure. But before laying the foundation, you need to do the excavation. For that, you would need heavy machinery. If you do not own any, check here for heavy equipment rental rates and get started in the groundbreaking for your house.

Building a house from the ground up may be laborious and prove to be a headache sometimes. But if you do the process right, it will all be worth it in the end.

Things to Consider Before Filling Out a Reverse Mortgage Application

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

These days, there are a lot of advertisements claiming that reverse mortgages are perfect for seniors on tight budgets who want to access their home’s equity with low risks. But exactly how much can a reverse mortgage benefit you? Here are some things to consider before you apply for one.

You Must Meet Eligibility Requirements for This Type of Home Loan

The first consideration is that not everyone qualifies for the type of home loan known as a reverse mortgage. It is meant only for senior citizens who are at least 62. Also, if you plan to apply with your spouse, they must meet the same age requirement.

Another requirement is that any liens or mortgages that already exist on your home have to be paid off before you apply. Alternatively, you can use part of the money you receive from the reverse mortgage to pay them, but it must be done right when you agree to the loan terms. Money left over can be used for anything you want.

A third requirement is that you must pass a credit check. The reason for that is that you will still own your home. That makes you responsible for monthly bill payments and insurance payments, rather than the lender taking responsibility for those payments. Lenders will consider you a poor risk if you have bad credit or no proof that you can afford those monthly costs.

You Can Request Your Reverse Home Loan Payments a Number of Ways

The next thing to know about these unique home loans is that you can choose how you get paid. You can take out a home equity line of credit and borrow against it when you need to. You can also choose to get one single large payment to cover things like medical bills. Many seniors choose a third option, which is monthly installments that can help with recurring bill payments like electricity and gas bills.

Reverse Mortgages Can Disqualify You from Some Assistance Programs

If you are receiving income from certain government assistance programs, how does a reverse loan work you? Well, before you sign the loan agreement, you should know that it could disqualify you from collecting SSI benefits, Medicaid, or certain other forms of assistance from the government. Although, it won’t impact your pension or Medicare benefits. Be sure to discuss possible reductions in benefits with an expert before you finalize any loan agreements.

Reverse Mortgage Terms Require You to Stay in Your Home

The way that reverse mortgages work is that you, the borrower, will receive part of your home’s equity in cash. You can repay that money at your own pace, but the longer you take the more interest you will accrue. Also, the loan will come due as soon as you die or move out of your house. Therefore, you shouldn’t apply for this sort of mortgage unless you plan to stay in your home for several years. It won’t be beneficial to you if you move out too soon.

Your Heirs May Inherit Less if You Don’t Pay Off the Home Mortgage

When considering applying for a mortgage that works this way, you also have to think about your heirs and what you want to leave for them. Remember that the lender might sell your home when you pass away, unless you pay the loan off before you die or your heirs pay it upon your death. So, if you own a home that you want to pass on to your children or grandchildren, reverse mortgages may not work out for you.

3 Signs That You May Need a Hearing Aid

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

The early treatment and prevention of hearing problems is vital in maintaining and preventing further damage to hearing health. Still, many people do not notice, or are unaware of, the early signs of hearing loss. It is important, however, that appropriate precautionary actions are taken to ensure that no further damage is done and the use of hearing aids can be very useful in pursuit of this purpose.

Here are some of the signs that’ll help you determine whether you need a hearing aid. Although you may notice a few of these signs, it is important to discuss any potential hearing loss with an audiologist for a more personalized experience and proper diagnosis.

Social Signs

When you experience hearing loss, how you interact with other people can change dramatically. Even so, initially, many people will be unaware of the degree to which their loss impacts their communication with others.

One of the more obvious signs is if others think you turn the volume up too high when watching TV or listening to music. If it is a consensus amongst your family and friends that this is a problem, then it is a good indication that you are experiencing hearing loss. For many people with hearing loss, though, simply increasing the level of overall sound will not necessarily allow them to hear better. Hearing aids like Rexton smart connect can reduce background and irrelevant noise and make voices sound clearer to help with understanding speech.

In a noisy environment, especially in public, in restaurants or at social gatherings, you may find it difficult to follow conversations. Trouble listening in environments with background noise and having to ask people to repeat themselves more often than usual is another sign of hearing loss. Again, today, hearing aids are able to differentiate between speech and noise to make conversations in these environments a lot easier for you to follow.

Emotional Signs

Hearing loss is a very sensitive topic for most people. But without treatment, it is difficult to adjust your lifestyle and can become a frustrating problem to deal with.

It typically occurs gradually, leading many to believe that their hearing is still fine. A natural response is then to become annoyed at others when you’re unable to hear them, thinking that they are mumbling or not speaking up. It is understandably irritating, especially when you believe your hearing to be fine, but is a good sign of hearing loss.

Many people tend to avoid social situations as they begin experiencing some loss. If not the stress of straining to hear others, it is the embarrassment or nervousness of meeting new people that discourage you from a conversation. You may feel that you don’t enjoy being around others as much and prefer to isolate yourself. Aid will assist you in rebuilding your confidence when it comes to conversation.

