How To Properly Take Care Of Your Family Pet

Your pet is a part of the family and should be treated as such. Regardless of the type of animal, whether it’s a cat, dog, bird, rabbit, turtle, hamster, fish, or something else, there is a level of responsibility that comes with owning them. Even if you do not need to walk a fish, you must clean the bowl regularly to ensure it lives a long and happy fish life. Showing your unconditional love for your pet should always come first, and this will always be reciprocated back (although with a fish it’s harder to tell). Do you have the necessary budget in order to care for them? You must also guarantee that your home is properly equipped for their needs, you engage in the necessary daily activity, provide the right diet, groom or clean them, visit the vet, as well as do additional research as is needed.

Unconditional love

Your pet will love you unconditionally, and you must return this love back in order to build a good relationship together. Of course, it will be easier to tell there is a strong bond with some animals than with others. A fish will not love you like a dog. Regardless, you must look after them and provide them with everything they need to live a happy life, details for which are expanded on in the upcoming sections.

Budgeting

Owning a pet is expensive, and so you must make sure that your budget is prepared for it. The idea of owning a furry companion is cute, but if you cannot pay for their everyday needs, you are ruining both of your lives. The cost of a dog will be much greater than that of a fish or hamster, for instance, and it is important that you only adopt the pet that best suits your current lifestyle. There is no point in working non-stop, only to be able to afford your pet’s training. You won’t even get to spend time with your companion if this is all you do!

Preparing your home

Is your home prepared for your pet? Remember, this is an additional family member that requires their own space. If you own a bird, for example, you will need a big cage that is the right size for them. Even cats and dogs need their own sleeping space that you should make room for. Throw out any choking hazards that are on the floor and easy to reach, and even put your shoes away if your puppy has a habit of chewing on them.  Your cabinets should also have a lock in case a furry pet opens one up with their nose and starts poking their head in poisonous household cleaning supplies.

Daily activity

Some animals require daily activity, and this is particularly true for dogs. You need to set time aside in your schedule to take them out for walks, and you can also take turns doing this with different family members. Once again, this is something that will improve your pet’s wellbeing and it must be given top priority. Even if you have hamster, you should purchase a wheel they can use, or buy a bigger tank for your fish so they have enough swimming space.

The right diet

The same way you look out for your health through what you eat, you must do the same for your family pet. Some have stricter dietary needs than others, but you must abide by this in order to make sure they are well and strong. The good news is that there are also plenty of online sites available where you can order what you need directly to your doorstep. If you own a rabbit or hamster, for instance, you should only purchase hay that is rich in nutrients to help them grow, such as alfalfa hay. Small animals always need fiber in their daily diet, and you must accommodate this by keeping a fresh supply of hay daily.

Grooming and cleaning

Your companion and their environment must be cleaned. If they are furry, you will need to bring them to a professional who can trim their long fur, especially in the summer. You must also buy the right soap for your animal, as they cannot use what regular people do. Then, there is the matter of cleaning their environment. Whether you have a fish, lizard, hamster, or another pet that has a tank or cage, you will have to occasionally clean it in order to maintain their good health.

Visit the vet

As a person, you visit your family doctor ever so often to ensure that your health is in top shape. You must do the same for your pet, but bring them to the vet, instead. Even animals have to get their annual vaccines and shots in order to be healthy. Choose a place that isn’t too far from where you live, but one that also has good reviews from others. You are trusting someone with your pet’s wellbeing, after all. Making an appointment ever so often is also a necessary precautionary measure, even if nothing appears to be amiss.

Continuous research

The research should never end when it comes to your additional family companion. You should monitor their wellbeing depending on the current routine you have in place and the food they eat, in order to tweak it accordingly. Of course, when in doubt, you should also always visit a professional that can give them the appropriate treatment. Lastly, do not forget the importance of playing with them and buying them toys. At the end of the day, you want to create the best possible environment for them.

Taking care of your pet should not be a chore, it should simply become a habit you don’t think twice about. After all, when you wake up in the morning, you do not dwell on the fact that you must change your clothes, brush your teeth, eat and so on. A pet cannot take care of themselves, and so you must help them out. It will teach everyone in the family to be responsible, and your pet will be loyal and always love you for simply being there for them. They are a life-long friend, and must be treated right.

