Most parents would love their children to help out more around the house.  I know I would.  I realized a while ago that for my children to help me around the house, I needed to make it easier for them to be able to help me.  Here are 10 ways to help your children help around the house.

1. If you want your children to keep their shoes neat and tidy, you need to set up a neat and tidy place for shoes.  Different things work for different households.  We tried all sorts of buckets and racks but our shoes were still messy until I bought a shoe storage cubbie from Amazon.  It looks great near our front door, keeps the shoes contained without them looking messy, and my children now know exactly where their shoes are.  It took a little reminding in the beginning to break their old habits, but now putting their shoes in the storage cubbie is second nature to them.  Putting it near the entrance that your children enter most often is a great visual reminder.  We keep a bin with their socks in one of the cubbies so they don’t have to remember to bring socks downstairs with them in the morning.
plates
2. Keep kid friendly cups, plates, utensils, etc. in reach of children so they can grab them as needed and be able to help with putting them away, too.
cleaning
3. Keep a kid friendly bucket of cleaning supplies handy for your kids to grab and help you out.  Ours has some microfiber cloths (for dusting and wiping up dirt), a water spray bottle with a little vinegar (to spray surfaces and loosen dirt), some paper towel (for cleaning and drying messes), and a dustpan and brush set.
moen toilet paper holder
4. Want a better chance at getting your kids to actually refill the toilet paper holder?  Get one that is easy to use.  The type that requires pushing the ends into the base can be hard for little hands.  We have one like the Moen Toilet Paper Holder above that you can grab on Amazon.  It is open on the side so the roll easily slides on.
bin
5.  Tired of school work, important papers from school, mail, and more being lost?  Get a simple basket to designate as where all important papers go.  Have your kids empty their backpacks as soon as they get home from school and put all papers for you in the basket.  Now you’ll always know where they are.  I also put mail for my husband, mailed coupons I want to keep, etc. in ours and keep it right by the door so it is easy to stay organized.  I bought ours on clearance at Michael’s for a few dollars.  You can probably find a plastic one at any dollar store.
drawers
6. It is much easier for children to keep their rooms clean and organized if everything has a place.  If children don’t know where something goes, they aren’t going to put it away.  Make it easier for them by purchasing bins, plastic drawers, cabinets, or whatever works in your child’s room and have a designated place for everything.  One drawer for dolls, one drawer for figures, one drawer for art supplies, and so on.  For younger children label each bin with pictures of what goes inside to help them remember.  Remind them to only take one or two types of toys out at a time for easier clean up.  Make cleaning up a game.  My girls do a 5 minute pick up at my house.  I set a timer and they try to clean everything up in 5 minutes.  If kept up with, it shouldn’t take much more than 5 minutes for them to put things away.  Of course there are times when their rooms look like a hurricane came through and it takes them longer.  But having designated spots for items helps a lot.baskets
7.  Have your children help sort, fold, and put laundry away.  Try purchasing several inexpensive baskets.  Have your children put socks in one, underwear in one, and pajamas in one.  Everything else gets laid out and hung up or folded by older children.  Have your children pick a basket to be in charge of sorting, folding, and putting away.     Have children set aside the outfits they are going to wear to school everyday for the week as they are putting them away so they won’t have to worry each morning.  Make doing laundry a family event.  The work gets done much faster and it is much more fun doing it together.
cart
8. Keep plastic, kid-friendly knives around so your children can help you prepare dinner buy cutting up fruits, veggies, and more.  We don’t have a lot of counter space so we purchased a rolling breakfast cart with bar stools and a drop down side leaf that my girls sit at when they are helping me.  I stand on one side and they each have their own spot to sit at and help me with dinner.  They are much more adventurous with trying new foods if they helped prepare them.
f-529-adrs-rct-v7-11
9. Kids love playing with water so why not recruit them to help wash the dishes?  I purchased cute sponges at the dollar store that my children love using.  They are shaped like a frog, a ladybug, and other cute shapes that they like.  They like using their special sponges.  You could also cut regular sponges in fun shapes, too.  I make sure to remove anything sharp from the sink before I let them wash the dishes to keep their hands safe.  Our sink has a pull down sprayer but I would really love to have Pfister’s Elevate 1-Handle, Pull-Down Faucet pictured above.  It can be lowered for when my children use the sink and then raised with the touch of a button for when I need to fill a pot or fill a bucket.  A Mommy can dream!
I will be having a giveaway soon where the winner will get their choice of any Pfister faucet so keep an eye out!
garden-1024x50410. Teach children about nature, plants, and where food comes from by starting a family garden.  Purchase inexpensive gardening tools and have your children help plant their favorite fruits and vegetables.  Let them help you choose what to plant.  Encourage them to try new fruits and vegetables.  My girls don’t normally like tomatoes and peppers but since we’re growing them in our garden, they are excited to try them again.  Give each child a group of plants that they are responsible for watering and taking care of.  Purchase inexpensive watering cans for each child and let them decorate their own.

