The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition

The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray on October 1st but I had the opportunity to preview a copy already to do a review.  Most people have know all about The Little Mermaid and have seen it at least once, or if you are like me, MANY times.  The Little Mermaid gave a whole generation a voice and taught them to stand up for their dreams and what they really want.  So I am not going to tell you about The Little Mermaid movie/story itself.  Instead I am going to tell you what is new for the Diamond Edition.

A friend of mine asked me what is different from this version and the original DVD she has so I thought I’d start off by telling you that this new version is the same story/movie as the original but it has now been state-of-the-art digitally restored.  This is also the first time that The Little Mermaid is on Blu-Ray disc.  When you purchase the Blu-Ray+DVD+Digital Copy Diamond edition of The Little Mermaid you can watch it on smartphones, tablets, tvs, and computers in addition to your Blu-ray/DVD players.  This is great so you can really take it wherever you go.  As a mom of 2 girls, I love that I can pull out my cellphone or tablet in a doctor’s office waiting room and they can watch one of their favorite movies.

The Diamond Edition of The Little Mermaid has over 3 hours of bonus features including the “Part of Your World” music video starring Carly Rae Jepson, Crab-E-Oke (karaoke) Sing-Along, and lots more!  What makes Diamond editions of Disney movies so special is that they take you deeper inside the world of Disney.  You get to see behind the scenes and hear stories about how the movie was made by the people who worked on it.  As a true Disney fan, I love watching all of these bonus features to learn all about the behind the scenes stories.

I’ll be honest.  I was excited to watch the behind the scenes bonus features on The Little Mermaid but I wasn’t sure if my girls were going to be as interested as I was.  I thought that they might get bored but they both LOVED watching the bonus features.  They loved watching the included clip of never-before-seen deleted character, Harold the Merman.  When you watch a movie you don’t really think about all that goes into making the movie, the characters, the story, etc.  Learning that stories change, characters get deleted, etc. was very interesting for my girls.  I think their other favorite bonus feature was watching the live action videos.  In the bonus features they got to see how actors were brought in to act out parts of the movie so the animators would know how to draw those scenes properly.  We all thought it was so cool to see the Ariel live action actress act out a scene while watching the actual animated scene that the animators created.  The actress even had to get into the water so the animators could see how her hair would flow underwater.  It is fascinating that they had many meetings just on how to make Ariel’s hair move while watching the actress inside a tank of water to see how her hair would go.  These are things that my girls never thought about before but they realized just how much goes into making the movies they love.

Another one of my favorite bonus features of the diamond edition were the Inside the Animation Studio interviews.  It was so fascinating to hear the animators, directors, producers, etc. tell how they got started with Disney and all about how they create amazing Disney movies that we all love.  I’ve been blessed to have been on 2 Disney press trips to L.A. now and I’ve had the opportunity to meet several animators, directors, producers, and other important people who take part in creating Disney movies.  Watching the Inside the Animation Studio interviews and recognizing people I have met is just an amazing experience.  Most of them watched Disney movies as children and dreamed of one day being a Disney animator.  Hearing them talk about their childhood dreams really showed my girls that anything is possible.

The Little Mermaid Collage
Of course having recently met and interviewed Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel), I also loved watching the footage of her and her family in the new Fantasyland.  We haven’t been to the new Fantasyland yet so my girls were very excited to see what it looks like.  Hearing “Ariel” describing the Little Mermaid ride was so cool.  I think I see a trip to Disney World in our near future!  I laughed when Jodi Benson was in Ariel’s Grotto with her kids taking pics with the girl playing Ariel in the Grotto and she said it was an out of body experience- “Ariel” taking a picture with Ariel.
If you are a Disney fan, you will love these and all the other bonus features on The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition.
The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray on October 1st.

The Little Mermaid CollageThe Little Mermaid Diamond Edition is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray on October 1st.  I had the privilege of meeting Jodi Benson who is the voice of Ariel (The Little Mermaid).  I’m not sure which is more beautiful, Jodi or her singing voice.  She is so down-to-earth and friendly.  We interviewed her in a small group and it felt like she was just one of us girls.  I could have talked to her all day.   In fact were were all still chatting with her as we were being ushered out the door after the interview.  She started talking about what it was like for her children growing up their mommy being Ariel and how when her son was younger he would get upset when she would sing for other people because she was HIS MOMMY.  As a mom myself I was nice to see the “mommy side” of Jodi.  Yeah, I’m calling her Jodi as if we’re BFFs.  She was so easy to talk to that it felt like we were old friends.

