blackish signA few weeks ago I had the unique opportunity to interview some of the actors from the ABC comedy `black-ish.  While on the ABC lot we also got to tour the set that the show is filmed on.
ANTHONY ANDERSON, TRACEE ELLIS ROSS, YARA SHAHIDI, MILES BROWN, LAURENCE FISHBURNE, MARCUS SCRIBNER, MARSAI MARTINABC’s “black-ish” stars Anthony Anderson as Andre “Dre” Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross as Rainbow Johnson, Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson, Miles Brown as Jack Johnson, special guest star, Laurence Fishburne as Pops Johnson, Marcus Scribner as Andre Johnson, Jr., and Marsai Martin as Diane Johnson. (ABC/Bob D’Amico)

johnson house black-ishOur tour started in front of the Johnson’s house where as you can see there were lights and other filming equipment along the outside of the house.  You can see it in this picture but there is a backdrop on the wall with a backdrop of “the outside” directly to the right of this picture so if an actor opens the front door it looks like they are really looking outside.  If the scene is a longer scene with the door open then they digitally add the outside for the scene so there will be movement, people passing by, etc., like you would have in a normal neighborhood.

ceiling black-ishRight away when you walk onto the set you notice it looks just like a normal home with a few major differences.  First, if you look up you’ll notice that there isn’t a normal ceiling.  This is to accommodate all the lights, cameras, and other equipment.  You’ll also notice that the hallways are wider than normal.  This is also to accommodate the equipment.
touches of home black-ishYou will also notice LOTS of familiar household items that make this house seem so real and “lived in”.  There were magazines and games in the living room, TONS of photos on the walls, and even juice boxes placed around the house just like you’d find in most houses with children.  For the frames with all of the family pictures the actors spent a day shooting these pictures together just to make them more real.  There is so much attention to detail in the house that is truly a home.
cori on black-ish set collage2Here I am posing in some of the rooms of the house.  The kitchen is totally my dream kitchen.  It’s so BIG!
master bedroom black-ishI LOVE the master bedroom.  In the picture above you can see the master bathroom (I LOVE the colors!), Rainbow’s vanity that actually had nail polish remover and other items on it, and Dre and Bo’s bed.  Yes, that’s me sitting on the bed that Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross sit on!
master closet black-ishOne of my favorite parts of the house was the master closet.  I could LIVE in this closet.  It was HUGE!  Check out all of Dre’s shoes!  The closed closet on the left of this picture is Rainbow’s closet.  I love how big and organized it was with so much space for all of her clothes.  I dream of having such an amazing closet one day!
kids' bedrooms black-ishThe kids’ rooms each matched their personalities.  The 2 pictures on the top left are Andre Jr.’s room, the top right are Zoey’s room, and the bottom 4 are from the room that twins Jack and Diane share.  I love how they have the room divided in half by wallpaper for the twins.  Such a cute idea!

So do you recognize any of the rooms from the show?  Which is your favorite?
P1230165If you haven’t watched `black-ish yet, what are you waiting for?!?!  This show is seriously hilarious!!!
`black-ish airs at 9:30 p.m. EST on ABC

Here’s a bit of info on tonight’s episode:
BLACK-ISH – “Oedipal Triangle”- Dre’s mother, Ruby (guest star Jenifer Lewis), comes for a visit, and she smothers her pork chops with gravy, Dre with love, and would like to flat out smother Bow, who feels the same way about her. Dre tries to find a way to get the two most important women in his life to get along, on “black-ish,” WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19 (9:31-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

I’ve been a fan of Dancing with the Stars for years so getting the chance to attend a live taping was a dream come true.  24 other bloggers and I got all dolled up and attended the live November 3rd taping.  (Lots of photos coming up!)  dressed up for DWTSGetting All Dolled Up For Dancing With The Stars
We arrived at the studio and the excitement started as soon as we saw the trailers and parking spots for the dancers and the stars.
parking dwtsWe had a chance to take a few photos like the group photo below before we were ushered to our assigned seats.
DWTS Group photoPhoto credit: ABC
mommy bloggerThis is what was on our seats!me on DWTSIt was surreal to look around and see the area where the band sits, the judges’ table, and the dance floor.  Our seats were on the second level right across from the judges’ table where we had a bird’s eye view of everything that was going on below us.

views from DWTSWhile we waiting for the show to start we got to watch some of the dancers warm up and shoot an upcoming promo for the 10 year anniversary.  Here’s what our view looked like and a clip of the dancers practicing for the promo.  I wish my hips worked like this!

