Babies bring great joy and excitement to families and most parents can’t wait to share their new baby with their loved ones.  But exposing a new baby to family and friends can be dangerous for young babies, especially for babies who are born prematurely and may have immature immune systems and underdeveloped lungs.
One of the biggest threats to new babies is a common virus called respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. This virus can live for several hours on surfaces such as countertops, toys, and doorknobs, so it is extremely easy to spread through touching, hugging, or kissing.  I was surprised to find out that almost 100% of children contract RSV by their second birthday.  I had always thought it was just a virus that premature babies could get.  Then I found out that in most older children, RSV runs its course with mild symptoms similar to the cold or flu, and parents may not even know their child has the virus.  I guess one of the times my girls had what I thought was a cold, could really have been RSV.  But my family is lucky because my girls were not premature and did not have weakened immune systems.  They probably had RSV and hardly had any symptoms.  But in very young babies, and especially preemies, RSV can lead to a serious respiratory infection.
Because of the danger of RSV, parents of new babies, especially preemies, need to be especially careful about exposing their infants to visitors and the germs they my bring.  But this can be especially difficult for family members and friends to understand.  They are excited to meet the new bundle of joy and it can be hard to explain your concerns over the germs they may bring.  On the bottom of this post I will share a sample letter from www.rsvprotection.com to help new parents share their concerns and wishes with friends and family.  It is important to communicate your concerns to family and friends before they meet with your new baby.

As a guest of someone who has recently had a new baby, it is important to know how to act and prepare for the visit, too.  Remember that babies are susceptible to germs, so always wash your hands and ask before touching a baby.  If you have been sick recently, stay away until you are no longer ill.

It is probably a good idea to keep toddlers and school aged children away from the new baby for a while, too.  Toddlers and school aged children carry germs that can easily be spread to the baby.  Make sure to ask permission to bring your young children around the new baby before you do so.
Please be respectful if the new parents aren’t ready for visitors.  Remember that their concerns are valid and don’t be offended.  They are only trying to protect their baby.  There are other ways to assist and show support to families with newborns (ie., laundry duty or bringing dinner), while still respecting the parents’ efforts to keep their baby safe from germs during these first few vulnerable months.

A few tips to remember when a loved one has a new baby (from www.rsvprotection.com):

  • Call before you visit. New parents need time to set up a routine and bond. By giving them time to do so before you visit, you are respecting the new family.
  • Postpone a visit if you feel that you may be getting sick, have recently been ill or exposed to illness.
  • Remember that parents know best. If you feel they are being overprotective or overly cautious, just consider that only they know what’s best for the health of their new son or daughter.
  • Offer to do something to ease their responsibilities as they spend time as a family, such as laundry, cooking or dishes. Sleep-deprived moms and dads will appreciate your help!

If you do schedule a visit with a new baby:

  • Wash your hands frequently—upon entering the home and especially prior to holding the baby. Parents, and the new baby, will appreciate it.
  • Leave toddlers at home, especially during the winter months. Young children, especially if they attend day care or preschool, often carry germs and viruses, like RSV, that are easily spread.

A few facts about RSV that all parents, caregivers and loved ones should know:

  • Almost every baby will contract RSV by age 2, but only 1/3 of moms say they’ve heard of the virus.
  • Serious RSV infection is the leading cause of infant hospitalization, responsible for more than 125,000 hospitalizations and up to 500 infant deaths each year.
  • RSV occurs in epidemics each fall through spring. The CDC has defined “RSV season” as beginning in November and lasting through March for most parts of North America.
  • There is no treatment for RSV, so it’s important for parents to take preventive steps to help protect their child (e.g., wash hands, toys, bedding frequently; avoid crowds and cigarette smoke).
  • Certain babies are at an increased risk of developing serious RSV infection, so it’s important to speak with a pediatrician to determine if a baby may be at high risk for RSV, and discuss preventive measures.
  • Symptoms of serious RSV infection include: persistent coughing or wheezing; rapid, difficult, or gasping breaths; blue color on the lips, mouth, or under the fingernails; high fever; extreme fatigue; and difficulty feeding. Parents should contact a medical professional immediately upon signs of these symptoms.