What things have you done at home to help your children help you?

An Interview With Jodi Benson, The Voice of Disney’s The Little Mermaid #LittleMermaidEvent

Disclosure: Disney paid for my flights, lodging, and expenses for this trip but all opinions are 100% my own.
The Little Mermaid CollageThe Little Mermaid Diamond Edition is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray on October 1st.  I had the privilege of meeting Jodi Benson who is the voice of Ariel (The Little Mermaid).  I’m not sure which is more beautiful, Jodi or her singing voice.  She is so down-to-earth and friendly.  We interviewed her in a small group and it felt like she was just one of us girls.  I could have talked to her all day.   In fact were were all still chatting with her as we were being ushered out the door after the interview.  She started talking about what it was like for her children growing up their mommy being Ariel and how when her son was younger he would get upset when she would sing for other people because she was HIS MOMMY.  As a mom myself I was nice to see the “mommy side” of Jodi.  Yeah, I’m calling her Jodi as if we’re BFFs.  She was so easy to talk to that it felt like we were old friends.

Jodi has been married for almost 30 years but said she would give up her voice for love like Ariel did in the movie.  She said it would be hard because singing is such a huge part of her life but for her husband she would because she believes in true love.  She said they sing together a lot and her kids sing with them, too.  There is a lot of music in their house, a lot of singing.  When her children were younger she sang some Ariel songs to them but mostly she sang songs from church.  When she sang Ariel songs to her son it was like she was working and he wanted mommy for mommy so to him she mostly sang other songs to him.  When she sang Ariel songs in public he would even cover his ears when he was younger.  Now at 14 he enjoys his mother being Ariel and all the events they get to attend because of it.  Her daughter was different.  She always loved the Ariel songs and is now at 12 years old she is a nonstop singer.  Jodi said it is neat to watch her children share the same passion for singing that she had ever since she was little.  She recommends that every child that has a passion for singing to do it in any way they can whether it is at home, church, or anywhere else so you won’t have regrets when you’re older about not pursing something that was right for you.

It was interesting to hear the stories about the first time they watched The Little Mermaid from all the bloggers in the room.  Some were only a few years old when The Little Mermaid came out and others like myself were teenagers or older.  But the one thing we all had in common is our love of that redheaded mermaid.  Jodi agreed that all ages love The Little Mermaid.  Grandparents watched it with their daughters and are now seeing it with their grandchildren.  The Little Mermaid is a movie that has defined many childhoods.  Jodi said Cinderella was the movie that defined her childhood.  She loved that Cinderella came from one area and wished for something more, a dream.

Jodi was so gracious and said that every time she sings the songs from The Little Mermaid to a new audience it is like the first time.  It is always fresh and new like the day she recorded it.  She stressed how she is really grateful for her opportunities.  In addition to being the voice of Ariel she is also the voice of Barbie in the Toy Story movies as well as about 5 other ongoing characters for Disney.  Her voice work is her regular job but she also loves to travel and make appearances.  She said it is kind of hard to grasp the impact of portraying a character that is going to live long past her.  It’s overwhelming, not in a bad way.  But when she stops to focus on it, it takes her breath away.  Even now when she walks through an airport and sees a little girl in a [Little Mermaid] t-shirt or sees an Ariel doll in someone’s hand, she gets caught up in it and thinks “Wow!  What an amazing heavenly gift that I’m able to be a part of.”  Jodi Benson was asked if there was any scene or part of the movie that she would have changed.  She said that she wouldn’t change a thing in the movie, she just had to trust in the geniuses she was working with.  I, for one, am glad that she did or the Little Mermaid wouldn’t have been the generation defining movie that it is.

