I am proud to have a guest blogger for this book review- my 7 year old daughter wanted to write this book review since she read the book.  This is her first book report and blog post.  I’m so excited!  So here goes.

The Cardboard Girl Gives Bullying The Flick by Marika Spaseska

Book Review by A.N.

The Cardboard Girl was my favorite book because Cora taught Erin how to stand up to Brooke, the bully.  This book is about a girl named Erin who gets bullied by a girl named Brooke.  Cora keeps trying to help, but Erin thinks Cora won’t be able to help her.  Erin brother, Michael, her parents, her babysitter, and everybody she knows ignore her except for Cora.  Erin keeps having bad dreams about Brooke.  In one of the chapters Brooke says that she is going to kill Erin if she doesn’t invite her to her birthday party.  Cora overheard and told Erin to talk to the teacher.  The teacher told Erin that Brooke was from a big family and she was used to talking in that kind of language.  The teacher said that Brooke meant that she really wanted to go to the birthday party and she felt left out.  Brooke didn’t know how to properly ask for what she wanted so she bullied instead.   Brooke told Erin that if she told on her again that that was it and she would hurt her really badly.  At the end of the book Brooke told Erin that she has a lot of problems at home and her father always yelled and that is why she was being such a bully.  In the end Erin stood up to Brooke.  Brooke asked if they could be friends and Erin said yes.

I hope you will read this book and like it as much as I did.  I learned from this book that you should never stand up to a bully alone.  You should always ask for a grown ups help when dealing with a bully.  You can try to show bullies that you don’t care that they are picking on you and maybe they will stop.  Bullies bully other people to make them feel bad about themselves and to make themselves feel better.  Bullies also bully other people to bring those people down and to bring themselves to the top.

From Cori- As a parent I like that this fictional book that involves bullying and teaches young girls how to deal with a bully if they get in that situation.   This book is great for opening up a dialogue with young girls about bullying.  We need to empower young girls to be able to talk about being bullied and give them the tools to handle this type of situation.

Top 10 Bully-proof tips to protect your children from the author, Marika Spaseska-

Top 10 Bully-proof tips to protect your children include:
·         Develop and sustain positive, core values. It is vital that children know what is acceptable, to have respect for others, know their boundaries and values. For example, it is NOT okay to exclude others from being friends; it’s not okay to put others down, etc.

·         You are responsible for your child’s self esteem. Children lack the discernment and insight to know that perception or opinion may not be true. Empower your child’s self esteem and confidence and create an environment where your child feels they can openly talk to you. Children may not want to tell anyone if they feel they deserve this type of treatment (bullying), caused it, or that telling would make it worse.

 ·         Teach kids to care. Encourage kids to show they understand and care for others when they’re upset or having a hard time. You want your kids to grow up to understand children’s emotions, feelings, their fears, wishes and dreams.

 ·         Encourage your children to develop outside, strong relationships and social and physical activities so that they have a life outside of school. Exercise may make kids feel better, too. Support them to make friends outside of school, create time for them, invite them home or to outings. By doing this they are not solely relying on friends at school.

 ·         Break down gender roles – girls are expected to be nice and pretty and boys to be manly, rough and outgoing. If you don’t conform to this stereotype you can be picked on or put-down. Children can be whoever they want to be. They need to value themselves and not be judgmental of what others do or look like or if they stray from these norms.

·          Encourage kids to open up about their worries, to talk about things that upset them. By talking about what is happening to someone, be it family, friends, teacher or a counsellor – they will reduce their stress and anxiety levels. There is evidence to suggest that confident children who feel supported by their families and friends are better able to cope with bullying and other pitfalls.

 ·         Empower children to take some control themselves over their behaviour (their mood/temper). This will make your life a bit easier and they will feel better, too, if they can learn to better deal with their frustrations. For example, skills they need to learn when frustrated include: walk away, time alone, time out, writing thoughts down, playing or doing something else and talking to someone about what is going on for them. Do not support aggressive behaviour nor conduct yourself in this manner, as children learn directly from parents and others closest to them. Praise them for good behaviour.

