Marvel Studios to donate up to $1 million in recognition of new charitable initiative!
Benedict Cumberbatch, star of Marvel Studios’ upcoming film DOCTOR STRANGE, announced the launch of Marvel Studios: Hero Acts, a new charitable initiative focused on bringing help and hope to kids around the world.
Learn how you can help:

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (October 5, 2016) – Today in a special video message, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, star of Marvel Studios’ upcoming film “Doctor Strange,” announced the launch of Marvel Studios: Hero Acts, a new charitable initiative focused on bringing help and hope to kids around the world.

Marvel Studios launched the first Hero Acts campaign, and from now until the end of the year, Marvel Studios will donate five dollars ($5) to Save the Children, up to U.S. one million dollars, for every fan who uploads a photo of themselves in their favorite Marvel hero pose. Marvel Studios is collaborating with Fotition, a new social change platform, to power the experience on a brand-new website MarvelStudiosHeroActs.com. Fans will be able to visit the site to upload their photo and choose from a selection of custom Marvel-themed overlays. They will then be able to post their photo directly to the Hero Acts gallery and to their other social channels using the hashtags #marvelstudios #heroacts.

“After the experience of filming portions of ‘Doctor Strange’ in Nepal, our team was inspired to give back to the kids there and wanted to establish a larger ongoing program in support of children facing extraordinary circumstances,” said Kevin Feige, Producer & President, Marvel Studios. “For our first Marvel Studios: Hero Acts effort, we’re thrilled to team up with Save the Children, an organization with decades of experience improving the lives of children around the world.”

With fan participation, the donations made through Hero Acts can help Save the Children provide much-needed learning materials for as many as 123,000 kids in Nepal, Haiti, and the United States. Together, Marvel Studios and its fans can help put these children on a path where they can learn, thrive, and strive toward a better future.

“Save the Children is extremely grateful to be the first nonprofit organization to be part of Marvel Studios: Hero Acts,” said Carolyn Miles, President & CEO of Save the Children. “Even though more children are enrolled in primary school worldwide than ever before, many are struggling to learn and to get a quality education. That is why this collaboration is so valuable. The funds raised through Hero Acts will provide much-needed learning materials in communities where there are few resources, and will boost children’s basic skills to help them succeed in school and in life. The actions taken by Marvel fans will make a meaningful difference for children.”

Whether visiting children in hospitals, granting wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses, or inspiring kids and families through our content, Marvel Studios: Hero Acts builds on the tradition of lending a hand to children in times of need. From our filmmakers to our fans, we believe we each have our own superpower to lend to the world, and Marvel Studios is dedicated to bringing that out in everyone.

Captain America: Civil War is finally here in theaters! When I was in LA last month for the Captain America Event I had the opportunity to screen the film and I LOVED every minute of it. So much so that I went again last night to the first possible showing in my local theater. It was THAT good but I’ll get to that in a minute. Make sure to check out my interview posts with Chris Evans, Emily VanCamp, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen and Directors Anthony & Joe Russo to learn a little more behind the scenes exclusive details.

Keep your butt in your seat until the lights come on!!!!!

image001 (1)Before I even get into my review I wanted to make sure you see my important tip. This is a Marvel movie and as such, there are BONUS SCENES in the middle AND the end of the credits. These are usually sneak peek scenes that give you some insight into where the story will go in the next movie and more. I was shocked that last night when I saw the movie so many people got up as soon as the credits started. And then most of the ones that stayed for the first bonus scene got up and left before the second one. People, butt in your seat until the lights come on!!!!! 😉

Heroes or Vigilantes?

We know from many of the other Marvel movies that while the Avengers do a great deal of protecting people, there have often been lots of destruction and civilian injuries and deaths. The story of Captain America: Civil War centers around the world wanting the Avengers to sign the Sokovia Accords which would basically reign them in and force them to answer to a special UN panel.

THE TEAMS:

On one hand you have #TeamCap supported by Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Falcon/Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), and Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). They believe that they should be able to make their own choices when it comes to using their powers, defeating evil, and protecting the world.

And on the other side #TeamIronMan lead by Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Panther/T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Vision (Paul Bettany), Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), and War Machine/James Rhodey (Don Cheadle) who think that the Avengers should be supervised to protect innocent lives.

I stand off firmly on #TeamIronMan but I feel for #TeamCap and understand where they are coming from, too. There isn’t a clear Right vs. Wrong here. You’ll probably relate to both sides and that’s exactly what the directors wanted to happen.

