Did you know that coin lithium batteries can be found in most homes in everyday items like remote controls and keyless entry devices for your car yet many parents don’t know that if ingested, these coin-sized lithium batteries can cause serious chemical burns in as little as 2 hours?  In a survey conducted by Energizer, 62 percent of parents reported being unaware of the risk associated with coin lithium batteries.  I was contacted by Energizer to see if I would be interested in spreading the message on just how dangerous these batteries can be and how to keep children safe and of course I jumped at the chance.

In support of National Childhood Injury Prevention Week (September 1-7, 2013), the National Safety Council and Energizer have teamed up to share some important tips every parent should know to help prevent injuries from the ingestion of Coin Lithium batteries to help keep kids safe.

The 4 S’s of Coin Lithium Battery Safety

  • ·         STORE devices that use coin lithium batteries out of reach of children
  • ·         SECURE the battery compartments of devices
  • ·         SELECT battery packaging that meets federal guidelines for child resistance, such as Energizer’s coin lithium battery packaging
  • ·         SHARE this information with your friends and family

Energizer led the industry by being the first to voluntarily develop packaging for its 20 millimeter coin lithium batteries that meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) strict guidelines for child-resistant packaging.  They also developed a national awareness campaign in partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide called The Battery Controlled, which works to alert parents and caregivers to the dangers of swallowing coin lithium batteries. Identifying ways its products can help keep families safe is part of the Energizer commitment to designing its products with people in mind and investing in programs that have a positive impact on the world. that’s positivenergy™

If it is suspected that a child has swallowed a coin lithium battery, it is important to go to the emergency department immediately. For more information on child safety and coin lithium battery safety, please visit nsc.org, www.energizer.com, TheBatteryControlled.com and www.poison.org/battery. 

The CPSC imposes strict guidelines to determine if a packaging qualifies as effectively child-resistant. The packaging is tested with groups of children ages 42-51 months and also with senior adults ages 50-70. For a package to be child-resistant, a total of 80% of the children tested must not open the package in a full 10 minutes of testing. To make sure that adults are able to use a child-resistant package properly, 90% of adults tested have up to five minutes, and then another minute in a second test, to open and close the package (if applicable) so that it is child-resistant again.

We were given packages of Energizer coin lithium batteries as well as a package from a competitor to see which one would be easier for my children to open.   The competitor’s packaging was much easier to get into than Energizer’s Coin Lithium battery packaging.  We needed scissors to open the Energizer packaging while my daughter was able to open the competitor’s packaging by simply ripping the cardboard around the batteries.

It’s Back to School Time and Lice Are Back at School, too! Fairy Tales Lice Repellent Hair Care and Bug Repellent Product Review

It’s back to school time and children aren’t the only ones going back to school.  So are lice!  We were given several products from Fairy Tales Hair Care to review- Rosemary Repel® Conditioning Spray, Conditioning Shampoo, and our new favorite product, Bug Bandit .  We’ve been fans of Fairy Tales Hair Care for several years now and we use their products all the time.  We love all of their Rosemary Repel products for keeping lice away.  They are all natural, organic, and have a pleasant smell that keeps lice away.  They have a whole line of products that repel lice from shampoos and conditioners to hair gels and the rosemary repel conditioning spray we reviewed.  The conditioning spray is great because it helps detangle my girls’ hair and also prevents against lice.  I spray it on every morning before school when I am putting their hair up in ponytails.

Fairytales Hair Care also has great products to keep hair healthy.  The Conditoning Shampoo we received is great.  It doesn’t take much to get a good lather, my girls can shampoo by themselves, and because it is a conditioning shampoo they can skip adding extra conditoner.  The Conditioning Shampoo leaves their hair soft and silky.

Our new favorite product comes from Fairy Tales’ Bad Bugs line.  We received Bug Bandit which is an insect repellant that is organic, and chemical and Deet free which is important to me as a parent.  My younger daughter gets terribly bitten by mosquitoes so I was so excited when I saw that Fairy Tales made a natural product to keep mosquitoes away.  It smells nice, is easy to use, and works great.  It has really helped my daughter stay bug bite free on our nighttime walks with our new puppy.  They also make a spray to kill bed bugs.

