Why You Absolutely Need to Create a Will

Creating a will is caring for your family when you’re gone, sounds a bit morbid sure, but it’s the reality.

Do I really need a will? What’s in it for me?

A will is a legal document that specifies who will inherit what you’ll leave earth when you pass away: real estate, bank accounts, cars, jewelry and other property.

You have the choice to leave everything to one person or divide it up in small, detailed shares, such as the case with land or possessions. However, a will is much more than just a means of distributing your property after you’re gone, especially if you have kids who might challenge a will that they don’t think is fair.

What if I die without a will?

Chaos ensues. Without a legal will, there’s no guarantee that after you’re gone, the money you left will go to the people you want to receive your assets. This might sound stiff, but dying without a valid will gives the law power to divide it according to a fairly inflexible formula. Your spouse would only receive about one-third or one-half of your state while the rest would be given to your children.

This may sound good, but without a will, some States will appoint an administrator who charges fees for the service to manage your children’s money until they reach the age of 18. This means that your spouse won’t be able to access the money left to help you raise your children without challenging a will to help her win the legal procedure. And even after the courts decide that your spouse could control the funds reserved for your children in trust, he or she would have to routinely show an accounting of how the money is used every year.

Can I make a will myself or do I need a lawyer?

The former. However, you’ll need to devote time, energy and even a little money to do it right yourself. Many people have created legally valid wills through the help of books or will-writing software program, although mistakes may happen if you decided a DIY will creation.

If you’re wondering if anyone will go the lengths to challenge a will that they believe to be unfair, absolutely. Your spouse, children, or even relatives might go to the courts to challenge your original will.

This is why it’s important to ask help from lawyers when creating one. However, if you really want to do it on your own, here are some ways to get started:

  1. Create a list of all your assets, this includes bank accounts, real estate, life insurance, investments, and personal property.
  2. Decide hard whom you want to inherit what, and when. For example, you may want your son to inherit his grandfather’s watch when he turns 21.
  3. Choose a guardian for your children.
  4. Choose an alternate guardian if the first choice is unable or unwilling to do it.
  5. Decide if you want someone to manage the assets you leave for your children.
  6. Choose an executor to carry out your desire and manage the required paperwork after you’re gone.
  7. You may also include a letter stating how you would like your children to be educated and raised, your funeral to be arranged, and so on.

To help keep pets safe this season, the ASPCA has created ID Your Pet Day on July 1st – a holiday to raise awareness about the importance of ID tagging your pet. This holiday is especially timely as July 4th is a time of year when many pets go missing due to fireworks. In hopes of spreading the word about this important day, they designed this infographic with tips below to keep your pets safe:

 7a9b4571-24ba-45e5-9169-8b730aa0afd1

·         A personalized ID tag is the best way to increase the likelihood your pet returning home. Make sure your pet is fitted with a collar and ID tag that includes your name and phone number.

·         Implanted microchips can serve as an important security measure to ensure that a pet is returned home in the case of a lost collar and ID tag.

·         Download the ASPCA Pet Safety App to access personalized instructions on how to search for a lost animal in a variety of circumstances: ASPCAapp.org.

Disney’s Adventure’s in Babysitting Interview and Review

Disclosure- I was invited by Disney to attend this all expense paid press trip but all opinions are 100% my own.

image002 (2)

A few months ago while I was in Los Angeles for the Captain America Event I had the opportunity to screen Disney’s 100th DCOM movie, Adventures in Babysitting which is an updated version of the 80’s movie with the same title.  This version gives a wink and a nod to the 80’s version with a few similarities but it has a different story and instead of one babysitter this version has 2 played by Sabrina Carpenter (Girl Meets World) and Sofia Carson (Descendants). I absolutely loved this newer version. I watched the older version to get ready for my trip because I didn’t really remember much from it. I guess I’m just a prude mom now because I didn’t remember things in the original version that made me cringe as a parent (a “dirty” magazine for instance) but I am happy to say that this newer version is perfect for all audiences and a great movie for families to watch and enjoy together.