Medical Signs

Alongside more obvious causes, such as exposure to loud noise, there are less widely known causes such as a range of medical conditions as well as medication.

The risk of hearing loss has been known to be increased by other, seemingly unrelated conditions. Those who suffer from diabetes, heart disease, and circulation or thyroid problems are more susceptible to damaged hearing. Awareness of potentially medically induced hearing loss will help in your search for treatment.

Conclusion

You may be surprised to have recognized some of these signs of hearing loss. Understanding that you are experiencing some loss and require treatment is a great starting point to better hearing health and hearing loss prevention. To ensure that you find the best options to suit your lifestyle, speak with a health specialist for a customized solution.

Lots of people visit their doctors feeling unwell and come away with a high blood pressure diagnosis. Indeed, it is estimated that around 30% of the population will suffer that illness at some point. Most folks have no idea how to deal with the issue and live a healthy life. For that reason, there are some tips and tricks in this article that come from medical experts. Everyone with high blood pressure should consider this advice and put it into action as soon as possible. While these ideas might not provide a cure, they will ease the symptoms and ensure the condition doesn’t interfere with the individual’s life too much.

Try to lose some weight

Obesity is one of the prime causes of high blood pressure in human beings today. A shocking percentage of people in the US and around the world consume too many calories every day. Those with diagnoses would benefit from trying to maintain a healthy diet. There are many blogs and websites online that publish the required information. So, it’s just a case of getting some education and putting the knowledge to good use. Losing weight could:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduce strain placed on the heart
  • Combat depression
  • And much more

If anyone struggles with that process, it makes sense to contact a doctor and ask for advice. In most instances, medical professionals can give proper diet plans to their patients.

5494901051_0058dfbf1b_zImage Link

Take specialist supplements

There are many different health supplements on the market today that anyone can try. However, garlic is one of the most useful ingredients for those who want to manage their high blood pressure. Experts who created the Solaray Organic Garlic Supplement claim that many customers say they see an improvement in blood pressure readings. Of course, many other products could assist with that condition. Sufferers just need to look for brands that contain:

  • Alpha-Linolenic Acid
  • Beta-Glucans
  • Calcium
  • Cocoa
  • Fish oil

Some people might want to speak to their doctors ahead of time to ensure those supplements don’t interfere with any medication. However, in most instances, that isn’t going to happen, and those with high blood pressure are free to try any natural remedies.

Exercise as much as possible

A lack of exercise can also cause high blood pressure in some individuals. So, it’s sensible to join a gym or partake in some strenuous activities from time to time. Some people might even invest in some fitness equipment for their homes like the Smooth Fitness sitNcycle Deluxe. Just be sure to keep a blood pressure monitor handy at all times. If the individual begins to feel faint, they should check the reading to ensure they don’t require medical attention. There are lots of different ways anyone can get some exercise these days, but people might like to try:

  • Jogging
  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • And many more activities

In an ideal world, those who suffer high blood pressure should aim to work out for at least half an hour every single day. Do that for a couple of months and see if it makes a difference. People can then increase the frequency of their routines if exercise proves to have a positive effect.

Limit the amount of alcohol consumed

Alcohol is one of the worst substances in the world for raising blood pressure levels. Doctors will recommend that all patients stop drinking immediately after receiving their diagnosis. However, for most people, that is never going to happen. For whatever reason, modern society is built on occasions where alcohol consumption has become customary. So, the best course of action is to reduce the intake as much as possible. Having a couple of drinks at Christmas isn’t going to change much, but people with blood pressure issues shouldn’t drink every day. Some ideas to assist with the process include:

  • Replacing drinks with non-alcoholic alternatives
  • Drinking grape wine instead of beer
  • Avoiding spirits like whiskey altogether

If individuals with high blood pressure use the advice from this page, they should find it much easier to manage their conditions. When all’s said and done, sometimes there is nothing the patient can do to improve their situation. That is often the case with people who are in the latter stages of life and have many other medical conditions. Still, almost everyone can change their diet and eat more fruits and vegetables with their meals. So, use some common sense, research the subject as much as possible, and take affirmative action. That is the best way to combat any illness without the use of prescribed medication. Of course, many people with high blood pressure would benefit from that too.

Who Can Help You if You Have an Accident?

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

There are many things in life that people would rather not think are going to happen. Becoming sick, or seeing the death of a loved one, are just two of them. However, there are other things that can happen without any warning or influence from you.

If you or someone you love becomes involved in an accident, it can be distressing for everyone involved, especially the family. Although this can be a scary and intense situation, it is important that everyone becomes aware of what happened and more importantly, why.

There are times when you will need to think about engaging someone who can help you if you or your loved one has been injured. However, trying to find the right person can be difficult; there are many lawyers out there, and you need one that can understand and deal with your situation. Here are some tips on how you can effectively seek out a lawyer that can help you with a claim.

