Getting ready to handle the utter mayhem that is Christmas with our kids is something we look forward to and somewhat dread in equal measure. Will the parents be able to handle the over exuberance and the overeating, or will we just wish the festive season to be over as soon as it began? We know your pain!

Here are four tips to help parents with kids running around cope with the festive season and survive through to the other side.

1.      Plan Activities to Do

The school holidays are long. Depending on how old and independent your children have grown up to become, they may or may not get bored easily. Even the preteens often welcome parental supervision or going out on small trips for shopping, to play in the park, skate at an ice-skating rink, or some other local activity.

With teenagers, they’re probably better left to their own devices other than when you need help with larger tasks, such as picking out and decorating a Christmas tree and helping carry the shopping. Getting them involved in some way helps keep their Christmas spirits up.

For the younger kids, make a list of some activities and games they could play. Some they can be shown how to play and then left to play alone, while others will require ongoing supervision. You can also have a look online for some Christmas craft activities that are bound to keep them busy for hours.  Just make sure you have plenty of craft materials to hand.

2.      Declutter & Clean Thoroughly

While you may think that you keep your home pretty clutter-free and clean, you might want to take a second look. With family paying a visit and other neighbours and friends no doubt coming over at some point, there will be plenty of people noticing the little details. It’s inevitable that if you don’t pay attention to it now, when you suddenly hear that they’re coming, it will see you scuttling around last-minute trying to clean up and declutter in a jiffy. We all know that doesn’t work very well!

Before Christmas is fully upon us, with Santa Claus soon to come down the chimney, inspect each room and the hallways too. Look at your home like a person seeing it for the first time. Any furniture should be moved to clean up debris, dust and everything else that’s hiding under there. Give everywhere a once-a-year deep cleaning until it shines or has some of its original lustre back.

Once the place is cleaner, look at the furniture in each room. What is needed, and what could be temporarily removed into the garage or a spare bedroom for the time being to create more floor space for guests to move around and the kids to play?

3.      Do You Need New Furniture?

When you’ve looked at what you have in your home, it’s possible that you discover a need for more chairs, a longer dining table or extra storage in the guest bedroom. All year, you have probably been too busy to notice, but now it’s obvious.

When you want to know how to get your home ready for Christmas, Fishpools have some excellent ideas. They are furniture and décor specialists that have excellent furnishing and decorating ideas to add some sparkle and newness to your home at this festive time of year. They have some lovely throw blankets to warm up your sofa and soft cushions to create a luxurious but festive look.

4.      Kitchen Preparations

Change the layout of your kitchen tops to remove many of the scattered appliances that are barely used and won’t be missed. What you want is a larger preparation area to organize little nibbles and substantial meals around the Christmas period without feeling cramped. Add more shelving if you think that will help too.

Check that you have enough plates, bowls, cutlery, drinking glasses and wine glasses. Count up how many guests are expected and see if you’ll have enough. And if the dishwasher has been playing up, make an appointment to get it fixed before it’s really needed.

When you’re organized ahead of time, Christmas tends to be a lot smoother. It’s the disorganized parent(s) that have the most difficulty. They end up rushing down to the shops on several occasions to buy whatever they have forgotten because they neglected to make a thorough shopping list before the holidays became hectic.

You will also want to pay attention to the little things, like knowing how to reset a fuse if the fuse box gets tripped, or having bills paid automatically so nothing important gets forgotten during the busy period. It all helps towards making the festive season run as smoothly as possible.

Is It Already Time To Plan Your Christmas Cards?

You’ve just packed your flip-flops away and are still hanging onto your short skirts and tees for another few weeks. You don’t want to wave goodbye to the summer. Unfortunately, it’s over now. Does it mean you should be thinking about Christmas already? Technically, now is the best time to start planning your Christmas greetings. Indeed, things will begin to move very quickly towards the end of the year. Halloween is only a few weeks away. Then you need to plan for Thanksgiving, and finally, Christmas is just around the corner. In other words, the earlier you start taking some items off your to-do list, the easier it’ll be for you in the long term. Ultimately, the last trimester of the year is packed with celebrations and stress. While it might be a little early still to buy all the presents, now is the perfect time to get ready with the preps that can be started well ahead of the celebrations. In other words: Get your Christmas greeting cards ready now!

Photo credit- When should you send your snowy wishes?

Why start so early?