“The intent with the film was to hopefully when you’re done watching the movie you leave the theater and you argue with your family and friends about  it. We didn’t want to make a declarative statement one way or the other. We just want to represent both as accurately and emotionally as we could.”

ACTION:

There are incredible action scenes in the movie. Ones where you will be on the edge of your seat, holding your breath, and forgetting where you are. I HIGHLY suggest seeing it in 3D because it brings you even more into the action. I saw it both ways and while it’s AMAZING no matter what form you see it in, 3D is on another level.

Here’s a little peek at another action scene in the movie:

SPIDER-MAN

There is an EPIC airport scene with all 12 of the Super Heroes including newcomer Tom Holland as Spider-Man. He was everything you would want Spider-Man to be- boyish, quirky, strong, and funny. He provided great comic relief during especially intense scenes. I look forward to seeing Spider-Man again as he really was one of my favorite parts of this movie.

STRONG WOMEN- Great Movie For Fan Girls, too!

I have to say that my favorite scenes involve the ladies (Scarlett Johansson (“Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow”), Emily VanCamp (“Sharon Carter / Agent 13”), and Elizabeth Olsen (“Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch”) who really kick some butt in this movie. I love that this isn’t a guys only movie. It is totally a movie for FanGirls, too, and the strong female characters kick butt and empower women and young girls. And they look pretty amazing doing it. Don’t tell my husband but I think I have a little girl crush on Black Widow. 😉

FRIENDSHIP AND ROMANCE

No matter what side they are on, ultimately there are underlying friendships and deep love and respect for each other. They are a family but even families disagree and fight at times. Not only does this movie explore the characters on a deeper level but some of the characters’ relationships start forming on a deeper level, too. I don’t want to give any spoilers but there’s a kiss between two characters as well as the start of a definite emotional connection between two others. See, this movie has it all!

CHRIS EVANS aka CAPTAIN AMERICA (and his biceps)

Do I even need to say more? Chris Evans told us he actually hurt his arm a little shooting this scene. I’m sure I’m not the only woman who would kiss his boo boo and make it better, right ladies?

ROBERT DOWNEY JR. aka IRON MAN

Seriously SWOONING over here for me. I’ve been a fan of Robert Downery Jr. since back in the 80’s. Yes, I’m that old. And there is a scene that will bring you right back to his younger days. But like a fine wine, I think Robert has gotten even more handsome with age. I saw him close up at the Captain America: Civil War red carpet premiere when he walked right by us.

So which side are you on?

You’ve probably already read the posts where we interviewed Chris Evans, Emily VanCamp, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen during the Captain America Event, but we also had the honor and privilege of interviewing Captain America: Civil War Directors brothers Anthony & Joe Russo. It was such an amazing feeling being in a room just feet away from serious greatness!

Was there any rivalry between you guys writing the script and thinking out the process of the movie between Captain and Ironman?

ANTHONY   :    No, I don’t think there was rivalry just because we both love both characters. Our process has always been, we like very layered storytelling so we often times when we’re breaking the story or prepping a movie we’ll sort of step through the story from different characters points of view. We’ll take a pass where it’ll just be all about this character. And then we’ll take a pass where it’ll be all about that character. We work with ensembles a lot in our work. And so it’s become part of our process to really have moments where the whole movie belongs to somebody else, just one particular character for a moment as we’re thinking about the film from beginning to end. So, I think that’s the process we went through on this movie as well with the writers, Markus and McFeely and the producer, Nate Moore from Marvel and Kevin Feige. They’re both very near and dear to our hearts. We love them both. The other thing I think about Joe and I is that we love characters who are exciting and fun and cool at all that but also are very human and vulnerable. We always look for that side of the character. So for us it was very important to find where Steve Rogers is vulnerable. Where is Tony Stark vulnerable? And sort of play to those in this movie in a way that would put them in conflict with one another.

Spider-Man in the movie, where did you find him and are you going to hold onto that kid?

JOE  :    Oh my G-d. Doing everything we can to hang onto him.

ANTHONY   :    Yeah. We’re more in love with him than anybody.

