south florida parenting june
The June Edition of the South Florida Parenting Magazine is out.  It features lots of great ideas for summer including an article by yours truly.  Check it out!
Summer Learning FunSummer is a time for fun but that’s no reason for children to stop learning.  If children are given learning activities during the summer it will make the transition back to school much easier.  Keep your children’s minds active all summer with these ideas that turn summer activities into fun learning opportunities.
summer learning1. Blow up a beach ball and draw a line around the center of it like the equator.  Now write one number 0-9 in each of the colored sections.  Toss the ball around and when your child catches it have him/her add the two numbers that his hands are on.  Older children can multiply the two numbers.

2. Have a kiddie pool?  Fill it up and give kids various size containers- 1 cup, 1 pint, 1 quart, 1 gallon, etc.  Kids can play in the water while transferring water from one container to another.  How much water is needed to fill each container?  How many quarts fill a gallon?  If you have lots of kids over, make a relay race using a measuring cup to carry water across to a larger container like a gallon.  The team that fills their gallon container first wins.

3. Going out to a restaurant?  Have your child find various letters on the menu.  Have older children search for various words on the menu or have them read the menu to you.  Getting ready to pay the check?  Have older children figure out the tip and the change.

4. Have kids practice writing letters or words on the driveway with sidewalk chalk.  Older kids can write sentences or a poem with chalk.  Raining outside?  Use dry erase markers inside on a mirror the same way.

5. Set up a lemonade stand.  Not only will your children get to practice measurements and following recipe directions but they’ll also get to practice counting money and making change.

6. Children love helping in the kitchen so dig out some cookbooks and let your children go through them and pick recipes they’d like to do with you.  Older kids can read through the cookbooks while younger children might need some help.  Once you select a recipe, your little chef can practice measuring while helping you cook the recipe.

7. Make a summer journal where children can write what they do each day.  Younger children can draw a picture and write a few words while older children can write longer stories about their daily adventures.

8. Going on vacation?  Get out a map and have your child help you plot out your route.  Staying local?  Get a local map or print one from the internet.  Have your child plot each place he/she goes all summer with a colored dot.  By the end of the summer you might be surprised how much you got around.

9. Practice calendar skills by counting down to upcoming events, a vacation, the first day of school, etc.  Practice telling time- Going to the park at 3:00?  Have your child figure out how many hours until you go?  How many minutes until you go?

10. Read, read, read!   Read with your child as much as possible.  Have your child read to you, a younger sibling, or even a pet.  Set a goal for how many books you’ll read over the summer and a special reward for completing your goal.  Check with your local library to see if they have any summer reading incentive program for children.  Some banks and other companies also have similar summer reading incentive programs.  When your children are riding in the car have them read the signs.  Younger children who can’t read can point things they see such as letters, colors, etc.

Krav Maga Israeli Martial Arts With Elite Youth Programs

Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Disclosure- My family received a small discount in our monthly class tuition to Elite Youth Programs Krav Maga to facilitate my review.  I received no other compensation and all opinions are 100% my own.  I truly believe in this program and it’s benefits and want to share it with my readers.

Pics 989
My girls and I were introduced to a self defense martial arts program several months ago called Krav Maga and we were instantly hooked.  We had attended a blogger meeting and the Krav Maga Elite Youth Program did a trial class and demonstration for us in their Tamarac, FL location.  I truly believe it was BASHERT, or meant to be for us to be at the blogger meeting to find out about the Elite Youth Program Krav Maga.  It is exactly what I have been looking for for my girls.   The Elite Youth Programs Krav Maga is all about being brave, being powerful, and being able to defend yourself against bullies and other potential attackers.  The children aren’t taught to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle or a Kung Fu Panda, they are empowered with real life skills to protect themselves and the courage to do so.  It is an amazing program that teaches self discipline, to be powerful, to be a team player, to be balanced, to be a good listener, to be ready in any situation, and many other important life skills that go beyond being able to defend yourself.

Elite Youth Program Krav Maga is for children from 3 and up.  They also offer private workshops to teach women self defense as well.  Want to try Krav Maga classes for yourself?  Sign up to receive 2 free weeks with Elite Youth Program Krav Maga plus get a BONUS FREE copy of their Family Safety Guide when you sign up.