The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition is beautifully remastered and includes some awesome bonus features including clips from inside the animation studio.  Make sure to grab your copy but meanwhile here’s a clip of Jodi Benson singing Part of Your World for us.

Disclosure- I received the products mentioned below and/or compensation as part of the Superior Source Vitamins Brand Ambassador program.  All opinions are 100% my own.

superior source vitamin D
Vitamins are so important but sometimes getting my family to take them can be a challenge.  Then I was introduced to Superior Source Vitamins.  Superior Source Vitamins have MicroLingual® “Under the Tongue Technology” that work FAST.  They dissolve quickly under the tongue and are quickly absorbed by into the body.  My younger daughter can’t swallow pills so this is perfect!  When you swallow supplements, as much as 50% of the potency can be lost in the high acid environment of the stomach.

Vitamin D has recently been in the news and recent studies show how Vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin” supports bone and dental health, promotes healthy muscle tone, as well as enhancing a level mood and supporting healthy blood glucose levels.  It is not only safe but also vital for all ages.  Superior Source’s Vitamin D comes in a whole line of strengths for every member of your family.
SSV Vitamin D Family 5-Pack 9.17.13-1

Vitamin D Family Pack

1.   Baby Vitamin D – 200 IU: Vitamin D works in conjunction with calcium to promote the development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth.  Their Vitamin D products are D3, the finest source of Vitamin D available.

2.   Children’s Vitamin D – 400 IU: Vitamin D works in conjunction with calcium to promote the development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth.  Their Vitamin D products are D3, the finest source of Vitamin D available.

3.   Adult Extra Strength Vitamin D – 10,000 IU / 5,000 IU / 1,000 IU: Vitamin D works in conjunction with calcium to promote the development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth.  Their Vitamin D products are D3, the finest source of Vitamin D available.

Based on a review of 21 clinical trials, the  Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) has recommended that the tolerable upper intake level for D3 be increased from 10,000 International Units (IU).  That’s a big jump from the previously recommended 50 micrograms to 250 micrograms per day.  There simply aren’t any adverse effects from higher doses, and many health-promoting benefits to gain from substantial supplementation.
Vitamin D is known for:

  • Supporting bone health and muscle tone*

  • Maintaining a stable mood*

  • Enhancing immune system response*

  • Enhancing absorption of phosphorus, which supports metabolism and energy*

  • Maintaining healthy blood glucose and blood pressure levels already within the normal range*

While Vitamin D can be found in small amounts in milk, fish, liver, and egg yolk, the human body mainly relies on manufacturing it through exposure to sunlight.   With today’s modern diet and lifestyles, it can often be a challenge to get enough vitamin D each day. Some estimates claim as much as 60 percent of northern populations may be vitamin D deficient. With the new upper limit now set by the CRN, consumers are able to make better-informed decisions about appropriate vitamin D products.

As adults age, the natural decline of hormones results in a decline in the body’s ability to regulate mood and maintain healthy muscle and bone. Vitamin D is a great supplement for enhancing all of these processes.*

70% of Children in the United States are Running Short on Vitamin D!

Infants and Children

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 9% of children in the U.S. are “vitamin D deficient”, while 61% are technically running “insufficient”. Researchers have identified several possible risk factors for the nationwide deficiency and insufficiency:

  • Lack of sunshine exposure
  • Poor diet – not enough milk or fish
  • Breast-feeding – breast milk is often low in vitamin D
  • Darker skin – lighter skin tends to produce vitamin D more efficiently

More and more parents are discovering the importance of Vitamin D for enhancing immune system function and supporting development of strong bones, teeth, and muscle. Both infants and young children can benefit from supplementation.*

The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends 400 IU of supplemental vitamin D for breastfed newborns in the first few days of life, followed by a maintenance dose of 200 IU for infants up to two months old. Young children benefit from supplementation that brings their daily intake up to 400 IU. While changes in sun exposure and diet can help, supplementing is the only way to completely ensure that a child is getting enough vitamin D.

As a Superior Source Vitamin Brand Ambassador I received the Superior Source Vitamin D Family Pack to try with my family.  I love that there is a strength for every member of my family.  There is even a strength for babies that I am going to give to my neighbor who has a infant.  The pills are very tiny so my children don’t object to taking them.  They dissolve easily under their tongues and have a slight sweet, milky taste so my children take them easily as part of their morning routine with their breakfast.  As a mom I want as much vitamins and nutrition to go into my family’s body so I really like that Superior Source Vitamins go into the bloodstream so quickly to get right to work in the body.  We are looking forward to trying other Superior Source Vitamins.