JOE  :    There was a really exhaustive audition process for that role. And you know we saw him for the first time in our office in Atlanta, it was Anthony and I. We were doing work sessions with all the actors. And he came in and Spider-Man was a very important character to me as a kid. I was a big comic book collector. I still have my collection in my closet to my wife’s dismay. And you know, that character was my favorite character growing up. So to be able to interpret him on screen was like a dream come true. The things that I loved about him as a character when I was a kid were his vulnerability, his insecurity, his sense of humor. But I loved that his sense of humor in the books was a very self-aware you know. He was a smart ass kid but he was a kid. And we felt that our interpretation of the character, we wanted to have an actor very close in age to Peter Parker. And Tom’s a young actor. And we also wanted to make sure that the actor had both the vulnerability and a confidence at the same time. It made him accessible. But also would allow him to stand in contrast to all these other really experienced superheroes who are running around dealing with a very adult problem. And then you insert into that a kid who’s trying to improvise his way through the situation but doesn’t really understand the stakes and couldn’t understand the stakes because he’s a kid. And Tom Holland just embodied all of that. He brought a real authenticity. That was the other thing too is that we really wanted him to feel like he was of New York today, right now and not about comic book New York. He was a kid living in Queens who had a certain energy to him and a certain feeling that you get or that the shift in your personality that happens when you do live in New York City. You know so that was everything we were looking for and the kid just embodied it so well and amazing in the film.

What was the hardest scene to shoot?

ANTHONY   :    Oh, that’s a good question. It’s hard.

JOE  :    Very important question.

ANTHONY   :    There’s different things that you know it depends on what you’re focusing on at any given moment. I mean, look, these actors are also good, right? They’re easy to direct, they’re amazing actors. So like getting the emotional stuff like the performance stuff out of them is easy. The execution of action though is very, very hard. And we are action fetishists we always say. So we love action. And we use action very specifically to find ways to express character and express narrative through action. So, that airport scene was about the biggest thing we’ve ever attempted to do. It was the biggest thing. It was almost like a mini movie within the movie. It took months and months and months to prepare that sequence. It took us an extremely long time to execute that sequence. And that sequence was built in many different ways. There’s some practical shooting we did at a location in Germany called Leipzig at an actual airport there. We had to build a huge what they call a back lot outside our studio in Atlanta where we just put down an enormous slab of concrete, surrounded it with green screen. Some of those characters are really physically there and are highly trained to do very difficult stunts with the stunt team as well. And then some of those characters are entirely CG. So they’re interacting in the fight.

JOE  :    Plus it was 110° in Atlanta. We would take the temperature of the asphalt we were standing on and it was close to 125. Yeah, guys like Chris Evans and Chadwick Boseman in full costumes standing out there. Poor Paul Bettany, I remember one day where he was hanging on wires out there in full Vision outfit. And he moved his arm in a way that like the, his sleeve opened up and sweat just squirt.

ANTHONY   :    They’re just dissolving in front of your eyes.

JOE  :    So certainly uncomfortable circumstances but yeah, they’re very difficult sequences to shoot.

And what was the most bad ass scene to shoot?

ANTHONY   :    The Romania sequence was really thrilling to be in that tunnel. You know, we love cars, we love vehicle chases, car chases. Also we love fighting. We like hand-to-hand fighting which is what we really what we focused on in the Winter Soldier with Captain America. So to bring him forward and have a fight with him and Bucky Barnes fighting their way out of the apartment through the stairwell, that was another thing that’s very bad ass for us.

JOE  :    Natasha’s fights.

ANTHONY   :    Yeah. Natasha’s amazing. I mean Scarlett is an amazing, amazing actor. And there’s a wonderful stunt woman that works with her and that’s called Heidi Moneymaker and she’s just an amazing fighter.

JOE  :    She really embodies that character and allows us to do some of those really bad ass Natasha sequences.

With your last film, you guys had wanted to do more like a 70s spy thriller. Was that your vision? What was your vision going into this one?

ANTHONY   :    You can’t do a movie called Captain America without sort of having political, thinking about the politics of it. It’s at the center of the character, who the character is from inception and obviously in his name. So while there is still elements of the political thriller that carries us forward and kind of maybe even launches us into this movie, we always thought about this movie as a psychological thriller. And that shift was very important to us because you know the heart of this movie for us is the relationship and the conflict between Captain America, Bucky Barnes, and Tony Stark. It’s what has to play out between those three characters in the climax of the film that we are driving towards as storytellers for the whole movie. We are setting up that sort of awful reveal and that awful tension that plays out between those characters in that moment. So that’s why we always thought of it as a psychological thriller in terms of what happens to these characters on a psychological and emotional level when this horrible revelation comes through at the end of the film. We were thinking about movies in that vain.