·         Have discussions early with your children about what is bullying and what they can do to stop it. You want to teach your child that if faced with bullying, that they can speak up: tell the kid who is bullying them to stop hurting them or others and that this is unfair. You want your child to be able to tell the ‘bully’ that what they are saying is nasty and hurtful and that they have no right to speak to them like that. Inspire your children: it’s ok to stand up for themselves.

 ·         Teach your kids not to watch and be a bystander to bullying. Tell them that if they stay, it may encourage someone who bullies. Support your kids to be able to tell the person who bullies to stop or urge the other child who is being bullied to walk away with them.

 ·         Don’t allow children to watch violent TV or participate in violent video games.

Candle Warmer, Etc. Product Review and Giveaway

I always used to be a candle lover.  That was one thing that my husband first noticed about me.  I always had candles burning.  Then we had kids and I was afraid to burn candles in our home.  I have recently been introduced to Candle Warmers, Etc. and their line of warmers and I am hooked.  They were kind enough to send me a Black Square Illumination Warmer and a Jack-O-Lantern Plug-In Fragrance Warmer.

The Black Square Illumination Warmer is a beautiful edition to my home.  It matches any room I put it in and the light that flickers out of it is relaxing.  My children especially love the Jack-O-Lantern Plug-In Fragrance Warmer because it lights up through the eyes, nose, and mouth of the pumpkin.  It is adorable.

I told Candle Warmers, Etc. to surprise me with the scents that they chose to send me and they picked 2 perfect ones for me- Hot Maple Toddy- A warm, after dinner drink with pronounced notes of maple and rum, leading to a buttery, creamy vanilla and caramelized sugar base note  and Pumpkin Spice- The fragrance of sweet cream pumpkin, complimented with nuances of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, and ginger rounded out with buttery vanilla notes. Both scents were strong enough to fragrance my house but not so strong that they were overpowering.  Both of my daughters are sensitive to smells and they both enjoyed both the Hot Maple Toddy and the Pumpkin Spice fragrances.

You can check out Candle Warmers, Etc.’s website here to purchase your own candle warmers and accessories.

Practice Candle-Sense-

Fall and winter holidays are marked by family and friend gatherings. Candles are a common décor item and help set a festive mood.
While candles improve a room’s ambiance through lighting and fragrance, an open flame can also spell deadly danger in under 60 seconds. Decorating safely is the key to protecting your home and loved ones during the holidays.
Candle Warmers Etc. encourages “candle-sense” and suggests the following candle tips to help keep family and friend gatherings safe:
• Never leave a candle unattended and keep burning candles away from items that
can catch fire.
• Use candle holders that don’t easily tip over and place on a sturdy, level surface.
• Don’t burn a candle all the way down as the holder or
container might catch fire.
• Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
• Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets, and
keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet.
• Before you go to sleep, make sure your fireplace fire is out
completely, candles are blown out, and strings of lights and
decorations are turned off.
• Instead of an open flame, use candle warming plates,
lamps and lanterns. For example, the Aurora candle
warmer lamp quickly heats the top of a wicked or wickless
jar candle to release the candle’s fragrance. And a
decorative candle warming lantern provides ambiance
without dangerous flames.
• Choose holiday decorations that are flame resistant or
flame retardant.

Happy’s Christmas Gift- A Book Review

Happy’s Christmas Gift by Geoff Parker Sr. and Illustrated by Lisa Fox

From The Book:

“Oh no! Happy is in trouble again! Having gone out to post his Christmas letter to Santa, he suddenly finds himself on an unexpected journey.

Although Happy is cold and scared at first, his adventure takes a turn and delivers him to magical lands where he discovers that dreams really can come true. Can Happy save the day? And more importantly, will he get home in time for Christmas?

An adorable character and wonderful, traditional Christmas story brought to life by beautiful illustrations. A treasure of a book that will stand the test of time and will surely be a favourite read for all generations.