6 Tips for Managing a Pet as a Busy Mom

Life with a family is one of the best experiences that you can have, but it can equally be demanding and get pretty busy! For this reason, it’s imperative that you try and stay organized as well as look for ways to stay on top of things. Every person’s home is unique, so what works to keep one person’s household sane may not necessarily work for you. Things can get a lot more difficult when you’re managing kids as well as an active and energetic pet. If this happens to be the story of your life, then you should think about ways to manage your pet in the midst of a busy schedule. On that note, you’re going to find six tips for managing a pet as a busy mom below.

Create a Schedule

One of the first things that you can do for yourself if you have a pet as a busy mom is to create a daily schedule. This is key as it helps you know what you’re doing and when you’re doing it as opposed to continuously feeling overwhelmed. Some tips for creating a schedule or routine that works for you include writing down all of the things you typically do on a daily basis which could include ones that are related to the kids, domestic chores, meals, work, and of course your pet. You can then create a schedule and break it into three sections which consist of morning, midday and evening. Once you’ve done this, proceed to add some flexibility, putting your routine together, and then testing its effectiveness. If you find that irrespective of writing things down you find it hard to stick to your schedule, perhaps make better use of your gadgets by downloading an app that helps remind you of what to do and when to do it throughout the day.

Ensure They’re Well Trained

Another thing you can do which should help you manage a pet as a busy mom is to ensure that your pet is well trained. It is especially key for people with dogs and cats as they can be trained with patience and effort. Training your pets is so important as by doing so, you are more likely to be able to mitigate the risks of accidents, destructive behavior, and mess around the house. Some basic things that you can train your pet to do include sitting, standing, using the bathroom in the right places, coming, as well as going. It should ensure that they’re easier to manage and take a great deal of stress off of your shoulders.  Some training tips if you happen to have a dog include rewarding behaviors you like, making sure behaviors you don’t like aren’t rewarded, understanding how your dog learns, as well as controlling consequences effectively. Doing these things should also ensure that your pet can be left with others and taken to public places without too much of a hassle.

Get the Right Accessories

Depending on the kind of pet that you have, accessories can also be very important. They help to ensure that your pet is well taken care of and easier to manage which can ultimately save you time and reduce your stress levels. If, for instance, you have a dog, then getting a bark collar like the one on dogable.net could go a long way to helping ensure they don’t bark too much, cause you and the neighbors sleepless nights, and put the whole house in disarray.  Some of the best accessories for pets include bathtubs, water bowls, metal crates, beds, coats, litter boxes, food bowls, monitoring devices, grooming kits, and odor eliminators to mention a few.

Stock up on Food

In addition to the tips mentioned above, another tip for managing pets as a busy mom is to stock up on food for your pet. It is likely that you see your pet as another member of your household which means they will eat just as frequently or perhaps even more than everyone else in the house does. You should, therefore, create a list of food items as well as a feeding schedule for them if possible. Once you have a type of schedule for how often they will eat and what those items are, you can go to the store and stock up on a month’s supply of food or more if you can afford it. Doing so would ultimately mean fewer trips to the store to buy your pet food which again, saves you a great deal of time. You may also find that by buying in bulk, you’re able to get tangible discounts as well. Another alternative is to make organic homemade pet food which consists of ingredients like chicken, peas, green beans, yams, and dry milk if you have dogs or cats.

Keep Them Engaged

If you want to be able to juggle motherhood, work, and your pet, then keeping them engaged is key as well. Typically, one of the easiest ways to do so is by getting them a range of different toys. You should try and ensure these toys come in different shapes, sizes, textures, colors, and scents if you truly want to keep them busy. You can also take them on walks, for exercise, and engage them in play when you have a few free moments to spare.

Allocate Tasks

If you have an extra set of hands in the house, why not allocate different tasks to ease the burden? You can get others to help with taking the pet for a walk, cleaning the litter, feeding, as well as bathing your pet. It should help ensure there’s a shared responsibility and you get a few moments a day to exhale.

The life of a busy mom often can’t be understood by anyone but that busy mom. For this reason, it’s imperative that you look for ways to make life easier for yourself by creating a schedule, making sure all hands are on deck when it comes to managing your pet, and thinking ahead. By doing so, you may find that your routine gets easier to manage and your days become a lot easier.