One of the movies we talked about a lot was David Fincher’s Seven. We talked about Brian de Palma’s Blowout a lot. These are movies that have had this similar trajectory where the characters are on this sort of road to something very awful. And what is going to happen to them when they get there? How are they going to react as characters? How are they going to weather it as characters? So that was the heart of the film for us this time around.

When you guys are taking stories that are from the comic books and there are so many fans that are loyal to these comic books, how are you able to translate part of that story in keeping with the comic books and then deciding to kind of go away from that? What’s involved with deciding what you’re doing with that?

JOE  :    Well, as comic book fans ourselves and I was a huge comic book fan, I’m the first guy to line up to see the midnight showing of a movie I’m excited about. And I’ll drag my son out with me and sit there till 2:30 in the morning and watch the film just because I want to have that immediate response to the movie the same way that everybody does want to be part of the cultural conversation about that movie. As a diehard comic book fan I’m not interested in seeing a straight interpretation of a comic book. I already know the story. So why would I go see the movie? The Marvel cinematic universe is also building its characters in a very specific way that is very different than a comic books. Film is a very different medium then comic books. We have two hours, 2 ½ hours to tell a story in. And we can only put out one of those movies once a year, every two years to move these characters forward. So we have to make choices that are servicing the storytelling that is built up in the Marvel cinematic universe. And so Civil War in the Marvel cinematic universe is very different than Civil War in the comic books. We don’t have the same characters, we don’t have the same storytelling. So for us, we borrowed the concept and applied it to our characters. But we also needed what we felt was a very emotional reason that would drive the story on both sides because again we were really committed to making sure that when we got to the end we had a very difficult time deciding who was right.

And I saved the best question for last since it’s something everyone wants to know…….

The love story between Captain and 13, are you looking forward to furthering that and sharing more of that with the audience?

JOE  :    Yeah. We’re, we’re sitting down and the Infinity War movie might be the next time that you see a lot of these characters on screen. So everything’s in the conversation. Where do these characters go? Where do we want them to be? The interesting thing about Civil War for us is and the fact that we knew we were going to be doing the infinity war films as we were, there’s really a connection between the Winter Soldier, Civil War and the Infinity War movies. It’s an arch and that arch is of this family. And this movie is a downbeat in this family’s existence in the Avengers. And what we thought would be most interesting heading into infinity war would be putting these characters in the most complicated position they could possibly be in to face the greatest threat that they’re ever going to face. Can they pull together? Can they forgive each other? Will they forgive each other? Should they forgive each other? Can they ever work together again? And so I think you’ll see some fracturing as we move forward this Civil War isn’t over. And it’s certainly going to carry forward. In the fracturing you will see characters you know, camps of characters dealing with each other and moving forward. And certainly will be Captain and Agent 13 will be part of that.

Last month when I was in Los Angeles for the Captain America: Civil War premiere I had the opportunity to interview Emily VanCamp with 24 other bloggers. She was all smiles when she walked into the room filled with women and her happiness was infectious. She was so beautiful in person and absolutely sweet as can be. Here’s what we learned….

How do you feel knowing she’s going down in history as Agent 13?

It’s really cool. Being a part of this universe is really a special thing especially with the movies that they’re making and how good they are. I’m really happy to do it with the people I’m doing it with because everyone’s great and super talented. These movies could have been very sort of surface level but what I love about Marvel is how they delve into the characters. They sort of give us the freedom as well to create a version of the character that hopefully the fans will like and it’s a really fun process. So the fact that people love the movies is like an extra bonus.

Curious what Superhero Emily looked up to as a child? This is what she had to say:

I was trying to think of like a superhero that I looked up to and I was obsessed with the Ninja Turtles, I’m not gonna lie. I was one like four years in a row for Halloween and I was trying to figure out do they count as superheroes. I don’t know but that was my thing. They inspired some of these characters I really like to play.

Not April?

I wanted to be the Ninja Turtle. I think I was like Donatello one year and then like Michelangelo like three years because I love pizza, I don’t know.

What of you went into the character?

What I love about Sharon is her moral compass. I think she has a really strong moral compass and I think that’s what her and Steven initially sort of identify with each other and ultimately in the comic books it led to a very complicated relationship but there’s gotta be something that brings them together as well as their love of Peggy. I think there’s an initial trust there that maybe he doesn’t have with anyone else and maybe she doesn’t have with anyone else. So I really enjoyed that but in terms of what I identify with I love a girl with a strong moral compass and a lot of integrity. I think she really has that and I think you see her struggle with that within this film because she’s battling her work and her loyalty to her work. Cap rebels against that and it’s like is she gonna follow her head and her heart. Ultimately see what she does but I think people can relate to that struggle.