About Adventures in Babysitting

“Adventures in Babysitting,” unfolds when Jenny Parker (Sabrina Carpenter) and Lola Perez (Sofia Carson), two teen girls with distinctly different personalities, each  interview for a coveted photography internship and accidentally swap phones.  When the Anderson family calls Jenny’s phone looking for a last-minute babysitter, audacious Lola, in need of some extra cash, picks up and nominates herself.  Meanwhile, dependable Jenny is already set to babysit the Cooper family for the evening. Unfortunately, Lola’s first attempt at babysitting takes an unforeseen turn when one of the Anderson kids sneaks out to go to a concert. Jenny, determined to protect her reputation, and Lola with the remaining kids in tow, head out and have the adventure of a lifetime during one magical night in the big city.

The Disney Channel Original Movie also stars Nikki Hahn as introverted teen Emily Cooper, Mallory James Mahoney as young fashionista Katy Cooper, Max Gecowets as the rebellious Trey Anderson, Jet Jurgensmeyer as chef wunderkind Bobby Anderson, Madison Horcher as roller derby fanatic Alison “AJ” Anderson and Kevin Quinn (Disney Channel’s “BUNK’D”) as Jenny’s crush Zac Chase.

“Adventures in Babysitting” is directed by John Schultz (“Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer,” “Like Mike”) and written by Tiffany Paulsen (“Nancy Drew”). The movie is executive-produced by Michelle Manning (“Teen Beach 2,” “The Breakfast Club”) and Chuck Minsky is the director of photography (“The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” “Mother’s Day”).

In a heartfelt story that celebrates individuality, friendship and self-empowerment, the live-action adventure comedy made for kids, tweens and families, pays homage to the 1980s classic with familiar references and iconic scenes.

Hollywood Records recording artists Carpenter and Carson perform the movie’s end credit song “Wild Side” produced by Jens Koerkemeier, Emanuel Kiriakou and Andrew Goldstein.

The “Adventures in Babysitting” premiere telecast is sponsored by Post Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles. It will be followed by the premiere of Disney Channel’s new comedy series “Bizaardvark.”

Adventures in Babysitting will air on The Disney Channel tomorrow, June 24th at 8 pm EDT so get your family together, pop some popcorn, and snuggle in for a movie that you can all enjoy together. Some of the hijinks in the movie remind me a little of movies like Home Alone with two “bad guys” (Ken Lawson and Michael P. Northey) chasing the babysitters and the children they are babysitting for.

Their night goes from bad to worse but along the way the two totally different babysitters find out they can learn from each other. My favorite scene is the one where they go into a club and have to rap so keep an eye out for that part.

We’re not quitters, we’re the babysitters!

After we screened the movie we had the chance to interview Sabrina Carpenter and Sofia Carson and they were both absolutely adorable. Both girls were poised, beautiful, and it was so much fun to see them interact with each other.

One Big Family-
You could totally tell how much they liked each other and how close they had become as friends on the set of the movie.

Sofia-“We all became a family. We had little parties every weekend- singing, dancing, improv games. We had the greatest time.”

It was obvious that the girls not only enjoyed working with each other but also with the 5 children that played the children they were babysitting in the movie.

Sabrina- “The five kids are some of the most talented we’ve ever met. They were so professional and such a joy to work with. I wish I could babysit them.”

What’s So Funny?
We asked the girls the funniest thing about each other and their response was hysterical:

Sabrina: That she’s not that funny.”

Sofia: That’s what I was gonna say! I’m not funny.”

Sabrina: “No, but that’s what makes her funny is that she knows that she’s not funny. But with a script, she’s so funny. If she had writers for her all the time, she’d be so funny.”

Sofia: I’d be hysterical! Good thing I’m an actress. And Sabrina’s probably the funniest person you will ever meet. She doesn’t need a script.”

Stunts in the movie-
There are a lot of stunts in the movie and while Sofia was old enough to do her own stunts but Sabrina is a minor so she was only able to pretend to drive. Sofia told us how she even got hurt doing one of the stunts when we mentioned how it seemed that she was limping a bit.

Sabrina– “I don’t drive. We have a lot of bloopers of me in the car because I can’t drive. There definitely will be bloopers on the DVD.”