An Open Letter to Loved Ones from (www.rsvprotection.com)

All newborns are vulnerable during the first few months of life, but certain babies—especially those born prematurely or with certain chronic conditions that make them especially susceptible to infection—need extra protection while their immune systems develop. As the parent of a high-risk infant, sometimes it’s hard to explain to friends and family why you take certain precautions. Parents of healthy, full-term babies may not understand and some may perceive your actions to be “extreme” or “paranoid.” But you know how important it is to prevent your baby from getting sick.

If you haven’t quite found the words to explain why you wish to take extra precautionary measures to keep your baby healthy, the below open letter may be a helpful tool in explaining your situation. Or, if you know of someone who recently had a high-risk baby and is having difficulty finding acceptance and understanding, share this with them and let them know they aren’t alone.

Dear [Loved One],

I know sometimes people think I go to extreme lengths to protect [Baby], and I understand my methods may seem strange. I wanted to send this note to you to give you insight on what life is like when you’re perceived as an “overprotective” parent.

[Baby] was born [prematurely or with X condition], which puts [him/her] at an increased risk of developing a serious infection from many common, seemingly harmless, germs and viruses. For example, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an extremely common virus that all babies contract by their second birthday. Most infants have the immune system and lung strength to fight off the virus, but in high-risk babies, it can cause a very serious infection. In fact, serious RSV infection is the leading cause of infant hospitalization. Note: For more information on the dangers of RSV, you can check out www.RSVprotection.com.

Because [Baby] is so vulnerable to RSV and other illnesses, it’s important to us to avoid exposing [him/her] to these germs. Viruses like RSV are highly contagious and can live for hours on objects like countertops, doorknobs and toys. Frankly, the idea that visitors may unknowingly bring in these dangerous germs is very scary to a new parent!

So I’m asking that you please be patient with me and my precautions to keep [Baby] safe. Please contact me before dropping by for a visit, and know that while I hate turning you away or asking you not to come over, it’s always for a good reason and never personal.

And when we’re eventually ready for visitors, please remember that prevention is key to keeping [Baby] safe.

  • Please refrain from visiting when you are sick or if you’ve been around someone ill.
  • Please make sure your clothes are clean and you haven’t smoked or been around smokers recently. Smoke can be very dangerous for underdeveloped lungs.
  • Let’s wait until [Baby] is strong enough to be introduced to your little one(s), You know I love seeing [him/her], but toddlers and school-aged children are very likely carriers of germs and viruses.
  • Wash your hands immediately when you come into the house, or sanitize during your visit – this is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs. Wash, wash, wash!

I hope this helps to explain a bit better why I’ve been keeping [Baby] in and, often, visitors out. I appreciate your understanding and look forward to seeing [Baby] grow stronger and healthier everyday with your help!

Best,

[Mom]

Let me start by apologizing for not updating last week.  Both of my kids were home sick for most of the last 2 weeks and my husband was also sick in the middle of all of it.  So needless to say I’ve had my hands full.  Thankfully they are all back to normal and my children are going back to school tomorrow.
I’ve been doing the Nutrisystem’s Success Select Women’s Program for 3 weeks now and I am really getting the hang of it.  I have been making sure to keep snacks handy with me when I go out so I won’t be tempted to eat things I shouldn’t.  I also usually have a Nutrisystem lunch in my purse so I don’t have to worry about not being home for lunch.  There are many ready to eat options, such as several different chocolate bars that are part of the Nutrisystem program for lunch that this is easy to do.  My favorite is the Fudge Graham Bar.  Who wouldn’t want to be able to eat a chocolate bar for lunch?!?!
I missed posting my weigh in for week number 2 but I was 117.2 pounds for my week 2 weigh in.  That’s 1.6 pounds lost in my second week on Nutrisystem and a total of  4.8 pounds by March 12th.
This last week was a little more difficult for me in general because both kids were home sick but since I had prepared all of my veggies on Sunday night, I was able to just pull them out and add them to my meals.  Being prepared really makes things much easier.  My birthday was in the middle of last week but I didn’t really celebrate it yet since everyone was sick.  I plan on finding some healthy options when we do finally go out to dinner for my birthday.
I weighed myself  two days early this week because I wanted to make sure I got this post up.  Yesterday morning my current weight is 214.6 for a total of 9 pounds!!!  1 more pound to go until I earn my first bear.  Nutrisystem sends you a little bear for every 10 pounds you lose (like a Beanie Babies).  I can’t wait to earn my first one!
I know I am long overdue for a “before” picture but I hardly wore make up most of the last few weeks.  I will have someone take my picture for me this week now that things are getting back to normal.
On Monday, March 19th (tomorrow), Marie Osmond will be on QVC sharing her Nutrisystem favorites.  She’ll be doing two shows – one at 11:00 AM (EST) and second at 6:00 PM (EST) – to share her inspirational Nutrisystem success story with QVC and share about the program.   Please check it out!