Emily kicked some serious butt in Captain America: Civil War so we asked her to tell us a little about her training and this is what she told us:

It’s just a lot of working out really. I mean I had already sort of done some training for Revenge so it was like an easier segue into the films but you wanna go into these movies feeling really strong and feeling fit. I wanna be able to keep up really. We were wrapping Revenge while I started training for the movie which is very interesting and I kind of realized how much I should have done that for Revenge. I mean I was fit doing Revenge but I was like this is another level. I’m just not really good going into it it’s fun. I love that stuff. I was a dancer so all that physical activity’s great and sort of helps with the sequences and stuff because ultimately it’s choreography. I hope to get to do more of it.

Who does Emily think would win on a battle between Emily Thorne (Revenge) and Sharon Carter?

Someone asked me who would win in a battle the other day. And I was really thinking about it because I think Sharon’s incredibly technical and has this very serious real training. It’s not like some sensei that she had in Japan but I think Emily would win because she’s so tortured. She’s just fueled by so much anger so I kind of feel like when she unleashes the rage…I think it would be a really close fight. I think it would be a close fight but Sharon might just be missing a little bit of an edge.

Was there any scene that was particularly difficult for you?

I wouldn’t say difficult. I think in these movies you just don’t want to screw it up.  Everyone’s bringing their A game. It’s very rare that you go into a movie almost already knowing it’s going to be great and successful because historically they’ve been so successful. So you want to bring your A game and you want to show up. I was in Winter’s Soldier but not very much so it was a little intimidating. There’s that nervous factor before you go into it but everyone’s so kind and generous and the Russo Brothers have always made me feel so comfortable. So I wouldn’t say difficult. I just think you just want to do the best job you can.

Agent 13 and Captain America

And then our attention turned to THE KISS:

It’s kind of refreshing to see Captain in a more intimate situation and they have chemistry. It was there even in The Winter’s Soldier I would say so it’s kind of nice to see it finally happen.
Want to know more about THE KISS? Make sure to see Captain America: Civil War this weekend!

agent 13 pop

It was so cute to see Emily looking at her Agent 13 Pop figure. Here’s what she had to say about how it feels to have a pop figure?

I was just noticing this. I never actually saw it out of the box. It’s hilarious. I think she’s pretty cool. It’s awesome. I gotta get one for my mom. That’s really cool.

How does Emily feel about being a role model for girls?

In these movies I think especially in like anything you do I always hate it when I hear actors or musicians or people in the public eye say that they have no obligation to be any sort of role model. It’s not like you have an obligation but you have a choice and why wouldn’t you choose to empower young women and use yourself as a vehicle when you have a voice to, to kind of inspire that. I don’t see why you wouldn’t. That’s not to say I’m always going to play this kind of character. It’s amazing to play a kickass girl like Sharon or a really tortured version of a woman when I played Emily Thorn. I just did a film called The Girl in the Book which is much more sort of rooted in reality and much more real. I also think she in her own way is strong and on her own adventures so it’s just I don’t know I tend to pick characters that have those elements to it. But I guess in terms of being a role model it’s not a responsibility but it’s something that I feel connected to. I have three sisters. I have wonderful women in my life and I just want to see girls have the best opportunities they possibly can and if I can inspire that in the tiniest way I don’t see why I wouldn’t.

Last month while in LA for the Captain America: Civil War event we had the pleasure of interviewing Paul Bettany who plays Vision. He was quite charming and I could have listened to his British accent all day. He sat down and joking around our interview started like this….

“Excellent.  Marvelous.  Thank you very much.  What can I do for you all?  Probably wondering why I brought you all here?”

SUCH A KIDDER! So here are 10 things we learned from Paul Bettany:

1. Can you tell us about the makeup process and the struggles with that?

Yeah, it was hot.  You all come out of your air-conditioned trailers in your costume and makeup and everybody’s looking rather like super heroes and movie stars.  And then 5 minutes later in 105 [degree] Atlanta weather, you look a lot less like a movie star.  Both me and Chadwick have this special suit that goes on underneath.  Which pumps ice cold water through it.  Yes it is nice. If you can imagine, close your eyes and imagine being inside a gin and tonic.  It feels exactly like that.

