Next to the kitchen, the bedroom is a key point in any home. It’s the last thing you see at night and the first thing you see in the morning. Of course, it’s important to get it perfect! If your bedroom is a mess, then your mind will be as well. So what can you do to make sure your room is a place of tranquil happiness? The trick is to ensure that you’ve filled it with the right things!

BED

The bed is the most important aspect of any bedroom. It’s the first thing anybody is going to see when they enter your special room. That’s why it’s so important to get this part right. Not only that, but this is where you’re going to be sleeping. Getting the right bed and comfortable mattress will make a huge difference to your life. Nobody is at their best when they haven’t been sleeping soundly, after all. So what types of thing should you look for? In all honesty, that’s completely up to you. Do you want an iron frame bed or just a standard bed to which you can attach your headboard? Do you want a memory foam mattress or something a little softer? Shopping around will help you work out what you’re after!

WARDROBE

Unless you’re lucky enough to have a separate room dedicated to clothes, it’s likely your clothes will be joining you in the bedroom. Keeping them neat and tidy will make your life so much easier in the long run. Who wants to rummage through piles of clothes every morning? Buying a wardrobe with clear sections, or a rail on which to hang your clothes is going to make your life a lot easier.

WINDOW DRESSING

Another crucial fact to consider is whether you want blinds or curtains to cover your windows. This is going to be essential in helping you get the most from your beauty sleep. After all, a choice that let’s all the light in isn’t going to be any good. Blinds are often a good option in the bedroom because they can black a room out completely. After you’ve decided that, though, it can be hard to know where to go. An excellent option is Made Blinds, who offer a clear guide of what each option can offer you.

BEDSIDE TABLES

Bedside tables are always a plus in the bedroom. It’s surprising the amount of things you’ll end up piling on the floor if you don’t have a table to use instead. Whether it’s your phone you’ll be leaving on there, or your nighttime reading, a bedside table is a must. This is also a fantastic place to keep a lamp. After all, you don’t want to go through endless arguments about whose turn it is to switch the light off. It’s best to choose these after you buy your wardrobe and bed. That way, you can ensure you find a design or type of wood that matches all three things nicely.

Do You Need More Sleep? It May Be Time To Switch Up Your Sleeping Environment

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Do you feel tired during the day? Are you waking up frequently during the night? If so, it may be time to switch up your sleeping environment. If you suffer from insomnia, or you crave more sleep, there are often simple changes you make.

travel-1677347_640Image credit

Dealing with noise

Is it rare for you to go a night without hearing the neighbors? Do you live close to a bar? Are you woken up by people talking or music playing? If so, there are ways of blocking out noise. If you own a house, it may be worth considering adding double glazing or sound proofing. If you’re just renting or you don’t want to spend a lot of money, you could wear earplugs. If your neighbors are making noise at antisocial hours, pop round and ask them politely if they could be quieter. You could also send a note. If there is still no improvement or the noise is extremely loud, seek advice from the police.

Buying a new mattress

Do you find it hard to get comfortable when you get into bed? Have you got springs sticking in your back or is your mattress sunken in the middle? If you haven’t bought a new bed in years, it may be time to invest in a new mattress. When you sleep, it’s important that your bed provides comfort as well as support for your spine. If your mattress isn’t fit for purpose, you may find that you develop back pain. Take a trip to a local bed store, and get some ideas of mattress types and prices. Try sitting and lying on a few different styles to see which you prefer. If you find a brand or model that you like, note down the name or code. You can then compare prices online. You may also find it beneficial to read reviews online before you buy. You can find information here at bestmattress-reviews.org/what-shoppers-say-serta-icomfort-reviews, for example.

Making your bedroom more relaxing

If your bedroom is messy, or you have clashing colors on the walls or strip lights, you may find it hard to relax and unwind. Ideally, you want to create a room that is soothing and calming. When you’ve had a long day at work, your bedroom should be a tranquil haven. Go for pastel shades on the walls, and create a cozy feel by laying throws on the bed and adding cushions. Light candles or fit a dimmer switch. Tidy up, and use storage solutions to prevent clutter from accumulating. Hang heavy curtains or blackout blinds to make sure your room is dark. Try and make your bedroom a tech-free zone. If you’re texting, watching TV or checking emails, you’ll find it hard to switch off. For design ideas, check out https://uk.pinterest.com/explore/tranquil-bedroom/.