Jodi has been married for almost 30 years but said she would give up her voice for love like Ariel did in the movie.  She said it would be hard because singing is such a huge part of her life but for her husband she would because she believes in true love.  She said they sing together a lot and her kids sing with them, too.  There is a lot of music in their house, a lot of singing.  When her children were younger she sang some Ariel songs to them but mostly she sang songs from church.  When she sang Ariel songs to her son it was like she was working and he wanted mommy for mommy so to him she mostly sang other songs to him.  When she sang Ariel songs in public he would even cover his ears when he was younger.  Now at 14 he enjoys his mother being Ariel and all the events they get to attend because of it.  Her daughter was different.  She always loved the Ariel songs and is now at 12 years old she is a nonstop singer.  Jodi said it is neat to watch her children share the same passion for singing that she had ever since she was little.  She recommends that every child that has a passion for singing to do it in any way they can whether it is at home, church, or anywhere else so you won’t have regrets when you’re older about not pursing something that was right for you.

It was interesting to hear the stories about the first time they watched The Little Mermaid from all the bloggers in the room.  Some were only a few years old when The Little Mermaid came out and others like myself were teenagers or older.  But the one thing we all had in common is our love of that redheaded mermaid.  Jodi agreed that all ages love The Little Mermaid.  Grandparents watched it with their daughters and are now seeing it with their grandchildren.  The Little Mermaid is a movie that has defined many childhoods.  Jodi said Cinderella was the movie that defined her childhood.  She loved that Cinderella came from one area and wished for something more, a dream.

Jodi was so gracious and said that every time she sings the songs from The Little Mermaid to a new audience it is like the first time.  It is always fresh and new like the day she recorded it.  She stressed how she is really grateful for her opportunities.  In addition to being the voice of Ariel she is also the voice of Barbie in the Toy Story movies as well as about 5 other ongoing characters for Disney.  Her voice work is her regular job but she also loves to travel and make appearances.  She said it is kind of hard to grasp the impact of portraying a character that is going to live long past her.  It’s overwhelming, not in a bad way.  But when she stops to focus on it, it takes her breath away.  Even now when she walks through an airport and sees a little girl in a [Little Mermaid] t-shirt or sees an Ariel doll in someone’s hand, she gets caught up in it and thinks “Wow!  What an amazing heavenly gift that I’m able to be a part of.”  Jodi Benson was asked if there was any scene or part of the movie that she would have changed.  She said that she wouldn’t change a thing in the movie, she just had to trust in the geniuses she was working with.  I, for one, am glad that she did or the Little Mermaid wouldn’t have been the generation defining movie that it is.

The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition is beautifully remastered and includes some awesome bonus features including clips from inside the animation studio.  Make sure to grab your copy but meanwhile here’s a clip of Jodi Benson singing Part of Your World for us.

Disclosure: Disney paid for my flights, lodging, and expenses for this trip but all opinions are 100% my own.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen The Little Mermaid.  It has always been one of my favorite Disney movies.  I was in High School when it came out and there was just something about Ariel’s curiosity and determination to be who she wanted to be that resonated with me.  Now that I have two daughters, I have watched it many more times as it is one of their favorite movies, too.  Both of my girls say that Ariel is their favorite princess.  All this The Little Mermaid watching helped me win a prize in a The Little Mermaid trivia contest at the event I went to last month when I went to The Little Mermaid Dinner event.  When I found out that Disney was releasing a diamond edition of The Little Mermaid (Three-Disc Diamond Edition) (Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD + Digital Copy + Music) (1989) and that I would be meeting Writers/Directors of The Little Mermaid, John Musker and Ron Clements, plus Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel) I was beyond excited.  I was almost afraid to tell my daughters because I knew they would want to come in my suitcase with me.
John Musker and Ron Clements

It was fun to watch John Musker and Ron Clements interact with each other like a married couple, finishing each other’s sentences.  They have been working together on many projects for over 30 years after all.  It was interesting to learn that they really had no idea just how big of a hit The Little Mermaid was going to be.  Both John and Ron told stories of when they first realized what a hit The Little Mermaid had become.

