Beyond Excuses – When Life Gets In The Way Of Your Health Goals

Lots of people are actively pursuing healthy lifestyles. Most of these are driven by goals. Perhaps you want to lose twenty pounds or fit into a size twelve by Christmas Day? Goals and objectives are a great way to focus your mind on achieving something you really want. They motivate you to do what it takes to get there. Sure, we’ve all made a couple of excuses along the way. We’ve all had that chocolate bar because the fridge was bare. And we’ve all had to miss a gym class because the dog was sick!

Unfortunately, beyond the usual excuses, there are some pretty serious reasons why you can’t meet your goals. Life gets in the way. Your priorities change. Things go wrong. When this happens, it can have quite a significant impact on your life. How you manage things from here is important.

Accidents happen. You’re working really hard to be healthy and fit but in the blink of an eye and accident has stopped you in your tracks. Broken bones, sprains, or even more serious injuries will need you to rest up. Any exercise plan you had will definitely have to be put on hold. However, if you take care to adjust your diet and continue light exercise, you may not have to worry about losing the progress you had made.

Illness is another one of life’s unexpected interruptions. A touch of cold or flu can be enough to leave you curled up on the sofa for days. It’s important to eat well during times of illness so don’t be tempted to go for the comfort foods! Of course, there are serious illnesses that can affect your health and well-being for the long term. Perhaps you need medication or even surgery? An adjustment to your weightloss or fitness plan may be essential here.

doctor-medical-medicine-health-42273Picture from Pexels

Any medication or surgery will affect your body in many ways. Aside from the obvious worry affecting your sleep, side-effects can be quite unpleasant. If the doctors you trust get things wrong, then your recovery time may be hindered. If you feel your doctor has caused more problems than were expected, it may be a good idea to find the best medical malpractice attorneys you can speak to. The sooner you get these issues resolved, the better for your health.

Your job can also get in the way of your healthy lifestyle plans. We always need to prioritise work – after all, no job means no money. If you get that promotion or that transfer, your life could change a lot. You might work different hours, or need to commute much further to your new office. So much for cycling to work!

The best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle is to accept your goals may need to be adjusted. Even if you have a short-term goal, life can easily get in the way. Things can go wrong. Don’t give up on your ambition for fitness and good health. Simply set yourself new, achievable goals that will give you the push you need to carry on, no matter what. Stay healthy.

Flash Gifts for Louder-than-Life Men

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

We all know a man who pays more attention to their appearance than almost anyone else. Women might have a reputation for caring about their looks, but some men can preen with the best of them. Whether they like to be suave, suited and booted or they prefer a louder, flashier style, there’s no reason they shouldn’t get to work on their appearance as much as anyone else. If there’s a man in your life who loves the finer things available, choosing a gift for them can be intimidating. You don’t want to get it wrong, after all. But there are lots of things you can consider to make him happy.

Smart Tie Pins and Cufflinks

Some men prefer a more buttoned-up style than others. For those suave James Bond types, you can’t go wrong with some sort of accessory they can use for their sharp suits. Even without a suit jacket, a tie pin or a pair of cufflinks can add a stylish edge to an outfit. Plus, they can be full of personality. They don’t have to be plain, with lots of different styles available for modern gents. Whether you get them a tie pin shaped like an arrow or a pair of cufflinks with little mechanical cogs, you’re sure to find something that will finish off his outfit.

A Watch with Bling

Watches are the ideal accessory for the modern, fashionable man. They come in all sorts of styles, from smartwatches to classic pocket watches. If you know a man who likes things a bit more flash than some, consider going for a watch with a bit of bling to it. Gemstones and shiny accessories aren’t only for women, you know. A stand-out watch can be a great statement piece, especially when it doesn’t have to compete with several other pieces of flashy jewelry. Try a diamond watch from Citizen or another designer brand.

A Pair of Flash Earrings

It’s more common than you might think for men to wear earrings, and even for them to have both ears pierced. While a lot of men only go for one, having both ears pierced means they can double up on the bling. Just like women’s earrings, there’s a huge range of different styles, shapes, and sizes. But if you’re looking for something that’s sure to catch people’s eyes, you can get earrings for men here. You can’t miss a pair of sparkling diamond earrings, especially when there are some flashes of color in them. And they work well with either sharp suit or a more casual look.

Chain Necklaces

Choosing the right necklace for a guy can be hard. You need to get the right style, especially for a man who might not wear necklaces often. Simple chain necklaces can be a popular choice because, even though they don’t seem like much, they come in lots of different styles. You can choose something thin and understated or a chunkier, more attention-grabbing necklace. They can be expensive, solid gold pieces or you can find something more affordable if you’re on a budget. Whether a man is suave or a bit more flash, there’s sure to be a chain necklace for him.