Are you always tired? Do you think about sleep constantly during the day? If you’re struggling to snooze at night, your sleeping environment may be to blame. Try and identify problems and find solutions. There are ways to deal with light and noise, for example. If you can’t get comfy, consider changing your mattress. You could also take steps to make your bedroom more peaceful.

ghostbusters-answer-the-call-extended-editionI didn’t get a chance to see GHOSTBUSTERS: ANSWER THE CALL EXTENDED EDITION when it was in theaters so I’m excited that it is now on Blu-ray and DVD. My girls and I can’t wait to watch it with our friends this weekend. It stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Chris Hemsworth (drool!). Even more exciting, the extended edition has more than 15 minutes not seen in theaters plus more than four hours of bonus features, including deleted scenes and gag reels. It’s the perfect movie for Halloween time which is one of my favorite times of the year.

been-boodHalloween is a time for everyone to feel like a kid again. Now that I have my own children I love that I can to share in their excitement as we decorate our house, buy candy, and plan their Halloween costumes. Another fun tradition is to “Boo” one of our friends by surprising them with a bucket full of goodies on their doorstep.

20161012_201842

I teamed up with Walmart to surprise one of my daughters’ friends with a special BOO bucket filled with goodies. My girls picked their friend’s favorite treats and left the bucket in front of her door for her to find when she came home from school. She was so surprised and had no idea who gave it to her.  Giving to others without getting anything in return was a great lesson for my girls. I found out from my daughters’ friend that she plans to Boo It Forward to a little boy in our neighborhood who has autism. I’m so proud of my girls for starting the Boo It Forward chain in our neighborhood. Want to start one in yours? Check out Walmart.com/BooItForward to learn more and get free printables to help you #BooItForward. While you’re there order yourself a copy of Ghostbusters: Answer The Call Extended Edition, too. What is your favorite Halloween tradition?

Make sure to share photos of your BOO’ing experience using the hashtags #BooItForward and #Ghostbusters and help spread the word!

Parents Reaching 70 – What You Can Do To Help Them Live Happily For Longer

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

As we get older, so do our parents. And when they reach a certain age, you can become more concerned about their well-being. Parenting our parents isn’t something that any of us want to do. But it can be difficult to find the right balance when we’re trying to help them. After all, their memories of raising us are still fresh in their mind, even though we’re raising our own kids now. How can we make sure our parents stay happy as they enter their later years?

Ailing health can be a problem that starts in the late sixties and early seventies. But it could be the signs of aging that worry you the most. The body will wear out so it’s likely that some changes need to be made to maintain a good quality of life. Vision and hearing commonly degenerate in our later years. It can affect so many important parts of our lives. It could be a good idea to have annual checks to ensure everything is OK here.

When the acuity of hearing begins to diminish, life can feel muted. And it can be really embarrassing asking people to repeat themselves over and again. You can find things like Hearing Aid Buyer Today’s buying guide useful for figuring out what kind of device might enhance your parent’s hearing. If you find they are dropping out of conversations or simply not engaged with the family as much, it’s worth having the hearing tested.

As the acuity of vision diminishes, everyday tasks can become a problem. It’s not just about being able to read the labels on food in the grocery store. Driving also requires good vision so that hazards and road signs can be identified. Reading glasses are only helpful for so long. Regular eye check-ups will ensure there are no major problems. An accurate prescription for glasses can help enhance the vision so your parent can enjoy their regular hobbies again. It can also help them maintain their independence for longer.

27004275306_289727225a_zThanks to Flickr for the pic

Physically, your parents are probably doing quite well. We are all fitter, stronger, and healthier than we were decades ago. But to maintain a healthy physique, it’s important to keep exercising the body every day. Walking is one of the best ways for people to stay well. Stretches are also important to maintain flexibility and muscle strength. A lack of core strength and posture can lead to a risk of falling. This can result in serious injury for poor Mom or Dad.