If you have a large family with five or more children, it’s fair to say that it takes a lot of work to get organized. Ultimately, it can be tricky to get everybody on the same picture – for your Christmas cards – especially when your kids have an agenda packed with activities. Between kids who train regularly with sports clubs, or kids who are attending college, you might need to set a date for your family photography well in advance! Admittedly, it’s fair to say that families with young children don’t need to start very early. If you have a baby or a toddler, it’s best to take the picture as late as possible as your child will change a lot in a short time. However, you can have a go at making a list of all the people you want to send the cards to; this will ensure you can check prices.

Choose your props together

Christmas cards are the fun time of the year where you can be creative. There are plenty of exciting card themes that you can do with kids – Silent night where you silence the kids is a classic for families with young children, for instance. You can also have a playful mug shot of the family, promising Santa that you can explain the misbehavior of the year. For older kids, you might want to pick a more general Christmas feel with women’s Christmas sweaters and hats for everyone. Ultimately, you’ll need to find your props ahead of the photo shooting.

When’s the right time to send your cards?

When should you ideally send your cards? You need to consider that most Christmas cards are sent just after Thanksgiving. Some families follow the advent calendar, and consequently, your card should arrive between four and three weeks before Christmas. If you add a couple of weeks for the production and the addition of a handwritten note on each card, you should be ready to order your cards by early November at the latest!

Jingle bells, jingle bells, get all your photos! Don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s too early to plan Christmas. Starting now gives you just enough time to pick a theme and all the props you need to make your greeting cards work.

Christmas is nearly here, which means one thing – time for Christmas parties. While Christmas parties are a lot of fun, a lot of stress tends to come with them. From the panic of choosing that perfect look to the stress of picking out a nail art design, there is a lot to think about.

One thing that puts a lot of people off of Christmas parties is the time that it tends to take to get ready – there just aren’t enough hours in the day, or at least, it seems that way. There is so much pressure to look amazing, that when it comes to getting ready to go out, it can end up taking hours.

The good news is that this does not have to be the case. Believe it or not, you can still look and feel your best without spending hours pampering and preening yourself, it’s just a case of being smart about how you get ready, that’s all.

Practice makes perfect

This saying really does holding meaning when it comes to Christmas party preparation. The best way to ensure that getting party ready doesn’t take hours is to do plenty of preparation in advance – AKA practice everything that you need to. From your makeup look to your accessorizing, practice each part of your festive party look, so that on the day itself, you can get ready in a flash.

Hack your hair

Not got a flair for hair? Perhaps an up-do could be the answer? A bun, chignon or a half up, half down look could be ideal. Another option could be to invest in some tape in hair extensions – perhaps you could pick some pre-curled ones? If you find that you are seriously struggling when it comes to your hair, consider booking into the salon the get your hair styled professionally. If you do choose to go down this route, make sure to go armed with hairstyles that you would like to have, instead of having no idea.

Get your nails done professionally

If you lack the flare for nail art, consider getting your nails done professionally. There is no reason why you should have to spend hours trying to perfect your nail designs when nail art isn’t your thing. Save yourself and time and stress and get your nails done by a professional – that way you can relax, safe in the knowledge that your nails will look perfect. Pick a design that has a Christmas theme to it, but that also matches your outfit, accessorize and makeup look. You don’t want anything too over the top, just something that is pretty, stylish, and eye-catching.

It isn’t easy getting ready for Christmas parties, as there is just so much to do. However, if you take note of the tips above, you can ensure that you are Christmas party ready in a flash. There’s no need to take hours getting ready; it’s just a case of being smart about how you prepare, that’s all.

Is a Musical Instrument a Good Christmas Gift for Your Teen Son or Daughter

If you have a tech mad teen who already has most of the electronics that they want, such as a good cell phone, laptop, games consoles and tablet, it can be hard to come up with a Christmas gift idea that will appeal to their techie side while also giving them some benefits.

A good option in this case can be an electric musical instrument, like an electric guitar, keyboard or drum machine.

Why Is an Electronic Instrument an Appealing Gift for A Teen?

Most young people like music, and even if they have never expressed much interest in it before, they certainly see things like guitars as cool. Electric guitars come in a huge range of styles, and you can check out companies like BuzzHarmony.com to find something within your budget that you think your child will love.

Perhaps an instrument similar to what their favorite musician plays could be an amazing gift, or something that allows them to teach themselves to play using internet tutorials so they can gain a new hobby.