I LOVE trying out new make-up so I was so excited to be selected to review Pür Minerals Makeup.  I received Pür Minerals Makeup 4-in-1 pressed mineral makeup, 4-in-1 tinted moisturizer, and Pout Plumping Lip Gloss in Passion.  They had also sent me Lava Rocks but my next door neighbor accidentally threw out the box that they were in- long story!  So I never got to try those unfortunately.  But I really liked everything else I tried.
I have never really been a foundation girl but Pür Mineral’s 4-in-1 mineral tinted moisturizer is a very lightweight formula that blends into my skin very naturally.  I like that it is a moisturizer, primer, foundation and SPF 20 sunscreen all in one.  As a busy mom, I love any product that can do the job of more than one.  The moisturizer goes on smoothly and blends effortlessly.  I mainly wear foundation for special occasions but with the Pür Mineral’s 4-in-1 mineral tinted moisturizer I have been wearing it more often as it gives me a nice  glow.

I love the color of the Pür Minerals Pout Plumping Lip Gloss.  This deep raspberry lip gloss called Passion had just the right amount of golden shimmer to make my lips look fresh and full without overpowering the rest of my face.  My lips feel smooth and silky without feeling sticky which I hate.

My favorite of the Pür Minerals items I tried is the 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation.  This little workhorse is a foundation, natural mineral makeup concealer, powder and SPF 15 protection all in one.  Some days I hardly have time to comb my hair in the morning so I love that no matter how little time I have, I always have time to quickly grab my makeup brush and swirl on some Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation to give me coverage and make my skin look fresh and smooth.  I tried the Golden Medium shade and it compliments my skin tone well.  I love that it had SPF 15 in it so it not only makes my skin look beautiful, but it also protect it.
I am so excited that I was selected with 100 other bloggers to share a great giveaway-  20 readers will win a Spring Kick-Off Kit including the new 4-in-1 pressed mineral foundation and tons of new spring arrivals.  One Grand Prize winner will receive a FREE iPad!  Check out Pür Minerals here and enter to win below.

10 Things Parents Should Know About Disney’s John Carter

I’m sure many of you saw my personal review of John Carter found here but here is another interesting article.

10 Things Parents Should Know About Disney’s John Carter

By Tony Sims

I recently had the tremendous privilege to see an advanced screening of Disney’s John Carter. I know there have been many mixed signals in the media lately concerning this movie. I hope that the answers to these questions help our readers make a more informed decision for themselves.

1. What’s it all about?

The author, Edgar Rice Burroughs, wrote the John Carter series of sci-fi/adventure stories about 100 years ago. Burroughs was also the author of Tarzan and many other stories. The main character, John Carter, is transported to the planet Mars. On Mars, he discovers he has superior physical abilities, such as the ability to leap 100 yards and unmatched physical strength. He eventually wins the respect of the local population of alien creatures know as the Tharks. He also becomes involved in assisting the human-like royalty of Mars against the uprising of a group who seeks to strip-mine the planet. If any of these concepts sound familiar – that is because much of our superhero fantasy and science-fiction over the past century has been created from ideas borrowed from Burroughs’ classics.

2. Will I like it?

Yes. If you are reading this site, most likely yes. If you like Star Wars or any other action sci-fi, then yes. You can really tell this movie was created with the passion that only a lifelong fan of this series could devote. Andrew Stanton, the writer/director, was actually working on this film’s screenplay while WALL-E was still in production (before a studio even signed on to do the project).