If your parents have stopped working now, think about how they are spending their spare time. We all need plenty of enriching activities in our lives. Some of those hobbies and interests may be physical in nature, like dancing or swimming. Others may be mentally stimulating like music and reading. A good variety of things is best. And any that boost a person’s social life is ideal. Humans need the company of others. It helps support good mental health.

2560935556_d6a5d1cafb_zThanks to Flickr for the pic

There are plenty of ways you can support your parents without appearing too pushy. If they seem quite content and happy, then there is little you need to do for now. But keeping an eye on things you’re worried about is the right thing to do. Of course, they are grown-ups and can take care of themselves, right? This is a valid point. But if they were worried about you, they would be doing all they can to make sure you’re OK. If you’re met with resistance, just back off for a while. Chances are they will appreciate your concern later.

They say the 70s are the new 50s. Many people in this age group are enjoying active lives with plenty of friends and family around them. And it is thought that people in this age group tend to be better off financially than their parents were. This means there is more income to spend on enriching their lives, maintaining their homes, and taking care of their health needs. Does this mean there is no need for us as children to be concerned?

Aging happens. When the signs of aging start to affect our lives will be different for everyone. The most common ailments like coughs and colds can take longer to get over later in life. Injuries will also take longer to heal, and some may not heal fully, depending on their health. Does this mean we should be wrapping our parents up in cotton wool? It can be tempting to want to protect them as they become older and a little more frail. Having a conversation with them about this may be awkward, but it will help everyone know how they’re feeling.

Now your own children are becoming a little more independent, why not spend more time with your parents? You could enjoy healthy meals together and even enjoy some activities together. There are plenty of different things you could all enjoy as an extended family. You’ll each have your own preferred hobbies that you could introduce to each other. Staying connected is important, and it gives you a chance to notice if there are any problems. Best of all, it gives your parents a chance to spend time with everyone.

It’s true that aging can bring more serious illnesses. Heart and lung problems may present themselves. Sadly there are many cancers that are more likely to occur as we age. Diabetes can be particularly troublesome for someone later in life. But it is dementia that is affecting families the most. This cruel illness can cause serious memory problems and a loss of independence. We are all forgetful at the best of times. As we get older, this can become more common.

But if your parent is often confused as well, it might be a sign that there is a problem. A good doctor will be able to test and diagnose dementia. You will then need to consider how best to make sure your parent is safe and well for the rest of their lives. More and more people enjoy having their parents live with them. This could enrich your life too. Take care.

It seems like we’ve only just started 2016, but somehow we’re edging closer and closer to the end of the year. Summer is over, autumn is passing fast and winter is on the cards. You should use the time you have left of autumn to prepare for the icy months to come. Make the most of the temperate weather conditions and repair these household items before you end up freezing your fingers as you attempt to fix them mid-December.

4728960_de93657fPicture Credit

Heating

Make sure that whatever source of heating you use is in full working condition. If your boiler is on the blink, get it fixed. If your chimney needs a good sweep out, hire a professional chimney sweep to do a good job for you. If you have a wood burner, make sure that you’re all stocked up with logs to burn. If you have a pellet stove, make sure all is in good order. If not, fix it. Englander pellet stove parts are easy to come by and will have your old stove back in full working order in no time.

broken-409496_960_720Image Source

Windows

Maybe a small window was put through when one of the kids was playing in the garden. You can turn a blind eye to it now, but when the temperature drops, you’ll know about it. Drafts are bad enough, never mind an extra easy route for the wind to make an entrance into your home. Have any chips, cracks or holes repaired. If you only have single glazing, consider double glazing. This will keep your home warmer and save you money on bills.

winter-1209348_960_720Image Credit

Your Car

Give your car a full checkup. Make sure all of your oils are topped up and the parts are good to go. Always carry extra oil, windscreen wash and a spare tyre in the boot. This will mean you have less time to wait if you need to call out recovery when you have a breakdown. Make sure your car’s heating and any seat warmers are also in good working condition.