1.   Advanced B-12 – 2,000 mcg: B-12 is essential for top energy levels, heart health and mental clarity. The innovative “under the tongue” MicroLingual® delivery system is designed to make B-12 immediately available for absorption into the bloodstream.

2.   NEW Vitamin C “Tangy” Orange Melts – 500 mg: Superior Source Vitamin C 500 mg utilizes a non-acidic form of C that doesn’t contribute to gastric irritation; and is sugar free. Although each MicroLingual® tablet contains very little sodium (only 1% of the Daily Requirement), it is helpful in offsetting the natural acidity of Vitamin C, creating a smoother, less acidic taste. The sodium in this product differs from common table salt in that it is not combined with chloride like the “salt” most often associated with hypertension. Additionally, Tangy Orange Melts are formulated with a proprietary blend including Acai Berry, Acerola Cherry and Citrus Bioflavonoids. NO sugar added; only sweetened with a little stevia. This is preferable to most “chewable” Vitamin C products that typically are loaded with lots of sugar.

New At Home Help For Couples Struggling With Infertility #TheStork

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Disclosure- This post was written by me as part of The Stork/Rinovum Women’s Health campaign from TheMotherhood.com.  All opinions are 100% my own.

My husband and I are blessed to have 2 healthy, beautiful daughters but there was a time that I didn’t think that being a parent would be possible.  My husband and I struggled with infertility for several years.  I was diagnosed with PCOS and my cycles were very irregular and very long.  We tried fertility drugs like Clomid and I was on a fertility monitor.  We did one IUI attempt that was not only unsuccessful but very costly.  We couldn’t afford to do any other IUI attempts and we definitely didn’t have the money to do IVF.  Several months after our failed IUI attempt we ended up seeing a peak on our fertility monitor and thankfully that was the month that we conceived our older daughter who will be 10 this December.

Our second time around we started trying to conceive pretty soon after we had our daughter because we knew it might take a while to get pregnant again.  I remember feeling so helpless because there weren’t many options to conceive that we could afford.  Thankfully two years later we were blessed with another healthy baby girl but I wish I would have had other options when I was trying to get pregnant.  And I know we weren’t alone in our struggles to conceive.  Today, approximately 7.3 million couples (1 in 6 couples) in the United States have difficulty conceiving.  Fortunately for couples trying to get pregnant now there is new option to help them conceive- The Stork.
The Stork LogoSteve Bollinger, CEO and Founder of The Stork and adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon of Pittsburgh personally experienced infertility issues with his wife.  He wanted to come up with a way to bring the fertility clinic into the privacy of people’s homes and that’s how The Stork was born.   Rinovum Women’s Healthy is a Pittsburgh, PA-based, privately-held women’s health company dedicated to bringing products into the market that will enhance women’s lives and empower them to take charge of their health.  The first product they focused on is the Rx device – The Stork.

So what is The Stork and why use it?  The Stork Conception System is indicated for assisted insemination in instances where low sperm count, sperm immobility, or hostile vaginal environment has been diagnosed.  The system (cervical cap in a condom-like silicone sheath) is used to collect semen into a cervical cap and then deliver the cap to the outside of the cervix as an aid to conception.  It is to be used at home following physician instructions and currently women need to get an Rx from their doctor to order The Stork.

The Stork isn’t for couples just starting out trying to conceive.  It is for couples who are at the point where sex is no longer for fun, but for propagation.  It costs much less than other approaches such as IUI and IVF.  Because of the low price on The Stork, many physicians are prescribing couples to do this process three times during a women’s optimal ovulation cycle for a cost of only $210 for the 3 systems.
fertility methods chart

