Saving Money vs. Making Money

Whether you choose to save your money or invest it to make more money probably depends on what type of person you are. If you like taking risks, you’re more likely to try to make more money. But if you’re the kind of person that is happy with your lot and doesn’t like to take risks, you’ll probably make sure the money you already have is safe.

But if you’re not sure which one of these two options is right for you, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of each option below.

Saving Money

Saving money is, of course, the safe option. There are worse things you can do with your money than put it into a savings account. It’ll be perfectly secure there, and you’ll have the peace of mind that comes with knowing that the money is safe. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any downsides to saving money.

For a start, that amount of money isn’t going down, but it isn’t going up either. Nowadays, you won’t find many savings accounts that offer very favourable interest rates. So, that means you’ll leave it there for years, and it will only grow by a tiny, and pretty insignificant, amount. There’s also no fun or risk involved. Some may see this as a good thing, but investing is a lot of fun.

Making Money

To make money, you have to invest it. Of course, there are lots of different ways in which you can invest your money. You might want to invest in stocks and shares. This is incredibly risky though. It’s possible that you’ll put all your money into shares, and they all drop in price. Then most of that money will be lost unless the share price recovers.

The rewards of investing in the right place are huge though. And right now, the safest place in which to invest is property. The rental boom means that landlords can make huge sums of money now if they offer properties that are stylish, safe and secure. You could even build up a portfolio of properties. If you do this, visit http://www.infolio.com.au/manage/. They’ll look after your portfolio and make sure your properties are kept in order.

There are lots of other options for investing that can bring you just as much success though. You could invest in gold or forex. No matter what you choose to invest in though, you need to know what you’re doing and be as prepared as possible.

Conclusion

Which of the two options is best is hard to say. If you’re happy with the amount of money you currently have and you’re not interesting in risking it, you should save all the money you can. But investing can be a much greater option for a lot of people.

For example, if you only have a relatively small amount of money, and you’re not worried about the risks that come with investing, you should go for it. If you get it right, you could make a lot of money.

Back to School Shopping Made Easy... And CHEAP!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Giving Assistant, however, the opinions shared here are all genuine and shared out of my actual experience.

Saving time and staying sane seem to be my 2 main goals of back to school shopping this year. Something that didn’t happen last year. Taking 2 girls to a bunch of different stores that are flooded with other crazy parents and their kids, isn’t my idea of a good time. This year I am going to shake things up a bit. I have put together a few ways that I will be saving time and money this school year.

– Believe it or not, you might already have tons of school supplies lying around your house. Closets, desk drawers, and bins might hold hidden treasures that can save you money.

– If you have a moms’ group in your area, organize a swap party where people can exchange items for free. This can be done online or in person.

– Make social media work for you. I follow a lot of the stores I shop at on the various social media sites and often times I can score really great coupons that I didn’t see anywhere else. These coupons can usually be used online and in-store.

– Make your Smartphone work for you! Often times you can get coupons sent right to your email or via text message.

– Timing is everything! Always watch for sales and pair them with your coupons. You can still find a lot of great deals after the rush.

– Spread out your purchases. You don’t have to buy everything in one trip. Getting a few things here and there throughout the Summer will help lighten the load.

– If things are REALLY cheap splurge a little and buy extra. Kids need school supplies throughout the year and not just at the beginning of the year. Supplies tend to go back up in price once Fall is over.

– Since I am cheap and always trying to get the best bang for my buck I love using cash back sites. There are a few to choose from, but I recently discovered a site called Giving Assistant. They are a free digital loyalty program, over 1,100 largest retailers, avg. of 5% cash reward after each online purchase.

I am going to try our back to school shopping all online. Finding the best deals and bargains from the comfort of my own home (and in my pajamas if I want to).

This means I can find all of the best back to school deals on a site such as Staples and make money doing it. The sales are usually always the same as in store and I don’t have to fight the raging crowds. Easy peasy!