DWTS 10 year promoIt was so exciting to be at the show live as it was airing.  The energy was palpable.  My tip for you- if you ever get the chance to attend a live DWTS taping make sure to wear comfortable shoes.  There is A LOT of standing up when the show is live and sitting down on commercial breaks.  And your hands might hurt from all the clapping.  But I wouldn’t change a second of my amazing experience.  The music, the dancing, the excitement of waiting to hear the judges’ scores.  It was all incredibly exciting!  Here are some pictures of the dances from that night.

It’s always sad to see a star eliminated from the competition.  Michael Waltrip may not have been a great dancer but he had such heart and such a good attitude every week on the show.  I knew he wouldn’t win but it was sad to see such a positive man get eliminated but the competition is just getting fiercer!

My friends and family were home watching the show and grabbed some shots where you can see me in the audience.
Look, here I am:

On our way back to our shuttle we ran into Bruno Tonioli who was even sexier in person!  Did you see him in my video above?  He certainly brings lots of personality to the show!
bruno dwtsOur exciting night didn’t end there.  We went to a local restaurant/bar, Mixology 101, and had the privilege of  a meet and greet with several of the stars and dancers from the show.  We weren’t sure who the special guests would be.  Then we looked up and in walked Lea Thompson and her partner Artem Chigvintsev.  lea and artemLea looked even more beautiful and YOUNG in person.  I swear she must have taken a trip in the DeLorean time machine because she looked AMAZING.  She was so sweet and down to Earth.  A small group of us took a picture with her and when we went to get up to let the next group have time with her, she said,”Wait, aren’t you going to sit and talk to me!”.  She sat with us like we were old friends.  She told us all about life working on her ABC Family show, Switched at Birth, being on Dancing with the Stars with all the practice that it requires, and being a mom, doing laundry, keeping her house clean, and all her other duties.  My husband’s favorite movies are the Back to the Future Trilogy so he was so jealous when he saw my picture:
Me and Lea ThompsonOur fun and excitement was just starting.  In walked Dancing with the Stars contestant and Duck Dynasty reality personality Sadie Robertson and her parents, Willie and Korie Robertson who go to all the DWTS shows to watch their daughter dance.  I just had to take a picture with another Cori (she spells it Korie) but it’s not every day that you get photobombed by Willie Robertson.  Actually he was supposed to be smiling in the picture and I didn’t know that he was puckering up until after I looked through my camera pictures.
Ducky Dynasty and MeAnd here I am with Sadie’s dance partner, Mark Ballas.
me and markOne of my favorite parts of the night was watching Mark, watching his performance with Sadie from that night on the big tv over our heads and seeing his reactions as they danced.  Dancing with the Stars is filmed live from 5-7 p.m. PST because it airs live from 8-10 p.m. EST.  It then airs at 8 p.m. PST so we were able to watch the show as it aired locally.
mark watching DWTSAnother of my favorite couples is Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy.  They are just so adorable together.
janel and valVal was almost unrecognizable with his clean shaven face.  It’s funny because I get on my husband all the time to shave but part of me wished that Val had his stubble when I met him.  Who am I kidding, he’s a hottie stubble or no stubble.  And as a Pretty Little Liar fan, I was so excited to meet Janel who looked exactly like she does on television.  She was so sweet and pretty.  I could have sat and chatted with them all night.

Janel and Val and MeDancing with the Stars airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC!  I can’t wait to watch tonight!

black-ish show GFXWhen I went to Los Angeles last week I had the opportunity to meet the children and creator of ABC’s new hit comedy black-ish.  Don’t let the name fool you.  This isn’t just a show for African Americans.  This show really resonates with and is relate-able to many families of all different races in America today.