2. How much of it was like costume and make up?  And how much of it was CGI?

It’s mostly costume and makeup.  And then there’s some sort of circuitry, I don’t know how to describe it.  They’re lines — basically, the makeup starts from under my eyes and goes all the way under the bald cap.  What the CG does is continue the lines and circuitry into my eyes so they weren’t contacts. They stopped short of that.

3. How many hours did it take for you for full costume, full make up to be ready?

Two and a quarter hours initially. It was somewhere between an hour and a half and 2 hours when everybody’s rusty and they’re starting off again.  Then they quickly get it down to about an hour.  Which is frankly amazing for the transformation that they achieve.  And then the costume is about 45 minutes.  So, you really have to plan how you’re hydrating yourself because that’s a 45 minute reset when you [need to take off the costume].

4. How do you personally relate to Vision?

I have to relate to him as a human being, because I am.  And I’ve never met a synthetic person.  Although, in Los Angeles I question whether I have a lot.  It’s funny.  I imagine a child.  A clever child who can do anything almost and is forced into a situation of having to grow up very quickly.  Hasn’t happened to me yet, personally.  But, that’s how I do.

5. We asked Paul if he could put to rest any rumors about playing Bond and he very coyly replied:

It’s an impossible question.  It’s very flattering. Talking about it really dismantles your ability to negotiate.  Were such a negation gonna take place. I don’t known of one.  So, I can’t confirm or deny.

6. You’re a director now yourself.  Is it different being on the other end?

Yeah and I think more actors should do it.  It really gives you much more of a respect for the directors that you work with.  And I really enjoyed my own period of being an actor and just enjoying my responsibility [as an actor] because you’re obviously taking care of a much larger picture as the director. And your day is just filled with a thousand questions.  99% of which are what color do you want the red shoes to be?  What? And then 1% of them being absolutely are one of the questions that are gonna make you old.  It’s been amazing.  And I loved doing it.  And will do it again.  I’ll do a comedy next time.

7. You were the voice of Jarvis and now Tony Stark has a new voice in his head.  Do you feel betrayed that it’s a woman?

That’s a loaded question.  I don’t feel betrayed that it’s a woman at all. I definitely feel melancholic at times.  I don’t go, “oh, where’s my Jarvis?”

8. I read that you hadn’t watched the Iron Man movies in the beginning.  Have you watched them now?

When you work you enter an interview with a journalist where they ask you, have you seen the movies?  And you say, “oh no, I haven’t seen the movies”.  And then you go on to say, but then I don’t really see 80% of the movies that I’m in.  But they don’t use that bit because it’s a much more eye catching headline “Bettany doesn’t watch the Iron Man movies”.  So, no, I did my homework and I watched them all.  And I really loved them.  I think that the stories are becoming more and more rich and complex and I think you see that in this movie.  That both in terms of the interpersonal relationships between all of the super heroes and also broader, often these sorts of movies are just plain escapism. Actually this movie talks about some of the things that we sometimes want to escape from.  You know, like, unilateral intervention from a super power is really what on one level, this film talks about.  And the need for a strong regulatory body.  And that’s pretty topical stuff.  Which is amazing for a movie that’s this broad and this much of a popular movie and this much of a popular franchise. I think to touch on those sort of subjects is kind of great.

9. What was it like being his voice for all those movies and then finally becoming a character?

Well, I just love it.  I mean, it’s a double-edged sword, of course because I used to show up for 45 minutes, talk a bit and they’d give me a big bag of cash.  Now I gotta got to Atlanta and wear spanks.  But no.  It’s been so much fun. I loved doing it and I look forward to it when the date is set for the next one. You meet a bunch of people that you know and it’s like coming back to a family.  It’s lovely.

10. How do your kids feel about having a superhero in the house now?

They love it actually.  My daughter met me as the Vision for the first time and I think she was just three.  Or maybe just even about to turn three.  And she just ran up to me and gave me a hug.  She knew entirely who it was. I was very worried about what her response would be.  Then at the end of the day when I took it all off she had her first ever meltdown.  She said, “I want purple daddy!” Which, as I’m sure you can all imagine was a little depressing.

A few weeks ago when I was in Los Angeles as part of the Captain America Event, 24 other bloggers and I had the opportunity to interview Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) about their roles in the new movie, Captain America: Civil War which will be in theaters May 6th, 2016. On a side note, the movie was AMAZING. I’ll be posting my review soon so keep an eye out for it. I loved it so much I already bought tickets to see it with my family at an early screening on May 5th. I can’t wait!!! So here’s what we learned from Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen.