How Giving Assistant Works

  • Retailers pay them a commission for purchases originated from their website. Typically a percentage of the sale (avg ~5%).
  • For purchases originated by their members they pay the entire commission as cash back directly and digitally to their members.
  • For non-member purchases they retain the commission, and make a small donation to Feed America to give one meal.
  • Members are given the option to automatically donate any % of their cash back to any charity of their choice.

Giving Assistant’s even has a Cash Back Promise:

Double Cash Back, Always.
They give you 100% of the commission, unlike the other guys with just 50% of the commission.

My favorite part about Giving Assistant is the money I earn goes directly to my secure debit card. No more months
and months waiting for a check in the mail like some of the other cash back sites. Plus, the minimum payout is just $1, not $25 like the other guys. SCORE!

Check it out for yourself!

1. Sign up with Facebook or with your email

giving assistant

2. Choose how much of your cash back you want to donate to charity and then confirm it. Giving Assistant allows you to choose to donate as little or as much of your cash back to charity. Also, for each coupon used, Giving Assistant donates a meal to a needy family in America. This is possible thanks to the nonprofit, Feeding America.

3. Find the store you want to earn cash back at by either using the search bar or the list at the Cash Back Stores tab. I will be using Staples and The Children’s Place for sure!

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 12.11.48 AM

4. Once on the store’s cash back page, click the “Activate Cash Back Now” button to get started shopping.

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 12.14.19 AM

5.  Purchase and pay for your items. It’s that easy! All you have to do it wait for the money to automatically be added to your account. Happy back to school shopping to all of you and remember, if you want to save time and money be sure to check out Giving Assistant for all of your online purchases.

Understanding the modern world of scholarships as a parent of a teenager

how-to-save-money-600 Depositphotos_2016094_m (789x1024)It is a well-known fact that America is an expensive country for higher education. The last year of high school can be a period of flux for both teenager and parents. On one hand, you’re researching, identifying, and applying to multiple universities, while on the other, you’re juggling the financial impact of getting the numbers to add up.

The financial angle is even more relevant when you consider that 47 percent of undergraduates in America have an annual family income under $40,000. A combination of scholarships and financial aid, coupled with student and parent loans, are the basic funding pools.

Most US universities have a lower fee structure for in-state students and much higher tuition fees for both international and out-of-state students. Part of this is down to the funding structure of the universities and the grants they receive from both state and federal government.

You need to look thoroughly at the scholarship and financial aid offered by both the state and your chosen university. The amount of scholarships and aid offered as well as the eligibility criteria will vary across the universities, but you should explore and exhaust these avenues first before you move on to the loan options.

Plan to fill in your FAFSA form for financial aid as soon as it becomes available in early January; by the submission deadline of July 1, the bulk of aid has already been disbursed as requests for financial aid are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Start with state-level scholarships such as HOPE in Georgia and the Bright Futures Scholarship Program in Florida. Most of these scholarships are funded by the state and federal government with some private funding in the form of donations.

Most universities have their own scholarship programs that may be funded in part or whole by corporations and private individuals. Scholarships and financial aid can be both need-based and merit-based, and you need to be clear on the basis of your application.

Donations and endowments from private and corporate philanthropy form a significant part of scholarships that are offered at various universities. Lord Laidlaw is one such individual who regularly donates funds towards university scholarship programs, and he made headlines recently with a donation to his alma mater, Columbia University (see Lord Laidlaw donates $2 million). The highly successful Scottish businessman and former member of the House of Lords is currently the owner of Laidlaw Capital Management and Laidlaw Estates. In his words, “Scholarships are a direct way to give more people access to the world-class education I had at Columbia.”

The next avenue to explore is the area of student loans. These are either federal loans offered by the government or private loans from institutions such as banks and credit unions. These are loans that need to be paid back with interest, and federal loans are often a preferred choice due to a lower interest rate and greater flexibility in repayment.