Why Learning an Instrument Is Great For Kids

Another good thing about getting a musical instrument for your kid’s Christmas present is that learning to play it can give them a lot of new skills. Learning how to read music is surprisingly good for someone’s math skills, due to how written music works, and they will also learn good coordination and rhythm skills that will be useful for other things like sports.

Music can also be a really absorbing hobby that can allow them to focus on something other than their school work while still being productive, and with electronic instruments like electric guitars and keyboards they also get to learn about the technology that makes them work and how to program them to get different sounds.

Choosing the Right Instrument for Your Child

Budget obviously plays a big part in what kind of instrument you can get, however things like electric guitars come at different price points and can also be bought second-hand, so it can be an option even if you don’t have a lot to spend. You may be worried about noise while your kid practices, however with electric instruments it is possible to practice with headphones and not make too much noise, so as long as you factor these into the package you buy for Christmas you shouldn’t have to worry about waking the neighbors!

When choosing what to buy, think about what kind of music your child likes. If they are into rock and metal, then electric guitars or drums tend to appeal more as they can learn to play the songs they love. If they are more into pop, then a keyboard could be best as it allows you to create all kinds of electronic sounds and experiment with things like sampling.

Music can be a fantastic hobby and skill that may well stay with your child a lifetime, so if they are tech mad and you are struggling for choices, an electric instrument may well be the ideal gift.

There are some gift ideas that are perfect for everyone. This means you can get it for your mother, father, siblings, and even your partner. These are the gifts that are timeless and made of high quality. They are gifts that work for everyone, because everyone has the same base wants. To ensure that you give the best gifts this Christmas, use this list:

  1. The Gift of Warmth

These gifts are perfect for the cold winter season. They are things that we can snuggle up into and use to keep the cold and wet at bay. The warmer you are throughout winter, after all, the more likely you are to beat seasonal depression. Get your loved ones a blanket, or slippers, or truly wow them with quality Irish sweaters from The Sweater Shop. Everyone wants to be warm during winter, because winter is the perfect time to snuggle up inside.

  1. The Gift of Travel

Everyone wants to travel. Where one person wants to travel, however, depends on their tastes and their comfort levels. Either way, buying your loved ones a trip somewhere can be inexpensive and perfect for anyone. You can get them a weekend getaway in a nearby town, or you could get them an inexpensive flight and room in another country. Travel is cheaper than ever before, so when you want to give this gift, you won’t be breaking the bank.

  1. The Gift of Reading

Many people love reading, others just like the look of books. Either way, you can hardly go wrong to give them a book based on something that they are interested in. Everyone should read more, after all. There is also a book for everyone. Reading before bed can improve your sleep, and reading in general comes with so many health benefits.

  1. The Gift of Home

A person’s home is where their heart is, so a gift for their home is always a great idea. This could be something to be used in the kitchen, or something to decorate their home. The best part of this gift is that it doesn’t have to be specifically catered to them, and instead just needs to look good. You don’t need to worry about whether they will use these gifts, because they are mainly decorative. All you need to do is make sure that what you buy fits the décor in their home!

  1. The Gift of Food

The Christmas season just wouldn’t be special without the good, delicious food that accompanies it. As such, you should consider giving your family great foods or drinks. This could mean getting them a great bottle of wine, or importing cheese from France. Just as with books, what you get your family depends on their personal preferences, but this is one area that is always guaranteed to be a hit on Christmas.

Christmas shopping doesn’t have to be scary. It also doesn’t have to have as much pressure as birthday gift shopping does. Instead, buy gifts that will make your loved ones feel great.

Have A Side Hustle

A side hustle is exactly how it sounds. It’s a job that you complete on the side of your main career. Believe it or not, for many people that can be blogging. They never see it as an option for a full career, but it makes them a nice extra amount of cash for expensive months through the year. Treat Saving As A Bill

We are all well versed in the saying ‘A Dog Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas.’ But sadly there are people out there who buy a puppy thinking he is cute, and then find they are not able to cope. Or enjoying a puppy when he is small and not realizing the costs of owning a pet, or not wanting an older dog. These are, of course, not true animal lovers. We would like to think if you are buying a puppy for Christmas it is because you have put considerable thought into the process. It may be that your children love animals and really want to look after a dog. Or perhaps you feel like a happy, loving pet will complete your family. Training a puppy and owning a dog is a huge responsibility. So today we’re going to look at what it takes to own a dog.