A Pair of Suspenders

Suspenders are a flexible accessory that you can wear casually or formally. Hipster to some and hip-hop to others, they’ve been around for a long time. A man might not need them to hold up his pants (not if they fit properly) but they can make an outfit look pretty sharp. They can be worn with a polo shirt for a more preppy look or with a dress shirt and suit. They can also be used for a super casual look with a pair of jeans – maybe for some country chic! The right pair of suspenders can be a stand-out signature accessory.

Something Colorful

Some men who like to play it cool keep to neutral and safe colors. But for some fashion-forward gentlemen, there’s no point dressing well if you’re not going to try out something riskier. If you know someone who’s happy to experiment with different colors, you should look for something with a strong shade to gift them with. It could be anything from a hat to a shirt. Take a look at a range of colors and think about what you think they could pull off. It could be an electric green or hot pink, or it might be a deep red or sunshine yellow. Consider his personality as well as his style.

A Cool Cardigan

You might think that it takes a certain type of man to pull off a cardigan. But, in fact, there’s a cardigan out there for every man. They just need to find the right one – preferably one that doesn’t make them look like a granddad. There are many different styles, so finding the right one could be easy or hard, depending on if you know what you’re doing. Some guys look good in a thin, simple button-down cardigan. Others can rock a chunky knit cardigan and a pair of hip glasses frames. They can look good buttoned up or worn open as an alternative to a sweater.

The Right Pair of Shoes

If you decide you want to buy shoes for someone, you have to be very careful with your choice. Shoes not only need to look good, but they need to be comfortable too. If you know his size, that’s a good start, but some people like to try shoes on before they buy them. There are so many different types of shoes that you need to give some thought to what style could be right for a gift, or even if it’s a risk worth taking. There are formal or more casual styles to explore, including some big trends and brands you might want to take a look at.

A Pair of Shades

Wearing sunglasses in the wrong place at the wrong time can make a guy look like an idiot. But when the sun’s out, they’re the perfect accessory that’s both practical and stylish. They go with anything, from three-piece suits to baseball shorts and t-shirts. If you want to gift a guy a pair of shades, think about what he might wear them with. If you go with a pair that is fairly simple, they can be worn with almost anything. Consider the shape of his face to get the right style of shades. Aviators don’t look good on everyone.

A Bag

Ah, the controversial “man bag” or, as some might call it, “bag.” While some men might prefer to only carry what they can fit in their pockets, there’s nothing wrong with a man having a bag. Typically, men’s clothes have bigger pockets than women’s (which often have no pockets at all), so if all they need are their keys and wallet, they’re all set. But sometimes a dude wants to take his tablet, a book or his favorite cologne out with him. When he needs a bit more space, a stylish bag is useful, and it’s extremely easy to find one that doesn’t look like a handbag.

Car Accessories

It’s not just clothes that make the man. A lot of stylish guys care a lot about their car too, so something for their precious motorized baby can also be a good gift. If something to help them keep their car clean and shiny seems a bit boring, you could pick something else to jazz up their car. Retro fluffy dice might be a bit much, but you could consider some in-car gadgets and accessories.

Surprise a stylish guy you know with a great gift, and they’ll look sharper than ever.

A Simple Guide To Caring For An Aging Pet

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

When we first bring a new puppy or kitten home, we don’t like to think about the fact one day we will have to care for them as they age. The eternal tragedy of pet ownership is that we are always destined to outlive them.

Nevertheless, for all the years of joy, love, and companionship that they bring us, it seems a fair trade. Even as your beloved furry friend begins to slow down in the autumn of their life, they’re still going to be them, and you’re still going to be you – so you’re going to want to do the best you can for them. Caring for pets as they are can be as rewarding as bounding around with them when they’re younger; it brings you closer.

Obviously, as pets age, the chance of them experiencing a health problem becomes more likely. We’re talking generally about dogs and cats as a collective here, and both are faced with the same sort of problems. Mobility is limited over time, they can suffer from teeth problems, and general wear and tear on their bodies.

However, the first point we should examine is that of kidney failure in cats. Dogs can and do have problems with kidney function, but for cats, it’s almost a certain once they begin to reach the late years in terms of age.

While kidney failure might sound terrifying, it’s actually not. Cats can cope astonishingly well with low levels of kidney function, and there’s plenty you can do to support a good quality of life. Don’t take a diagnosis of kidney failure as a sign you should have your cat put to sleep. They can, and do, thrive after diagnosis – you just need to learn to manage it!