The Stork Product photo 2
There are 2 main parts of The Stork system that work together- the cervical cap in a condom-like silicone sheath and the applicator.
The Stork Product photo
The cervical cap in the condom-like silicone sheath is easy for men to roll on just like a condom.  What is unique about The Stork system is that it involves natural intercourse where many of the other methods of trying to conceive with intervention do not involve intercourse such as IUI and IVF.  Once the man rolls the sheath on he is ready to have intercourse with his partner.  Once the sperm are in the cervical cap, it is placed in the applicator device and ready to be inserted into the woman.  It is similar to inserting a tampon.  When the cervical cap is ready to be removed it is removed similar to a tampon by pulling on the attached string.  With The Stork system being similar to familiar condoms and tampons, it makes it easy to use.   The Stock ships directly to your home for privacy.  There are two shipping options available- Overnight (if placed between M-F by 3 PM) or Ground (5-7 business days).  Contact healthcare provider for prescription and submit a copy of the prescription through email, fax or mail for verification by Rinovum.  Then purchase The Stork from the website and choose from one device or a one-month supply of three individually-packaged Stork devices ($79.99 for one or $210 for a one-month supply).  Pre-natal vitamins are also available for both the male and female on The Stork website.

Benefits of The Stork:
Proven technique: Physician technique now available for use in the privacy of home
Safe: FDA Authorized prescription product. Non-reusable device
Natural: Drug-free product that requires no drugs
Non-invasive: Requires no injections or surgery
Easy –to-Use: Condom-like in collection, tampon-like in delivery
Cost-effective: Compared to “next-step” treatment options

Have a story to tell?
Please share your fertility stories with us and comment below on my blog!

Factors That Add to the Era of Infertility
(all information and stats below were proviced by TheStork)
Increasing fertility issues related to environmental and lifestyle factors
40% of diagnoses are attributed to the male, 40% to the female and 20% are diagnosed as unexplained
Male Factor: estrogen levels are higher than ever before resulting in low sperm counts, motility and morphology issues
Female Factor: imbalanced vaginal pH, diminishing ovarian reserve, PCOS, endometriosis, etc.

Women are trying to conceive later in lifeFemales age 20-25, 25% chance per month of conceiving
Females age 30-35, 15% chance per month of conceiving
Females age 35-40, 10% chance per month of conceiving
Female age 40, 5% chance per month of conceiving

Limited options available for those initially struggling:
Long waiting periods given by physicians before further assistance for help
Under 35 years of age suggested to wait 12 months
Over 35 suggested to wait 6 months
Growing population of same-sex couples
Treatments today are slow, invasive and costly
Only 14 out of the 50 states require reimbursement (many of which are partial)

Risk factors of other pregnancy methods:
Multiple-births: one third of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) result in multiples
Genetic risks to offspring
Increased health risks to female
Women are placed on intensive hormone medications
Increased rates of breast and ovarian cancer
Treatment options are stressful which actually reduces the women’s chance of conceiving

The Future of The Stork:
Right now The Stork is only available on their website but they are hoping to be able to sell The Stock over-the-counter at local pharmacies in 2014.  They are also launching in Canada and EU during the end of 2013.  They are also working on other women’s health product designed for every stage of a woman’s life.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can you purchase The Stork at Walgreens or CVS?

Not today, but hopefully in about six months, we’ll be seeing The Stork available in regular pharmacies!

Will there be a price difference once the product is available over the counter?

It will be the same. The rational for costing and pricing is because we have to do all kinds of testing to make sure it is sperm-friendly and that takes time and money to do.

Does using the restroom cause any issues while using The Stork applicator?

Not at all! It will be out of the way of your urinary tract. Simply leave it in and go on with your business as normal.

Can I leave the applicator in overnight?

We are actually in the middle of a study now that will examine the applicator use over 12 hours.

Does The Stork have an online forum for users?

Our website and blog is pretty robust. The blog community is a positive place to go to receive feedback and help from other people.

Is this product made with latex?

No, everything is latex-free! This is a product made with silicone, which is the same product used for chin or breast implants. This is the most friendly, elastic material made for the body that you could have.

Does health insurance cover this?

Not today, but The Stork’s long term goal is that this will be available for everyone over the counter and to remove the prescription process right now.

What are the disposal requirements?
This is no different than a tampon applicator. When you’re done with it, simply throw it in the trash!

What is the success rate of The Stork?

We have not had enough patient volume to do that testing, although we that think over time we will even have a better result than IntraCervical Insemination (ICI) and IntraUterine Insemination (IUI), which is about a 10-20% success rate. We are in the middle of a study now and more clinical data will be coming from us the next couple of months.

Are you taking new participants for your studies?

We are, but we are only taking participants in the Pittsburgh area right now. If you’re interested, more information can be found here.