Can You Afford To Have A Dog?

Many people get overwhelmed by the cuteness of puppies. But the truth is, can you afford to own a dog? There are vaccinations, pet health insurance, medication, toys and food to all consider when buying a puppy. If you can, super! If you can’t commit to the cost for the next 12-15 years, then please don’t be silly enough to buy a puppy.

dog-734689_640Image source: Pixaby

Do You Have The Time To Take Care Of A Puppy

Puppies are super cute, but they are also incredibly mischievous! They require a lot of time and training. You are completely responsible for this new little bundle of joy, and you will have to invest hours into his training. Also, as he grows older, he won’t want to be left alone for long periods of time. Dogs are social creatures. You should never own a dog if you are out all day, every day at work. You also have to remember you will need to exercise your dog the time to take him on at least a couple of long walks a day. Think about whether you have enough free time to devote to a dog. Otherwise, it’s just not fair on them.

Are You Allergic?

Before you jump in ahead and choose the cutest puppy on the block as your pet, make sure you are not allergic to dogs! Unless you have been around a lot of pets, you may not know if you are allergic or not. Spend some time with the breed of dog you are looking to buy, and make sure you don’t start getting any symptoms. There are also tests that can be done by a medical professional to see what animals you are allergic too. If you are allergic but still desperately crave a puppy, fret not! There are some breeds, such as Poodles and Shih-Tzus that are less likely to cause allergies. But again, you must check yourself out before buying a puppy.

Decision Made?

If after all these questions, you have decided you are responsible enough and have enough time for a puppy, then there is no time like the present! Dogs bring so much joy and happiness into a home that they are worthy of becoming your new best friend!

Christmas Decoration Essentials And How To Pick Them

This post may contain affiliate links.
Thank you for visiting Cori's Cozy Corner! Please make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our E-mails!

Christmas is a special time of year that everyone loves, and why wouldn’t they? It is a time when they can celebrate with their family and spend quality time with one another. Plus, there is always plenty of beer and good food!

Making Christmas special is reliant on the atmosphere. When people get the atmosphere of their homes wrong, it never feels the same, and it can take the edge of the festive period. It is all down to the decorations. There are certain decorations that every home needs for the perfect effect, but there also a few things that the homeowner must keep in mind, too.

#1: The Tree

The Christmas tree is the most important decoration in the arsenal. Without a tree, Christmas would not be the same. The key to a great Christmas tree is two-fold. Firstly, the tree should be real. Fake trees don’t have the same smell that adds to the experience. Plus, they look tacky. Secondly, the decorations should be simple bordering on basic. The more that goes on the tree, the less glamorous it looks. The saying that less is more is very true when it comes to Christmas trees.

#2: Wreaths

Wreaths are firm favorite among homeowners. They look the part because of their evergreen leaves that hold an amazingly deep green color. And, they can go all around the house without looking like the decorator is trying too hard. All in all, they are essential. To get the right effect, the buyer needs to look for fresh Christmas wreaths. A good tip to remember is the fresher the wreath, the deeper the color.

#3: Ornaments

The snow globe or the Christmas carousel are two incredibly Christmassy ornaments that look amazing on the mantelpiece or sat in the window. It is the contrast of the darkness outside and the gleam of the lights that make them popular. It is as if they are a beacon of light in an otherwise dark house. The key to ornaments is personality. There is no secret formula to buying Christmas ornaments because it is down to the person. Ornaments vary in shape and size, so the style and tone vary from piece to piece. Whatever the buyer feels look nice is the perfect ornament for the house this Christmas. Of course, it needs have a festive element!

#4: Lights

Lights add to the contrast of the gloom outside and the light inside, a lot like ornaments. In fact, both work very well in tandem. For Christmas, fairy lights are the best choice. They are lightweight, and they don’t pulsate light that blinds the eyes. That means the designer can put them anywhere around the house, and they will look amazing. The stairs, the tree, and the fireplace are three good spots for fairly lights at Christmas.

#5: Advent Calendar

Advent calendars signal that Christmas is imminent. They act as a clock as the person counts down the days by crossing off the date and eating the treat inside. There is no better way to build anticipation than an advent calendar. Any advent calendar will do, to be honest, but a homemade one is a nice alternative.

My Preparation Tips for an Amazing Christmas

I love Christmas time; it’s maybe my favorite time of year. I love the weather, and I love the togetherness too. To make sure I always have an amazing Christmas experience I make sure to prepare myself properly. In my house, these are the tips and techniques we like to use to give ourselves a memorable Christmas.