The same applies to mobility issues in dogs. As dogs age, their joints take a beating from all the running around parks they have been doing in their youth. As they slow down, many owners think that their dog has lost their quality of life. That’s not the case – it’s just a slightly different life than what they had before.

Focusing on these two problems – as they are by far the most common – what can you do about them?

Feline Kidney Failure
pexels-photo-110142

  • Talk to your vet about subcutaneous fluids, which can make a huge difference to how the cat feels.
  • Use a phosphorus binder in their food.
  • Be prepared for the fact they will urinate more often, and not necessarily in the litter tray. They can’t help this; it’s not bad behavior, so try and adjust to it. It might mean you need to bring in the likes of Arevalo Bros Chem-Dry every so often to help rid your home of any lingering smells on carpets, but it’s a small price to pay for your cat’s continued comfort.
  • Raise their food bowl in your home. This is more comfortable for them to eat from. It may be inconvenient and require some household rearranging, but again, small price to pay.

Loss Of Mobility In Dogs

pexels-photo-132665

  • Look into supplementing joint-friendly treatments which can give an extra lease of life. Your vet will likely have a list of recommendations.
  • Consider a doggy stroller. They may look silly, but your dog can still get all the benefits of being outside without any concerns about being uncomfortable.
  • If your dog likes to sleep on your bed or sit on the sofa, they might need a step to help them over the height.

Investment Option to Help Boost your Savings Pot

Calculating savings

© pogonici
A savings pot is just that unless you turn it into a growing one that yields high returns after some time. Saving and investment are different but related concepts in personal finance that you should use concurrently. Let’s explore options on how investing can really help boost your savings pot.

Open a Regular Savings Account

These accounts pay as much as six percent interest on saved amounts per annum. So, instead of keeping your savings in cash form or in accounts that do not earn interest, opt for savings accounts because your money will not be the same a year from the date you deposit it. One desirable aspect is that you do not have to make a lump sum deposit to earn considerably from this account type since periodic deposits that are made monthly can also make a big difference. Ensure to check the terms that come with whatever savings account you pick because you could be penalized for making withdrawals or failing to make deposits.

Online Trading

Due to the introduction of this amazing trading option, it is easy to boost your savings pot without being physically present to transact. The reason is that an online broker such as CMC markets will handle your trading instructions while you carry on with other daily undertakings. If you have a savings goal in place, it is possible to meet it in a short period if you invest in online trading because the entry requirements are minimal. Besides, you can top up your trading amounts every month from your earnings or other savings. Your savings pot will grow in ways like dividends, capital growth and speculation.

Fixed Interest Accounts

These account types pay interest on deposits just like regular savings accounts, only higher. In most cases, interest rates are double digit, which is commendable because you will reap greatly at the end of the agreed term. Some of the merits that make fixed interest securities appropriate in growing your savings pot include:

  • The savings habit is encouraged because you can keep your cash in an account for a particular period without making withdrawals
  • The returns are guaranteed
  • The amounts in your account can be used as security to borrow funds in case you encounter an emergency situation
  • In some instances, you can make premature withdrawals, which offers flexibility in case you wish to opt out of the savings plan.

Fixed Interest Securities

The amounts in your savings pot can grow to considerable extents if you invest them in these instruments. Common examples include preference shares, bonds, gilt-edged bonds and debentures. When you buy such securities in a specific firm, you become their lender, which is a position that entitles you to receive interest payments as per the agreement in place. Unlike equities like shares, these instruments carry less risk, meaning that the chances of losing your investment are close to nil. The only aspect that threatens their returns is interest-rate risk since their earnings are fixed over the term of the instruments and could be less valuable as such rates increase.

Unit Trusts

Placing your funds in a unit trust is also desirable since this is a fund that is made up of investors’ cash that is invested in a multitude of financial assets. In short, your savings amounts are pooled with that of thousands or millions of other investors’ cash to create a fund that is overseen by a fund manager. Top among the benefits of these vehicles include:

  • Fund managers are experienced and trained professionals with the resources and skills needed to make investment decisions
  • Your money is invested in numerous asset classes and types, which reduces the risks of losing it
  • You get to invest in lucrative markets that you may not have in the past due to financial constraints
  • It is possible to make monthly investments into the fund that involve tiny, affordable amounts

Money Market Funds

These are short-type investment vehicles that are perfect for enhancing the value of your savings pot. They are investments that are created for the purpose of earning interest income for shareholders in periods that are usually less than one year. It is possible to purchase shares in such funds via banks, mutual funds and brokerage firms. In addition to low risks, money market funds also offer high liquidity and you will not be charged for entering or exiting.

