20150415_064522 (1024x576)Did you know that there are many behind the scenes tours available at each of the Walt Disney World Parks?  Last week while part of a blogger press trip for Disneynature’s new movie that is now in theaters, Monkey Kingdom, I went on the Backstage Tales Tour at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  On the tour we had the opportunity to take a fascinating look at how Disney Cast Members tend to the 1,500-plus inhabitants of Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. We toured the facilities where the animals are cared for and learned so much about the park, the animals, and even things about Walt Disney himself.  During our tour we were given headsets to wear so we could easily hear our tour guides as we walked along the tour.  Participants in this tour are given special Backstage Tales Tour water bottles as a keepsake and to use to bring water with them on the tour.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom park is a lushly landscaped oasis that’s home to more than 1,500 animals representing 250 species. During the Backstage Tales tour, you’ll learn all about the unique challenges involved in helping them thrive as you:

  • Explore backstage animal-housing areas.
  • Visit the Animal Nutrition Center and see how over 4 tons of food are prepared and distributed each day.
  • Tour the state-of-the-art veterinary hospital, where you may even witness animals being treated.
  • Stop by the Animal Programs Administration building and learn how Disney promotes global wildlife conservation and animal well-being.

Cameras aren’t allowed in the backstage areas so I don’t have many pictures to share but here are 10 things I learned on Disney’s Animal Kingdom Backstage Tales Tour. 20150415_074010 (1024x576)

20150415_074917 (576x1024)

  • Walt Disney would go outside under a “dreaming” tree and sketch and dream as a child. He loved animals so he wanted to capture the true nature of animals in movies. He brought live animals into the studio for the artists to observe for movies like Bambi so they would be drawn more authentically.  He wanted to connect people and animals.
  • In parts of Animal Kingdom the ground rises so guests have to walk up a bit of an incline.  This was done purposely to slow guests down so they could take in scenery.
  • Disney conservationists work with the people of the lands where the animals are from to help in their home countries.
  • Animal Kingdom was designed so guests would have to cross bridge to each new land. Each new land was given an authentic feel with authentic plants.
  • In the aviary nest boxes simulates cavities in trees for birds to nest. Amazingly the birds are counted several times per day with binoculars.  That’s A LOT of birds to count!  They are banded for identification.  A clicker is used to get the birds to come. They are trained to come for food with a click and this helps get them to come to be counted, too.
  • Even the cell tower is themed and camouflaged as a tree .
  • The Kilimanjaro Safari is bumpy on purpose. The designers wanted it to be more authentic so they brought a beverage cup filled with liquid with them when they tested it out.  If the liquid spilled then it was bumpy enough.
  • The animals that Disney works with aren’t forced to do anything.  If they don’t want to come, they aren’t forced to.  They are trained with food to do things such as come, walk back, go left, go right, be still, and other tasks.  These trained tasks all help teach the animals to do things that they would need to do during a veterinary exam so they will willingly work with the trainers and vets.  Another example of this is that the kimono dragons are taught to stand up and put their feet up on their cage from a young age.  This way when the trainers, vets, etc. needs to check their feet or trim their nails the animal will willingly give their feet.  The rhinos were even taught to urinate on command so they can get a sterile sample.
  • All the animals are given different types of enrichment items like sticks, toys, etc. to keep them happy and entertained.
  • There are 2.6 elephants at Animal Kingdom. That’s 2 male and 6 female in zoo shorthand.
  • Some animals at Animal Kingdom are on birth control just like humans such as a patch or depo shot!
  • Disney’s horticulturists help pollinate with feather dusters to grow gourds and other plants.
  • Elephants eat about 30 bales of hay a day each!
  • Animals at Animal Kingdom eat produce from the same high quality source as humans. If humans wouldn’t eat it they don’t serve it to the animals.  It looked delish!
  • Elephants are pregnant for almost 2 years at a time!  I’m glad I’m not an elephant!
  • No cameras, video equipment or cell phones may be used while backstage. However, photography is allowed and encouraged in non-backstage areas.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Backstage Tales Tour is $90 per person (additional park admission required).  A portion of the tour proceeds is donated to the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.

20150416_091243 (1024x576)Wilderness Explorers is a FREE program at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  Participants go around from station to station earning badges as they go.  We had the opportunity to learn about the program first hand on our press trip for the Monkey Kingdom movie that is now open in theaters.

