There are close to 100,000 wedding photographers in the United States.

While some have the skills to deliver stunning wedding photos, others will only deliver disappointment. Luckily, by asking the right questions, you can separate the amazing photographers from the lame ones. To have the best success, there are 3 questions you should always ask a potential wedding photographer.

What are the 3 questions? Read on to find out!

1. What’s Your Availability?

The first question you’ll want to ask potential wedding photographers is whether or not they’ll be free on your wedding day. If the photographer says they have availability, double check who will be taking the photos.

Will it be the photographer you’ve already met with or will they be sending someone else from the company? If they’re sending someone else, ask to meet the on-site photographer before your wedding day.

You can also choose to only interview photographers who own their own small photography company. Usually, these photographers will always take the photos themselves. Since it’s their name associated with the company, the photographer is also likely to be willing to go above and beyond to protect their reputation.

2. What Would Working With You Be Like?

Ask the photographer what it’ll be like working with them on your wedding day. Does the photographer plan on posing and staging the majority of your photos? Or is the wedding photographer comfortable taking candid shots to capture all of the little moments?

A big part of learning how to choose a wedding photographer involves knowing what you want. Do you want a hands-on photographer that directs guests to take special shots? Or do you want a photographer that blends into the background, like a fly on the wall?

By knowing what you want it’ll be easier to find a photographer who can accommodate you fully. Finally, ask to see photos of the photographer’s past work. By looking at their previous photos you’ll be able to get an even better feel for how they operate.

3. How Many Weddings Have You Shot?

Moving on, you’ll want to find out how experienced your potential photographer is. In other industries, it’s helpful to ask how many years of experience the person has.

However, to get an accurate idea of how experienced a potential photographer is you’ll want to switch things up a bit. Instead of asking how many years they’ve been taking wedding photos, ask how many weddings they’ve photographed.

After finding out how many weddings they’ve shot, explore whether or not they’ve ever photographed a wedding like yours. Next, find out if the photographer specializes in weddings or if their specialty lies elsewhere.

We find it works best when you hire a photographer that primarily works at weddings. The more experience they have in the wedding atmosphere, the easier it’ll be for them to overcome common wedding day challenges.