Who can write me a prescription for The Stork? How hard is it to get a prescription?

Your doctor, midwife or even nurse practitioner can write you a prescription. Basically anyone who is able to write a prescription can prescribe you The Stork. And any clinic can get it, as well. We’ve already begun conversations with big drugstore chains to start carrying our product. So look for it in Walgreens, CVS and other clinics soon!

If you have any resistance in having your doctor write you a prescription you can have them call us and we will have a representative talk to them. Most doctors like The Stork.

My medications cost $1,500. Can my doctor prescribe the stork to use with the injectables to try to avoid the $5,000+ the IUI cost?

Definitely. If you’re on drugs to support the ovulation process, this is a perfect moment to try the Stork before you try IUI! The Stork can be used alongside any medications to help with conception.

At what point should a couple use The Stork when trying to get pregnant?

When sex is no longer for fun, but for propagation- that is your moment!

Give Your Children YummySwaps With Yummy Snack Chips and Yummy Snack Bars

Disclosure- We received the products mentioned below to conduct our review.  We received no other compensation and all opinions are 100% our own.

Finding yummy AND healthy snacks for my children’s lunches and after school snacks is often a challenge.  The snacks they want are usually yummy but unhealthy.  They are full of fat, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and a ton of other junk that just isn’t healthy.  Yummy Health is trying to change that with a line of Yummy Snacks that are healthy, too.
Yummy Snacks
We were sent YummySnack Chocolate Blast Bars and YummySnack Chips.  The YummySnack Chips come in 3 kid friendly flavors- Nacho, Pizza, and Cheddar.  They are made entirely of real Wisconsin cheese and all natural seasonings.  Each serving contains 5 grams of protein and 16% of the RDA of calcium.  What you don’t get are hydrogenated oils, trans fats, gluten, or artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.  They are a great lunchbox replacement for potato chips.  My kids both enjoyed all the flavors of YummySnack Chips but their favorite was Cheddar.  They have a great crunchy texture.  I found them a little too salty for my taste and yet I found myself craving them later so I think they grew on me.  If your kids like cheesy snacks, they’ll love these.

The YummySnack Chocolate Blast Bars are a delicious chocolate-coated “better-than-candy” bar that is made with real incredients like cocoa, coconut, almond butter, and flax seed.  They provide a whopping 8 grams of fiber, 100 mg of Omega 3s, and only 8 grams of sugar.  That is amazing compared to most candy bars that have more than 20 grams of sugar.  Sure those numbers sound great but if it doesn’t taste good then it doesn’t matter, does it?  But that’s the great thing about the YummySnack Chocolate Blast Bars.  They are absolutely delicious.  You can definitely taste the coconut so if you or your kids aren’t coconut fans then they might not be for you.  But my younger daughter and I both love coconut so we found the bars absolutely scrumptious.  I could eat them every day and since they are lower on sugar and fat than a regular candy bar, I really could!

I like that with YummySnacks I don’t have to fight with my kids to eat healthier snacks.  They are something we can all agree on so making YummySwaps is easy with YummySnacks.

NeatReceipt Scanner Product Review

Disclosure:  I received the product mentioned below to facilitate my review.  I received no other compensation and all opinions are 100% my own.

neatreceipts scanner I was so tired of all the clutter around my house and I was looking for a better way to get organized.  I was always losing important papers, receipts, etc.  I have a drawer that is overflowing with receipts but they aren’t organized in any way so if I need a particular receipt it takes forever to find it.  And it wasn’t just receipts, it was important papers, mail, etc., too.  I was wasting so much time looking for things that should have been easy to find.  Time is precious to a busy mother so I knew I had to find a solution.  That’s when I found the NeatReceipt scanner.
neat receipt2
The NeatReceipt scanner is more than just a scanner, it is a digital filing system.  You start by installing the software that comes with the NeatReceipt scanner.  Once installed you can set up folders within the software for every member of your family, different categories and types of documents you will be storing, etc.  In my filing cabinet I initially set up a folder for each of my family members and also a folder for receipts so we can keep track of our spending.  Now that I have been using NeatReceipt for a while I have added more folders as I have needed them.  For example, my daughter was bitten by our neighbor’s dog.  I created a folder for all the medical forms, bills, hospital reports, etc. so I can have it all in one place.  I have also created folders for recipes, holidays, and so much more.  The NeatReceipt is AMAZING and I am not sure how we lived without it.
You can scan on the go, too.  The NeatReceipt doesn’t require a power outlet to work.  Simply attach it to your computer’s USB and you’re ready to scan no matter where you are.  It is slim, lightweight, and fits easily in your bag, laptop case, etc.