Here are some things we learned:20150416_090046 (2) (1024x704)

  • The Wilderness Explorers Program has been around for 15 years but has grown in size from 6 stations to 31 badges to earn.
    20150416_091630 (576x1024)
  • The target audience for the Wilderness Explorers Program is families with kids from 7-10 years old but families with older or younger children will also enjoy it.  We participated in the program without children and had a blast collecting badges so even if you don’t have children with you, grab a Wilderness Explorer’s Handbook and earn some badges.
    Wilderness Explorer Program
  • The beauty of the Wilderness Explorers Program is that it DOES NOT involve technology.  It uses cast members who present information and engage participants as they explore the park going from station to station.
    20150416_092620 (576x1024)
  • Participants are given a Wilderness Explorer Handbook at one of 9 Troop Leader Stations.  They are located all over the park so you don’t have to be in the front of the park to get started.
  • Exploring is a life long adventure.  Most participants average about 12 badges a day and come back multiple times with their books to earn all the badges.
  • The Wilderness Explorers Program connects families to nature and each other.  It shows them parts of the park they might not have seen and gets parents involved in the learning, too.
  • There are 3 types of cast members who give out badges- Trooper Leaders (interns who are trained in education or science), Merchandise Cast Members (who share all about various authentic merchandise that is available in the park), and Cultural Cast Members (who share about their native countries).20150416_093425 (576x1024)
  • Troop Leaders and other representatives don’t just give out badges, they engage the participants, ask them questions about what they have learned, and teach them new things, too.
    20150416_093601 (576x1024)
  • Find cast members with orange satchels or look for signs with W/E on it to find badges to earn.
    P1240383
  • When you earn all the badges you earn a special Senior Wilderness Explorer badge.

20150416_101056 (576x1024)The Wilderness Explorers Program at Disney’s Animal Kingdom encourages families and children to experience the park in a whole new way! As Wilderness Explorers, Guests participate in a variety of activities, such as hiking the trails, digging for fossils, studying gorilla behaviors, listening to animal sounds, learning how veterinarians care for animals, and interacting with Cultural Cast Members representing different countries in Africa and Asia. Completing each activity allows you to earn a sticker badge in their very own Wilderness Explorers handbook, which can be picked up from any of the nine Troop Leader locations around the park. Explorers can earn up to 31 badges, but are encouraged to earn these badges in multiple visits, since exploring is a lifelong adventure! Completing all 31 badges gives guests the honorary title of Senior Wilderness Explorer. The program’s goal is to connect guests with animals, conservation and culture while spending time together as a family, during and even after their visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Wild Africa Trek 004I love animals so I was especially thrilled when I was invited on a press trip for the release of Disneynature’s newest movie, Monkey Kingdom, which is now in theaters.  If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure to check it out opening week (April 17-23rd, 2015) because a portion of your ticket price will go towards helping animals.  As part of the press trip, 24 bloggers and I had the opportunity to experience Animal Kingdom’s Wild Africa Trek.  I looked up the Wild Africa Trek on Disney’s website and I was immediately excited to learn about everything the trek would entail.  The Wild Africa Trek is a VIP guided 3 hour adventure.  I had no idea such an amazing tour existed at Animal Kingdom.  WARNING~ Lots of pictures to follow but with views like this you can understand the need for so many pictures!
Wild Africa Trek 005 (1) (1024x680)You can see us wearing our vests and harnesses here.

At the start of the trek we were all geared up in a special vest and harness to keep us safe.  We were given water bottles to fill with water and connect to our vests that we were able to keep after the trek.  It is hot in Florida so the water was much needed.  Once everyone was securely fitted with their gear, we were given wireless headsets so we could easily hear our tour guides, and we set out on our trek.  The first part of the trek is a walking tour where we saw lots of birds and other animals.  Our guides gave us lots of information about the animals and everything we were seeing as well as Disney’s conservation efforts and ways we could help.  One initiative I found interesting is called Dogs Saving Cats. In Namibia farmers are killing cheetah because they are killing their livestock.  In this initiative Anatolian shepherds and Kangal dogs are given to farmers to protect their livestock.  Cheetahs are afraid of the dogs so they won’t go near them and kill the livestock. They teach the farmers wildlife management and the value of biodiversity while addressing human-wildlife conflict.  This is just one of the ways Disney helps animals.

This tour is a bit rigorous so you must have physical stamina, be comfortable with heights, and be able to walk along small hills, foliage and unsteady rope bridges on this tour.  I was impressed that our gear and harnesses were checked several times as we went along to make sure that everything was fitting properly to keep us safe.

P1240429We saw all sorts of creatures big and small along our trek!