Ron shares how, “When we’re working on it, the public doesn’t see it very much.  Not even our own families for the most part.  So it wasn’t until we started to have public previews and we saw the reaction we got some sense of that, in fact.  But as you’re doing it, we were the audience for the movie, really.  You’re just trying to make a movie that you think — that we would like to see and you hope somebody else will like to see it to.  So we didn’t really anticipate it.  But there was a lot of pressure that there’s almost like, “Are we gonna be able to get the film done in time?”  And it’s almost that’s so consuming just, just trying to get the film done in time that you’re so preoccupied that you, you forget about anything else besides getting the film done. So it’s kind of, “Whoa, not only did we get it done but people really like it!”

John’s personal story gave me goose bumps as he shared what happened the Halloween after The Little Mermaid came out.  “The other thing when I really felt like I realized that we had made an impact that might last, the following October, after the movie had come out [KNOCKING] knock on the door, you open it, you know, “Trick or Treat!” and there’s a little girl dressed as Ariel.  I thought, “We made it into the popular culture!  We crossed over!  This is not even one of my own children!  This is a stranger!”

Ron said, “Along those lines I remember I went back home over the holidays that year and we had relatives and they’re like, “You’ve gotta see this!  You’ve gotta see this!”  And they bring in their kids and the kids are singing the songs and they know all the words to the songs.  And it was like, “Well, that’s, kind of interesting.”  I don’t remember anything quite like that before.  So that made it seem like the film had some impact.

Oliver & Company

Not everyone thought that The Little Mermaid would be a big hit initially.  Someone told them, “We don’t expect it to do as well as OLIVER & COMPANY because, you know, it’s, it’s a girls’ movie and girls’ movies don’t do well.”  And John though, “It’s a girls’ movie?  We didn’t even realize while we were working on it.  I’m a guy.  I like this movie, you know.  So we were glad that he was wrong.”

Ron shared, “What they didn’t foresee though, was that it would have a fair amount of adult appeal along with kids appeal and even be a date movie.  I think that took everybody by surprise, that it sort of broke through.  We were really happy that it broke through and became more of a family film.  And even a film that people saw on a date and young people saw without their parents.  That was kind of a first for an animated film.”

Both Ron Clements and John Misker’s careers took similar paths.  John grew up thinking he might want to be an animator.  Then he kind of lost interest as he got older and segued more into comic books.  He wanted to work for Marvel Comics or be an editorial cartoonist on a newspaper.  He did editorial cartoons and then he came back around to animation in college.  When he originally sent over his portfolio to Disney he was rejected because he didn’t have any animal animations.  So John went to the zoo in Chicago.  It was winter time and it was freezing while he was drawing animals, so he wound up going to the Natural History Museum in Chicago and drew from the dioramas there. When he sent Disney his portfolio drawings and they rejected his portfolio, they said his drawings of animals were too stiff.  John was like, “They’re stuffed!  I drew them exactly like they were!”   But John didn’t give up.  When Disney was starting a character animation program with Disney veterans teaching it he sent his same portfolio to them and got accepted.  He studied there for two years with the “nine old men” of Disney as his teachers and  John Lassetter as a classmate.

Ron drew a lot as a child.  He was a big fan of animation and a big Disney fan.  When he was nine years old he saw PINOCCHIO came out of the theater thinking, “That’s what I wanna do.  I wanna be involved in animation in some way.”  He didn’t really know that much about it, so he went to the library to try to find out everything he could about how animated films were made and how it was done.  He checked out The Art of Animation by Bob Thomas over and over and over again.  He also learned from the veteran “nine old men” when he joined the talent development program at Disney.

The Jungle Book (1967 film)

It was interesting to learn from Ron that around the time of Walt Disney’s death, they weren’t sure if Disney was going to continue making animated movies.  A lot of the artists were in their 60s.  They were approaching retirement and there was a question of whether they might just kind of let animation kind of go away.  But JUNGLE BOOK turned out to be a huge hit.  It was like one of the biggest Disney movies in, in years.  So because of the success of THE JUNGLE BOOK they decided, “Well, maybe we should keep animation going.”

As a HUGE Disney fan, I am certainly happy that THE JUNGLE BOOK did so well and Disney continued to make animated movies.  The Diamond Edition of The Little Mermaid will be available October 1, 2013.