Accessories

Besides all of these repairs, there are plenty of accessories out there to help you keep warm and cosy in your home during the winter months. Here are a few to consider.

Draft Excluders

Draft excluders line the bottom of the doors in your home and, unsurprisingly, stop drafts from reaching you. They come in all sorts of cute designs, so have a look around before purchasing.

Heavy Curtains

Heavy curtains will help to stop heat from escaping through your windows. They will help to insulate your home.

Underfloor Heating

Does this count as an accessory? Underfloor heating is a fairly big purchase but it will keep your feet warm as you make your way downstairs to the kitchen to make a fresh, hot cup of coffee in the mornings.

Jumpers, Socks and Thick Leggings

Sometimes it’s not just about keeping your home warm. It’s about keeping the people in it warm. Layer up. We’re not saying turn all of your heating off and sit in a cold room in full outdoor wear. But be reasonable. Don’t run around your house in swimwear and then wonder why you’re cold. Besides, winter clothes are comfortable. Snuggle up in your favourite jumper, under a cosy little blanket. You’ll be warm in no time.

A Dog Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas

We are all well versed in the saying ‘A Dog Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas.’ But sadly there are people out there who buy a puppy thinking he is cute, and then find they are not able to cope. Or enjoying a puppy when he is small and not realizing the costs of owning a pet, or not wanting an older dog. These are, of course, not true animal lovers. We would like to think if you are buying a puppy for Christmas it is because you have put considerable thought into the process. It may be that your children love animals and really want to look after a dog. Or perhaps you feel like a happy, loving pet will complete your family. Training a puppy and owning a dog is a huge responsibility. So today we’re going to look at what it takes to own a dog.

Can You Afford To Have A Dog?

Many people get overwhelmed by the cuteness of puppies. But the truth is, can you afford to own a dog? There are vaccinations, pet health insurance, medication, toys and food to all consider when buying a puppy. If you can, super! If you can’t commit to the cost for the next 12-15 years, then please don’t be silly enough to buy a puppy.

dog-734689_640Image source: Pixaby

Do You Have The Time To Take Care Of A Puppy

Puppies are super cute, but they are also incredibly mischievous! They require a lot of time and training. You are completely responsible for this new little bundle of joy, and you will have to invest hours into his training. Also, as he grows older, he won’t want to be left alone for long periods of time. Dogs are social creatures. You should never own a dog if you are out all day, every day at work. You also have to remember you will need to exercise your dog the time to take him on at least a couple of long walks a day. Think about whether you have enough free time to devote to a dog. Otherwise, it’s just not fair on them.

Are You Allergic?

Before you jump in ahead and choose the cutest puppy on the block as your pet, make sure you are not allergic to dogs! Unless you have been around a lot of pets, you may not know if you are allergic or not. Spend some time with the breed of dog you are looking to buy, and make sure you don’t start getting any symptoms. There are also tests that can be done by a medical professional to see what animals you are allergic too. If you are allergic but still desperately crave a puppy, fret not! There are some breeds, such as Poodles and Shih-Tzus that are less likely to cause allergies. But again, you must check yourself out before buying a puppy.

Decision Made?

If after all these questions, you have decided you are responsible enough and have enough time for a puppy, then there is no time like the present! Dogs bring so much joy and happiness into a home that they are worthy of becoming your new best friend!

The kitchen is often most affectionately known as the hub of the home. The place where families gather after a hard day’s graft. Children doing homework, parents preparing and making food. It’s a room in your home that is possibly used the most. So you can imagine that many people strive to have a kitchen that suits their needs. With that in mind, I thought I would share with you some of the kitchen essentials you need to kit your kitchen out.

pair_of_wine_glassesSourced image

The best dinner and glassware

The main purpose of a kitchen is to have a place to prepare your food and drink. So it’s of course an essential to ensure you have dinner and glassware that you might need. PLates and bowls for food, glasses for drinks. Even glassware that are specific for even juices or drinks like wine is an essential.