When I was invited to the Good Cook Stuffed Burger Challenge the first thing that popped into my head was French Onion Soup.  I know that is a weird thing to think about when given a burger challenge but I figured I’d give it a try and I am glad I did.  It came out AMAZING.  The cheese and onions inside combined into creamy cheese once inside the burger, the Gruyere on top got nice and crispy under the broiler like it does on French Onion Soup, and then Muenster Cheese on top was nice and gooey!  It was an amazing flavor combination and I am so excited to share it with my readers.Stuffed French Onion Burger

For this recipe I used the Good Cook knife and cutting board to slice the onions, the Good Cook standing grater to shred the Gruyere cheese (note- freeze the cheese for 10 minutes prior to shredding to make it easier), and the Good Cook Burger Stuffer, turner, and Cast Iron Grill Pan to make the burgers.  I love that the burger press makes it easy to create a “pocket” in the burger to stuff it.

Stuffed French Onion Burger- 2 servings

Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
4 tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
2 yellow onions (sliced)
1 can beef broth
2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
1 garlic clove (chopped/pressed)
2 slices Muenster Cheese
1/3 pound Gruyere Cheese (shredded)
2 French Rolls

Directions:
Melt butter and 2 tablespoons olive oil in medium high skillet.
Add sliced onions and saute until browned (approx. 35 minutes).
Add beef broth, garlic, and poultry seasoning to skillet and simmer for 5 minutes.
Reserve liquid and set aside for onions to cool.
Mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce.
Put about 1/4 pound of ground beef mixture in the Good Cook stuffed burger press and press to form a well for filling.
Layer about a tablespoon of shredded Gruyere cheese, about a tablespoon of onions, and then a second layer of shredded Gruyere cheese.
Top with about 1/4 pound of ground beef mixture and use top of burger press to press and seal the burger.
Grill until desired temperature.  Meanwhile warm up left over onions.
Top with shredded Gruyere cheese and broil until golden brown.
Top with onions and a slice of Muenster cheese.
Place burger in still warm oven to melt (but not brown) cheese.
Toast French rolls and drizzle with olive oil and reserved broth from onions.
Top roll with burger and enjoy!

As a mom of 2 daughters there are dolls that I won’t let my girls play with because they dress inappropriately for my taste or I just don’t think they show good values to my daughters.  I love that the Beatrix Girls have their own style but they dress in a way that I wouldn’t mind my daughters dressing.  They may only be dolls but to young girls they become real when they watch their videos and listen to their songs.  They empower and inspire young girls through their fashion, music, and lifestyles.  Through their stories girls learn that it takes perseverance and tenacity to achieve their goals.  That is a lesson that I try to instill in my own daughters.

Another message that the Beatrix Girls promote is making the world a better place which is so important to my own daughters who get involved in our community to make positive changes.   I love how each girl has a fully developed personality with her own substance, style and traits that my girls can admire and identify with.  When you watch the videos, they are not high budget productions.  They are created with the actual dolls so their lips don’t move and you can see the hands of the people moving them.  But that is part of the charm of The Beatrix Girls.  It shows girls that they, too, can create different scenarios and story lines for their dolls to act out.  I think these dolls truly inspire creativity and imagination in girls.

We received Brayden to review and right away my girls were admiring her cool sense of style.  They love that she has dark purple hair and bright purple eyes.  My older daughter likes to write stories and has written a few songs with her class at school so she loved to learn that Brayden is the main song writer for The Beatrix Girls.  We went to The Beatrix Girls site and checked out all of their songs and videos and my girls can’t wait until new ones are added.  My girls are hoping to collect all 4 girls so they can make their own videos.  We hope in the future that The Beatrix Girls come out with accessories like guitars, a drum set, new clothes, etc. so they can really pretend to be them with props and all!  Here is one of our favorite videos.