3. Will my kids like it?

If they are like you and you agree to the above, then yes. I plan on taking my 7-year-old son this weekend and I believe he will love it. It has something for everyone. Take your daughters to see this. It has amazing, strong female characters. In fact, many times they are the ones to fight the battles. Everyone will love Woola by the way – you’ll see.

4. How faithful is it to the books?

Disclaimer – I have not read the books in over 20 years. Even though many sites state that this movie is based on The Princess of Mars, actually it uses elements from Burroughs’ first three books in the series. This way, the audience gets to see the best parts of a third of the series, including more alien life and epic battles. One main difference between the books and movie is how he is transported to Mars; but fans of the book most likely won’t be disappointed with this change.

5. When’s the best time for a bathroom break?

At exactly 1 hour and 5 minutes in there are a few minutes of dialogue you could miss. When the heroes stop for a breather after the halfway point battle – head to the latrine.

6. How are the special effects?

Fantastic. What else could you expect from a movie that was created by Andrew Stanton? The man is behind WALL-E, Toy Story (1, 2 & 3), Finding Nemo, A Bug’s Life, and Monsters, Inc. Not to mention (if you believe the press buzz going around), this movie had a budget of nearly a billion dollars. The imagery is simple breath-taking.

7. What about the 3D?

This is probably one of the only movies where I would say that seeing it in 3D is worth it. Stanton made this movie to use 3D effects just to give the movie depth. This means that there are no “gimmicks” that use the 3D to overwhelm the viewer with “jumping out of the screen” surprises. Also this movie is filmed in primarily desert type regions, so the subtle darkening effect that 3D glasses tend to have on movies is not as noticeable. That being said, seeing it in 2D would not diminish the quality of the movie either.

8. It is rated PG-13. How PG-13 is it?

This was one of my primary concerns. I have younger children, so I wanted to see if this would be a movie I could introduce them to. Here’s the skinny: there is a lot of violence. The majority of the bloodshed is greenish alien blood, so some parents might find it easier to stomach with their children than others. Most of the fighting is sword play, so keep that in mind also. Hardly any foul language is spoken and there are no real intimate moments that need young eyes covered. [SPOILER ALERT, BUT IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS TAKING YOUNG CHILDREN] The one real moment I had concern about occurs in a flashback sequence where you briefly see the clothed remains of his dead wife and child. This is the one event that is a bit disturbing on anyone’s eyes – young or old. This scene takes place during an onslaught of a fight scene. If you want to cover younger eyes, here it is – when the Thark army is taking on John Carter by himself, he goes into a sort of battle rage. When you see this scene, he will flashback to images of his Virginia home which was burned to the ground, he will go back to the fight, the next flashback is that image – after that it is done. [END SPOILER]

Your mileage may vary on this. I will be taking my 7-year-old to see it, but he has also seen the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy (does that make me a bad dad?). If he can handle the battle of Helm’s Deep, then he can definitely handle this.

9. It is a Disney movie. Why can I not find any John Carter toys in the stores?

Disney decided with this movie not to license mass market toys. I know, this is a strange decision; after all, they produced Pirates of the Caribbean toys! Well, that has a good bit to do with it also. The other non-animated toy lines which have been produced in the past have never been big hits except with the collectors. With that in mind, Disney is only going to license John Carter to higher-end collectibles manufacturers. If the movie proves to be huge and the sequels get their green lights, then maybe we will see the mass market open up.

10. Will I want to see it again?

Yes – and you will hope that it does well enough to merit the two sequels that Andrew Stanton already has written and is ready to produce. You will probably want to go ahead and pre-order it on Blu-ray as well.