I will be posting as my girls progress with the program so keep an eye out.  If you are in South Florida and want to arrange a private women’s self defense class with the Elite Youth Program Krav Maga, I highly recommend it.  Get some of your friends together and learn how to protect yourselves.  You’ll thank me for it!
Elite Krav - Centerline Punch

About Krav Maga:

Your children deserve nothing less than the most effective system of self-defense available today. Krav Maga was created out of a need to survive; it is practical, highly effective, easy to learn, and used by the most elite armed forces and law enforcement units in the world.

More and more parents are turning to this art to keep their kids “stranger-safe” and “bully-proof”. We have a unique program designed exclusively for children of all ages which makes learning this effective art engaging, empowering, and of course lots of fun

Why Krav Maga for Kids?

Parents, at this point you may be asking yourselves “this seems fine for soldiers or police officers, but do I want my child learning this stuff”?

That is a great question. I ask you to consider this:

  • Bullies are nearly always bigger and stronger than their victims.
  • Abductors are adults with greater strength and experience.
  • Children are smaller and have very limited, reach, and endurance.
  • To have life-saving knowledge and not pass it on is unethical.

Krav Maga is not a competitive art. Your child will not be training to strike another child for a medal. The idea is to help your child feel safer, empowered, confident, and in control and full ownership of their body. When your child feels this way, they are actually LESS likely to react violently because they know how to keep a cool head, assess a situation, and react accordingly. Violence stems from fear. We at Elite Youth Programs and Elite Krav Maga help remove that sense of constant fear and the victim mentality. We do this while still making sure kids have fun and enjoy their class.

About Elite Youth Programs

Founded in 2008, Elite Youth Programs, formerly South Florida Youth Sports, is one of the leading youth empowerment organizations in South Florida that develops unstoppable students that feel safe and secure in and out of school and prepared for anything.

Elite is the #1 safety education provider with the best programs that include assemblies, class presentations, in-house field trips, staff training, parent workshops, after school enrichments, summer, winter, spring camps and community based personal safety training.

Utilizing the most practical and effective personal safety training, Elite equips students with the skills and mindset to deal powerfully with challenges ranging from verbal attacks such as name-calling and bullying to the most dangerous physical assaults that could involve a risk to their lives.

Elite programs are one of the best solution to safer schools and safer faculty, students and families.

More than 2,500 children have participated in our summer camps or Krav Maga self-defense programs located at over 35 schools in Broward and Miami-Dade County.  the organization provides the highest-quality summer camp learning programs that help schools and students maintain exceptional academic achievement in a safe environment.

The organization is transforming traditional day camps and aftercare programs to super-effective learning and skill building courses.  Rather than simply functioning as day care stand-ins and babysitting factories, programs help children break through in areas of their lives that matter to them.  Children leave Elite programs with an edge to help them excel in school and in life.  Elite provides students with skills that will impact every area of their lives.  Our contribution to the community is to develop and grow youth programs that reliably deliver results to kids giving them a sense of freedom and choice for their lives, the power to live life fully without constraints.

Elite staff include the best educators to serve as our school partners at organization sites, young adults with aspirations to make a profound and last impact on the lives of children and teenagers with a passion for education

  1. For teachers and educators, skill sets are developed that further their leadership ability in their respective schools and lives

  2. For college students pursuing careers in education, there are mentorship opportunities from experienced master teachers to accelerate their skills and crate advanced placement at school locations.

  3. For teenagers, a world class Leadership Development Program.

front-300x420-full

The May edition of the South Florida Parenting Magazine is live.  There are lots of great articles in it including several about being a mom in honor of Mother’s Day.  One article that really caught my eye was titled “Are You at the Top of Your Priority List” by Gladys Diaz.  Gladys talks about how it is so important that as mothers we make the time for self-care every day.  “Practicing self-care is the only way that we mothers can ensure that we have the patience, energy, and ability to care for the people we love.  She compares it to running your car when the “low fuel” light comes on.  You can run the car for a while with the low fuel light on but eventually the car will run out of gas and it will lead to a whole lot of new problems.  To make sure that our “love tank” is always full, Ms. Diaz suggests several things:
1. Make a list of the things you enjoy doing
2. Plan to do 2-3 things for yourself everyday
3. Lose the guilt

You can read more about what Gladys suggests in her article in the May edition of the South Florida Parenting Magazine .