We walked for a bit and stopped to watch a hippo getting fed.  I wouldn’t want to get in that mouth!

Wild Africa Trek 015 (1024x680)

Then came my favorite part, the part I had been waiting for……the wooden rope bridge.  Yes, this bridge.  The one that goes right over hippos and crocodiles!
Wild Africa Trek 021 (1024x680)Can you see how focused and determined I was?  I was a little nervous at first, but crossing the bridge was really easier than I had thought it would be.

Wild Africa Trek 076 (680x1024)

Wild Africa Trek 078Pausing for a photo here.  One of the most amazing things about the Wild Africa Safari is that a trained photographer will take pictures throughout the adventure of you, the animals, and anything else you would like them to take pictures of.  At the end of your expedition, you’ll receive a photo code that you can use to access and download images taken during your Wild Africa Trek experience.  This is all included in the price of your trek.  It was so nice not having to worry about getting in pictures.

Wild Africa Trek 090 with wordsHere I am giving a thumbs up when I completed both bridges.

Yes, those are lots of crocodiles directly under us.

P1240436Such a pretty view from above.
P1240465Of course this is the view looking down.
P1240468Open wide!

Wild Africa Trek 104After you cross the bridge you have the opportunity to go out on a ledge overlooking the crocodiles for a closer look.  But don’t worry, you’re harnessed in and tethered so you can’t get too close to the edge.

Next we got onto a rugged safari vehicle over an open savanna teeming with native African creatures.  We were given special chilled washcloths that were infused with essential oils to help cool us off which was a nice touch.  On the safari vehicle there were also binoculars if we wanted to use them to see the animals out of the savanna.

Here are just some of the animals we saw during our Wild Africa Trek:

Wild Africa Trek 011With all the walking we built up quite an appetite.  Fortunately we were treated to some delicious, African inspired snacks.  There was a nice variety and they were able to accommodate vegetarians and people with food allergies.  I was really impressed with how accommodating Disney’s food service was our entire trip for people with special dietary needs.

Wild Africa Trek 133Yes we were glistening by this point.  Ok who am I kidding, we were sweaty by this point but look how pretty the whole food set up was.

Wild Africa Trek 148

Wild Africa Trek 167Here are our amazing, knowledgeable tour guides.  They knew so much about the animals and also taught us about Disney’s conservation programs, how Disney is helping animals all around the world and lots more.  One of the first things we learned really stuck with me:

We don’t inherit this land from our parents, we borrow it from our children.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • All things need to be attached to you or stored in the lockers provided by the attraction.  They have cords to attach your cellphone, sunglasses, etc. to your body so they won’t drop down into the water.  If you want to bring a camera it must be attached to you or around your neck with a strap.  I brought my digital camera with me but chose to leave my DSLR at home because I didn’t want the extra weight around my neck.  Since the photographer was taking pictures, too, I didn’t have to worry about missing anything.  It is really personal preference.  Some of my blogger friends didn’t bring anything with them.  Others used DSLR cameras, cellphones (with a strap attached to their wrists), and a few even wore GoPro cameras.
  • Wild Africa Trek is $189 to $249 per person, plus tax depending on the season.  This DOES NOT include the required separate admission ticket to Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park.
  • You should be in good health and free from high blood pressure; heart, back or neck problems; motion sickness or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not participate.
  • Guests under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a participating adult (18 years of age or older).
  • Participants must be 8 years of age or older and at least 48 inches (122 cm) tall.
  • Participants must be between 45 and 300 lbs with the harness gear on. The safety harnesses used for this experience may prohibit guests of certain body shapes or sizes from participating.
  • Recommended attire includes shorts or pants and a comfortable shirt. Closed-toe shoes with a back strap or hiking boots are required. No flip-flops will be allowed. Skirts or dresses are not recommended.
  • Complimentary lockers for your belongings will be provided. You will also receive a safety vest and wireless headset so that you can hear your guide at all times. Cameras are allowed as long as they can be securely fastened to the vest.
  • Excursion occurs rain or shine, with the exception of severe weather or lightning.
  • Advanced reservations required.  There are multiple excursions per day so for reservations call (407) WDW-TOUR or (407) 939-8687.
  • Tour itinerary, content, duration and availability are subject to change without notice.
  • You will forfeit the entire price of your tour if you no-show or cancel within 2 days of your reservation.

Roam with wild animals on this 3-hour safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park (separately priced tour). Wild Africa Trek offers Guests the perfect opportunity to explore the Safi River Valley and discover animals of nearly every variety in an uninhibited, natural environment.