If you recall I started on the Nutrisystem’s Success Select Women’s Program last Monday.  (see my previous post here)
I need to get my hubby to take a “before” picture because I already started losing weight and I want the picture to show my weight loss.  But by the time my husband comes home from work each night I am looking too frazzled to take a picture.  At least that’s what I keep telling myself but I think it’s more of a fear to get IN FRONT of the camera.  I have avoided being in front of the camera for a while now because I am the heaviest I have ever been.  I think subconsciously I just haven’t wanted to see and face the truth.  But I promise the truth starts now.
Here goes- My starting weight last Monday February 27th, 2011 was 223.6 pounds.  ACK!!!!  I know my mother and sister will probably comment about how I just put my weight out there for all the world to see.  But the only way I am going to get through this is with the support of my readers.  And I want to be a source of support and inspiration for my readers, too.  So there it is.  My highest weight ever.  But I hope to never get that high again.  I promise I will have my husband take a “BEFORE” picture of me this week, too.

So now to the nitty, gritty of the  Nutrisystem’s Success Select Women’s Program.  I find this a simple program to follow but then again I did well with the other popular prepackaged food diet a few years ago and lost 50 pounds.  This time the trick will be KEEPING the weight off!  Anyway, each day starts off with a Nutrisystem breakfast.  I get to choose from cereal, muffins, pancakes, omelets (which I LOVE because I add my own veggies to them), bars, and more.  I also get to have a yummy protein shake with breakfast.  The shake comes in strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, and coffee flavors but I add sugar free, calorie free flavoring syrups to mine sometimes to change the flavor.  Vanilla with raspberry syrup added is really yummy but looks like Pepto Bismol.  I get to have a Power Fuel between breakfast and lunch.  This can be a some nuts, nut butter, lean mean, and many other items with protein.  Then I have a Nutrisystem lunch with another Power Fuel.  My afternoon snack is a Smart Carb.  That can be a piece of fruit, whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, and more.  Dinner consists of a Nutrisystem meal and another Smart Carb.  And then I am also allowed one Nutrisystem dessert per day which includes both sweet items such as ice cream and cake and savory items such as popcorn and pretzels.
Throughout the day I drink at least 8 glasses of water.  I usually add some lime or lemon juice and Splenda in it.  I also make sure to add at least 4 servings of vegetables which is easy for me.  I usually start the week sauteing lots of veggies so they are ready when I need them all week.  Plus I eat raw baby carrots when I am hungry and a salad now and then.  I also bought a hot air popcorn popper on Amazon with gift cards I earned on Superpoints and I am allowed a few cups of hot air popcorn a day as part of the 3 “extras” I am allowed.
I have been pleasantly surprised that I have liked most of the meals.   I love the omelets for breakfast.  My favorite lunch is the steak and cheese melt and the Steak Tagliata is one of my favorite dinners so far.  The chocolate cake dessert is yummy, especially with fresh strawberries on it and the popcorn came in handy at the movies last night.  The only meal so far that I haven’t liked is the meatloaf and mashed potatoes.  I also don’t love the ice cream.  It tasted too fake to me.  Other than that, everything has been great so far.

Here are some of my tips-

1. Put the Nutrisystem meals on a plate and add veggies to the plate looks full.
2.  If you aren’t really hungry but you want to keep your mouth busy, chew some sugar free gum.  When I went with my family to see Phineas and Ferb they wanted some food and I had to sit in the middle of the 3 of them passing french fries back and forth.  They smelled great but I popped a piece of gum in my mouth and just watched the show.
3. If you think you are still hungry after a meal, drink some water and wait first.
4. Drink a glass of water before your meal so you aren’t so starving when you start.
5. BE PREPARED!  Make sure you have your meals and snacks with you.   Keep a shelf stable meal with you during the day in case you don’t make it home to have a frozen meal.  Also, by keeping allowed snacks handy, you won’t be tempted to eat the wrong thing.
6. Cut up and prepare your veggies when you get home from the store.  You are more likely to eat them if they are already washed, cut, cooked, etc.
I should be getting 3 ten minute exercise sessions per day.  So far- eh, not so much!  But I plan on changing that really soon.  I have a membership to 24 Hour Fitness so I hope to start working out again.

And now for the big moment- My 1 week weigh in.  I weighed myself yesterday since yesterday was the one week mark.  As of yesterday morning I am down to 218.8 so just under 5 pounds lost this first week!  I am SOOO excited and I hope to continue to lose the weight, gain better health, and share my journey with all of you.

Week 1- Lost 4.8 pounds