This book tells the story using both English and Spanish text, with key words highlighted in both languages to assist teaching young readers a basic vocabulary in a second language.”

My Thoughts on the Book:

Happy’s Christmas Gift is a beautifully written and illustrated story of an adorable and brave Yorkie who goes on an adventure to the North Pole when he accidentally ends up in a bag full of letters to Santa.  This delightful story is sure to be a Christmas classic in your home.  The pictures are beautiful, bright, and cheerful which engages children as much as the captivating story does.  I especially love how in the English/Spanish book each page has the story in both languages including several key words in bold writing so children can learn the word in each language.  My children loved this book and have asked me to read it with them several times.  It’s adorable.  We are all really looking forward to the next book that is coming out in the Happy Series- Happy As A Fox!

English Idioms and Expressions For Everyone, Yes, Even You! A Book Review

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Have you ever taken the time to stop and think about what some common expressions in the English language mean?  If English is your first language you might not even think twice when someone tells you to “Keep your shirt on” when you are in a hurry or “I just got a pink slip” when they get fired.  You would know what they meant.  But if English isn’t your second language, or even if it is, often it can get confusing.  In Reza Mashayekhi’s book, English Idioms and Expressions For Everyone, Yes, Even You, he explores many of the idioms and expressions in the English language.  His book has easy to understand meanings of more than 2,000 commonly used English idioms, expressions, and phrases.  He also includes the origins of some of these expressions, examples and expressions in sentences, and also some interesting expressions from other cultures.

It was amazing for me to realize while reading over Mashayekhi’s book just how many expressions I use all the time that I never really thought about before.  It almost reminds me of the Amelia Bedela books where she takes everything literally.  This book is a great tool for anyone learning English as a second language but is also important to help those of us who have been speaking it all our lives to remember to phrase things differently when speaking to others who might not understand.

I really found this book interesting but what really touched me the most was a story that Mashayekhi tells of a foreign exchange student who was tragically shot to death when he walked on someone’s property.  The armed homeowner yelled, “Freeze!” but the student understand what the homeowner meant and was shot to death.  This is  an extreme example of how expressions can be confusing but this book did open my eyes.  I am also looking forward to sharing this book with my children to help explain expressions to them.

Examples from the book:

Ace in the hole
Origin: Gambling

Big secret help. A winning factor kept hidden.

She is our ace in the hole. With her at our side, I’m sure we’re going to win this thing. But keep it to yourself for now.  The prosecutor had an ace in the hole: an eyewitness!

Background:
This may have its origin in the game of poker where you have an ace with the face down, until it’s time to show it.

Burning the candle at both ends

Working too hard.
Overextending oneself.
Doing too many things at once.

Dead presidents

Cash.
Monetary bills.
Dollar bills, paper money, in general, because they mostly have portraits of the late U.S. presidents on them.

A “Hot one” is a $1 bill.
An “Abe” is a $5 bill.
A “Jackson” is a $20 bill.
A “Grant” is a $50 bill.
A “Benjamin” or a “C-note” is a $100 bill.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Reza Mashayekhi was born and reared in Tehran, Iran. He later attended the University of Michigan, where he received a degree in aerospace engineering.

Reza has always been interested in learning the intricacies of the English language. This is why, alongside of his engineering work, he has taught English to non-English speakers. He has done this because he has wanted to expand his knowledge of English, and he has a good explanation for his reasoning.

“When you want to learn a subject, you approach it from your own perspective,” he says. “Once you feel that you know enough about it, you typically move on to something else. When you teach a subject, however, you have to learn everything about it before you can satisfactorily answer all of the questions that are raised by the students.”

Reza also consults with non-English speakers to prepare them for their public speaking events, or to help with their day-to-day conversational skills, both in the form of workshops and on a one-on-one basis.

Being a non-native speaker of English, living and working in the U.S., Reza’s experience through the years and his interactions with his students and clients has led to the compilation of this book.

Fun In The Dark- A Glow Crazy Review and Giveaway

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Have you ever doodled with light?

