gratitude and positive change

I usually make New Year’s Resolutions but this year I got my whole family involved.  I gave everyone a piece of paper and a pencil.  We talked about what a resolution was with our girls and we each wrote 5 resolutions.  But we didn’t stop there.  I wanted to start 2014 with positivity and happiness so next I had everyone write 5 things that make them happy.  I’ve noticed that my girls haven’t been as appreciative of the things they have lately so I also had us all write 5 things we are grateful for.  When we were finished with all 3 lists we took turns sharing our lists.  This not only gave our girls the opportunity to hear our ideas but also share their own and learn from each other.

After we shared our lists, we reflected on the fun things we did together in 2013.  We each shared a few of our favorite things.  Talking about our favorite things we did together made me realize that we really need to do more fun family things in 2014 so we then made a list of places we’d all like to go to and all the things we’d like to do together in 2014.

It was really wonderful to share together as a family.  I am so proud of my girls and the lists they created.  Their resolutions included donating to charity and doing community service.  They were grateful for family, having a home, food, and clothes and my older daughter said she was grateful for indoor plumbing.  It wasn’t on my list but I have to agree with her.  Hubby said he is grateful for internet and while I forgot that on my list, I agree with him on that one, too!  It was nice to reflect on the little things that make us all happy and fun to plan what things we’d like to do together in 2014.

It’s not too late to get your family together and come up with your own lists.  Let me know if you do this with your family, too!