Time Limits
Despite the fact that it is a distressing time, there are, unfortunately, time limits on lawsuits, so you need to be aware of this. The time you have to file your lawsuit depends on the state you are in, but it can range from 1 to 6 years.
It might seem like a long time, but it can go by quickly, so you need to think about it well in advance. It isn’t just the amount of time you need to file the claim; you also need to do your research about who you are going to choose as your lawyer. It is a process that shouldn’t be hurried or done on a whim; you need someone to represent you that can do the right job.

Types of Attorney
You might think that all lawyers practice in the same fields, however, this is not the case. Just like a medical professional, some lawyers decide to specialize in certain types of cases, so you need to choose the best one for your situation.

Personal injury attorneys are trained in the specialties of injury and the legal system that revolves around it. They will have knowledge and experience that other lawyers outside the field may lack. For example, personal injury lawyers will often have trial experience whereas a real estate attorney may not. They will also have an understanding of medical diagnosis and the impact those have on a person’s life.

Another area they will have expertise in is negligence law and the laws that relate to it. It is because of these factors that you need to have someone with the knowledge and experience to tackle these types of cases.

Make a List of the Factors Involved
Before you go searching for a lawyer, you need to think about what factors they need to meet to become a good candidate. There is no use just picking a few names at random as you need to see them face to face as well.
That leads to the first part;

Location: You need to look for lawyers that are in the state you were injured. It is because you need to make sure they know all the local laws and rules in that state. If you have someone from out of the state, you may end up missing something or not doing things in the right timeframe.
Practice: Have you checked to see if they specialize in personal injury law? If you haven’t then you need to double check your selection. It is far better to choose a lawyer that has specialized knowledge. It can become quite specialized, for example, if you were injured by a defective product, there are lawyers that could have experience in this type of case.
Reputation: Find out about the lawyer’s reputation in your community or through other people. Has anyone you know, used this person before? How was their experience of working with them? It isn’t just about how they treat you; it is also about their success rate and how they work with other people that are important.
Years in Practice: Although all lawyers need to start somewhere, you want someone that has had at least some experience in the types of case you have. It will give you confidence in them, and they will have confidence in working with this type of case.
Disciplinary Record: Check that the lawyer has a good standing with other clients and the judicial system. See if anyone has filed a complaint against them, or if they have ever been suspended or disbarred. You may find lawyers with complaints against them, as some people may complain for no valid reason. However, you need to make sure that there are no upheld complaints.
Trial Experience: An important factor if the case goes to court is a trial experience. Being involved in a trial is a difficult thing that takes practice and knowledge to do correctly. The more experience a lawyer has with trials, the better it will be for your case.

The list you make can be as long or as short as you like, and it can have any factor you want. However, it needs to have at least these basic questions answered, or you might not be able to choose the right lawyer.

Personal Referrals
One way that you can shorten your list of candidates is to ask your friends or family if they have anyone they would recommend. Someone may have used a lawyer in a previous personal injury case and had a good experience.

There is little to beat word of mouth, so you should take this as a high factor in your choice. Similarly, you should ask if there is anyone that they wouldn’t recommend. Ask them why they had a bad experience and thought about whether this was a personal issue or a more general problem. If this lawyer is on your list of candidates, then you should think again.

Research, Your Candidates
Use the power of the internet to research your candidates and see what they are doing. There may be news items or other articles that they have been featured in that could give you a good insight into their practice.

Do not forget to check out their websites as well; you can often get a lot of information from their site including testimonials and any awards or associations that they belong to in the local area. Firms such as Babcock Partners have all their information and awards on their site so that you can see it all at a glance.

A lawyer’s website will also give you information about the type of cases they take on and their success rate. This can be a good way to rule out any firms that don’t cover your type of personal injury.

Call Your Candidates
The next step is to give all your candidates a call to have a quick chat and make a booking. You can usually gain a lot of insight into a company by the way they deal with clients on the phone.

Are they pleasant when they answer the phone? It is a small thing, but it can be indicative of the way the rest of the company operates. Also, are they keen to speak to you and get you to speak to a lawyer? If they don’t want to answer questions or try to put you off, then maybe they are not the firm for you.

How long does it take them to book you in for an appointment? For new clients, in particular, you would expect that they would want to speak to you as soon as possible to try and win your case. If they make you book well in advance, then it might be that they are not interested, or they are too busy to deal with your case effectively.

Arrange a Meeting
Finally, you have weeded down your list to maybe three or four candidates. Now, you have to go and meet them to see what they can do for you. Prepare a list of questions that you should ask about the firm and the case so that you are completely satisfied with what they can do.

Take some notes and some of the evidence with you so that you can discuss the case with them. Be prepared to answer any questions they have, but there is a lot of information they can get once they have agreed to take the case.

Just because they agree to take your case, it doesn’t mean that you have to pick them. Tell them that you will let them know so you can visit all the firms on your list before you make a decision.

After all the interviews and decisions, you should now have a good idea who you want to represent you in your injury case. It can take a long time to get through the process, but in the end, you will be happy and confident in your choice of lawyer.