As a mom I am always looking for fun things for my daughters.  My daughters and I recently saw a commercial for Glow Crazy and it looked like fun so I contacted them.  They were nice enough to send me one Glow Crazy Distance Doodler and one Glow Crazy Glow To Go to try out.

With Glow Crazy you doodle with light.  To use the Glow Crazy you need a completely dark room.  The Glow Crazy Distance Doodler comes with 4 Glow Clings to draw on.  These Glow Clings easily stick onto your walls but can be removed easily and put somewhere else with no damage.  Turn off the lights, press the large button on the top of the Dual-Action Glow Wand, and direct it towards the Glow Clings.  You can draw on the Glow Clings from as far away as 10 feet.  My kids and I had a lot of fun writing notes to each other in the dark.  We were also able to use the stencils that came with the Glow Crazy Distance Doodler to make shapes on the wall, too.  When we wanted to erase our creations we were able to either wait until they slowly disappeared or used the wider beam feature to erase our drawings.  It was a lot of fun drawing in the dark.  And as a mom I like that there is no mess.  It’s great that it comes with 4 Glow Clings to cover a larger area.  I just wish it came with 2 wands.

The Glow Crazy Glow to Go works the same way that the Glow Crazy Distance Doodler only it is compact and can be taken with you.  I like that the Light Wand is attached by a cord so children can’t loose it (thus rendering the toy useless).  And I also like that there is a zippered storage compartment in the middle to store the stencils.  My kids can’t wait to try the Glow Crazy Glow on the Go in the car the next time we are out at night.

Glow Crazy also makes a Doodle Dome which is a tent that you can use day or night.  You sit inside it with the flap closed to keep light out.  Then you doodle on the walls of the tent with the Glow Crazy Wand.  I think my girls would LOVE this.  They love tents and they love doodling.  What would be better?

•       GlowCrazy is great for car trips, sleepovers, anywhere in the dark and at nighttime!
•       The way our glow in the dark technology works from across a room is magical and bound to arouse curiosity in fertile minds.
•       Our fun science characters (Captain Crazy and the Glow Patrol) make learning about science more kid friendly, and our team of educators is producing features that will be helpful in explaining the mysteries of the physical world to our future world leaders.
•       The success of these activities inspires curiosity in young minds and helps fuel an unquenchable thirst for learning.
•       Kids are looking for the hottest new toys to get their hands on this summer and we know that Glow Crazy is the next big thing!

It was very hard to take a picture in the dark but here is a butterfly I made with the stencil. 🙂

Glow Crazy is having a special right now.  On October 22 and 23rd, 2011 only, you can get a Free Glow Glove with purchase of a Distance Doodler from Walmart , Toys ”R” Us or your local retailer!

Simply send your receipt, UPC from the box and the shipping form below to Glow Crazy, 150 Elm Street, East Aurora, NY 14052 and they’ll send you the incredible Glow Glove absolutely free!!

Diamond Candles Review and Giveaway

I must confess.  I have a new obsession.  I LOVE Diamond Candles!  What are Diamond Candles you ask?  Diamond Candles are soy candles that have a surprise inside.  Each Diamond Candle has a ring inside the candle jar.  The only way to get the ring out is to burn the wonderfully scented candle.  I chose Harvest Blend and it smells wonderful.  It’s strong enough to make my entire house smell wonderful but not too overpowering.  It smells like a wonderful combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, apples, and oranges.  YUMMY!

See the ring wrapped in gold foil towards the top?

It’s hard to have patience to let the candle burn down low enough to get the ring out.  Some people, ahem, ok *I* didn’t have much patience so after about 30 minutes of burning the candle I blew it out and used a knife to get my ring out.  But I was lucky because my ring was near the top.  I would have had to be more patient if it was down near the bottom.