DIY is a great way to reduce the costs of decorating your home – as long as you do them right! It doesn’t matter whether it is a large project or small; there are opportunities to make savings everywhere. Let’s take a look at some of them now, and get ready to get your hands dirty!

Search Online

Scared of DIY? Worried you will mess up? Well, there are hundreds of websites out there that offer free tutorials for anyone that wants to look. Have a peek at sites like Family Handy Man for some inspiration. There really is no excuse. If you want to start making improvements to your home, sites like these are all there waiting for you!

Get A Good Toolkit

No DIY enthusiast should be without a toolkit they can blame things on when things go wrong. You will need a fair amount to get you started, and spending a little more on quality tools will always be more cost-effective – and useful – in the long term. There’s a good list of essential tools for homeowners over at Houzz.com. Don’t forget the importance of looking after your tools. Clean and dry them well after you have used them to help their lifespan.

Start Small

It goes without saying that you should take things steady when you first start DIY projects. Learn essential skills on small projects first. You will find this will be a good basis to work from when you start on the bigger tasks.

Be Creative

The key to good DIY is to take those small essential skills and turn them into something creative. You don’t have to spend a lot of money for amazing results. Use your favorite home design resources for inspiration. The idea here is to borrow ideas rather than recreate them. That’s the great thing about do-it-yourself; you can get stunning results that are completely original to you.

Know Your Limits

When you are just starting out in DIY, it is really important to know your limits. Some things just should not be touched. Hire a professional electrician for any rewiring work that involves more than fitting a new plug. And if you are tiling your bathroom, have an emergency plumbing company on speed dial in case you mess up a water pipe.

Get A First Aid Kit

Accidents happen, unfortunately. And when you are just getting started, they will happen more often. The least you can expect is a nasty bang on the thumb and a few splinter. But you could cut yourself or slip and cause serious damage. Make sure you are prepared by keeping your first aid box well stocked.

Show Off

Your very first DIY effort may not be the nicest thing in the world to look at. But you made it. It came from your hands so you should be proud, no matter how many mistakes you have made. Don’t be afraid to show it off to family and friends. Even the experts amongst them. They could end up giving you even more tips!

Hope you enjoyed this little guide and can now get started on making home improvements yourself. Catch you next time, when maybe you could share your latest creations!

Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom Review In Theaters April 17th

Disclosure- I was invited on an all expense paid trip to Orlando on behalf of Disney for the #MonkeyKingdomEvent.  All opinions are 100% my own. image003 (7) I had the opportunity to screen Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom while I was in Orlando for the Monkey Kingdom event with 24 other bloggers.  Before I tell you all about the movie let me start by sharing some total monkey cuteness with you. image011 (3)

Monkeys are my favorite animal so I was beyond excited when I heard that Disneynature was making a movie all about monkeys.  Monkey Kingdom tells the story of Maya, a monkey and her struggles to raise her baby boy while being one of the lower members of her group of moneys social structure. Life is hard for her as most of the other monkeys are higher up on the social structure than she is.  They get to live higher than her in the trees and get the better foods and shelter.  Maya on the other hand gets the scraps left on the bottom of the trees.  She wants to provide the best she can for her son but it isn’t easy.  I was really amazed how relatable her story is and how much human emotion monkeys show.  You could take the story of Maya and turn it into a story about a human single mother raising her baby son on her own without the father around and living as part of the lower class.  It is a story that plays out everyday for many mothers around the world.  Human or monkey, mothers just want to provide the best for their children and do whatever they can to provide for them.  You’ll be rooting for Maya and her son, Kip throughout the movie.  You’ll also see lots of other types of animals throughout the movie.

Tina Fey does a great job narrating this movie.  She captures the audience and throws in some cute jokes as well.  Monkey Kingdom is the perfect family movie, especially any animal lovers.  It is a great movie for all ages.  There are 2 scenes where one of the other monkeys are killed by predators but it true Disney fashion nothing gruesome is shown.  It’s handled very well as to not upset young children, it’s a Disney movie after all.  My girls are very sensitive to things like that and I am sure that they’ll be ok with those parts of the movie when I take them hopefully this weekend.

See Monkey Kingdom opening week (April 17 – 23) and Disneynature will make a donation in your honor to protect monkeys and other endangered species in their natural habitats.

I have gotten together with several other bloggers to give away a very special necklace in honor of Monkey Kingdom.  We’re giving away an Alex Woo Little Activist Love Monkey in Sterling Silver.  It’s so adorable!  I sooooo want one of these necklaces.  Good luck!

