I don’t know about you, but I have always been obsessed with a rustic home aesthetic. I love the feel of an old homestead, with a timeless, organic kitchen. Last year, I decided it was time to incorporate the design into my own home. The style is all about natural, raw materials. I’m talking about wooden beams and exposed brickwork. I’m happy to say that I’m finally happy with my rustic style home, and I’m here to tell you the secrets!
Below are all the ways I used natural, reclaimed timber to give my home that classic homestead feel. The whole process made my house feel new again. You can do the same too! One of the things I learnt on this little journey is that it’s easier than you think. Without further ado, let me show you how I did it.
Wooden floors
I’ve wanted wooden floors for as long as I can remember. Luckily, there were wooden planks hiding beneath my kitchen carpet. Some older houses actually have wooden floors, but they were covered over. I don’t know why anyone would make that decision, but I quickly pulled the carpets up to reveal the wood below. All it took was two or three rounds of varnish and polish to bring them to life. Check under your carpets to see if there’s anything hiding! If not, you’ll need to lay your own timber or have it installed.
Exposed beams
Unfortunately, it’s only the old, traditional homesteads and quaint English cottages that have exposed beams. So, I had to get creative! I ordered in lots of natural, reclaimed timber, and had it cut to size. Next, I had it installed in my kitchen and living room. It wasn’t easy, but the result is stunning. The wood itself is easy to get hold off, and cheap to buy. It’s the installation part that’s tricky. Wood is heavy, and putting it in place is best left to the experts.
Exterior decking
The contrast between green grass and wooden timber is a timeless aesthetic. It looks so perfect out in the garden. Again, I called in the experts to build my exterior decking, but it’s easy enough for an experienced DIYer. You just need some fire resistant lumber, and a free weekend to install it. Most of the timber comes cut to size, and it’s just a case of putting it all together. Now, I have a cosy corner outside to relax in. I’m just trying to squeeze in the last few warm nights before winter sets in!
Furniture
Last of all, I filled the house with traditional wooden furniture. I picked up a lot of furniture from flea markets and vintage stores. The older pieces have so much more character and history. I also had one or two bespoke pieces made by our local carpenter. He made a giant, chunky kitchen table for us, which takes pride of place in the home! Again, you can get creative here, and choose your favourite pieces for the house.