Get a Fake Tree

One of the biggest factors debates at Christmas time is whether to get a real tree or an artificial one. Now, there are advantages and disadvantages to both, of course. But I always tend to favour an artificial one. They are much more practical and efficient. We use a fake tree, and we have had the same one for years. It saves us an additional expense each year, and it means I don’t have to worry about cleaning up pine needles all the time!

Light Up the Place

What is Christmas without a bit of decoration? You need to embrace the festive season and decorate your home as much as you can. And a great way to do this is to hang Christmas lights. Battery powered Christmas lights are excellent for the tree, or for the walls of any room. If you want to get the best possible effect, you should look at using different coloured lights. Have a think about the different places you can hang your lights, and the impact they will have.

Plan the Food

You need to focus on what you’re going to be eating at Christmas time. This is often a great opportunity for people to indulge themselves. In my house, we like to choose the joint of meat we have carefully. We’re very particular about Christmas dinner. I would suggest that you make a list of all the food you want to get over the festive period. Perhaps even plan out the meals as well. This gives you much better preparation and makes for a calm Christmas in the kitchen.

Do Secret Santa

We all know that the biggest expense at Christmas is buying presents. It takes up time and money, and it’s very stressful. It’s difficult to know when to start buying, and what gifts to get. And that’s why I came up with the Secret Santa idea in my household. This means that everybody gives and receives one present, up to a certain value of course. Secret Santa is an excellent way to reduce the cost and chaos involved in present buying. So I’d recommend you use this for Christmas this year.

Get into the Festive Spirit

I’ve found that the best way to enjoy Christmas is to get into the festive spirit. Embrace the period fully, and you’ll get more out of it. This means sending Christmas cards, listening to Christmas songs, and drinking mulled wine. If you can get into the festive spirit, you’re going to be much more organised and prepared for a fantastic Christmas.

If you want to have the best possible Christmas, I would suggest following my tips. It’s a wonderful time, and should be full of joy and happiness. With a bit of preparation, you should be able to craft the perfect Christmas experience for the whole family.

Tips For A Calm Christmas In The Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the household. This can’t be more evident than at Christmas time when this space comes alive with cooking, lively conversation and mouth-watering food. However, during the festive season, the kitchen can also be the site for much stress as it bursts with ingredients and too many cooks compete for space and equipment. This year, follow these tips, and you will have a calm Christmas in the kitchen.

Keep it clean

While preparing the Christmas meal, the kitchen can turn into a bomb site amazingly fast. So, in advance of Christmas day, set aside some time to clean the kitchen. Make sure that the surfaces are clear in order to maximise preparation space. Pay particular attention to the fridge as it is an integral part of your Christmas meal preparation. If it requires a clean, take all the items out and give the inside a good scrub. You may wish to use a product that deals with freezer odor and bacteria in order to give your Christmas ingredients the best chance of remaining fresh during the holidays. Throw out any items that are out of date in order to make room for the new produce. Do the same with your kitchen cupboards.

Create a shopping list

In advance of Christmas day decide what you and your family are going to eat and drink and make a list of the ingredients that you need. Also think about what food supplies you will need to keep you going for a few days while the shops are closed. When you have created your shopping list, highlight the items that you can buy now, and the items that can be ordered and delivered closer to Christmas day. Dry foods, canned goods, etc. can be purchased well in advance and stored in your cupboards.

Unpack logically

As your Christmas ingredients start to arrive, you should carefully consider where to store them. Vegetables will do fine in a cool, dark place rather than the fridge, which will make more room for the turkey and other items that must be kept cold. Ingredients that you intend to use a lot should be in stored in accessible location.

5292990212_0179fd7853_zImage from Flickr

Prepare some components in advance

Think about elements of the meal that can be made in advance in order to reduce the things you have to do on Christmas day. Gravy, stuffing and cranberry sauce can be made well in advance and stored in the freezer. The day before Christmas, the vegetables can be boiled and then dropped in cold water to stop the cooking process. The following day, just reheat the veggies in a pan or the microwave.

Make a Christmas Day schedule

Create a plan for the day. Include the time when you should take the turkey out the fridge, when the bird should go in the oven, when you should start preparing starters, etc. Put the schedule up in a visible location so that you can refer to it during the day.

Here’s to a calm Christmas in the kitchen!