Seating and storage

It’s important to have somewhere to seat and places to store things in a kitchen. With it being one of the most used rooms in a home, it’s easy for it to become cluttered and messy. Ample storage for things like paperwork and food is a must. As it is a sociable environment, if you have the space you may want to consider some seating options. It could be bar stools to sit at a breakfast bar, or something more comfortable in a lounge area.

Plenty to eat and drink

Of course, no kitchen would be complete without an ample amount of food and drink sytored away. From a special cupboard for the biscuits that are just for adults, through to a special wine of your choice chilling in the fridge. For ideas on wine options and reviews check out websites like WithMyWine.

1145641258_1b7940337b_zSourced image

A hand blender

You don’t need too many fancy gadgets in your kitchen. Unless you are one of those people who always wants the latest trend. However, one gadget that is much more versatile than you think is the hand blender. These can often be picked up relatively cheaply from your local store. You’ll wonder how you coped without one once you get one in your kitchen.

cup-1194537_640Sourced image

Plenty of cups and mugs

The kitchen is a sociable environment. Just a soften as you might be wanting a nice glass of wine in there, you may also want to enjoy a hot coffee or cup of tea. Even more so with friends and family during the day. So it’s essential to ensure that you have plenty of mugs and cups in the kitchen to satisfy any number of guests.

A juicer

While it may not seem like an essential to some a juicer is a great thing to have in your kitchen. Juicing is a great way to increase your vegetable and fruit intake. Many people use juices in their cooking or just an addition to their morning routine. You may find that a juicer could transform your life.

I hope this has inspired you to kit out your kitchen. Have you got any of them already?

Marvel Studios to donate up to $1 million in recognition of new charitable initiative!
Benedict Cumberbatch, star of Marvel Studios’ upcoming film DOCTOR STRANGE, announced the launch of Marvel Studios: Hero Acts, a new charitable initiative focused on bringing help and hope to kids around the world.
Learn how you can help:

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (October 5, 2016) – Today in a special video message, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, star of Marvel Studios’ upcoming film “Doctor Strange,” announced the launch of Marvel Studios: Hero Acts, a new charitable initiative focused on bringing help and hope to kids around the world.

Marvel Studios launched the first Hero Acts campaign, and from now until the end of the year, Marvel Studios will donate five dollars ($5) to Save the Children, up to U.S. one million dollars, for every fan who uploads a photo of themselves in their favorite Marvel hero pose. Marvel Studios is collaborating with Fotition, a new social change platform, to power the experience on a brand-new website MarvelStudiosHeroActs.com. Fans will be able to visit the site to upload their photo and choose from a selection of custom Marvel-themed overlays. They will then be able to post their photo directly to the Hero Acts gallery and to their other social channels using the hashtags #marvelstudios #heroacts.

“After the experience of filming portions of ‘Doctor Strange’ in Nepal, our team was inspired to give back to the kids there and wanted to establish a larger ongoing program in support of children facing extraordinary circumstances,” said Kevin Feige, Producer & President, Marvel Studios. “For our first Marvel Studios: Hero Acts effort, we’re thrilled to team up with Save the Children, an organization with decades of experience improving the lives of children around the world.”

With fan participation, the donations made through Hero Acts can help Save the Children provide much-needed learning materials for as many as 123,000 kids in Nepal, Haiti, and the United States. Together, Marvel Studios and its fans can help put these children on a path where they can learn, thrive, and strive toward a better future.

“Save the Children is extremely grateful to be the first nonprofit organization to be part of Marvel Studios: Hero Acts,” said Carolyn Miles, President & CEO of Save the Children. “Even though more children are enrolled in primary school worldwide than ever before, many are struggling to learn and to get a quality education. That is why this collaboration is so valuable. The funds raised through Hero Acts will provide much-needed learning materials in communities where there are few resources, and will boost children’s basic skills to help them succeed in school and in life. The actions taken by Marvel fans will make a meaningful difference for children.”

Whether visiting children in hospitals, granting wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses, or inspiring kids and families through our content, Marvel Studios: Hero Acts builds on the tradition of lending a hand to children in times of need. From our filmmakers to our fans, we believe we each have our own superpower to lend to the world, and Marvel Studios is dedicated to bringing that out in everyone.