Ring in plastic baggie

Anyway, back to the rings.  Each ring in a Diamond Candle is valued at anywhere from $10 to $5,000.  Yes, $5,000!!!  That’s part of the excitement of Diamond Candles.  You don’t know what ring you will get and if it will be one that is real sterling silver or gold and real gemstones and diamonds.  On of my readers showed me a picture of a ring that she got from Diamond Candles that was made of aquamarines and diamonds and worth I believe she said $1,200!!!  How cool is that?

Here is my beautiful ring!  It wasn’t a real diamond but I love it anyway!

Zaycon Foods 40 Pounds of Chicken Breast Product Review!!!! Giveaway Coming Soon!!!

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

I wanted to do a video instead of a regular review.  I had been planning on putting all the chicken in my refrigerator the night I got it and prepping it the next day but the box was too large and the only way to really get all the chicken into the refrigerator was to prep it right then and there.  I was not “camera ready” so I just had my hubby take pics for me.  Please excuse the lighting and blurriness.  I didn’t see the pictures until after I was finished because my hands were covered in chicken. 😉

And now the post that many of you have been waiting for!  I know I piqued your interest last week when I talked about 40 pounds of chicken breast, didn’t I?  I was recently introduced to a company called Zaycon Foods.  Zaycon Foods isn’t a store you can go to.  Instead they have “events” all over the country where you can preorder several different food items including what I received, 40 pounds of chicken breasts.  They also have events for other fresh meats including pork, beef, turkey, and fish as well as well as other fresh products.

The chicken breasts from Zaycon Foods are 100% natural with no hormones or preservatives.  They come farm fresh, not frozen, in one cardboard box with 4 plastic bags of  boneless, skinless chicken breasts inside.  I have never seen such HUGE, beautiful chicken breasts before.  They really put all other chicken breasts to shame.  And because they sell it in larger quantities they can offer it at an amazing price.  At the time when I received mine, it was $1.49 per pound.

40 Pound Box of Zaycon Foods Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts

Open Box of Zaycon Foods Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts

About 10 Pound of Pre-Prepped Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts

(Note how there is not much skin, fat, etc. that needs to be trimmed)

There is some prep work involved once you bring your box home.  Each piece comes as a boneless, skinless butterflied breast which means it’s really 2 breast pieces the way they are naturally connected on a chicken.  All you have to do when you get your chicken home is to use a sharp knife to separate the 2 breasts and clean them up a bit.  I don’t like messing with raw chicken usually, but it wasn’t bad.

One Whole Chicken Breast

Note: It’s almost as big as my cutting board!

Chicken Breast Cut in Half

Note: I still cut these horizontally when I cooked them because they were so thick.  These 2 breasts fed my family of 4 and we were STUFFED!

About 10 Pounds of Prepped Chicken Breasts

Once my chicken was separated into individual breasts, I portioned it into different Ziploc baggies to store it in my refrigerator and freezer.   I cut some up in dices, some in strips, some in tenders, and some I left whole.  Now when I want to make chicken, I can just reach in my freezer and take out a portion.

40 Pounds of Chicken Breasts Bagged and Ready To Be Frozen

Note: Those are Three 2 1/2 Gallon bags that each have 3-4 Gallon Bags of Chicken Inside Plus a Bunch of Smaller Bags With Diced Chicken, Chicken Strips, and Chicken Tenders.

The chicken is the most delicious chicken I’ve ever had.  It tastes so fresh.  I was amazed at the size of each breast.  When I grilled my first batch of chicken breasts I ended up having to cut each one in half horizontally because they are so thick.  Each eating one half of a breast (cut horizontally) was enough for a meal for myself and even my husband.

Ordering from Zaycon Foods was easy.  I signed up for a FREE account, found an event in my area, and ordered a box of chicken.  I was not able to pick it up so I sent my husband.  He said he just had to show his receipt and he didn’t even have to get out of his car.  They loaded the box of chicken right in the car for him!

Zaycon Food’s customers choose the locations that they have their events.  If there is a city that gives a sufficient interest, they will be happy to consider scheduling an event in the area.  Check out their website to see if they have any upcoming events in your area and if they don’t, e-mail them to request an event.  I can’t wait until they come back to my area with beef!!!