1376505_10153101316297481_1310777886118024083_n

Andre ‘Dre’ Johnson (Anthony Anderson) has a great job, a beautiful wife, Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), four kids and a colonial home in the ‘burbs.  But has success brought too much assimilation for this black family? With a little help from his dad, Pops (Laurence Fishburne), Dre sets out to establish a sense of cultural identity for his family that honors their past while embracing the future.

black-ish stars Anthony Anderson as Dre, Tracee Ellis Ross as Rainbow, Yara Shahidi as Zoey, Marcus Scribner as Andre Jr., Miles Brown as Jack, Marsai Martin as Diane and Laurence Fishburne as Pops.
1471882_10154782960510158_4891713032874289382_nThe Kids:
I was most impressed with just how well spoken and down to Earth all 4 of the child actors were.   The were all very humble and Miles Brown and Marsai Martin who play twins, Jack and Diane, were so cute.  They’ve become so much like family that they chose to sit in the same chair with each other during our interview instead of each having their own chair.  The children all agreed that so far the pilot episode is their favorite but they also like the fantasy scene in their upcoming episode titled “The Gift of Hunger”.  As a parent myself I really like “The Gift of Hunger” episode myself.  It reminds me of an episode of The Cosby Show when Cliff was telling I think Theo that “you’re not rich, you have nothing, Mom and I are rich”.

Yara Shahidi (Zoey)-
“It is absolutely hilarious on set. Being able to work with all these comedic veterans is amazing.  I feel like I am learning so much just from being on the set.  It doesn’t even feel like work and that’s the weird part.”
“I am not very close to Zoey character-wise.  I’m the kind of person always reading.  I spent my summer in Oxford taking 2 history classes.  I have to be reminded to use social media.  We both are into fashion, but not the same fashion.  Otherwise I am pretty different from my character.”
“What’s on the show is basically our lives.”

Marcus Scribner (Andre Jr.)-
“Working on set with all the veteran actors is just an amazing experience.  It is awesome to come to work everyday and learn something new from them.  Let’s be honest, they are all comedic geniuses.  We all immediately bonded over working on the pilot.”
“I am pretty close to Andre’ Jr.  I play lacrosse.  I’ve played since I was in 2nd grade and I also play basketball.  I feel like most of the conversations that have happened to Andre’ Jr. have happened to me.
“My family is extremely supportive of the show.”

Miles Brown as Jack-
“It feels like a family!”
“I’m into sports just like my character.”
“My family is proud of us.  They get so excited when they see the billboards.”

Marsai Martin as Diane-
“Together we are unstoppable!  We feel like a real family”
“I don’t have siblings.  This is my first experience with siblings so this is new to me.  I like computers very much.  I’m pretty quirky and love social media.  I am pretty sporty.  I play gymnastics and I do cheerleading.”
“My grandpa said that “everyone in our family is watching black-ish or I’ll sock ’em!””

10172840_10153101318892481_7172376439282288863_nHow cute are they in the same chair because they are such good friends!

10665259_10153101317207481_2911528462598976664_nSo poised and well spoken.

The Creator/Executive Producer, Kenya Barris:KENYA BARRIS (CREATOR/EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)Photo credit: (ABC/Rick Rowell) KENYA BARRIS, creator/executive producer of “black-ish”

The idea for black-ish came from his own life.  His wife’s name is really Rainbow like the character on the show and she is really a doctor, too.  The show has universal themes, not just “black” issues.  It is written to be relate-able with real problems that many people have.  The ideas for episodes come from the writers’ own lives.  Kenya went on to talk about how the world is a lot more homogenized then how it was when he grew up.  He said there are no more “black” kids or “white” kids in America today, it’s all a blend.

“black-ish isn’t a “black” show just like Modern Family isn’t a “white” show.  It is a show about a family that happens to be black.”

The Actors’ Parents:1236078_10153101316562481_8271422529518899639_nIt was clear right away from talking to the parents of the child actors of black-ish just how humble and proud of their children they are.  Legally (and emotionally) each child has to have a parent or guardian on set with them at all times.  Both parents of all of the children are very involved in their careers.  All 4 sets of parents have all become one big family.  They look out for each other’s children and there are usually 4-6 parents on the set at all times.  The parents mentioned how they have a say in their child’s wardrobe, story line, etc. and the writers have an open door policy.  They receive the scripts beforehand to go over topics with their children that they might need to explain, like masturbation for one episode.  Most of the jokes go over the heads of the younger two but sometimes the parents do have to explain some of the more adult content in an age appropriate way.  I’ve never interviewed “stage parents” before so it was refreshing that these parents weren’t the stereotypical stage parents.  They are all keeping their children grounded and humble by having them keep up with chores at home, going to school when they can (they are tutored on set when they can’t attend their regular schools), and living as normal of a life as possible.  Great advice for anyone who has a child who wants to get in the business.

