Working out at home is a cheap way of getting fit. You don’t have to pay for an expensive gym membership or outdoor activities. And you don’t have to go out into the cold and rain when the weather is frightful. But many people worry that they can’t afford to set up a gym at home. They don’t want to spend money on a treadmill, exercise bike or set of weights. However, there’s no need to be concerned about that. There are things you can use to exercise at home without spending much money, or even any money at all. Here are some of the things you can turn into exercise equipment.

Your Own Body

Outside of the gym, your own bodyweight is your greatest tool for working out. You don’t need to have any equipment, although you should get into some comfortable clothes. There are all sorts of things you can do to get some exercise at home. Firstly, you can walk around the house, and especially up and down the stairs. You can also do other exercises, such as jumping jacks, crunches, pushups, and more. All you need is your own body to work up a sweat. Try jogging in place too, or do some dancing if you want to have some fun. You don’t need to be a good dancer, as long as you’re moving!

A Yoga Mat

You might not already have a yoga mat, but they’re inexpensive to buy. Many people already have one but don’t use it as often as they should. You can use it for more than just yoga if you want to get fit. It will make doing any exercise on the floor more comfortable. If you do wish to practice some yoga, you don’t even need to buy a DVD. You’ll find plenty of free resources on the internet (for example), especially on YouTube. You can also try Pilates and other stretching exercises. A yoga mat will also make it more comfortable to do pushups, crunches and other tasks.

Chairs

Not everyone is able or willing to do a lot of exercise on their feet. If you need to stay sitting down, you can do a gentle workout from your chair. For example, you can get a chair exercise DVD by BalloFlex to give you a guide. You can do a workout that helps you to stretch and build your core strength, without being too strenuous. If you’ve got a chair you can sit up straight in, then you can do some exercise. That means it could be suitable for some wheelchair users too.

Household Items

If you’re thinking about buying some expensive weights, don’t rush out to do it. You have things in your house you can pick up and lift. For example, you have cans, bags of sugar and flour, and other things in your kitchen cupboard. Start with light items and then work up to heavier things. Housework can be a good workout too – especially doing the vacuuming.

You don’t need an expensive gym to get fit. Stay at home and work on your fitness without spending any money instead.