Life is an adventure for Maya, the clever and resourceful blonde-bobbed monkey in “Monkey Kingdom,” Disneynature’s new feature film set among ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia. Maya’s world is forever changed when she welcomes her son, Kip, into her complicated extended family. Like all families, Maya’s has more than its share of colorful personalities—and she’s determined to give her son a leg up in the world. When their longtime home at Castle Rock is taken over by powerful neighboring monkeys, Maya’s whole family is forced to relocate, and she uses her street smarts and ingenuity to lead them to untapped resources amidst strange new creatures and unsettling surroundings. Ultimately, they will all have to work together to reclaim Castle Rock, where Maya can hopefully realize her dreams for her son’s future.

With music from award-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” “Shrek” movies), Disneynature’s eighth True Life Adventure—the follow-up to 2014’s “Bears”—swings into theaters April 17, 2015.

MONKEY KINGDOM opens in theatres everywhere on April 17th! conservation internationalProjects support programs across Indonesia, Cambodia, and Sri Lanka. Conservation International will: 1) Protect monkeys and other endangered species 2) Save and restore forest habitats 3) Partner with and support local communities

Further activities in Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Indonesia will include researching, rescuing and rehabilitating monkeys, patrolling protected areas which serve as important habitats for monkeys and other species, planting trees and supporting community education and forest-friendly jobs.

Indonesia

Located just 80 km from the bustling city of Jakarta is a region known as Gedepahala. Gedepahala has some of the last remaining forests (135,000 ha) on the island of Java, Indonesia. It is an area rich in biodiversity and beauty, and home to a critically endangered monkey called the Javan gibbon. This area is also part of a watershed that helps to filter and provide a reliable flow of water to over 30 million people. Increased demand for forest resources has caused massive deforestation and degradation, endangering species and threatening vulnerable local communities who depend upon the forests’ resources and services for survival.

Cambodia

Unlike much of Southeast Asia, nearly 60 percent of Cambodia’s forests are still intact with plentiful shelter, food and fresh water. Its forests are home to many different types of monkeys, as well as hundreds of other species, but rapid deforestation and degradation of forest habitat requires fast action to protect these globally important species. Conservation International is working to protect 455,000 hectares of intact forest habitat in the Central Cardamom Mountains (400,000 ha) and Veun Sai (55,000 ha) regions, two critical habitats for the most threatened primate species. This work includes supporting teams of community and forest rangers to patrol forests, alert officials about illegal logging activity and explain to people why the forest needs to remain intact and why they should not hunt primates.

Sri Lanka

Located off the southern tip of India, the tropical island of Sri Lanka has attracted visitors for centuries with its natural beauty. It is currently experiencing rapid urbanization and expansion, which is destroying its forests. As a consequence all of its 12 primates and numerous other mammals, bird, reptiles and amphibians, all unique to the island, are increasingly threatened. Conservation International has been awarding small grants through its Primate Action Fund to stem the decline of the western purplefaced langur, considered one of the world’s 25 most endangered primates.

The Ultimate Checklist For Home Movers

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

The best way to move home is to start early and finish quickly. And although it may seem like a big ask, if you follow this checklist you should be well on your way to a trouble-free move. Let’s get started straight away.

7210018990_0333bfd565_z[Image from Flickr]

Two Months To Go

All successful home moves happen with a good plan. Get yours ready with at least a couple of months to spare. Call a moving company. Good movers get booked up fast, and this is one thing you don’t want to leave until the last minute.

Next, it’s time to have a look at everything you own. Do you really need to take it with you? If not, get rid of it. Give it away, sell it, send it to a charity store. If you don’t do it now, you won’t have time in the future.

One Month To Go

Pack non-essentials first. Anything that you don’t need can be packed up and made ready a month before your move. Don’t forget to label all boxes.

Contact companies such as banks, insurance companies, phone companies and even let the mail office know. Do it early enough, and you can just forget about it. Do it too late, and you will forget to do it at all.

One Week To Go

Contact everyone involved in the move. You don’t want last-day surprises and a week will give you the chance to make a backup plan. Start contacting your utility providers. Utility companies will need time to organize a switch over when you get to your new place. Aim to give them at least 48 hours notice.

Pack the majority of your possessions. Keep back a few changes of clothes for each family member and some cooking and eating utensils. You should also arrange childcare with a family member at least a week in advance. Have a backup plan just in case of illness.