In the comics, your character is mostly deaf.  How would feel about them introducing that into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

“I keep hearing about that. It isn’t really played out at this point and not unless we say he’s got an amazing hearing aid or something.” -Jeremy Renner

“Or maybe you get into explosion.” -Elizabeth Olsen

“We were focused much more on the alternate sort version of not the big purple mask sort of guy, you know.  He’s more of the utility sort of guy.  So yeah they talked about that, but I don’t think it’s gonna play anytime.” –Jeremy Renner

“Well, I don’t know.  You could always be blown up somewhere and…”-Elizabeth Olsen

“What? What?” –Jeremy Renner (acting like he can’t hear Elizabeth)

hawkeyeYou reprised your role as Hawkeye for this movie.  Did you need to do any extra training for the bow?  Do you bow hunt?

“I don’t. I didn’t do any extra training. Every time there is a different sort of setup with the bow and what’s happening with the tech stuff.  On this one, the quiver’s different.  Sometimes they could snap out and they put a different tip on the bottom.  This one I really do a full extension. It’s the same gear- different tips.”–Jeremy Renner

nullSo there is a lot of action; there’s a lot of humor in the movie.  Did you guys have improv or was that just something they wrote in?

“The Russo brothers were great.  They’d always have alt lines for certain things and these sort of one-liners, and then they just let you kind of run with a bunch of different things. So I have no idea what makes the cut. You still do alt lines. They just want to have options for tone and then pace and that sort of thing.  That was probably the most fun part of the job- improvising- that was fun.”  –Jeremy Renner

Photo Credit- Coralie Seright from Lovebugs and Postcards

Could you guys tell us a little bit about your stunts and how much was you, and how much was, you know, the stuntmen?

“I think we do as many stunts as we can. A lot of times they take a second crew [stunt doubles] out when we’ve already been wrapped from the movie, when they’re in Germany, and they might do stuff then.  But when we’re there, we do everything. I need to get better at wirework, I think, for the next one. And flying.” – Elizabeth Olsen

“It’s almost just practical stuff.  I don’t do the CGI stuff. It happens outside the arrows. I fire an arrow because it’s gotta go somewhere, right?  [LAUGHS] You know, into the cameraman.  [AUDIENCE LAUGHS] But I’ll do ninety-nine percent of the script. This is fun- if I couldn’t, then this would be a boring job. There’s one flip I couldn’t do it, so my stunt double did.”–Jeremy Renner

scarlet witchWhat inspired to do the role of the Scarlet Witch?

“A few things.  I was already a fan of Ironman and Avengers. Then I started reading more about Scarlet Witch’s journey, and I found the fact that her mind is the only thing that limits her and the ever possibility of this kind of insanity and being able to manipulate reality- that it even throws- that she can manipulate her own reality, those kinds of things, to me, really cool. I didn’t know when they would come into play or if they will, and I still hope we play around more with that part of her.  But I just think she’s a really cool character and it’s a lot of opportunity for storytelling.” – Elizabeth Olsen

nullWas ever any real-life tension between the actors?

“No, it’s a lot of laughing. There’s a lot of jokes and a lot of inappropriate humor. Yeah, everyone’s got a good attitude about it when we’re doing. I mean Paul Bettany who is in such an uncomfortable costume and he’s sweating through these prosthetics, and he can’t take them off, and he’s so miserable, and he is still one of the funniest people on set.  I think everyone just has a good attitude.  If we complain, we complain and laugh about it and move on because you can’t complain about it.  It’s a really awesome job.  And I think we all recognize that.”- Elizabeth Olsen

As you have probably already read, I was invited to be a part of the Captain America: Civil War press event in Los Angeles. While I might have chosen to be on Team Iron Man, I was really excited when I found out that we would be interviewing Captain America himself, Chris Evans. I have lots to tell you about this interview but I’d bet I could just show you all the pictures of Chris Evans and no one would mind if there weren’t any words to go with it. But in all seriousness, our interview with Chris began when he surprised us and came into the room while we were still interviewing Paul Bettany aka The Vision and the voice of Jarvis. We could tell instantly that these two men were excited to see each other as filming has been over for months and it’s been a while since they’ve seen each other.

You could feel the adoration between these two cast mates.