To help keep pets safe this season, the ASPCA has created ID Your Pet Day on July 1st – a holiday to raise awareness about the importance of ID tagging your pet. This holiday is especially timely as July 4th is a time of year when many pets go missing due to fireworks. In hopes of spreading the word about this important day, they designed this infographic with tips below to keep your pets safe:

·         A personalized ID tag is the best way to increase the likelihood your pet returning home. Make sure your pet is fitted with a collar and ID tag that includes your name and phone number.

·         Implanted microchips can serve as an important security measure to ensure that a pet is returned home in the case of a lost collar and ID tag.

·         Download the ASPCA Pet Safety App to access personalized instructions on how to search for a lost animal in a variety of circumstances: ASPCAapp.org.

If you are a pet parent like me, you may be wondering how you can help your dog live a natural life.  You are working on your own health, why not your dogs?  We have shared with you in the past about our partnership with AvoDerm products, and once again we have to appreciate how this brand helps us focus not just on feeding our dog, but truly improving his health.  Cooper is only 2 years old, but we want him to have a long and healthy life.  So these ways to help him have that life are really important to us.

avoderm bagsFeed them a natural food source.  AvoDerm Natural Revolving Menu provides you with an amazing protein and natural fat rich food source that your dogs will love.  Not only is it gentle on their tummies, there are many options to suit your individual dogs needs.  From the still playful young pup like Cooper, to the older “grandpa” dog in the bunch AvoDerm has great options of foods that are natural, quality and not full of unhealthy filler product like some brands.  This brand has been dedicated to giving you oven baked food and treats of the best ingredients since the 1960’s.

Get plenty of exercise daily.  Dogs need more than just a walk to use the bathroom. They need real exercise, just like we do.  Not only do they need it for weight maintenance, many breeds need the exercise to keep things like hip displacement, arthritis and other common breed ailments from becoming an issue.  Getting out and building strong bodies in your dogs is important for their complete health just like it is for yours.  More quality exercise on a regular basis helps them to be happier, work out excess energy (especially in younger pups) and build strong muscles to carry their bodies easily for longer.

Give them a chance to “make friends”.  Go to the dog park, bring a second dog into the home, or set up doggy play dates.  Your dog needs friends to play with just like you do.  While you have fun, play fetch and even walk your dog, they may still crave that playtime they can only get with another dog.  Providing them with a “brother” or “sister” in your home is great, but if you can’t have an additional pet take the time to get them out to a dog park or to another dog owners home for play time on a regular basis.

Bring them indoors for their safety.  While there are many pets that reside outdoors the bulk of the time, there are just as many who are mostly indoor pets.  The main thing is to make sure your pets are safe and healthy.  Dogs love being outside and in the fresh air, but when temperatures fluctuate it is time to think about their health and safety.  In the heat of summer, bring your dogs inside for cooler temperatures, or at least provide them with proper shade and plenty of water to stay hydrated.  In winter months make sure your dogs are indoors and warm during the coldest days.  A dog can easily find their paws frostbitten in extreme cold, and this is not a healthy thing for any pet.  Bringing your dogs inside to protect them is one of the best things you can do for their physical and emotional health.

Give them a place of their own in your home.  Dogs are wonderful pets, but they like to know they “own” something just like you do.  They can be very possessive, or feel very left out when they don’t have a space of their own.  Make sure your dog has a bed, crate or area that is just for them.  This can be their place of comfort to go sleep, rest, play or recuperate after a long day playing.  Make sure they feel loved, welcomed and like they can consider that their own little place in the world.  Their physical health is important, but don’t forget to help your dog live a natural life, you need to provide them with emotional security.

Finding the right food for your dog or cat can be a difficult challenge, especially when they have allergies or a sensitive tummy. When we first got our lab mix, Cooper, we went through several different brands of food to try to find the right one that he would eat but wouldn’t bother his stomach.  Each time we switched foods, even if it was just a different variety from the same brand, we would have to do it slowly and introduce only a little at a time with his previous food. This made it difficult to find the right food. I was so excited to learn about Avoderm® Revolving Menu because it helps pet parents avoid food sensitivities. With this special formula you can vary your pet’s proteins so they don’t develop allergies.  Plus because it’s specially formulated with a similar base your pet won’t have stomach/digestive upset when you switch between proteins.

Revolving Menu helps pet parents avoid food sensitivities :

  • Help minimize the risk of food sensitivities by varying proteins
  • Switch proteins with stomach/digestive upset (duck today, lamb tomorrow!)
  • Grain Free, Gluten Free
  • A limited ingredient list to help further minimize sensitivities
  • Meat Protein as the first ingredient
  • No white potatoes or fillers

AvoDerm is available in smaller sized kibble for little dogs as well!