One Day To Go

You should have finished packing up by now, bar a few basics for wearing, washing and eating. Do a final check and make sure everything has labels. Go to the garden and get all your outside furniture together in one place. Disassemble anything that might be problematic to get into a truck.

Give the moving company a ring to confirm one last time. They will let you know when they will arrive, and ask you any final questions.  The last thing to do today is simple. It goes without saying that disasters can happen on any day, let alone moving day. Make sure your phone is charged enough to use it at any time.

Moving Day

Get up early and have a hearty breakfast. Drop the kids off, come back and start going through the house room by room. Any bed linen you have been using over the last week should be bagged up. Mattresses should be clear, and beds may need to be disassembled.

Once the movers arrive, help them if they need it. It will be quicker if you get stuck in. Once finished, check the house one last time.

Say Goodbye!

If you have followed this checklist, you should now be well on your way to your new home. Unpacking will be easy if you have labeled everything. Now it’s just a case of decorating your new home! Good job!

Interview With Disneynature Ambassador, Dr. M Sanjayan- Monkey Kingdom

Disclosure- I was invited on an all expense paid trip to Orlando on behalf of Disney for the #MonkeyKingdomEvent.  All opinions are 100% my own.

dr sanjayanIt is always an amazing experience to learn first hand how a movie was made from the people that made it.   Today we had the honor of meeting and interviewing Disneynature Ambassador, Dr. M. Sanjayan.  He was so easy to talk to and a very engaging speaker.  You could tell how passionate he is about his work with animals and conservation in general.  He sat down with us at the Sanaa restaurant in Animal Kingdom Lodge to talk about the new Disneynature movie, Monkey Kingdom.  (Keep an eye out next week for my review post on Sanaa but I will tell you it was DELISH!)

DR. M. SANJAYAN (Disneynature Ambassador) is executive vice president and senior scientist for Conservation International. The global conservation scientist, writer and Emmy®-nominated news contributor focuses on the connection between nature and human well-being. He serves on Conservation International’s senior leadership team as executive vice president and senior scientist.

Sanjayan holds a doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a research faculty appointment at the University of Montana. His peer-reviewed scientific work has been published in journals including Science, Nature and Conservation Biology, and his expertise has attracted national media coverage in Outside, Time, Men’s Journal, National Geographic, AFAR, Grist and The New York Times. He is also the co-editor of Connectivity Conservation (Cambridge University Press).

Sanjayan is the host of “EARTH A New Wild,” the 2015 PBS television series. Filmed in 29 countries and produced by National Geographic and Passion Pictures, the series reveals how humans are inextricably linked with wild nature.

Sanjayan’s broad-reaching television experience also includes “Years of Living Dangerously,” the 2014 Emmy®-winning series that examines the human impact of climate change, as well as numerous documentaries, including “Planet Earth: The Future” (BBC), “Expedition Alaska” (Discovery Channel), and “Mysteries of the Shark Coast” (featured during shark week on Discovery Channel). Most recently, he hosted the critically acclaimed four-part series on energy, “Powering the Future” (Discovery Channel).

Sanjayan also serves as a science and environment contributor to CBS News. His 2013 “CBS Evening News” report on elephant poaching in Kenya earned an Emmy® nomination in the investigative journalism category. His guest appearances include NBC’s “Today,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “NBC Nightly News,” CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, and he is a featured contributor to the BBC’s “Power of Nature” series.

Sanjayan is a Clinton Global Initiative Senior Advisor, a Catto Fellow at the Aspen Institute and a member of National Geographic Society’s Explorer’s Council—a distinguished group of top scientists, researchers and explorers who provide advice and counsel to the Society across disciplines and projects.

Sanjayan writes for Orion magazine, The Huffington Post and Fortune China, and he posts frequently from his expeditions at @msanjayan.

Here are just a few of the fascinating things we learned from Dr. Sanjayan:

  • It took 3 years to film Monkey Kingdom.  The 80 minute film was shot over a period of 1,000 days.
  • There was a team of 6 primary production people and about 12 assistants in Sri Lanka.
  • For every minute you see in the movie, they filmed for 10 days!
  • The best light is at dawn and dusk so they worked for long days.  They started before sunrise and worked filming until late in the evening.
  • The magic is in the editing.
  • The production crew rented a house in Sri Lanka to live while they were filming.
  • This group of monkeys has been studied for over 40 years by a primate specialist.
  • A few other monkeys were followed and filmed but they knew early on that Maya was a special monkey and the story would be about her.