neat receipt
You have the choice of scanning items as receipts, documents, or contacts, or you can have the NeatReceipt auto-select what type of item you are scanning.  When you scan receipts, the NeatReceipt reads and adds the information for you such as vendor, category, date, payment type, and more.  You can also manually add the information as well.  The NeatReceipt also fills in your contact’s
information for you when scanning business cards as well.
neat receipt3
When you scan a receipt, documents, etc. you can then view your entire receipt or zoom to see specific parts which makes using the NeatReceipt very easy.
neat receipt5
You can search all of your documents for key words, phrases, etc., not just the titles.  This is great when you know a word that would be found in the document but you aren’t sure what the title is.  I was able to search for blankets I purchased by using the word fleece because I knew that they were fleece blankets.  I wasn’t sure what store I had purchased them from but NeatReceipt was able to find the correct receipt for me.
neat receipt4
Trying to figure out where your money is going?  With the NeatReceipt software you can create custom reports.
neat receipt6
Like collecting recipes and crafts?  You an import pictures of recipes, crafts, ideas, etc. and store them in your folders.  I often find crafts and recipes that I like in magazines.  I try to save them but I lose the magazine, forget which month I saw them in, etc.  With NeatReceipt I can scan in pages from magazines to easily save, store, and organize all the great recipes, crafts, ideas, etc. that I find.
neat receipt7
You can also save things you find on the internet as .pdf files and import them into your folders.  For example, I found some great recipes I liked on a website so I saved the web page as a .pdf file and imported in into my recipes folder.  Easy peasy!
neat receipt9
Another favorite use for our NeatReceipt is scanning all of our daughters’ assignments as soon as they walk in the door from school.  No more missing assignment sheets.  I don’t scan things that are due the next day if I know that my girls aren’t taking the sheets anywhere but for long term assignments, things that aren’t due for a few days, project instruction sheets, etc. I scan, scan, scan.  Now my girls can’t say they can’t do their homework because they don’t know where it is or what they have to do.  NO MORE EXCUSES!!!
neat receipt8
And of course you can scan your children’s art work if it is 8 1/2 x 11 or smaller.  You just have to be careful with artwork that has crayons on it because it can gunk up the rollers of the scanner.  I scanned my daughter’s picture that had a lot of crayon on it and the documents I scanned right after had a line down them.  It was easy to remedy though by using the cleaning sheets that come with the scanner.

Neat brings scanned documents to life, using Intelligent Text Recognition technology to read and understand key information, then automatically organizing what it sees. The resulting digital files are useful and usable – easy to find, easy to access, and easy to share.

Neat reads and extracts the information from whatever you scan. Receipts become digital records with vendors and amounts, business cards become digital contacts, and documents become fully keyword searchable.

Create tax or expense reports with your receipt data, or export to Excel®, Quicken®, or TurboTax®. Sync your contacts with Outlook® or Address Book. Find what you need with a keyword, and organize it however you like.

NeatDesk comes with a free 30-day trial of NeatCloud, which allows you to sync and back up your Neat files, and access them anywhere with your browser or mobile device.*

Disclosure- The Del Monte products, information and two gift packs have been provided by Del Monte.  All opinions are 100% my own and I received no other compensation.

It’s not always easy to get my girls to eat healthy. Thankfully they do love fruit. I always try to make sure we have healthy snacks to choose from in the house at all times. That way it’s easier for them to make good choices. One of the biggest issues we seem to have, is eating on the go. Seems like there is always something on our busy schedule. Taking fresh fruit and veggies isn’t always an option unfortunately. Have you ever seen a banana that’s been shuffled around in a bag for hours? No bueno!

Thankfully I recently discovered the intense greatness of my kids eating from a pouch. This method is perfect for on the go healthy eating, road trips, traveling and so much more. Not only is it convenient, but there’s no mess to clean up. It’s a total win win situation. This is why I was so in love when I received Del Monte Fruit Burst Squeezers. Of course they didn’t last that long though.

The reusable bags come in handy also. The insulated lunch bag is perfect for keeping the fruit pouches cold. Especially after a long day at soccer.