Bonus facts from Lindsey Shockley, black-ish writer:
–  There are 11 writers on the show
– The writers are equally African American/non-African American
– Half of the writers are men and half are women
– There are 24 episodes scheduled for this season (YES!)

We also had the opportunity to tour and take pictures on the set of black-ish so be on the lookout for an upcoming post!
Black-ish
is on ABC every Wednesday night at 9:30 pm/8:30 CT.

One of my favorite new shows this season is ABC’s Forever which stars Ioan Gruffudd as Henry, Alana De La Garza as Det. Jo Martinez, Barbara Eve Harris as Lt.  Marcia Roark, Donnie Keshawarz as Detective Hanson, Joel David Moore as Lucas Wahl, and Judd Hirsch as Abe.  It reminds me of another favorite ABC show of mine, Castle.  Like Castle, Forever is a crime show where a detective teams up with a non-detective.  In Forever, Detective Jo Martinez,(Alana De La Garza) calls upon Doctor Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd), New York City’s star medical examiner, to help her with her cases. But Dr. Morgan has a secret. He doesn’t just study the dead to solve criminal cases, he does it to solve the mystery that has eluded him for 200 years—the answer to his own inexplicable immortality.   That’s right, Dr. Henry Morgan is immortal.  But this isn’t a story about a vampire or anything like that.  Dr. Morgan dies but comes right back.

As flashbacks show, Henry has been around several centuries.  This long life has given Henry remarkable observation skills which impresses his new partner Detective Martinez, but piques her curiosity about who he is. Each week, a new case and their budding friendship will reveal layers of Henry’s long and colorful past.

Henry and Jo make a powerful crime fighting team. Henry, with his charming wit, charisma and an eerie knowledge not just of police procedure but the whole culture, finds an apt collaborator in Jo. Her personal history thrust her into law enforcement, making her an outstanding cop who can connect with the criminal mentality. They both are hiding pieces of their lives and both have lost a great love, albeit Henry’s stretches back some years. Henry met his beloved Abigail during World War II. On the other hand, Jo lost her husband a year-and-a-half ago. She finds a sympathetic ear in Henry, but his “Sherlockian” perception and his straight forward, no nonsense approach to people both fascinates and frustrates her. How does this man know so much? Will she discover who the real Henry is?

©(ABC/Bob D’Amico)©(ABC/Bob D’Amico)

Only his best friend and confidant, Abe (Judd Hirsch) knows Henry’s secret.  The two men share an unconventional bond.  Abe is a romantic at heart and more optimistic of the two.  Henry soon discovers, someone else knows his secret. He may not be the only “immortal” out there. It’s just part of the captivating mystery surrounding Henry’s strange circumstances and his long search to uncover the cause of his condition and escape.

Forever was written and executive-produced by Matt Miller (Chuck, Las Vegas). Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes, Gangster Squad) and Jennifer Gwartz (Veronica Mars, Cupid,  Party Down) are executive producers. Forever was directed by Brad Anderson and is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

FOREVER – “The Ecstasy of the Agony” – Henry and Jo discover there is a fine line between pleasure and pain when the death of a successful businessman and devoted husband points to a form of ritualized punishment. Henry learns it may be all a question of trust. The man’s “domination therapist” comes under scrutiny as a murder suspect, who also wants to help Henry work through his own issues. Flashbacks reveal Henry’s emotional story of betrayal after he shares his secret with his first wife, Nora.  Meanwhile, Abe is flabbergasted when the object of his intense passion –Maureen Delacroix — his two-time ex-wife, reappears with a tempting offer, on “Forever,” TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Get the kids in bed and settle in for this tantalizing episode of Forever.  This episode explores the fine line between pleasure and pain.  It reveals a little more of Henry’s story and his marriage to his first wife, Nora.  We also get to see the rekindling of Abe and his ex-wife.  It’s nice to see Abe with a woman since he usually keeps his distance from starting a serious relationship with women to protect Henry’s secret.  This episode doesn’t disappoint.  Let me know what you think of it.