I recently started a new, healthier lifestyle for myself and my family. We are eating more fruits and vegetables, more lean protein, and more healthy fats. This includes things like coconut oil, olive oil, and one of my favorite foods, avocados. Avocados are a nutrient rich SuperFood so I was impressed to find that AvoDerm® premium dog and cat food formulas have avocado in them.  The right nutrients in the right proportions are indispensable to keeping your dog’s or cat’s skin healthy and avocados are an amazing superfood for humans and pets alike!

  • Avocados are a nutrient booster that helps pets absorb more of the nutrients they need
  • Avocados are rich in heart healthy fats and omega 3&6 fatty acids
  • Avocados are packed with antioxidants and nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, including vitamins A, C, E & B6 for overall health

Many of the nutrients your dog or cat needs for a healthy skin and coat can be found in rich amounts in the remarkable fruit known as the avocado.

avocadoYou might be worried about avocado for pets like I initially was. I had heard that avocado was toxic for dogs but here’s some information on the safety of avocado for pets.

Dr. Art Craigmill, UC Davis, Professor and Extension Specialist in Environmental Toxicology has said that his studies and other research in the United States and Australia have shown that the problem of toxicity is in the leaves and the pit of the Guatemalan variety; the avocado meat of the fruit and oils have not been shown to be toxic. AvoDerm pet products do not utilize any Guatemalan variety avocados, nor does AvoDerm use any leaves or pits of any variety of avocados for avocado meal and oil.

Avoderm Natural is made in the USA specifically in California and created using California Avocados and high quality proteins.

How to Teach Your Child to Be a Responsible Pet Owner

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

All parents know the sound of their child begging for a pet. Whether it’s a hamster, cat or dog, your little boy or girl has tried to convince you that they’re capable and willing to do what it takes to look after one. If you’ve decided to give in and let them have a pet of their own, you should be prepared to teach them how to be responsible with their new friend.

The last thing you want is to end up doing all the legwork a few weeks down the line. You don’t want your child to be happy to play but refusing to take part in the upkeep. As well as doing things like cleaning out cages or going for walks, you need to make sure they know how to be gentle and caring too. Owning a pet is an excellent way to develop these skills in children and can help them learn empathy.

Do a Trial Run

Before jumping in and buying a pet, performing a trial run with someone else’s animal can help. You can test if your family really wants and is able to look after your animal of choice. If you have friends or family who own the animal you want to get, offer to look after it for them while they’re away. Spending a week walking, feeding and playing with a dog or even caring for a gerbil will help you to determine whether your child is ready. Explain to them that the trial is so they can prove they can be responsible and make sure you give them tasks to do.

Add Pet Care to Their Chores

If your son or daughter already has daily chores, make sure they know that routine pet care is now on the list. They need to know that the fun things about owning a pet go hand in hand with the boring necessities. You might consider withholding the fun things, like playing with their pet, until they have completed the daily tasks.

Lead by Example

Whether you find little puppies online for sale, visit your local pet shop or find an exclusive breeder, you should make sure you’re a responsible pet owner too. It’s best to buy an animal as a family pet, instead of asking your child to take on all of its care. By showing your children how you care for your new family member, you allow them to copy you. Demonstrating how to treat your pet, from touching them gently to training them, gives your children a strong example to learn from.

Adding a pet to your family isn’t something to go into lightly. You should give it a lot of forethought and make sure your child thinks about it a lot too. Before buying a pet, it’s important that your child knows that pet ownership isn’t all about having something cute and fluffy. It’s a big responsibility that in some cases can last 20 years or more.

~To make a tasty chew toy, soak a rope toy in chicken broth and then freeze. Once frozen, give the toy to your dog for hours of savory chewing.
DIY-cat
~For cats, rip off a piece of aluminum foil paper or tissue paper, put cat food or cat nip in it, and crumble it up into a ball. This serves a fun batting toy for hours of kitty entertainment. (I was given this idea by the ASPCA but it has been brought to my attention by a reader that tin foil might not be safe if your kitty is left unattended with the foil so use paper or tissue paper instead just in case.)  🙂
~For cats, fill plastic Easter eggs with wet cat food as a fun food puzzle.