Take a Peek Inside Disney’s Animation Research Library #LittleMermaidEvent

Disclosure: Disney paid for my flights, lodging, and expenses for this trip but all opinions are 100% my own.
NOTE~ ALL IMAGES IN THIS POST ARE COPYRIGHT OF DISNEY.  I COULDN’T FIGURE OUT HOW TO REMOVE MY WATERMARK BUT THEY ARE DISNEY’S IMAGES.
DSC_1273
One of the most interesting parts of my Disney trip to Los Angeles last month was going to the Disney Animation Research Library.  The Animation Research Library is where most of Disney’s art is stored.  There are over 65 MILLION pieces of art currently in stored in the Animation Research Library from the early days of Disney films to the newest computer animated films and everything in between.  It is a great resource of Disney employees to use to look at older movies and gain inspiration for new movies.
As soon as we walked in the ARL we were told that we weren’t allowed to use pens anywhere the art was kept so we were all given pencils to take notes with.  There is no food or water allowed near the artwork and the use museum quality handling standards such as using white gloves when touching any artwork.
DSC_1235
Right now the ARL is working to digitally photograph all of the art to be able to preserve it forever.  There are 2 different processes for photographing the art.  They use high resolution cameras that use 240 mega pixels per file and take about 2 minutes PER PICTURE for older artwork and less stable artwork such as charcoal.  For animation art they use a lower resolution cameras (instant art camera) that use 60 mega pixels.  On average this camera can take 1,000 images per day per camera.  The ARL has scanned 800,000 pieces of art in the last 3 1/2 years!  They do daily quality control checks for color, continuity, etc.  They check for things such as hair, dirt, etc. that might have gotten into the picture and they are viewed at 24 frames per second of animation when they check so the person checking as to really keep an eye on details.
DSC_1236
The Design Department is the department that loads out art work for exhibits and creates lots of projects for theme parks, museums, and more.  There is no original art work in this department so they have a large workshop where they can put art together for projects, use all types of medium to design exhibits, and get really creative for many different Disney departments.  The Design Department uses colored pencils to enhance colors to levels that printers can’t.  They also help put books together such as a Tinkerbell book coming out this fall as well as a visual effect book on hand drawing that is coming out soon.  There are 2 musicians in the Design Department so we were told that there are lots of afternoon jam sessions to boost energy and creativity while working.   See the guitars?
DSC_1219

To really get a taste of Disney’s history we were lucky enough to be able to go inside several of Disney’s vaults- an area usually closed to non-Disney employees.  There are 11 vaults at the ARL and they contain over 40 years of Disney history.  They are all temperature controlled and COLD!  9 of the vaults house flat art such as individual cells, drawings, layouts, etc.  The art is all handled with white gloves and the vaults are earthquake protected since they are in California.  Much of the older sketches and storyboards have coffee rings, food stains, and notes on them from their original artists.  Early in Disney’s history they didn’t have scripts early in the movie making process.  The lines were all written on the story boards and we were able to see some examples of this.  In the 3D vaults models, puppets, and anything not flat is stored.  One interesting thing we learned is that they often used models to figure out shadows instead of getting a whole orchestra to come in.  The multi-plane camera paintings on glass are also store here.  The Little Mermaid was one of the last films that was created using a multi-plane camera.  It was also the last Disney movie to use hand painted cells (except for a small part at the end of the movie).
DSC_1258
The final stop on our tour of the Animation Research Library as to meet with Lella Smith, the Creative Director of The Little Mermaid.  She as across from us, behind a table covered in various original art work sketches from The Little Mermaid.  She shared with us how Ariel’s hair was designed with more body than individual strands of hair since she was underwater so her look was more like astronaut’s hair.  She shared with us how at one time Ursula was going to be designed after Joan Joan Collins.  It was Roy Disney who said no, no, no she should be more like an octopus.   I found it interesting to learn that Ariel was originally going to be a blonde.  I just can’t see Ariel as a blonde, can you?
DSC_1282
DSC_1290
It was originally discussed to make The Little Mermaid in the 1930’s but it was then shelved until it was finally made in 1989.   Now the new Diamond Edition of The Little Mermaid will be available October 1, 2013.  It is not simply a rescan of the original.  It is old Little Mermaid footage manipulated into a new 3D version.  Make sure to check it out!