me timeIt’s not always easy to get in much needed “me time” when you are a busy mom.  One of my resolutions this year is to get myself in better shape and take better care of myself and my health.  (Don’t worry I haven’t forgotten about my children.  Another of my resolutions is to spend more quality time with them but that is a whole other post.)  Many of us are so busy taking care of our children, managing our homes, taking care of our husbands, working (inside or outside our homes), and doing so many other things for everyone else that we don’t take care of ourselves.  Often when we do, we feel guilty for leaving our children or we can’t seem to find a way to get in some “me time”.
Don’t worry, girlfriend!  You’re a great mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, or whatever other title you have and you deserve to get a little “me time” every now and then.  I’ve asked my readers, other bloggers, and my friends to tell me ways they are able to get a little “me time” and I’ve added some of my own ideas, too.  How do you get me time?  Let me know and I might just add it to my list!
Take a hot bath
Put on a DVD for your kids and read a book
Go to the salon and get a new hairdo or hair color
Put on your favorite song and sing, sing, sing.  Bonus if doing so embarrasses your children.
Explore a hobby you have been interested in.
Find a local class, online class, or just learn how online.
Trade babysitting with a friend.  One week take your kids and hers for an hour or two and the next time have her take all the kids. Sara M.- I often get my mani or pedi during my lunch break! It’s right across the street from my office, and it’s actually quite relaxing knowing that’s MY hour to take care of me!
Stefany T.- Me time for me is at night when everyone goes to bed. It isn’t always the best time but it works. I like to read a book, watch a movie on my tablet, or play around on the computer. It seems that is the only time I can truly get time alone. 🙂  Besides that, a simple shower where I don’t have people beating down the door can be a good time for me to relax. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal but with 3 kids and one bathroom, this is a major accomplishment! (http://tobethode.com)
Shower with a radio on and sing, sing, sing!
Lisa K.- When the older kids are in school and A is home fron morning kindergarten,  he rests in my room after lunch. That’s also my rest time to relax and watch tv or play on Facebook.  I don’t take calls or do any housework during that time,  and I make sure to watch nonsense shows where I don’t have to think.
Lisa K.-  I have trouble sleeping so getting up early is never an option for me. I do set my alarm for 15-20 minutes before I need to wake the kids and bring my phone into the bathroom each morning.  They’re usually up before me anyway, but if they don’t know I’m up, I can sit in peace & check my emails and Facebook before starting the craziness of each day. Schedule me time!  Add it to your calendar, set a reminder, etc.  Even if it is just a simple 10 minute break with some quiet time.
Shelly M.- I wake up about an hour before everyone else to get in a little exercise, coffee and a shower. Sometimes I can even read a bit! http://www.lynchburgtnmama.com
Amanda D.-  I set my alarm for 5:20am weekday. I go to the gym with my neighbor (our workout is only half an hour). When I get back, I shower, walk the dog, and still have about 30 minutes to myself before everyone else has to get up. Not only do I get my workout in, I’m up without the craziness, keeps me sane! http://www.brandonspuppy.com
Jenn P.- To echo what so many said, a shower and even though I don’t like it: grocery shopping. However, lately it’s been going upstairs to fold and put away laundry while the kids stay downstairs with my husband. It’s quiet time for me and the task goes so much faster! http://jennunplugged.com
Emily S.- Grocery shopping. I leave the kids at home with my husband and I go grocery shopping. It’s practically a vacation. http://www.lesswhinemorewine.com
Jim M.- A bathroom door that locks. And a book.
Jennifer E.-  Thursday night is my adult tap class night.  It’s so much fun to have picked back up something I left behind so many years ago. It’s really therapeutic, too, because you really don’t have a second during that hour to think about anything else! http://puzzlesandpopcorn1.wordpress.com/.
Marie D.-  Facials, reading in bed when the kids are asleep, naps on weekends. I learned a long time ago that it can’t just be time alone, it has to be time that gives something back.
Mica F.-  Bubble baths! Even if its not till the kiddos go to sleep at night. Shut the door, turn the lights on low or off and use candles. A half hour to an hour bubble bath soothes my nerves at end if a long day!

Disney On Ice
We went to the show on March 20th at the BB&T Center and had a great time.  It featured our favorite Disney character, Ariel, of course!  But it was also nice to see other favorites such as Belle, Rapunzel, and even Merida from Disney/Pixar’s Brave.  Having 2 daughters, we’re no strangers to Disney On Ice shows but they are always fun for the whole family.  We all enjoy watching the beauty as the characters spin and twirl as they skate.  It’s amazing to see what they can do on the ice.  My favorite of this show was Belle.  I’ve seen Ariel in a few other Disney on Ice shows but seeing Belle and the Beast was my favorite part.  Make sure to check out Disney On Ice’s Rockin’ Ever After when it comes to a town near you!