Sofia- “Can I mention it was the lamest stunt of the whole movie that I hurt myself. We ran in the rain the whole movie. I was in a factory hanging 20 feet in the air. I did all of that. But when they asked me to run and walk, I fell. It is the first scene in the movie.  Lola is running late. It was actually the last week of shooting. They had just wet the pavement to make it look nice on camera and I wasn’t wearing shoes with rubber soles. I had to run down the hill pretty quickly, jump over lawn [bushes] and then the second I hit the pavement, I just wiped out. All you hear was a thump.  And you just see me disappear behind the car. But now I get to say I fell doing a stunt.”

Personal babysitting adventure stories-
Sofia:
“I babysat my little cousins, but they were such good kids. They’re angels. I have no funny stories! We got ice cream. I got chocolate. They got strawberry and they went to sleep. It was very easy. Nothing like what we experienced in this movie…there were no ferrets involved whatsoever.”

Sabrina: I’ve never babysat, but once I locked a babysitter out of the house because I didn’t really like her. Well, it was me and my two older sisters. She wasn’t a great babysitter, though. She brought over her boyfriend. We were like, we don’t know this person. He was really, really nice, but still.”

Are you a Jenny or a Lola?
Both girls are more in between a Jenny and a Lola.

Sofia- “I would say I’m kind of an in between.  Lola is this really cool free spirited young girl who isn’t afraid to just live life, despite the consequences of sometimes making irresponsible decisions.  But she’s really passionate about her art.  And a very strong girl.  And I’m also very passionate about… I think we both are, about what we do about our music and acting.  And we’re both also… I’m just gonna answer this for both of us…independent girls.  Both we have a really strong, incredible moms.  And they taught us to be, you know, strong girls, or represent girl power.  And Lola and Jenny are both like that.  ‘Cause Jenny would know she’s a little bit more inside the box.  She’s still a strong, powerful young girl. We both save the day together.”

Sabrina-   “What she said.”

Tell-Tale Signs It’s The Perfect Family Home!

This post may contain affiliate links.

When you decide to sell up, it can be a challenge picking the right property. You need to find a great neighborhood where your family can enjoy growing up. Here are some tell-tale signs it’s the perfect family home for you.

640px-Varassaari5 (1)Image Source

It’s close to the park

If there is a park close by, you know there is a good chance your kids will love living there. It’s always good to find a family home that has a park close by. If there isn’t one, it can often mean kids will play out on the street which is not good for safety reasons. Therefore, when you go to view a property, ask them where the local park is and find out if it’s within walking distance.

You feel it’s a safe area

Another way you can know it’s the perfect family home for you is if you feel safe when you arrive. Take a look around the neighborhood and see what’s going on. Normally your intuition is right, and you can tell if you will be happy there or not. You can also look online and find about the crime in the area, so you know how often break-ins occur. Ask the current owner about the safety measures that are currently in place in the household so you know if they have an alarm etc. If you feel like it’s a safe area, then this could be the perfect family home for you.

It’s close to schools

It’s always good to be able to be close enough to schools to walk when you are looking for the perfect family home. Therefore, when you are searching for homes for sale, check out the schools which are within the catchment area. You should be able to see which ones you can walk to so that it saves you having to drive the little ones to school. Also, you can check to see how good they are before you send your kids there.

It has the right amount of bedrooms

You need to check that it has the right amount of bedrooms to know if it’s the perfect family home for you. You should be going for a home which has one more extra bedroom than your family needs. That way, if you decide to have another baby in the future, you know there is space for the little one. It’s always good for when you have guests to stay that you have a spare room for them to sleep in. Bonus rooms are also good if you fancy having a study or a playroom for the kids.

You keep thinking about it

Another sign it’s the right home for you is if you keep thinking about it once you leave the home. If you have seen others since, but it’s still on your mind, there’s a good chance it’s the right home for you. Consider how you would feel if the realtor told you that it’s been sold. If you feel upset, it’s likely that it’s the right property. You should see it again to make up your mind whether you want to go ahead with the sale.

Once you have decided on the home, you can put yours on the market and get packing!