(Not So) Subtle Ways To Improve Your Home

If you’re a homeowner, you know that the work is never really finished on your quest to getting the perfect home. Most of these details are small, however, and don’t take up too much time or effort. However, every now and again we need to think about the big things, the things that can really change the feel of a room. The good news is that these big tasks can really improve your home – and its value – so get to work!

light-christmas-lighting-decoration-38624Source: Pexels.com

Boosting the Light

The lighting in a room dictates the entire mood, and there’s no getting around it. It’s not always a priority for people, however, and sometimes it’s one of those things that gets pushed to the back of the mind, even when it’s so important! Different seasons require different lighting, too, so it’s good to have two plans in place. In summer, you should be aiming to make the most of natural light. In winter, your rooms should be warm and cosy. It can be difficult to change lighting, especially if new wires are needed, but it’s a worthwhile project.

Having the Right Windows

Most people don’t tend to notice the windows of a room, but they do play a big role in dictating the atmosphere. If your windows are old then it’ll show, and you’ll almost certainly be losing more heat than you’d like to be losing. The best window brands also keep one eye on the aesthetic qualities of their windows, which means you can boost your energy efficiency and subtly improve the look of a room at the same time. Also, don’t underestimate how much more light having high quality windows can let in!

Reviewing the Floors

When it comes to the big DIY tasks, we tend to look at wallpaper and paint more than we do the floor, but flooring has a massive impact on the look and feel of a room. Flooring also comes and goes in style, too, so it’s worth reviewing your flooring to see if it’s still in vogue. It might be that underneath your tattered old carpet you have beautiful original flooring, so gift it a lift and see what’s there.

Making the Most of Modern Technology

Technology in the home used to be about boosting entertainment, but it’s becoming much more integrated into the function of our home. You can install an energy monitoring unit and see how much energy you’re using and also control your central heating even when you’re not in your home. Also, don’t underestimate how much more convenient (and efficient) it is to have an instant hot water tap installed in your kitchen.

Entering the Home

Finally, don’t just think about the inside of your home. Think about your entryway. A front door does more to establish the mood and tone or a home than you might initially realise. Go for a cute red wooden door and you’ll be establishing the style of your home from the very first possible moment. And on a much smaller scale, take a look at your doormat!

Pulling Your Hair Out About The School Holidays? These Ideas Will Save Your Sanity!

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

If you are a parent of school age kids, then you are probably pulling your hair out about the upcoming school holidays. Sure, you like having the kids off and being able to spend time together, but you don’t like the stress that comes with it.

The fact is that kids get bored easily, which means if you aren’t able to do different things with them every day, life can be somewhat stressful. Think moaning, arguments, and general bad behavior, and all because they are bored of being stuck at home.

To save your sanity and make the school holidays more enjoyable for everyone, here’s what you can do:

Encourage your older kids to get summer jobs

One way to keep the kids entertained this summer is to encourage them to get summer jobs. If they are old enough to work legally, then it could be worth finding out if there are any suitable jobs going in your area. Whether it’s waiting tables, taking care of younger kids, or working at the local mall, it doesn’t matter, just as long as you find them something that will keep them occupied while allowing them to earn some money of their own.

Sign them up for summer camp

1280px-BCCYMCA_WaterfrontPhoto source

Another option for keeping the kids busy this summer could be to sign them up for summer camp. That doesn’t have to be a long-term summer camp, you could look out for ones run at church retreat centers that last a few days to a week, or perhaps you could even look for day camps? Summer camps are a lot of fun for kids as they allow them to try new things, make new friends, and ultimately, keep them occupied.

Transform your garden into a play center

For those days when the kids are stuck at home, transform your backyard into a play center. If they don’t already have a climbing frame, swing, and slide, invest in pieces of play equipment for them. Find little ways to make the backyard more fun for your little ones, such as by getting them a giant trampoline to bounce on. If your garden is a fun space, you won’t need to worry as much about doing things every day with your little ones, as they should be able to keep themselves entertained playing outside.

Find them a new hobby to focus on

Guitar_practicePicture link

If your child doesn’t already have a hobby that they are passionate about, now could be the perfect time to find them something to focus on. Think about where their passions lay, and find them a new hobby that relates to them. Do they love music? If so, learning a musical instrument could be the answer. Is your child crazy about cooking? If the answer is yes, a new cookbook could be a good move. Does your child love sports? Then perhaps signing them up to a new sports club could keep them busy. Think about your child’s interests and find them a new hobby that matches them.

There you have it, some sanity saving ideas for the upcoming school holidays.