The financial planning required for college education is often at par with that of buying a house, what with the meticulous planning and budget balancing required. Scholarships and financial aid are the silver linings that parents and teenagers can count on.

couwalla app
Last weekend I attended a media event with several other bloggers at the Brio Tuscan Grill in Plantation and the Westfield Broward Mall to learn about the new Couwalla coupon app.  We started our afternoon enjoying on the amazingly delicious appetizers at  Brio Tuscan Grill, a new restaurant in Plantation.  There were 3 types of bruchetta, calamari, and spinach dip.  The Beef Carpaccio was my favorite but I really liked everything I tried.  I ordered a steak for my lunch and it was cooked perfectly and the sauteed veggies and diced sweet potato were a nice accompaniment.
brio tuscan grilleAnd the desserts!  Oh the desserts!  Full disclosure, I’m dieting so I ordered a cup of fruit but my oh my the desserts looked delicious!brio tuscan grille dessertsWhile we ate we had the opportunity to talk with the creators of the Couwalla app as well as coupon guru and Miami Dolphins player, Keith Sims.  Keith gave us some couponing tips and shared with us how he saves money with coupons.  With his money savings skills, Keith is the perfect spokesperson for Couwalla.
couwalla signSo what is Couwalla?

Couwalla App is a free application available for iphones and androids.

Right now Couwalla is only available in South Florida but they are quickly expanding to other markets and will have over 45,000 coupons to save on apparel and restaurants by next month.Screenshot_2015-01-25-00-48-36

Download the Couwalla app to your smartphone.  Open up the Couwalla app on your smartphone and it will show you all the coupons available in your area.

Screenshot_2015-01-25-00-49-16You can also search for coupons by category.
Screenshot_2015-01-25-00-50-14Add the coupons you like to “My Coupons” and then simply have the cashier scan them when you get to the register.  Nothing to clip.  No searching for coupons online.  Easy peasy!  In just the last week since I stared using Couwalla I found several coupons that I hadn’t seen elsewhere.  Love that!

Couwalla prides itself on it’s integrity- find a coupon, show it, use it, done!  No need to worry about coupons not working, expired coupons, etc. like with some other coupon apps.

Screenshot_2015-01-25-00-53-53

With Couwalla the consumer is in control, not the advertiser.  Another great feature of Couwalla is the “Wallet” where you can store all of your store loyalty card numbers.  No more carrying around a keychain full of scan cards.  With Couwalla you can store them all in the app and simple show the app to the cashier to scan your loyalty card.
couwalla walletAnother one of my favorite things about Couwalla is “Couwalla Cares”, a philanthropic program in which Couwalla will donate money to charities per download of Couwalla. Couwalla chooses a different charity each month to give money to.  This month they are donating to the Alzheimer’s Family Center Inc. located in South Florida.  In February Couwalla’s Couwalla Cares charity will be St. Jude.
Couwalla EventHere we are posing with Keith Sims (far right) and several other ex-Miami Dolphins players.  We’re a cute looking bunch, aren’t we?

Text “Couwalla” to 30241 to download the app to your smartphone.

Make sure to check out Couwalla on Facebook.

Disclosure: I was invited to Brio Restaurant in Plantation and the Westfield Broward Mall for a media event.  I received a gift card to faciliate my review but all opinions are 100% my own.

My girls are hard on their glasses so I love that I can get them great pairs of glasses without breaking the bank at Coastal.com.  Coastal has a great $49 Frame Collection! Plus you can add lenses starting at $19 and you get free shipping & handling on ALL eyeglasses & sunglasses (no minimum).

At prices like this we can get a pair for each of our girls to use as a back up.  A few weeks ago our dog decided to eat my younger daughter’s glasses and we had to wait for a new pair of glasses to come in.  I wish we had ordered back up pairs back then.  I’m now going to order both of them back up pairs.  My husband falls asleep with his glasses on and I am always afraid that they’ll break so I am going to get him a pair from Coastal.com, too.
