British cuisine takes a bit of a bashing sometimes. Former French president Jacques Chirac had a go at British cooking way back in 2005. It’s best to ignore Mr. Chirac. British food can be nourishing and delicious. London has a growing gastronomic reputation that rivals even Paris. (Take that, Chirac!) Brits have long loved dining on foreign food. We can’t move for Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants in the UK. That means we sometimes neglect our own culinary masterpieces. With that in mind, here are some great British meals for you to try as soon as possible.

Sunday dinner

It’s for good reason that much of Europe calls the Brits “rosbifs.” A roast beef dinner on Sundays is part of the British culture. Sitting down with the whole family around an enormous dinner table is one of the great joys of British life. The beef is the key component of any Sunday dinner. You must be thorough when cooking it, so it’s tender and full of flavour. After that, you’ve just got all the trimmings. Roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and gravy are all fantastic. Everyone does their Sunday dinner in their own special way. Make it your own.

Toad in the hole

The name may be peculiar, but don’t let that put you off.  Toad in the hole is classic British comfort food. It consists of sausages mixed in with homemade batter. The sausages should be succulent and meaty – pork is the best. The batter must be crisp around the edges, but fluffy too. It’s tricky to get right, so you’d be better off buying some to try before attempting it yourself. It’s a wonderful addition to any family dinner table.

Balti

Balti is a variety of curry served in a thin bowl, known as a “balti bowl.” You may not think of curry when you think of British cuisine. Au contraire – Balti first originated in the UK, gaining popularity in Birmingham. That’s a classic example of the British cultural tradition. The UK adapts to other cultures better than any other nation. That adaptability is part of what makes Britain great. Balti is variable. It’s another dish that you can make your own. Some say it’s impossible to get a true Balti outside of the West Midlands. Don’t listen to them – give it a try.

Victoria sponge

Fancy some dessert? Named after Queen Victoria, the Victoria sponge cake is another British classic. It’s a simple recipe, but that doesn’t make it any less tasty. Just whip up a soft sponge mixture and stick a layer of cream and jam in the middle. It’s a good recipe to try with new bakers or young children. You can also have fun with the topping. A dusting of sugar is traditional, but you can alter it if you like. You may add fruit or icing, perhaps, to make it special.

Have I got your stomach rumbling yet? I hope so. British food is simple and delicious. Anyone can have a go at cooking British. That’s the beauty of it. Have fun in the kitchen, and you’ll soon be serving up a whole range of tasty British treats.

When I am not on the computer I am normally cooking or baking since it is my favorite thing to do.  I love to try out new recipes, but my issue lately is that I am either lugging my 18 inch laptop into the kitchen or my phone so I can try follow the steps for the recipe and simply it becomes a pain.  So I had been thinking of getting a tablet just to use in the kitchen but nothing had been what I wanted till Key Ingredient Recipe Reader emailed me.  I checked out out and right away I knew this is what I had been looking for.  So I said yes to doing a review of the product and  as soon as they told me it has shipped I signed up for Key Ingredient and even got the app for my phone.  So before the reader even got to my house I had over 40 new recipes added and I was excited.  After charging the Recipe Reader I simple turned on and logged into my account and with the wifi built in it synced my accounts together so I had all  my recipes on my Recipe Reader.  I loved the key ingredient website because it has tons of recipes to pick from and I could make cookbook folders for each section I liked, example crockpot, chicken, breakfast and more.   Each folder you make will list the recipes in alphabetic order so you can easily find if you know the name of the recipe you are looking for.  If you are planning a holiday meal this year and you find recipes you only want for the meal you can dd them to your planner, so you can easily find them when it time to cook for that meal.   The Key Ingredient has 3 timers so you can be cooking and baking many meals at once and keep up with each one.   The back has a stand so that is up some so it is easier to view, you can use laying flat or standing up it will rotate for you.

A few other great things you will love about the Key Ingredient is that it comes with a conversion calculator and a ingredient substitute which honestly makes life so much easier.  Since I hate when I don’t have something then I have to turn on my computer and then find what I can use but then I get distracted from my computer.   Also this would be a great gift for an older person who is not tech savvy since it is simple to use.  You can also have the font sized changed so you can see without straining.  Oh and don’t worry if you spill something on it all you have to do is wipe off it is sealed glass.

So my personal thoughts-

I am in love, I would buy this for anyone who loves to cook.  It makes my life simple and easy.  I don’t have to drag my laptop, cookbook or more into my small kitchen.  I just use the Key Ingredient website or app on my phone once a week find some recipes I like and add them to my planner so I write out my meal plan for the week they are right in front of me.   I love that I can use either standing up or laying down and be able to view it without any problem.   So now I know what I am getting some family members for Christmas now that I tried this out.  If you want to buy a Key Ingredient Recipe Reader they are $149 with free shipping.

 Win it!