Keep Your Home In Tip Top Health

We all know how to keep ourselves healthy – take regular exercise, eat right and get enough sleep.  But what about your home? Are you undoing all your hard work by living in an unhealthy environment? Check out these everyday things that could help you live a healthier and happier life.

fakefeatherdusterCourtesy of Maid To Shine Cleaners
Keep your house dust free
Nobody wants to spend their lives dusting but dust can be a real problem in the home if left unchecked.  It can cause problems with skin and breathing allergies in children as well as clog up the systems we use in our house to keep it cool and comfortable. Dust particles could also hide more nasty air pollutants so keep your air fresh and bust the dust.

Avoid clutter
If you live in a busy household you might find clutter builds up quickly. Toys and shoes are the biggest culprits and whilst on their own they seem innocuous when left on stairs and steps they can be a real trip hazard, which could lead to a nasty fall and time in A&E.  Get into the habit of clearing stuff away as you use it – encourage the children to do the same – and you will avoid unnecessary bumps and sprains.

Keep Medication and chemicals out of reach
Medicines and chemicals are part of our everyday life and most of them are harmless in small quantities. But in the wrong hands they could be lethal. Ensure you keep medicines and household chemicals such as cleaning fluids in a secure cupboard well out of the reach of children.

Be vigilant for hidden problems

Your home might be harboring hidden problems like mould, dry rot or even termites and you might not know you have a problem until it’s too late and costly structural damage has occurred. If you spot any signs of water damage, a moldy residue and smell or wood that seems out of shape and discoloured you could have any of these hidden problems and it’s time to call in the professionals. For mold and dry rot you should contact your insurance company immediately as this can be expensive. If you suspect termites you can contact a specialist such as Terminix to help keep your home safe and structurally sound.

Be alarmed

Alarms protect your family and that’s a fact. You can get alarms that detect fire, gas, carbon dioxide and many other household threats. You can often install the alarms yourself and they are relatively cheap to purchase.  Alarms should be regularly checked and maintained for peace of mind. They can even save you money on your home insurance!

Maintain a healthy approach
As with personal health it is not enough to remember these things once.  All of these require regular maintenance to be effective. Maintenance is also important in your home and there are some repair problems you should never ignore. Maintain a healthy approach and you and your family can enjoy your home and good health.

6 Safety Hazards to Fix in Your Home Now

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Your home is supposed to be a sanctuary where you can look forward to coming back to after work each day and relaxing. Most homes in the country have a variety of safety hazards that homeowners don’t necessarily address. Ignoring potential dangers in your home could lead to serious accidents, injuries, or even death. Here are six common safety hazards that may need to be fixed in your home right now.

1. Smoke Detectors

There were more than 3,000 people killed in fires in the United States in 2014. You can prevent a tragic disaster like a fire by making sure your home has working smoke detectors. During Daylight Savings Time, check the batteries to make sure each device is functional. Additionally, it’s smart to keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen. Make sure everyone in the household knows to never leave candles unattended.

2. Chemicals and Medicine

The chemicals inside of your home also have potential to cause problems. Accidental poisoning by ingesting household chemicals is a serious problem in many homes. Prescription drug abuse or overdoses can also happen if medicine is left out for easy access by children or teenagers. The best thing to do is to keep all chemicals and medication secure and locked up.

3. Trip Hazards

You may not realize it, but hazards that lead to falls are some of the deadliest safety issues in many homes today. Seniors, especially, are at risk of suffering severe injuries when they fall. To keep your home safe and the people you love protected, make sure items are kept off the floor or put away after being used. Have sturdy railings and supports throughout your home if someone older lives there.

4. Carbon Monoxide Leaks

One of the deadliest hazards in households is the threat of a carbon monoxide leak. This odorless, colorless gas can kill if something inside of the home is malfunctioning. In most cases, a carbon monoxide leak occurs when the furnace is not properly combusting and spreads the poisonous gas throughout the home through the venting system. Carbon monoxide detectors are the best defense against this hazard to ensure the safety of your home. Expert contractors, like Southern Air Heating & Cooling, recommend a seasonal check of your furnace each year.

5. Swimming Pools

A pool can be a refreshing oasis on the hottest days of the year. Owning a pool is a big responsibility to ensure residents and visitors use it safely. Most places require homeowners to install a gated fence around the pool to lessen the chance of someone wandering in by accident and falling into the pool. It’s also vital to create rules at home to never swim alone.

6. Hot Surfaces

The final risk to think about inside of your home is getting burned. The most common burn hazard inside of your home comes from your stove. You may be able to keep you and your kids from getting burned if you pay careful attention when cooking and use the back burners when your kids are around.

Your home can continue to be a safe haven if you make sure hazards are removed. That way, all of the people you love most won’t be put at risk.