Chris and Paul were so funny and were cracking us up. I have to say that Chris is different from his goody two shoes, “vanilla” Captain America persona. He is hysterical and not as uptight as his character. He left us in stitches but that’s all I can say about that. It’s kind of like Vegas. 😉 LOL

Keep an eye out for my interview post on Paul Bettany next week. Meanwhile, this post is about the most patriotic super hero, Captain America aka Chris Evans. I think he was having a little too much fun playing with the toy versions of himself we had on the table. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have a toy version made of yourself.

Are there lots of pranks on set?

“Everyone wants there to be pranks and it’s not so much pranks as it’s just a camaraderie. When you’re on set, you’re a little tired, to be honest. You really are there to work. Certain movies I’ve done [like] comedies, everyone is a little more loose.  On these movies there are people who are really there to work and so you don’t want to diminish their experience or disrespect their process.  So for the most part on set, you’re tame, but we still have fun. Days when it’s just me and Paul, we’re giggling a lot more. Certain actors really are austere in their approach and you really want to respect that.  Off set is where the real disaster happens.”
Oh how I would love to get into some pranks and camaraderie with the cast. Do you think there could be a part for me?

How does it feel to put the Captain America uniform back on?

“I feel good now. I didn’t in the beginning.  In the beginning it was terrifying. When I began the [first Captain America] movie it was just like [I would think about] all the things that could go wrong and how this could be a mistake. Over the course of five or six movies now, it feels great.  It really does. The Russo Brothers and Marvel and everyone has made it such a wonderful environment. And they’ve proven themselves time and time again to be great filmmakers. Now, it’s like a point of pride when you see the suit, you’re excited to get the suit on and you’re very honored and humbled that you get to have some sort of a connection to it, because it is bigger than you. Captain America will live on, there will be other Captain Americas.  It will live on a lot longer than I will.  So it’s just nice to kind of have a little place in its lineage.”
I agree with you, Chris. The Russo Brothers are great filmmakers. We interviewed them, too, and I’ll be posting about that interview soon.

If you could go back in time and have dinner or a conversation with someone from history, who would it be with?

“Dinner or a conversation with someone from history?  Um, that’s tough.  I might say someone like, Gandhi, I might say someone like Lincoln. I think maybe for me someone like JFK. I really do think politics is an amazing landscape. I think it’s a really tricky thing to try and go into to be a politician, even being an actor.  Imagine being a politician, where you have to back everything you say.

You have to be able to be real, you have to be honest, you can’t be so political.  You have to just be a plain speaking human.  And I think where politics struggles is when politicians become too political.  I think JFK was one of the last guys that felt to me like he’s speaking like a human and it feels like a man talking.  And he was tackling enormous issues of the time.  The country needed so much and he kind of had to marry so many difficult challenges.  To me he is one of the most interesting characters that I can think of. I’ll say JFK.”
I agree! JFK would be a pretty interesting dinner guest!

Growing up who was your favorite superhero?

“I didn’t have one. I had an older sister.  It’s funny like that’s what I want when I have kids. I’d love for my oldest child to be a girl, because I think it softens up the boy. We had a girl, me, and my younger brother.  Whatever Carly wanted to do, we did.  So My Little Pony and Care Bear that was it. Just being in Carly’s room was a big deal. Like just being in Carly room, you’re like don’t mess it up. Just sit here whatever she gives us to play with, that’s what we’re playing with.  And she’d give us the fuzzy My Little Ponies, the plastic ones that gave me willies. You know what I mean.  It was My Little Ponies, Cabbage Patch, Care Bears.  I wasn’t cool enough to…I didn’t have a brother being like, GI Joe. I was a lot softer than that.

So comic books were not on my radar. I liked Star Wars, which was maybe the coolest thing about me, but that was my dad being like please, please like Han Solo and I was like, but Tender Heart Bear. It’s not untrue, it’s really sad.”
Awwww, Chris liked My Little Pony and Care Bears, too!

What were your thoughts when Marvel threatened to boycott Georgia if they passed the Anti-Gay bill?

“It was great. I really I thought that was great.  My younger brother is gay and he was the one sending me these text messages being like good for Disney. It was just a nice thing to read about. Disney spends huge money in Georgia and I’m proud of them.  I was so proud of Disney for standing up to that.  Making a statement and saying listen, this is what we feel, this is what we believe in. It’s a hate bill that they were trying to pass. I was proud of Disney and I was glad it happened. I was glad it worked out.  And there are still some states that are messing up.  But I was proud to be a part of the Disney family during that.”
I couldn’t agree with you more, Chris!
